((sharie johnson)) one person is dead and crash today in the southwest valley. thank you for joining us i'm sharie johnson. it happened just south of cactus ave and decatur. reporter brittany edney--who was first on the scene-- has been following this story and joins us now live. brittany, do we know what the cause was? ((brittany edney)) >> police say what may have started as a family outing in the desert took a deadly turn earlier right behind me.
this 2 seat riser rolled several times, ejecting and killing the male driver. the female passenger was hurt but is expected to be okay. neither person was wearing a seatbelt nor a helmet... ((lt. grant rogers, metro police "this was a very preventable accident." )) ((brittany edney)) the consumer product safety commission says helmets have been known to reduce the risk of death in atv accidents by around 42- percent. and also reduce the possibility of a head injury by 64 percent. ((lt. grant rogers, metro police this is one of those things that you have to take prut are already designed for those vehicles, rather it be a seatbelt or a 5 point harness. just something as simple as a helmet can definitely save life.")) ((brittany edney)) over the past few months , we've seen several off-road deadly accidents involving atvs throughout the valley and nearby areas. investigators ruled many of the deaths were due to drivers losing control or being ejected. ((lt. grant rogers, metro police "we do have some more trails that are more popular for riders out in logandale, in
rock and valley fire but it is a little more common than we would like.")) ((brittany edney)) >> drugs and alcohol are not believed to have been a factor--- there's no word yet on how fast the atv was traveling at the time of the crash. sharie. ((sharie johnson)) >> brittany, with police pushing the importance of wearing helmets for protection... are they required? ((brittany edney)) >> the dmv says helmets are not vehicles... so while there's no law against it, it's still dangerous to go without one. we'll send it back to you./// ((sharie johnson)) many of you taking to our page to offer your condolences for the victim while others think something needs to be done about it. karen wrote... we ride atv's as well... be careful people and prayers to these families. just awful! charles said...
since. i have fond memories of laying down a dirt bike on occasion. sorry for the families. shannon posted... people go flying out in desert on those things going insanely fast usually without helmets. what folks do not realize is you can lose control of the atv very easily when hitting those rocks out in desert or if you are inexperienced and lean too much while turning then they flip over. liz wrote... law, to stop the sales of them. better put some more regulations and make it illegal if rode off a track. ((sharie johnson)) central oklahoma is feeling the after shock of a five-point-o magnitude earthquake. to my left you're seeing images out of cushing oklahoma about a one mile from the quakes epa- center. it was felt about 300 miles away as fas as kansas city missouri
reporting quite a bit of damage. last week a four-point-five magnitude earthquake struck the northern part of oklahoma. the state has had 19 quakes in the past week. scientist have linked these trimmers to underground disposal of waste water from oil and gas production known as fracking. some wells in the region have now been shut down./// weather open day around the valley with a few more clouds factored into the mix to round out the second half of the weekend. most of our sky cameras showing partly clear conditions this afternoon and into the evening. ............... current conditions are nice and warm--continuing our above average trend into the new work week. right now temps. are in the low to upper 60s. ............... let's look ahead at the next couple of hours... your morning planner looks dry
our coolest overnight temps.... in the low 60s with partly sunny skies, upper 60s by 9am. by noon mid 70s with more decreasing clouds. mostly sunny and upper 70s/low 80s by 3pm. .............. ((sharie johnson)) with just two days before the presidential election... we wanted to take a look at voting the last two presidencies, there we're approximately one million, 200 thousand registered voters and 80% turnout. this year there's about one million, 400 thousand regsitered voters. and as of tonight statewide, about 53% of nevadans have voted already. which means come tuesday at least another 695 thousand
((sharie johnson)) >> and those stats could be the reason why a lot of political muscle is being sent to nevada. senator bernie sanders spent the day in the valley campaigning for hillary clinton. (( "hillary clinton and catherine will win if the voter turnout is high. they lose if it's low. you're job is to give us the highest turnout we've ever seen.")) ((sharie johnson)) >> sanders also advocated for catherine cortez masto for u-s senate. sa pass legislation that will help working families and the middle class. and former new york mayor rudy giuliani met with local trump supporters urging them to knock on doors and get people to the polls tuesday. ((rudy giuliani/rallying support for trump: "we think we got, number one the volunteers that are more enthusiastic than theirs. there's are mostly machine politician people part of the old hack harry reid machine which i think nevada is going
((sharie johnson)) >> giuliani says trump will fight for a stronger military to have peace through strength. and told the crowd that clinton can't be trusted to nominate a supreme court justice. it seems every vote will count...with both campaigns hitting hard with grassroots efforts to get out the vote. ((sharie johnson)) and we're your local election headquarters keeping you updated on air and online at las vegas now dot com./// ((sharie johnson)) your ancestral roots? several genealogy tests claim they can map your family tree, so can they unlock the secrets to your past? 8 on your side's michelle mortensen puts the dna test... to the test./// "you're watching the valley's news leader...with sharie johnson, katie boer & jon tritsch.
