husband and husband. >> love is love. a series of weddings at city hall to help kick off pride weekend in san francisco. >> i feel excited about it. i feel there's a lot of work for us to do. >> those celebrations temper. >> just a bit today, by a supreme court ruling and the removal of a name of a famous san franciscan from a naval ship. >> and in the east bay. yet another new name for oakland's airport. you're going to love it. good afternoon. thanks for joining us. i'm larry beil. >> it's gauaranteed i'm julian glover. a pride weekend is here, and the final preparations are now underway for one of the biggest pride celebrations in the nation, with events happening all over the city. >> let's take a live look at market street in san francisco, where the pride parade will take place sunday morning. the route runs from beale to eighth street and ends with a celebration outside city hall. now a live look at one of the events that is just getting underway. look at all those people. it's the annual trans march, which happens the friday before the pride parade. every year, participants are gathering at

dolores park, and then at six, they'll walk to turk and taylor streets. a rally will go on there until 8:00. organizers say the goal is to envision a world where transgender people are safe, loved and empowered. >> and of course, the crowd there no doubt just growing. let's get right to abc seven news reporter tim johns live now from pride kickoff celebration on front street. that is going to begin shortly. >> yeah. larry julian, this event is set to start at 430 and final preparations are underway. the excitement is starting to build now. this is one of the city's block parties and it's called drag me out to front street. it's set to feature some of the city's biggest drag performers, a live dj, as well as some food and drinks. and guys, this is just one of many events happening around the city this weekend. >> by virtue of the authority vested in me by the state of california, i now pronounce you husband and husband. congratulations! >> with a kiss and an i do lgbtq couples lined up to get married

at san francisco city hall friday. neil sharp and his now husband, steve hardy, were one of two couples to be married by mayor daniel lurie. the couple has been together eight years and chose this pride weekend specifically to be their wedding date. >> we met online at a time when i think both of us had actually given up on the idea that we would actually meet our life's partner, and from the very first meeting, it became very clear that our lives were meant to be entwined. >> with this ring, i thee wed. >> mayor lurie says the city has been preparing for pride festivities for months and is ready to welcome thousands of people. he tells us he wants san francisco to remain a beacon for the lgbtq community. >> it's true. every single day. it was true when harvey milk stood up and gave people hope. it's true today, and it's going to be true years from now. >> on the streets of the city, the anticipation for one of the biggest weekends in san francisco could be felt everywhere. but perhaps nowhere was that more true than in the

indian day in san francisco. they held a celebration over at the veterans war memorial building, san francisco's gay american indians is the oldest native queer club in the united states and is celebrating its 50th anniversary. >> all right, so the parade is coming up on sunday. everybody wondering what is the weather going to be like? >> let's check in now with abc7 news meteorologist sandhya patel, who is here with your accuweather forecast. sandhya. >> yeah, julian and larry, you know what? you can't ask for better weather, for pride weekend and for the parade. let me show you a live picture right now. this is the view from fisherman's wharf. on top of the skystar wheel is where that camera is located. it's going to be all lit up in the pride flag colors tonight and tomorrow night you get a view like no other. a lot of sun out there bright and sunny this saturday. 68 degrees here in the city. still mild on sunday for the parade, but it is definitely going to be a little bit cooler and breezy. temperature of 66 degrees. i'll be back with a closer look at the forecast for your weekend. to let you know how long this weather is going

to last. julian. >> perfect forecast indeed. thank you so much, sandhya. abc seven once again the exclusive broadcast partner of the san francisco pride parade. you can watch it live sunday morning starting at 1030 right here on abc seven and wherever you stream abc seven news. >> celebration in the castro district this morning to honor the legacy of late civil rights leader harvey milk. san francisco mayor daniel lowry was flanked by local leaders and dignitaries announcing the redevelopment of the harvey milk memorial plaza at market and castro. it is moving forward. the mayor says the new plaza will ensure the next generation knows exactly who harvey milk was, what he stood for, and why he still matters today. the project's design is set to be completed this year, with construction starting next year scheduled to be done by 2028. harvey milk's name no longer graces a ship in the u.s. navy today. defense secretary pete hegseth announced. the ship is now named the usns oscar peterson. naval congressional medal of honor recipient. hegseth says he ordered the

