>> good friday morning, everyone. i'm kendis gibson. >> and i'm adrienne bankert in for diane. we begin with anti-trump anger spilling into the streets again overnight. >> it is happening right now. the protests in portland, oregon, taking a violent turn escalating into what police called a riot as protesters vandalize cars and buildings, smashing windows, hurling projectiles at police. a live look at portland right now in the early morning hours. you can see police in riot gear are still out there in force and made several arrests. people there in custody, and this is after protesters have been throwing glass bottles at officers. officers had to fire some rubber bullets at some point and even disburse mace and pepper spray. the situation there is still ongoing in the downtown area. >> they're calling it criminal activity. this is in the pearl district which used to be a warehouse community there but now has

with several art galleries and businesses, some of those businesses damaged by what police are calling the rioters versus protesters. there were also some violent clashes with police in oakland, california, for a third night along with vandalism and street fires, a day after three police officers were injured and more than two dozen protesters were arrested. in new york city there were markedly smaller crowds gathering at trump tower. hundreds chanting "not my president" and in louisville as many as 3,000 protesters marching through the streets, and here in denver we also have a shot for you there. >> in the meantime, president-elect trump visited the white house yesterday for his first transition meeting in the oval office saying he and president obama had great chemistry. we're going to continue to keep an eye on those protests particularly in portland but as i mentioned, president-elect described his day in the nation's capital as fantastic in stark contrast to the sentiment of many frustrated voters. >> and that anger in the streets

cities at least for now shows no signs of abating. kenneth moton joining us from washington. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, adrienne and kendis. those overnight protests have kept police busy as they work to keep the peace. president-elect donald trump who campaigned as the law and order candidate responded in a tweet. trump's transition, not so peaceful. >> hey, hey, hey. >> reporter: another night of protests against president-elect donald trump, smashed windows in portland, oregon, crowds took over the streets in oakland. in philadelphia and new york they marched. >> these people, unfortunately, they have to get over the results. he won. he won. >> reporter: trump tasked with uniting the country tweeted, "just had a very open and successful presidential election. now professional protesters incited by the media are protesting. very unfair." but it's another trump tweet from four years ago that's resurfacing. trump said the night of president obama's re-election, "we can't let this happen.

and stop this travesty." a different tone yesterday as a more humble president-elect met with president obama for the first time at the white house. >> most of all, i want to emphasize to you, mr. president-elect, that we now are going to want to do everything we can to help you succeed because if you succeed, then the country succeeds. >> we discussed a lot of different situations, some wonderful and some d i very much look forward to dealing with the president in the future. >> reporter: trump also made the rounds on capitol hill meeting with top gop officials and house speaker paul ryan. >> we're looking very much to the future. we're going to look very strongly at health care and we're looking at jobs, big league jobs. >> reporter: trump on a tour while his ex-opponent was on a nature walk.

supporter went for a hike in chappaqua when she bumped into the former democratic nominee out just walking the dogs. and last nightrump also tweeted about his white house meeting saying, fantastic day in d.c., met with president obama for first time. real good meeting. great chemistry. melania liked mrs. o a lot. as for clinton, the capitol hill investigations into her private e-mail server will continue and the trump team says he hasn't ruled out his promise to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate clinton. adrienne and kendis. >> yeah, representative jason chaffetz among those saying they plan to look into those e-mail servers. kenneth moton iwashington, thank you. now the current and future first ladies sat down with each other. michelle obama and melania trump held a private meeting in the white house residence as was the case with their husbands. it was the first time they spoke face-to-face. they discussed raising kids together and mrs. obama showed mrs. trump the former

vice president biden has met with his successor. biden and vice president-elect mike pence discussing pence's upcoming duties. they also looked over biden's policy portfolios. those include the nato alliance and expanding access to the middle class. biden and pence have been friends since they served in congress together from 2001 until 2009. and there's some talk donald trump could be looking inside his own family to find his chief of staff. trump's son-in-law jared kushner was seen walking with obama's chief of staff denis mcdonough kushner married to ivanka trump was also a key adviser during the campaign. the trump team shook things up with the media yesterday breaking protocol and bucking a long-standing practice of allowing reporters to track america's new leader. mr. trump left new york city without pool reporters and kept them in the dark during his historic first meetings with leaders in washington including president obama. one reporter says it sets a dangerous precedent. anyone who has been to new york city knows trump tower is right there on fifth avenue, a

which is now a giant security zone. the tower is now surrounded by what's called unbelievable security measures. some streets have also been closed off in the area and there's also a no-fly zone in a two-mile radius over midtown manhattan. that will be in place until january 21st. there's talk this morning about a possible deal in the trump university fraud case. trump's attorneys have now agreed to enter settlement talks. trump said during the campaign but if it goes to trial later this month as scheduled, the defense wants a delay until after the inauguration. federal judge gonzalo curiel says he's not inclined to delay the case any longer. and in a troubling new development, mr. trump's election victory appears to be unleashing a fresh torrent of hate speech. inside a high school in york, pennsylvania, students held up trump signs chanting white power. and in the cafeteria inside a

so, these stunning images captured the moments of terror on the streets of one brazilian town. an explosion and ball of flames had people running for their lives. some people were knocked to the ground by the powerful blast. the fire started when a car carrying butane gas cylinders caught fire. and it was a close call for a convenience store customer near oklahoma city. out of the way seconds before a car plowed through the front. a police spokesperson says she was surprised no one was injured. the driver says she hit the accelerator instead of the brake. one officer killed and another wounded after being ambushed in pennsylvania. authorities say officer scott bashioum and the wounded officer were immediately fired upon responding to a domestic disturbance call. the suspect and pregnant woman were also found dead. neighbors say police were often called to the home where the shooting took place. raging wildfires in

of emergency. at least 53 active fires are burning in the state scorching nearly 10,000 acres. thousands of firefighters are battling the flames. authorities are also concerned about air quality because of smoke. dozens of residents have been forced to evacuate their homes. fema is offering financial assistance. singer/songwriter leonard cohen has died. ? hallelujah hallelujah ? >> that's cohen performing one of his best-known songs "hallelujah." cohen first came to prominence in the 1960s often writing songs for other artists such as judy collins, james taylor and willie nelson. but he continued writing and performing up until his death. his most recent album was just released last month. leonard cohen was 82. when we come back, a wild scene at a clothing store, a big

in california a big rig fire caused a massive traffic delay. authorities were forced to shut down parts of the 60 freeway near los angeles. the flames also sparked a brush fire that spread to more than two acres before it was contained. witnesses say they heard several explosions as the flames spread. the problem for drivers in california this morning will be at the other end of the state with wet roads there and in ors well as washington. roads could also be slippery in west texas along the border. other than that driving actually looks pretty good. a former illinois congressman has been indicted on charges of abusing public funds.

aaron schock whose capitol hill office was decorated in the style of the show "downton abbey." he resigned from office last year and prosecutors allege that schock used campaign funds to buy world series tickets and then tried to resell them at a profit. other charges include nine counts of wire fraud. we should point out one conviction of wire fraud carries a maximum sentence of 20 years. we're seeing the first dramatic new images from inside the pulse nightclub massacre. police body cameras reveal the aftermath of that shoot-out. once the gunman was killed, terrified survivors came out of hiding. the most disturbing images were removed from the video. 49 people died during the terror attack. the city of orlando plans to turn the nightclub into a memorial. a unique rescue involving two bald eagles. they were stuck in a storm drain. one was able to fly away after about an hour. the second was rescued by experts. they say it's more likely that the two were fighting over territory. the injured eagle was free after about 90 minutes.
