((brian loftus)) > and i'm brian loftus. developing overnight... two people are displaced... after a fire damaged their home near lake mead and sloan early this morning. ((kirsten joyce)) it started in a shed in their backyard at around 3-30... fire crews say it quickly spread and damaged the mobile home. both people inside are okay but one dog was killed. red cross is assisting them this morning./// ((brian loftus)) > good morning and thanks for joining us. i'm brian loftus. ((kirsten joyce)) and i'm kirsten joyce. police say they've located the van...believed to have hit and sunday... ((brian loftus)) and that girl's father...says the suspect girl's father...says the suspect is also behind bars. 2-year-old evelyn green was killed near lake mead and pecos... police say the driver took off after the crash. ((kirsten joyce)) the little girl's father said officers do have their suspect, and that the man turned himself in. we have yet to get that confirmation from police...but this comes as a big relief for the girl's family. ((brian loftus)) right now the family says they are preparing for evelyn's funeral.

you can find more information on our website las vegas now dot com/// ((kirsten joyce)) > somerset academy is responding... after a former teacher was arrested for allegedly having inappropriate contact with 12 -year- old girls. north las vegas police arrested former music teacher william crawford this week. they accuse him of harming 2 girls while teaching at somerset academy. somerset issued a statement last night... they say he worked for them less than three months back in 2012, and didn't know about any claims against him when his employment ended.. if you have any information regarding this case...you're asked to call crime stoppers./// ((kirsten joyce)) > and overnight... an officer was sent to the hospital after police say he was kicked by a suspect. it happened just before 1 this morning near buffalo and summerlin parkway. they say a teenager was naked, jumping on a vehicle and acting aggressive toward police. they say he kicked an officer after he was taken into custody. both the suspect and officer went to the hospital for evaluation.///

back to you. /// brian loftus > mccarran is the 9th busiest airport... but it's getting some first-class recognition. kirsten joyce for the first time since the recession mccarran saw its most amount of people... in 20-15 also last year... j.d. power ranked it among the highest in the country for customer service. brian loftus 8 news now reporter michael stevens spoke with top airport officials about what's leading up to all the success... michael, what did they tell you? ((michael stevens)) brian, kirsten... people here at mccarran say the airport is constantly evolving. last year... mccarran welcomed 45.4- million people... making it the third busiest year in the airport's 67- year history. airport officials tell me they've seen an uptick in both domestic and international travelers.. in fact this year, the airport says they're working with the

visitors authority to attract more people from overseas. inside the terminals... they're even working on transforming some current gates to make them fitted for international passengers. they're expected to open next year. "panzer" roam the halls once a week.. providing comfort. one dog was killed../// ((kirsten joyce)) > the woman who claims she's the victim of police brutality...is now implicating the entire department. ((brian loftus)) and she's speaking out for the first time...only to 8 news now. ((kirsten joyce)) amanda ortiz says former metro police officer richard scavone beat her in january of last year. since she complained, scavone has been fired and indicted federally for excessive use of force and obstruction of justice for lying on a report. ortiz is now suing scavone, the at the scene for monetary compensation for injuries she says she sustained. ((amanda ortiz/claims former anything for me. nobody's helping me with anything. i've been doing everything on my own and i just feel like there should have been more services or something. they say technically i'm a victim but how am i a victim when nobody is reaching to me. i'm reaching out to everybody.)) ((kirsten joyce)) scavone was wearing a body camera and ortiz says the video helps back up her claims. 8 news now requested the video through freedom of information, and the department refuses to release it right now citing a pending criminal case.

sister thomas- joseph mcgoldrick - we came in 1866 at the request of bishop augustin verot. he asked for 8 sisters that would come. father tom willis - i wish you to understand and clearly that it is for the blacks and for them alone that i have the sisters of your order come to my diocese. sister thomas- joseph mcgoldrick - and he made it very clear that they were coming to teach the liberated slaves. that that would be their work here. father tom willis - when they arrived they knew no english so they had to learn the language, they had to learn the culture of st. augustine as it existed in the years after the civil war. sister thomas- joseph mcgoldrick - when they started to teach here they taught children, you know. and only boys came to school originally. but it wasn't too many weeks later that the little girls started to come too and the parents would send the children. and at night we taught the adults. narr - despite their good works, it wasn't long before the sisters were caught in the rising tide of racial segregation. sister thomas- joseph mcgoldrick - it was illegal to teach black people.

about, you know, educating black people. even after the civil war, even after they were free. in 1916 three of our sisters were arrested and it was on easter sunday and they were arrested over at st. benedicts.. the order to arrest them probably came from the governor, narr - these noble sisters became revered by the people they were sent to help. sister thomas- joseph mcgoldrick - the first nun who died here, the black ladies from the cathedral parish .. they took over the funeral. they said "these women came for us, we're gonna take care of this funeral" . and they did.