the desert is where bad guys go when they want to make evidence disappear. but hiding the evidence won't help danny tarkanian. out on for years... ...or all those fake charities he helped set up... ...or the scams against seniors he formed... or the $17 million judgment he never paid. he can try, but he can't make his record disappear. danny tarkanian: just a con man who can't bury the truth. house majority pac is responsible for the content of this advertising. i'm catherine cortez masto and i approve this message. i don't know what i said,
heck says i have "high hopes we'll see donald trump become president." trump: you know, you could see there was blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her wherever. narrator: heck says he "completely supports" trump. i love war in a certain way. narrator: and heck? reporter: do you trust him having his finger on the nuclear button? heck: i do. reporter: why do you say that? heck: why wouldn't i? narrator: donald trump and joe heck.
sharie johnson, katie boer & jon tritsch. this is 8 news now . ." ((sharie johnson)) geneology is more like family tree d-n-a and ancestry dot com ... along with tv shows like "who do you think you are" ... but tonight consumer advocate michelle mortensen finds out if it's really worth the big bucks as she tests out family tree dna. t-v shows like who do you think you are ... prove anything is possible if you have a d-n-a kit and some geneology experts. but do those kits really open
or is it all tv magic? the folks at family tree d-n-a offered me a chance to find out. they sent me a d-n-a kit to unlock my history. i swabbed my cheeks... ((1:36 swabbing )) ((michelle mortensen)) sent off the vials ... and waited for the results. and i was expecting confirmations of the things i knew. like my maternal side is from italy. here's a picture of my grandfather as a boy in petragalla italy with his parents. my grandma .. her mother .. my great, great grandmother albina tiberi was related to the roman emperor tiberius who reigned until the year 37 ad. on my father's side ... there's no royalty ... but quite a a rich history. this is a picture of my great, great grandfather john peter and his family. roy ... that's my great grandfather. at this time the family was known as the mortensen's ... because my great great grandfather john peter was the son of morten jensen.
looking through the family bible .. it was very common in denmark for people's last name's to be the father's name with sen attached. the practice dates back to the early 1700's in our family tree. the family bible also shows the history of my paternal great grandma. she was from england. my dad's mom also had british roots. her mom .. was from scottland ... her dad ... was jewish and originally from russia. see i knew a lot...but my results.. let me show you ... family tree d-n-a sends you an orgins breakdown like this... and this is what surprsied me .. it says i'm 12% italian... not 50%. remember my mom's side is 100% italian according to our records and history. but get this ... it also claims im 27% middle eastern from asia minor... which i've never heard before. but people probably immigrated from there to italy. when you add the percentages
which is almost the 50% i thought i was. another surprise? none of my british heritige showed up at all. and my danish side only came in as 21% ... i presumed it would be higher. adding to the confusing .. my dad did a dna test with another company .. and his results showed he's ... 34% british. but only 15% danish. dad?? when i asked the family tree d-n-a folks they taught me ... we are not 50-50 splits of our parents ... in my case .. i may have gotten more of my dad's danish dna ... than the british. that also means i could have more of my dad's dna than my mom's .. explaining why i'm not 50% italian as thought. ((sharie johnson)) >> to try it yourself... contact family tree d-n-a. prices start at 80 bucks./// ((sharie johnson))