renaming to take politics out of naming ships. this ship, known as a replenishment oiler, was honored or named in honor of milk, a navy veteran back in 2016. milk's nephew described this move as a call to action. >> okay, let's get out to the east bay now, where we're following a story that we thought was over. remember the drama over the name of oakland's airport? >> who could forget? it continues. so they went from oakland international airport to san francisco bay. oakland, now international airport. then there was a lawsuit over the name, and now it's changing yet again. >> abc seven news reporter luz pena is live at the new oakland san francisco bay international airport. did you catch the difference? >> memorize this. lose. >> julian and larry say it one more time. the oakland san francisco bay international airport. >> i'm not even trying. >> hey, well, you know what? this name change came just a

year after the first rebranding, which obviously led to a lawsuit by the city of san francisco and many confused travelers who landed here in oakland thinking they were actually landing at sfo. the airport in oakland is changing its name for the second time in a year. >> again to what? >> like kathy heinz, many travelers are wondering the same thing. we took these questions to the director of aviation for the port of oakland. >> we're going to go with oakland san francisco bay airport. this is really kind of leaning into oakland, putting oakland first. >> here's some context. a year ago, the port of oakland, which operates the airport, changed the airport's name to the san francisco bay oakland airport, hoping new branding would attract more traffic. san francisco ended up suing oakland. so now the port is proposing to switch the name around and put oakland first. how much money has the port of oakland spent with these name changes? >> so in our board letter, we

put down roughly $150,000. really what that does is that's that's for signage or digital signage. and some of the marketing things we've done as far as if you're asking for legal fees. i do not know at this time. >> has it been worth it? >> absolutely. it's been worth it. we've gotten a lot of coverage. >> bay area resident janet coble is glad the new name will make it clear that the airport is actually located in the city of oakland. >> people my age at least, aren't going to get confused. young people don't seem to get as confused as easily as we do. >> city council member noel gayo is hoping this change will lead to more flights. >> we're losing some flights from southwest, so we need to do everything possible to how do we make the opportunity for southwest a lot better so they can stay in oakland? >> as to the lawsuit, it's still ongoing. in a statement, the san francisco city attorney's office responded, we are just learning about this development and will assess any next steps to ensure san francisco international airport's trademark is protected.

oakland councilmember carroll fife hopes this change sends a clear message. >> we're hoping that this is what it takes to take us out of litigation and still put oakland on the map. >> and this is not a done deal. the port of oakland still needs to vote on this on july 10th. and if you're wondering about the three letter identifier, that remains the same in oakland. luz pena, abc seven news. >> oakland, san francisco bay international airport. we appreciate it. thank you. luz. now to the south bay, where san jose police say more than 3,000 pounds of illegal fireworks will not make their way onto local streets this 4th of july. officers seized the fireworks during two separate undercover operations, the first on june 16th at a south san jose storage locker, the second last sunday at two locations in east san jose, where officers also discovered 50 improvised explosive devices, or ieds. >> an ied is a homemade device, and in this case they contained

hundreds, if not thousands of times more. the legal limit of explosive powder. >> three suspects are now in custody. one is charged with the possession, sale and transportation of destructive devices and illegal fireworks. two others facing multiple felony counts related to the possession of illegal fireworks. in san francisco. hundreds of illegal fireworks seized there, too. police say the fireworks were recovered from a stolen van driving through the city, a reminder that all fireworks are illegal in the city of san francisco. >> the 40 niners are not saying much about last night's arrest of defensive back lenore in los angeles, according to police. officers approached a group of people, including lenore. they saw a gun inside a car, and then when the officers asked for the keys, the man who had the keys threw them to lenore, who then tossed them to a third man who allegedly tried to hide them a game of hot potato with the police. there, lenore is accused of obstruction of justice. released from jail today, scheduled to appear in court

