near buffalo and flamingo. reporting from spring valley. michael stevens, 8 news now. ((brian loftus)) metro police are asking anyone who may of area... to call crimestoppers. ((brian loftus)) > we know a little more about what happened to cause a deadly crash during the evening commute last night... michael lemcool died... after his car crashed into a pole near buffalo and cheyenne. metro police say the man was sort of medical episode. a woman in the passenger seat it went into traffic... and it ended up hitting a pole. the woman was not seriously injured./// ((brian loftus)) > the duo accused of killing a man during an attempted car theft was before a judge today... and got their trials separated. 27 year old kyle staats and 19 year old megan hippie both face charges including first degree murder and attempted robbery with a deadly weapon. they're accused in the murder of 42-year-old neil brian gandler... who was found shot to death in a car outside of the 24 hour fitness near rainbow and alta. hippie told police the pair was committing car burglaries when they found gandler asleep in the car..

the judge approved the motion to separate their cases... hippie will be back for her preliminary hearing on march 8th./// ((brian loftus)) > and the woman accused in the deadly strip crash... will be back in court in a few weeks to hear the case against her. today the judge set a preliminary hearing for lakeisha holloway for february 18th. she faces dozens of charges in the crash that took one life, and sent dozens to the hospital. police say she intentionally drove up onto the side walk in front of planet hollywood, hitting people, while her 3 year old daughter was in the backseat. she told police she had been sleeping in her car, and was stressed./// ((brian loftus)) > metro police just wrapped up a community outreach event... to promote peace.. right near the location that a man was killed yesterday. a man was shot to death at the corner of euclid and russell...that's near charleston and fremont. today metro officers were out trying to connect with that neighborhood... walking the streets and holding a free barbeque. . so far this year... metro police have investigated 12 homicides./// ((brian loftus)) > metro police

for tuesday's 9-1-1 outage.... but there is concern it could happen again. the system was down for about 6 hours. people who needed help got a busy signal, waited nearly an hour for an answer... or were dropped while they spoke with an operator. calls were rerouted to henderson and north las vegas while they tried to fix it. ((assistant sheriff tom roberts, metro: we realize 911 system is lifeline for our community. and when someone calls, there is an expectation that someone will be on the other end to answer that call for help. and for that, i'd like to apologize to the community. )) ((brian loftus)) right now police are still trying to figure out what went wrong to cause the failure... they do not believe it was intentionally caused, but they have not pinpointed how it started either... which has some concerned it could happened again. but the assistant sheriff says they have increased monitoring and staffing on hand to help to make sure it doesn't happen again./// ((brian loftus)) > a convention is underway in las vegas.. that has some animal rights activists up in arms... the safari club international... a hunting club...

last night protesters let them know how they felt... and an online petition has gathered more than 70- thousand signatures to keep the convention from coming here. the convention bring everything from hunting gear to taxidermy displays...it also offers auctions for permits to kill some 600 hundred animals inmore than 30 countries. meanwhile on the republican front... those two front runners are escalating their war of words. weijia jiang has more from new hampshire. republican senator ted cruz fired back at donald trump at a town hall meeting in new hampshire. (cruz) "other candidates including donald trump have been throwing insults my way but i have no interest and do not intend to respond." in a series of tweets, donald trump accused cruz of fraud during the iowa caucuses. the republican party disagreed...and made the results there official. this is really crunch time trump avoided the controversy at a campaign stop but overnight, he sent a tweet...suggesting cruz's tactic was a misdemeanor at minimum. democrats hillary clinton and bernie sanders are preparing for tonight's debate - the first head to head show down after martin o'malley dropped out of the race. at a town hall event last night, the candidates continued to spar over which one of them deserves to be called a progressive. patients in the u-s... all of those but one brought the virus back with them from zika stricken areas. one woman contracted it through sexual contact with someone who had been in venezuela. the virus is spread by mosquitoes... and can cause serious birth defects. the emergency declaration allows crews to spray for mosquitoes... and the c-d-c has activated its operations center to look into it. and light winds, and if you look really hard out from our boulder station camera... you can see a few high thin clouds over the mountains. ........................ these below normal temps are a lot easier to take with the warm sunshine shining on you when you're outside. ............ those morning lows were awfully chilly again today... but they will gradually get milder as the afternoons warm up. it will take a few more days to make a noticeable difference though so hang in there. they will be better by the weekend and next week. ................ we had some areas in the 20s... but most were right around freezing again thanks to clear skies and light winds. highs just made it to upper 40s yesterday. ................... we're right about there already at the lunch hour now... let's check the valley with your most accurate weather now temps right now around town. near 50 degrees in most areas... and eventually getting to the mid 50s in some neighborhoods. .. ....... but that is still below normal which is 60 degrees. mornings should not really be in those cold 30s.

cold nights as we're into february now. ............ our high of 54 today still not quite back to normal yet... which is 60 degrees. the normal low of 41 and we will get there in a few more days. .......... outside the valley right now we have a lot of upper 40s and mid 50s down in laughlin right now. chilly teens in rachel where the morning was down below zero again. ................ slightly warmer today... and look for plenty of sunshine for the rest of the week... as temps finally slide back to normal low 60s by saturday and sunday. then springlike 70s next week! ................. a ridge of high pressure will build over the west to help warm us back up and keep storms heading north well away from us. the jet stream will become very lopsided and the eastern half of the country will get all the cold canadian air by the weekend. .......... rain and some thunderstorms alond the east coast today... but not too many reports of flooding - thank goodness. ............ enjoy your afternoon and then keep the heater on tonight. we'lll warm up steadily through the rest of the week and into

((brian loftus)) > tesla's nevada battery plant isn't creating jobs as fast as expected. the nevada governor's office just released numbers showing 272 people were working at the factory at the end of the year. that's short of the 700 jobs projected when lawmakers approved tesla's 1 point 3 billion dollar, tax incentive package. tesla also invested 374 million dollars in capital in our state so far... that's short of the 1 billion expected. development officials attribute the shortage to tesla building the factory in phases, rather....than all at once./// ((brian loftus)) > a family says their new hoverboard caused a house fire.
