searching for the driver... who took off after hitting and killing a 2- year- old girl. ((kirsten joyce)) a vigil was held last night for little evelyn green. she was struck sunday evening.. outside of her home near lake mead and pecos. emotions ran high... as the girl's mother, vicky davis began physically pushing aside reporters while they were speaking with the child's father, joshua green. evelyn's mother said she got a good look at the driver... because he actually got out of the vehicle and apologized to her before fleeing the scene: (( vicky davis/mother: "the guy came out of the car he talked to me and said i am sorry for what i did like he was drunk and smelled like tequila something on his breath i am sorry for what i did he kept telling me sorry sorry sorry." joshua green/father: " i just want him to turn himself in it's hard for me to say that real hard.")) ((brian loftus)) > the vigil for the little girl.. was held the same night as friends and family gathered to remember a motorcyclist killed over the weekend. that makes 14 people since the start of the new year in metro's jurisdiction. ((kirsten joyce)) and with the temperatures starting to warm up.. more and more people will be out on the roads on motorcycles, bikes, walking, you name it. ((brian loftus)) 8 news now reporter michael stevens is live near decatur and 215 with a warning from police. good morning michael? ((michael stevens)) brian, kirsten... officers say a 27-year old motorcyclist was killed. witnesses told police he was speeding... and rear-ended a car that slowed down to make a right turn. the motorcyclt was taken to the hospital where he later died. in 20-15... 23 people died while riding a motorcycle or moped...

and as the weather gets warmer, more people will be taking their bikes out for a drive.. so metro police want everyone to be careful: ((officer michael rodriguez // metro police: in almost everyone of our accidents involving motorcycles speed is most definitely a factor. )) ((michael stevens)) last year... metro police say there were about 1-hundred and 25-traffic related deaths in their jurisdiction. police call the number both -- "devastating" and "unacceptable." in hopes of stopping the deadly trend this year... metro police has started a traffic safety focus. each month, the department will be joining forces with the nevada highway patrol and the henderson police department to address the on-going problems through education and enforcement. police say this month the focus is on speeding... and officers have been targeting the area's where people are known to drive too fast. brian, kirsten? allegedly beaten by a former metro officer during an arrest... has now filed a federal civil rights lawsuit. the california woman, amanda vizcarrondo- ortiz, is seeking at least 225- thousand dollars in damages... saying she suffered permanent face, neck and back injuries. the lawsuit was filed against richard scavone and his partner for the january 2015 incident. scavone was arresting her on littering and loitering for prostitution charges.... which were later dropped. he allegedly beat her during the arrest... while wearing a body camera.

and has pleaded not guilty to federal excessive force and obstruction charges. he will stand trial march 22nd./// ((brian loftus)) > an inmate accidentally released from an l-a jail was recaptured in boulder city last night. the murder suspect-- steven lawrence wright-- was mistakenly released last month.. while awaiting trial in a gang killing. he was taken into custody without incident and is now being held in nevada, pending an extradition hearing./// ((kirsten joyce)) > new at 6am... the nevada dmv is requesting more money for a virtual line system... that it blamed for long wait times last summer. today, the state board of examiners will consider whether to expand a 5- year contract with vendor, q-less. the cost would increase from 300- thousand to more than 800- thousand dollars. this company is the one who offers 'dash pass' ... the same program the dmv dropped. transportation leaders said no- shows increased overall wait times, however, the company said the fault was dmv understaffing. the dmv then rolled out an improved version of a virtual

allison i'm here in manchester nh where many of the candidates will spend their evening at separate watch parties as they await primary results. but the people of new hampshire have become accustomed to seeing candidates around town, especially in the last week since the iowa caucuses. and the campaigns take a similar tactic here, intimate settings like sports bars and diners become venues for last ditch opportunities to appeal to primary voters on both sides of the aisle. new hampshire voters certainly vet the candidates too. while most polling places haven't opened yet this morning, early surveys of likely primary voters show sanders with a 25 point lead on the democratic side, and show trump cruz and rubio at the top of the republican side with trump in

fbi employees--- hackers released contact information for 20- thousand workers. the leak comes just one day after personal data was released for nearly 10- thousand homeland security employees. the group said the information was pulled from the department of justice database. they were tweeting with the hashtag "free palestine." the justice department is now investigating./// ((brian loftus)) > the animal foundation hopes to save the lives of more healthy and treatable animals by becoming no kill by the end of 20-20. ((kirsten joyce)) but how can a shelter that takes in nearly 30-thousand dogs and cats every year -- change its ways? the foundation has laid out an aggressive plan that the entire community plays a role in.

demetria, what's driving people crazy? demetria obilor this summer, the rtc will launch the valley's first, public bike share system. it will start off downtown and then expand into different parts of town. the rtc wants your help selecting the best bike share locations in the downtown area

< welcome to a brighter morning, this is 8 newsnow with kirsten joyce, sherry swensk, demetria obilor and brian loftus > brian loftus > good morning and thanks for waking up with us. i'm brian loftus. kirsten joyce i'm kirsten joyce. developing at this hour.. at least 9 people are dead after two trains collided head on in germany. ((brian loftus)) this happened overnight.. but it was during what would be germany's morning commute. hundreds of emergency crews responded.. to help the other 150 people who were injured. the german transport minister said in that area.. trains can travel up to 60 miles per hour.. and it's possible they were both going at that speed. they slammed into each other whil on a curve.. so investigators believe the conductors couldn't see the other train and therefore did not brake. that area does have a safety system designed to prevent such a crash... it's unclear why it didn't work. we will continue to keep you updated on this developing story as we learn more.///

((michael stevens)) brian, kirsten... family and friends of the young man gathered last night.. to remember the 27-year-old. police say.. he was speeding on his motorcycle sunday night.. when he rear- ended a car trying to make a turn. but that wasn't the only death sunday... north las vegas police say a 2-year-old girl was killed crossing the street in front of her home. little evelyn green was hit by a van in near pecos and lake mead. the child's mother said the driver smelled the alcohol... and apologized before taking off. police say both of these deaths

if people took the time to stay safe behind the wheel: ((officer michael rodriguez // metro police: we as the police department cannot do this alone. we need participation from everyone in our community. to understand that while this is a police problem -- this is a community problem. it's our family members, our mom's our dad's kids who are getting killed on our roadways and that's simply unacceptable. )) ((michael stevens)) last year... metro police saw 124 traffic related fatalities.... and nearly 40- percent of those involved a pedestrian. in an effort to change the deadly trend the department is teaming up with other agencies... like the nevada highway patrol and henderson police department to address the issues on our roads. metro says they've analyzed the top factors that play a role in these deadly incidents. this month metro police says they're focusing on speeding... adding officers to problem area's in the valley and doing enforcement. brian, kirsten?