has upped the ante by adding incentives to convert those properties. abc7 building a better bay area reporter, lyanne melendez, takes a look to see whether they can build motivation here, because it's not as easy as just okay, one to the other. >> no, and it's going to take a long time. you know, i'm not a developer because i like to sleep at night and not worry. but it seems like a good deal. okay, so let's say i own an office building. in order to convert it, i'm going to need a lot of money. what the city would do is once the building is converted, i get a rebate money back every year for 30 years. sounds promising, but right now, developers say there's a lot of certainty. building conversions are a challenge, but not always impossible. san francisco has a history of converting office spaces into residences. 46 condos were developed at the royal insurance building at sampson and pine streets. the old chronicle building is now a

ritz-carlton residence. on market street, 52 units there were converted the bank of italy building, later named bank of america at one powell street, was transformed into 44 lofts, and the largest conversion happened at 100 van ness. the old triple a building now home to 418 rental units. the architect explained how they did it. >> and the biggest thing that we did at the building was to remove the old precast concrete facade and to replace that with floor to ceiling glass, to really allow the view potential of the building to be realized. >> that project started in 2013. today, a hard reality is hitting developers like mark babson of the emerald fund. >> the exact same building that we're in today, if we bought it out today, would cost 70% more,

70% more than 2013. in these 12 years. >> construction costs have increased at a faster rate than rents in san francisco. so for many developers, the numbers simply do not add up. last october, then mayor london breed announced the office of housing conversion at 785 market street. the old humboldt bank building. but the developer appears to have now hit the pause button. supervisor rafael mandelman is staying realistic in these uncertain times. >> you know, where are we going? are we headed into recovery? are we headed into recession? that will make a difference. what happens with interest rates? you know what happens with tariffs? >> here's what the city has done to incentivize developers. a year ago, we told you the city's permitting process had been expedited and planning fees reduced. but there's more to it. developers who convert then later sell the building no longer have to pay the 6% transfer fee. check. conversions

are exempt from affordable housing requirements. check. that was all done to try to add housing and revitalize downtown. >> we will continue to adapt. we will adjust, and we will be better. >> and now mayor daniel lurie has signed a legislation aimed at continuing the work of his predecessor. it would reimburse the yearly tax increases that an owner would have to pay. >> that increased tax would actually come back to the owner of the building as an incentive for them to take on the project in the first place. >> let's say you converted the building and now the added value is $209 million. the building would be eligible for a city rebate. in this case, that's nearly $1.4 million in the first year alone. that would increase each year as taxes went up over 30 years. that really adds up. >> so it's a real value to the property, a really a huge

reduction of the expenses of operating the building. >> members of the board of supervisors are optimistic that it will increase conversion developments. the vote to pass the legislation was unanimous. >> i think there's about 50 that are actually going to be utilizing this program. those 50 buildings turn into about 4400 units of housing. that turns into over 10,000 new residents in this downtown area. >> but right now, those 50 or so that may be viable candidates for conversion are laying low and not revealing their intentions yet. and supervising all of this and selecting the buildings will be up to the downtown revitalization and economic recovery financing district. yes, it's a long title. the people involved in that should be in place by the end of the year, and then in january 2026, building owners can begin applying. and we will keep tabs on these conversions. so let's do the math. okay. so

that required age verification for adult websites, and also upheld the affordable care act's preventive care mandate. now, one of the most anticipated decisions today was about birthright citizenship, and the court ruled individual judges actually lack the authority to grant nationwide injunctions, but did not rule directly on birthright citizenship. so it's more of a technical ruling. abc seven political reporter monica madden with a closer look. >> well, this was a big one, wasn't it? >> president donald trump taking a victory lap friday after the u.s. supreme court ruled federal judges cannot block a president's policy nationwide. >> in striking down theonwide. excessive use of nationwide injunctions to interfere with the normal functioning of the executive branch. >> the white house, making the case that birthright citizenship incentivizes illegal immigration. >> birthright citizenship which now comes to the fore. that was meant for the babies of slaves. it wasn't meant for people trying to scam the system and come into the country. >> for more than 150 years, the

