are at 980, is on the road to big changes, and one of the options is ripping it out altogether. good evening. i'm ama daetz. >> and i'm dan ashley. thanks for joining us. caltrans is looking at how to reimagine the freeway and reckon with its history of racial injustice. the plan is in its early stages. so early, in fact, we don't know the cost of any of the options. >> abc seven news reporter j.r stone went to a community meeting where neighbors talked about how to literally build a better bay area. >> interstate 980 goes through oakland. you see that right here. but there's a possibility that that will change in the years to come. the vision 980 study is now being done by caltrans to explore ways the interstate could be transformed. right now, there are three corridor scenarios. >> one of them is enhancing enhancing what is already there without actually removing or adding to the infrastructure. scenario two is covering the roadway, and that's like covering the area downtown where the freeway is depressed. that's

an example of that. and parks can go on top of that. for example scenario three is remove the entire freeway. >> and it's that final scenario which would likely be the most expensive. that is the most popular among oaklanders we talked with at this meeting wednesday night. >> considering the historical disinvestment and particularly ripping apart black communities historically in oakland. >> like we deserve even more funding like beyond any baseline amount, like thinking like reparations scale funding for this community. >> connectivity is one of the main concerns here. we're in west oakland. downtown oakland is over there, but it is blocked by 980. yes, there are ways to go around, but the anger is over the divide it created in the 1960s when its construction forced the closure of black businesses and displaced families. some, though wednesday, were in strong defense of keeping the interstate. >> i also am kind of fed up with the anti-car transportation

policies around here. oakland is not san francisco. it's not boston. it's not amsterdam. sorry. you can go live in those kind of places. this is a sprawling, polycentric city. we should play to that. >> caltrans is encouraging everyone to fill out surveys on their website about this. then next year, they will begin a 20 month process to analyze the costs of some of the most popular ideas, before then trying to find ways to fund changes. j.r stone, abc seven news. >> we have new details about that deadly capsizing on lake tahoe. eight people died when their boat went down in violent waves. and tonight, rescuers say the only two survivors were wearing life jackets. the washoe county sheriff's office held helped with the search for the missing victims sunday. they had a specially designed diving vehicle that helped recover the bodies. among the victims, doordash executive josh pickles

and his parents, paula bozinovic and terry pickles from redwood city. the family was celebrating paula's birthday on a luxury powerboat when that storm came in. >> all right, let's turn your attention now to the forecast. people on the coast are seeing fog tonight, but summer is in full swing. and other parts of the bay area. abc7 news meteorologist sandhya patel has a look at the warm up and the 24 hour accuweather forecast. sandy. >> yeah, dan. today, the warmest inland locations made it up into the upper 80s. tomorrow we're going to go with some 90s, but don't worry, it's not going to be hot everywhere. looking at a live view from san francisco, we do have overcast skies here in san francisco. half moon bay, visibility down to four miles. so here's a look at your planner. first thing in the morning there will be some pockets of dense fog. it's not going to be foggy everywhere. 50s and 60s, mainly sunny at noontime and temperatures on the rise for the afternoon. upper 50s to the low 90s. clear and breezy. later on in the evening you will notice those temperatures. quiet. kind of a nice variety. 88 degrees in

concord, 67 in the city, 79 in san jose and 73 degrees in oakland. so definitely we'll have our summer microclimates at full play. it's going to get even hotter in some parts of the bay area. i'll be back with a look at your weekend coming right up. >> okay, we'll check back. thank you. sandhya. protests across the country again tonight over the rise in ice detentions. it comes as law enforcement in the south bay speak out about a new tactic they're seeing. the santa clara county sheriff's office is reporting a rise in federal agents at county and state buildings. and even with sanctuary policies, they say they can't do anything about it. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez explains. >> we have not been giving ice a heads up. we don't know when they're going to show up or where they're going to show up. we just know they have been showing up more frequently. >> ice agents are coming to this lobby at the elmwood correctional facility in milpitas and arresting people. the santa clara county sheriff's office wants the public to know not only is this happening, but it's what ice is legally allowed

