beginning of the season, tonight's home game with san jose state would've been penciled in as a 'sure win'. the spartans hadn't beaten a division one team on the road in two years. in fact their last big road win was against reno in 2014. surely the rebels wouldn't have trouble tonight... after all it's san jose state. but unlv is without stephen zimmerman and ben carter. the spartans circle the wagons, they go to work...hitting shots and playing defense. jordan cornish missing easy layups.. he went 0-8 tonight, ouch the short- handed and somewhat uninspired rebs fall behind by 15 points. we found a few first half highlights. the jones dunk and jones again...

but rebs trailed 37- 24 at the half and it was that ugly. in the second half, rebels trailing by 9 with under 10 to play. and couldn't throw a stone in the ocean... missing shot after shot. they hit just 29 percent from the field and were 4-20 from three, hitting just 2 of their last 18 from outside the arc.... nothing falling. that usually spells trouble and unlv was in trouble. but then a spark. rebels rally... they dig it. jones with 14 points, none more impressive then those two. to go with the 18 rebounds... as a team they had 11 offensive boards in the 2nd half. down the stretch... it's jerome seagears... he took the bull by the horns and scores from inside, he finished with 13 points but also had 6 steals. rebs turn to that survival mode and they end up winning 64-61. unlv was out- rebounded, got out-shot from the field and the line , but they somehow end up on the plus side. (( )) todd simon/unlv interim head coach: "not pretty, grinded it out... much better effort in the second half. we want to bury that first half in the back yard and not bring that up if we don't have to. jerome seagears/unlv guard: "we

((chris maathuis)) we end with a real sad and shocking note... the city is mourning the passing of findlay toyota general manager rich abajian. he was a community leader and passionate about unlv football. the 62-year-old played at reno, but coached at unlv during the randall cunningham and ickey woods era. he helped recruit cunningham to las vegas. he was a huge supporter of unlv football program and rebel academics. many of us would see rich on football trips... he wanted so badly for the team to succeed and become a successful program. many of the cars the unlv coaches drive were provided by rich at findlay toyota. his brother said rich passed away overnight from an apparent heart attack. from all of us here at channel 8... and the klas family. our most sincere condolences and prayers going out to the abajian family ((denise valdez)) > we're back
