((paula francis)) and i'm paula francis. the call came in mid-afternoon near desert inn and cimarron. that's where we find 8 news now reporter sharie johnson with the latest. sharie? ((sharie johnson)) police have blocked off maple valley street... which is about a block away from where this happened. ((sharie johnson)) metro police are at the scene of a deadly shooting involving a police officer near desert inn and cimarron roads. the shooting occurred on gilded crown court around 2 p.m. according to metro, the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. police went to the address at the request of u.s. marshals for assistance with a wanted suspect, metro police said. there are no reported injuries to officers. close down. then metro police will start to clear cars off the strip. moving walkways, elevators and escalators leading to or crosisng onto the strip will be shut down at 6- 30 tonight. once that is all done...authoriti es will start letting people onto las vegas boulevard where more than 330- thousand people are expected to celebrate the new year. ((mauricio marin)) in the downtown area... fremont street experience is shut down until 6pm as they get ready for festivities there. gates will open in about an hour for entertainment. there's going to be plenty....securit y around. metro police say over 1400 hundred officers and off duty cops will be downtown and on the strip. in addition to patrolling around the valley. metro police say they haven'te recieved any information of credible threats to new year's eve festivities in las vegas.

dubai...right at the turn of midnight. the massive fireworks display for the new year continued anyway. the 63-story hotel-and- condominium is located near the world's tallest skyscraper, - the burj khalifa, - where tens of thousands gathered to ring in the new year. government officials say one person died from a heart attack.. when a stampede broke out as the building was evacuated. 14 hotel residents were treated at the scene for minor injuries. officials say the hotel's sprinklers and internal fire- fighting systems helped to prevent the spread of the flames. ((dave courvoisier)) > for the second time this week, a fire is believed to have been started by squatters. ((paula francis)) early this morning, an apartment building near vegas valley drive and maryland parkway went up in flames. dozens of residents were displaced, including children. 8 news now reporter karen castro has more on the damage. ((karen castro - reporting: the entire apartment building had to be evacuated. firefighters say there is significant damage to a number of units and some may be a total loss.)) the fire started shortly after two this morning while most residents were sound asleep. many of them woke up to heavy smoke. the clark county fire department says everyone was able to make it out safe. when firefighters arrived on scene, several apartments were engulfed in flames. called in to help. one resident describes the chaos... moments after she realized there was a fire at her apartment building. ((robin luff - displaced by fire: i'm trying to get my grand-- my grandson awake. i'm not even thinking about shoes, nothing. i'm going into this shock mode at this point and the dogs

because of all the commotion out on the porch trying to help us get us out of the house.)) the clark county fire department is not saying what caused the fire. but residents believe squatters are to blame. we're told at least three apartments are vacant... but occupied by homeless people trying to stay out of the cold. in all: 19 adults, 17 children, and two handicapped residents were displaced. the red cross has stepped in to help. families affected have received debit cards to use for food and shelter. the wind advisory for the lake and down the colorado river valley. gust there could be between 30 to 40 mph with higher winds at in laughlin. that's alert is in effect until 4 a.m. and should be allowed to expire. ............................... .............. satellite and radar show not much going on in the west coast. even the pacific northwest finally getting a break from rain this new years eve. a high building there and a closed low in the northwest of the state over us will stall then move out this weekend. we'll begin to see near normal temps by sunday and early next week. ............................... ............... so the big story are those winds. here's what we think will happen. winds with north breezes early in the evening will give way to lighter winds through the night.

doctor's office near charleston and rancho on the 16th. you may remember that his female accomplice was shot by an employee and later died from her injuries. police say chism and his partner broke into the office and forced a doctor, an employee and a patient into one of the rooms. authorities believe chism pistol- whipped the doctor. authorities believe the two were looking for prescription drugs./// ((paula francis)) > metro police have released the surveillance video from a deadly shooting outside a gym this week. take a look. authorities say they want to talk to the person or persons who were inside this car. it pulled up right next to the car where the victim, 42 year old neil gandler was found dead from a gunshot wound. the suspects in this case are still on the run. the car is described as a mid 2000s two dour coupe with a spoiler and non tinted windows. if you know anything about this murder... you're asked to call crimestoppers. /// ((paula francis)) > major shakeups on the campaign trail.