to do. >> i think many times people want the sheriff's office to intervene, and the reality is we can't do that by law. >> on average, about 75 people or more are released every day at elmwood, the sheriff's office said ice has detained four people there the last three weeks. last week, one man was taken into custody by ice agents in the lobby dressed in plain clothing. >> there was no skirmish, there was no uh. it was done very respectfully, but it was very shocking to the wife of that person. this is something new that we have seen where agents are showing up. >> the sheriff's office wants to be clear. they do not share criminal history with ice for civil immigration purposes. these federal agents are finding people through public data. >> if ice identifies themselves or if they don't identify themselves, if they are asking for public information, we have to provide that public information. >> when it comes to serious

concerns and fear within the undocumented community, farm workers and their families are being affected. >> you know, we're just living day to day right now and trying to provide what we can provide. >> darlene tennis, executive director of farmworker caravan, says they have stopped publicizing events for fear of being targeted. but in the face of fear, they are still trying to provide joy. wrapping up a toy drive on thursday in gilroy for migrant children. on the website, people can find an amazon wish list to donate to. >> we just want to show them some love and appreciation because there's not a single person in america, not a single person that doesn't benefit from a farm worker. >> the santa clara county sheriff's office says so far, each apprehension they've had between ice agents, deputies and those in custody has been peaceful. in the south bay, lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> tense talks in oakland tonight as school leaders debate oakland, unified's budget. the district needed to cut nearly

$100 million for next year's budget. even more cuts are expected in the years to come. and like many other bay area school districts, oakland faces declining enrollment and increasing operational costs. the oakland unified board got an earful tonight. >> it doesn't appear that the best, the best interests of our students are being prioritized. our children can't read and the students deserve better. so we definitely demand transparency. and if you can't deliver that, we demand your resignation because you're not fulfilling the contract in which we put you in. >> back in february, the board voted to issue layoffs and eliminate about 100 full time positions. the board must submit the budget to the alameda county office of education by monday. >> ucsf health is set to lay off 200 people across its network. the hospital system says the cuts are part of a bigger effort to deal with serious financial challenges. it's citing the rising cost of doing business with shrinking reimbursements for medical services. ucsf says the cuts represent about 1% of its overall workforce. impacted

employees will receive benefits like severance pay and support in their career transition, ucsf health says, quote, we recognize they are more than just positions. they are people who have given their time, skill and heart to ucsf health. we are deeply grateful for their contributions. >> president trump says the united states will meet with iran next week as the cease fire with israel holds. the president is insisting u.s. strikes meantime obliterated iran's nuclear program, despite intelligence officials saying otherwise. abc news reporter zohreen shah looks ahead to the diplomatic talks tonight. >> president trump returning to washington hours earlier during a high profile appearance with america's nato allies in the netherlands. the president claimed recent u.s. strikes severely damaged iran's nuclear program. the president also dismissed a preliminary assessment from the pentagon, which sources say suggests the impact may have only delayed iran's efforts by a few months. >> it was very, very successful.

it was called obliteration. >> sources tell abc early intelligence from the pentagon indicates at least two of the nuclear sites targeted were not completely destroyed. additionally, iran had reportedly moved a significant portion of its near weapons grade uranium stockpile before the strikes. despite these reports, the president pushing back. >> we think we hit them so hard and so fast they didn't get to move. >> the defense intelligence agency, which produced the initial report, found at least some enriched uranium had been moved from the nuclear sites ahead of the blasts. at the same time, president trump referenced israeli intelligence claiming that bunker buster bombs used by the u.s. had rendered iran's key enrichment site at fordo non-operational, destroying vital infrastructure. the president, meanwhile, stating that diplomatic talks with iran are set to resume next week. >> we're going to talk to them next week with iran. >> the president's middle east special envoy, expressing

optimism with reaching an agreement. telling cnbc. >> we're hopeful for a comprehensive peace agreement. we were uh. we were hopeful when we first started negotiations. it didn't quite work out that way. >> zohreen shah, abc news, los angeles. >> and we have several building a better bay area breakthroughs to share tonight. first, a bay area business is once again the most valuable company in the world. shares in santa clara based nvidia rose more than 4% today, setting a new record high of $154 a share. the chip maker previously set a record in january and more than $149. some analysts say nvidia's market cap could grow from its current $3.6 to $6 trillion. >> in another breakthrough, san francisco is a finalist of the bloomberg philanthropies 2025 mayor's challenge. the competition aims to inspire solutions for local governments. san francisco is one of 50 finalists from across the world,

