nbc bay area's kimberly terry is in san jose where some seniors are suffering during the cold snap but we want to begin with rob, tracking the freezing temperatures from our weather center where you're a little bit warmer than being outside. hello. >> indeed, it's nice and comfortable inside the studio. different story in walnut creek and in concord. you saw the skating rink around walnut creek. you could probably start your own right now. concord 30. 39 in san jose. very interesting tonight, we do have some winds out of the north which are keeping some of the temperatures up around the north bay an out towards the delta. but with the wind and that cold air we have the windchill factor in effect tonight. we've got a feels like temperature combining the wind speed and the air temperature already feeling like the low 30s inland around the bay area. frost advisory tonight for san francisco but bay area wide, including the inner east bay and oakland. freeze warning for some of the coldest temperatures by tomorrow morning. especially south of san jose into the mid to upper 20s as you

wake up tomorrow morning, so you could have some patchy ice or frost and another change we're seeing in the forecast now it looks like the chilly temperatures and subfreezing temperatures are going to be sticking around longer now in our seven-day forecast. looking at that coming up in the complete forecast in a few minutes. >> thank you, rob. apartment complex in san jose has been without hot water for more than a week now and the beam who live there are mostly elderly and disabled. they say they want a solution and fast, especially during the freezing temperatures. nbc bay area's kimberly terry is there with what's happen ing there. >> reporter: diane, it is cold out here in san jose. tonight it's expected to get into the 20s and 30s in some spots. and that's bad news for 200 tenants who have been without hot water, some tell us it's been a nightmare. >> everybody is frustrated. everybody in here is frustrated. it's not healthy. i don't like it. you know, it's not a healthy thing to be doing. washing your dish necessary cold water. you're not getting rid of the

bacteria. that's what i'm afraid of. >> reporter: disabled tenants living in this 212-unit apartment building in san jose have had problems getting hot water since december 3rd. >> we're told, catch it when you can. >> reporter: tenants say they've tried to do that. but the water doesn't stay hot long enough even for a quick shower. >> by the time i put on my soap and everything, ice cold. this morning i -- it's easy for me to catch cold that way. >> luke warm. >> yeah, this is not hot at all. when you get in there when the water is hot and then it turns cold, that can be rather shocking for somebody who is 70 to 80 to 90 years old. >> reporter: we asked to speak for management but instead issued a statement from a firm which represents the town park towers. the statement says, the problem with the solar heating system was immediately addressed and repaired on december 3rd. but then another problem was discovered. it goes on to say, as of noon today, quote, the replacement boiler system is providing

residents with hot water while we make repairs. >> i have ice cold. >> i know. >> reporter: this evening we went inside two different units and left the tap and shower running. after five minutes, one had warm water. >> it's warm. i mean, i would take a shower. >> you wouldn't jump in the shower right now. >> if i did, not very long. >> it's almost cold. >> reporter: the other was still ice cold. >> it's been said, this is an emergency because we have heat. well, as far as i am concerned, it is a an emergency. the flu epidemic is going around. >> i have twin granddaughters. i can't even go around them because i'm afraid they're going to get something, you know, from me, carrying my germs to them. >> reporter: i spoke with city council member tonight who says he's concerned and plans to get to the bottom of this. live in san jose, kimberly terry, nbc bay area news. >> kimberly, thank you. stay with us for continuing coverage of the winter blast. our website is updated around the clock.

if you click on the weather tab you will find the latest on any severe weather at "american idol" lerts, as well. fire damaged the home this afternoon in east san jose and the cause may be weather related. firefighters responded to the two-story home in the eastern foothills around 3:30. officials say the entire roof was on fire when they arrived. they say it quickly spread because it was an older wood shake roof. other factors made putting out the fire even more difficult. >> a lot of problems with collapse hazards due to the roof burning and collapsing into the structure. also significant water supply problems up here in the foothilling. real tight roads, poor access. it's been a stubborn, difficult fire for the people tonight. >> all people were able to evacuate and no one was hurt. the cause of the fire is still under investigation but residents said they had a fire going in the fireplace when the fire broke out. 25-year-old man is behind bars tonight after police say he broke into a woman's apartment

in san francisco and raped her. investigators say 25-year-old jones of marin city forced his way into a 26-year-old woman's home just as she was coming in the door last night. she told police he forced her to the floor, threatened to kill her, demanded money and raped her. neighbor called 911 kurg the attack and officers say jones tried to flee but they tracked him down and arrested him. more than a dozen people at the hilton hotel in downtown san jose ended up sick this afternoon. hazmat crews responded to the scene just before 11:00. paramedics treated 13 people at the scene which complained of irritation to the throat and eyes. they believe they were exposed to some type of chemical but sill investigating that. there was laughter, surprise, screams of excitement and tears at tonight's golden globes. one of the most emotional moments came by a speech by actress jodie foster when she reached out toer 84-year-old mother who suffers from dementia. >> i love you. i love you. i love you.