14th amendment has guaranteed all persons born in america are u.s. citizens. that right, upheld in the 1898 landmark case of wong kim ark, a san francisco born child of chinese immigrants. >> to me, it was all settled law. it was history. >> one of his descendants, norman wong, says he never thought birthright would be up for debate and says the move feels like a dangerous backslide. >> that's going to create havoc in this country, and this is going to change what america means to the world. >> san francisco is part of the lawsuit. city attorney david chu says he's disappointed in the ruling. >> national injunctions are not an everyday tool, but they have been an important tool to prevent unnecessary patchworks of rulings and to check illegal federal action. >> but california and other states suing say the fight is far from over. >> it's now up to the lower courts to reconsider if the nationwide injunction is appropriate and necessary to provide complete relief to the states whose ags sued to

challenge this order. we believe that we will prevail, our cases continuing to make its way through the legal system, and will continue to show up every step of the way to fight for the rights of all americans born in this country. >> already, two groups filing class action lawsuits friday to block trump's order, which the supreme court indicated could be a pathway for blocking policy nationwide. in san francisco. monica madden, abc seven news. >> governor gavin newsom is suing fox news for defamatin after a network host claim he lied. it's related to president trump's assertion that he talked to newsom the day the president deployed 700 marines to los angeles. newsom says that did not happen. the $787 million lawsuit claims jesse watters, fox news program, misleadingly edited a video clip of trump to support the president's claim. >> abc seven news insider phil matier is with us to discuss this. it's unusual for, you know, for governor newsom to be filing this type of lawsuit.

however, we're seeing more and more politicians filing claims against news organizations. >> yes, we are. and let's get clear. this is not governor newsom doing this. this is candidate newsom. he's not doing this as official capacity as governor of california. he's doing this as the potential presidential run. he's had a long and twisted career with in relationship with fox news. he's sometimes been on there as a guest. he's sometimes had debates on there with ron desantis. so he's sort of been a he's very friendly with fox news. on one hand, that's gotten some blowback from other people saying, what are you doing on fox news? well, he stiffened up. and what he's basically said was that fox news, in this instance, misreported or reported what donald trump misreported was a conversation they supposedly had prior to the president ordering the national guard onto the streets of los angeles, and that they and so he has contracted with the same fim that sued talk show hosts over the sandy hook shooting and libel. and so he's brought in big guns and aimed him at fox

news. >> and obviously they were successful in that lawsuit there with the sandy hook one. state senator scott wiener today filing paperwork to run for nancy pelosi's seat in congress. what does this mean? because we have not heard from pelosi saying that she doesn't plan on running again. >> and i don't think you will for a while. what this means is that scott wiener is waiting in the wings, he's waiting in the wings, and he's collected about $1 million. this is about the third time that he's come up with this. he signs up to run, and he collects the money, and he waits. because if nancy pelosi either decides not to run or pulls out after she's electe, and possibly in what many people think is a move to put her daughter, possibly as her replacement, have her daughter elected as her replacement. scott wiener is saying, i'll have $1 million and be ready to go. so it's priming up for one of the big congressional fights. and it was interesting, you know, back to the governor's lawsuit against fox news. people are asking what was the $787 million figure? how did he come across with that? that is what

cisco, you get a speeding ticket in the mail. now, you can fight that ticket virtually as well. the my citations website lets drivers who got a ticket for a moving violation contested online. the website requires the driver to submit evidence and written statement on what happened. san francisco, the only bay area county that allows this, but more will be added this year. so i wonder if at some point you can like do a zoom call with the judge and say, i did not go through that red light, your honor. >> just don't do it from your car, right? yeah. >> no, no zooming while driving. definitely not a good look. >> it sounds like larry has some experience doing this. >> well, i have a little bit.
