>> in pris, in solitary confinement for more than a year in a cell that was eight steps by five steps big. sarah talked about her time in an iranian prison today on oprah. a look at an emotional interview. >> it was sarah shourd in her own words. she deviated from her scripted statements for the first time today. she relived the first horrifying moment when she realized they were being arrested. >> that was one of the most devastating moments. they tore us apart. three different cells. i screamed all night long. that was when it hit me that we were in prison. >> shourd says they were in iraq's culture and there was nothing on their hike to indicate they were crossing to iran.

shourd's mother was in the audience and they talked about their bond. >> there was only one day that i just gave up. i didn't get out of bed, didn't eat. just cried. didn't speak to the guards. i had to pick myself up and keep going for my mom and for everyone else that loved me and for god. that's what makes you not give up. shourd said she hopes that her fiance and friend will be released as well and added that she has no animosity toward iran's president and hopes to meet with him this week while he's in new york. the clean-up has begun in san bruno. crews spent the day removing the rubble left behind from three of the 35 homes destroyed. workers sprayed the homes with water to prevent dangerous materials from entering the air.

>> it's difficult. i mean, it's two weeks after the event and now, we are going in and removing their home from them, but for the most part, is it positive and they've been thankful this county program. they have enough to worry about right now. >> still, ten homeowners have not signed permits yet to allow the clean-up to go forward. it is expegted to last four weeks. san jose city leaders say their confidence level the higher after meeting with pg&e this afternoon. they want to reassure the able ability to shut down pipelines during an emergencies. >> reporter: the public works director said it was a good conversation and they had a chance to ask pg&e questions. the city is concerned about a high-risk natural gas pipeline

near north 3rd street where you have businesses as well as homes. pg&e told the city to shift around the line is what makes it risky, but the section around the line is not going to be redone until 2012. the hour and a half meeting focused on pg&e's communication with san jose and its ability to react in an emergency. >> i don't need to know exactly where they are, but i wanted to confidence that if there's an event, they have the ability to shut down an area that is as small as possible. >> reporter: the city told us pg&e is interested in holding community meetings with people who live in the area. >> thank you, gorge. pg&e remains under the microscope. the california public utilities commission plans to set up a panel which will look into the factors that contributed to the explosion that killed seven

people. the panel will contist of experts hand picked by the ucpc president. pg&e will have to pay for the investigation. california regulators voted on a resolution today arding the company to fund the project. it's not clear of the cost, but the funds will come from the company's share holding profits. a natural gas line in arenda had people fleeing their homes and left businesses without gas. people say what happened in san bruno, they thought the same thing might be happening to them and they feared the worst. christie smith explains. >> reporter: pg&e worked to get relanga way back in business after a gas line break. nations opened at 6:00, but the grill wasn't fired up. >> i feel bad for everybody who can't have bacon yet. we just offered coffee or pie.

>> reporter: last night, an outside contractor accidentally hit an gas line and 12 homes were evacuated. >> because of the heightened sense of awareness, everybody's initial reaction was let's respond strong and thankfully when we were made aware it was a low pressure line, we were able to scale it back. >> reporter: pg&e says there is a way to check lines first by calling, but accidents are not uncommon during the spring, summer and fall. >> in this case, the contractor did the right thing, but it's common to have these, but it's very easy to dig into a gas or other underground facilities. >> reporter: kevin wong ran to check his office. >> we had to reroute some people, but bottom line, just glad everybody's safe.

he's apparently going for a run. a man suspected of trying to rape a jogger on a popular trail. take a good look. the suspect described as a hispanic male in his mid-20s, brown hair, brown eyes. the woman attacked was running down along the coyote park trail sunday morning. she did fight back, kicking and screaming until the attacker ran away. an emotional day in court for the family of a san francisco police officer killed in the line of duty. he had parked his cruiser, hoping to stop a driver leading officers on a high speed chase in 2006, but he slammed the

stolen van right into the cruiser, hitting and killing the 39-year-old officer. his father says while he misses his son, he forgives patrelli. >> patrelli, we forgive you, make mistakes. for your family, we bear no judge. >> he could be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. he is scheduled to be back in court in october. smuggling coke in their carry on luggage. federal investigators say the suspects transported large amounts of drugs and cash on commercial flights and they did it for a decade. jodi hernandez is live in the east bay tonight. that's where a lot of these suspects live? >> reporter: that's right. one lives right here in this hercules neighborhood, probably

the last place you'd expect to find a suspected drug dealer. this spells out an elaborate operation. the suspects transported drugs on commercial airplanes for a decade. >> he's like the one, says hi all the time. >> reporter: but federal investigators say the man who lives in this well-kept house is part of a major drug smuggling ring. 41-year-old herbert plaque and 21 others took part in a ten-year long conspiracy to distribute cocaine. they used commercial airlines to fly the drugs to pennsylvania. >> makes me even more crazy. it's supposed to be even more secure than ever and they're getting cocaine through there or something. what, in suitcases?

>> reporter: but last year, one of the suspects slipped up. one tried to smuggle 19 kill grams of cocaine to pittsburgh, but the suitcase didn't fit in the overhead compartment. after getting checked into cargo, the suitcase was unloaded in vegas. they caught mitchell after he filed a lost baggage claim. but how the operation went undetected for a year is unclear. the father of two is accused of being a part of it. he said he's always seemed like a friendly family man. >> that's my favorite neighbor. that's like the guy. he's a cool guy, you know. >> now, i did contact the tsa today to ask them how cocaine could have gotten through security for so many mere years.

you better sit down for this one because we have progress to report. a spokesperson for governor schwarzenegger says he and lawmakers have reached a framework of an agreement on a new state budget. the so-called big five spent a second day trying hammer out that framework. thai meeting in southern california since the governor has been recovering from an illness. a spokesperson says they will continue to work through the framework over the weekend and hope to have a deal on monday. the state has been without a budget for 85 days. the longest in state history. a new poll shows jerry brown and meg whitman are in a dead heat. the poll shows whitman gaining

among women. female voters are evenly divided between the two candidates a rarity in california, where women historically vote for democrats. independents split, suggesting a down to wire race. jerry brown used a newark campaign stop day. said peterson dean, the nation's largest roofing company, brown attacked proposition 23, which would suspend california's clean air standards. he outlined his plan to create green jobs in california, saying sol lar technology is an area where the state can lead. >> this is a small company, but it's thousands of small companies like this that build the economy. my plan is to create 500,000

jobs over the next ten years. >> brown called prop 23 a quote, dirty energy proposition pointing out its backed by three out of state oil companies trying to bamboozle the voters. >> meg whitman came out against prop 23. voters passed the climate change law, but it was suspended until the state's unemployment dropping to 5.5%. for mobt p months, whitman hasn't taken a position on 23, saying she'd only suspend it for a year. today though, she took a stand, saying she is officially against prop 23. nbc bay area will be airing a governor's debate on october 12th. tom brokaw will moderate the debate. coverage begins at 6:30 and we'll have it on our website.

major provisions of the new health care law kicked in today. requirements include free preventive care. young people can remain on parents' insurance until age 26. no lifetime limits on coverage and no more dropping people from coverage when they get sick, but some warn this comes at a steep price. >> people are going to see higher costs associated with the new benefits. they're required to have more coverage. >> patient advocates say this is just the beginning and that the real changes will come in 2014, when all americans will have some form of health insurance. the new changes immediately