significant implications for survivors of the wildfires who've struggled with insurance claims, even if their homes survived. the california fair plan said it would likely not appeal the court's decision, and that the claims are now being handled in a way that's consistent with state law. >> well, no more ifs, ands or buts. in santa cruz, the city council decided to ban the sale of filtered cigarettes. they voted unanimously in support of this ban. it comes just a few months after santa cruz county passed a similar policy. environmental groups like save our shores have been fighting for this to put a stop to litter on the beaches. but convenience store owners were calling instead to quote, save our stores. >> we've been collecting data on our cleanups, on our beaches and the monterey bay region for decades. and cigarette butts have time and time and again come up as the number one item we continue to find and pick up on our beaches. >> if they would have brought us to the table, we could have brought them a lot more data

where they could have made an educated decision. and i think they were very flippant about what they decided to do. >> there is still some time before this takes effect. it does not go into effect until january of 2027. >> wildlife officials in south lake tahoe euthanized a bear with a long history of home invasions and car break-ins last weekend. they say the bear went into a trailer and swiped at a camper inside, sending the woman to the hospital. she also ripped the door open on a camper van with teens sleeping inside. the executive director of the bear league says the problem began because campers weren't securing their food properly. >> and many of them were throwing food to the cubs in order to get photos. uh. so she was trained to come in there by being rewarded with food, which is what a bear thinks about all the time. >> wildlife officials say they euthanized her monday after multiple attempts to get her away from people failed. her two

five month old cubs were captured and taken to a wildlife rehab facility in northern california. they hope to eventually return the cubs to the wild. >> well, look at this image. in san francisco, a car crashes through a fence and into someone's backyard, landing on top of a propane tank. firefighters, police and towing services worked together to carefully remove the suv. sonic and frederick firefighters think the driver may have had a medical emergency of some kind. they went to the hospital with minor injuries. glad to say no one else was hurt. >> big changes could be on the way for southwest airlines. at an airport industry conference, the ceo said the company is open to anything to try to win over people flying on other airlines. that includes potentially setting up airport lounges, offering premium seating and long haul flights to europe. southwest has been in the midst of a transformation recently. last month, the airline ended free checked baggage, which was the airline's most recognizable perk. southwest is also eliminating its open seating

policy. >> it would all just add a little more room. >> people would love that. yeah. >> we definitely need that. >> yes, sandy is here. >> yeah. and you know what? dan and ama, we are going to talk about the weather changing today. temperatures came up. we're going to continue with that trend. i want to show you a live picture from santa cruz beach boardwalk. hey, tomorrow will be a good day to head to the coast to escape the warmth. if you don't like the heat, because we're going to go from the 80s of inland areas today to the 90s tomorrow, so it is going to be nice enough to hit the beach. but keep in mind, it is not going to be completely clear. we'll have a mix of sun and clouds. a milder afternoon uv index will be very high 75 in santa cruz, 62 at ocean beach, 70 at stinson beach. look at the water temperature 53 degrees. you know, when the wind is coming off that water. it feels a lot chillier in the pacific. high pressure is in control of our weather, and that's going to keep that gradual warming trend

going tomorrow as well. we do have some fog right near the coast and even right near the bay shoreline. it is going to be limited tonight as the marine layer is compressing. it's now around 1400 feet visibility right now. half moon bay, four miles down around the monterey bay, five miles in monterey. i suspect as we head towards tomorrow morning, you're going to see even lower visibility. so plan accordingly for the morning commute, your temperatures in the 50s and the 60s, checking out temperatures around the country. it was another dangerously hot, record setting day back east. high temperatures of 96 at new york, d.c. 93 boston. the good news is these temperatures are going to be coming down. at least they'll get a break tomorrow from our bay bridge toll plaza. you can see the gray skies overnight, areas of dense fog. the next few days, warming continues. it's going to get hot inland. and for pride weekend, it is going to be perfect for the parade on sunday right here in san francisco. so let's check out the pride weekend forecast. upper 60s