i hope that if i say this three times it will magically and perfectly enter into your soul, fill you with grace and the joy of know that you did good in this life, you're a great mom. please take that with you when you're finally okay to go. >> foster was honored tonight with the cecil b. award for lifetime achievement. the biggest surprise guest, there he is. president bill clinton who introduced the movie "lincoln." daniel day-lewis who played the role of lincoln won best actor in a drama tonight. the host of tonight's award show poked harmless fun at themselves and the nominees giving the show a much lighter atmosphere than the last few years when ricky gervais hosted. after the awards are the parties, right? nbc universal after party is drawing the crowd, partly because of the weather. what's going on? >> reporter: diane, i would show you my dress if it was even ten degrees warmer, but me wearing

"the plug" will soon be pulled. controversial and big money deal, they sold their network to al jazeera. many people turn to al jazeera for quality journalism but others belief it's antiamerican. whatever your belief, al jazeera is now coming to u.s. airwaves thanks to former vice president al gore and his business partner joe hyatt. they've been heavily criticized and declined all interview requests from the middle east to the bay area. but that changes tonight. nbc anchor raj has the interview with joel hyatt. >> i don't quite get this. we have the garden. rip that off and put in another

garden. >> reporter: there's a good chance you've never seen or heard of joel hyatt. >> that's a great idea! that's what we ended up doing. >> reporter: until now. the unassuming multimillionaire has pulled off a deal, along with his business partner, former vice president al gore, that has shocked the media world. >> hello there, i have the headlines from al jazeera. >> we studied very hard what al jazeera was doing around the world and made sure we were comfortable with it. al jazeera is carried on the israel's satellite. i think the american public is going to find they will be, as well. >> reporter: gone is san francisco based current tv, a ground-breaking network that never really got off the ground. but hyatt and gore soared, selling current for a reported $500 million to al jazeera english, a tv network that's financed by the oil-rich country of qatar.

hyatt is proud, reflective, and a little agitated. >> what some of the press has been negative, i will say highly hypocritical. it's basically been fox news and "wall street journal," both of which are owned by news corp and news corp second largest owner is the saudi royal family. so this idea that they're criticizing a al gore and i would do nis with arabs is really quite remarkable and they don't even disclose that their company is owned in significant part by arabs. >> but this is just sleazy, al. this is disgraceful. >> is it ironic for you or as some critics say, disengeneral was that your friend and partner al gore would sell to a broadcast company funded basically by oil? >> none at all. look, again, i get the sort of easy shock that you see. >> you see where people are coming from? >> of course. here's what i know. both al and i to a much greater extent al has had extensive

conversations with al jazeera about issue of climate change and we actually believe their going to do a very good job covering this issue that the way the u.s. press does not. >> you've been around the block. you know that the public perception here in the united states of al jazeera is negative. were you prepared for any sort of criticism that you guys are taking? >> i evaluated that very carefully. and at the end of the day, raj, what i believed was, it was clear that those who know are very impressed with al jazeera and with the high quality and professional journalism it does. those who don't know have a biased-based on their lack of knowledge. but think about that. i mean, you know, ignorance breeds biased breeds all kinds of problems in the world. and the whole point of journalism is to provide the information to the people who don't know so that they can become people who do, and al and i i didn't want to base a decision on those who don't know

and the uninformed biases they may have. >> all hands meeting at current with the new jazeera, a few of them. how did that go? transition is always difficult. >> i think it went very well. frankly, i think the new leadership is responsible for that. i gave a talk and turned the floor over. but the fact is the staff was, you know, really eager to hear what the new leadership had to say. and they were very, very good. >> any disappointments at current leaving? >> sure. you always have disappointments. i have disappointments about things we would have libd to achieve but didn't. we were never able to bring the large-scale resources necessary to compete. and this is the real lesson to me. the media industry requires large-scale resources. >> al jazeera be able to make a move forward? >> absolutely. they're going to be able to do the marketing we couldn't afford to do. i think it will make a very big difference. >> so by this spring al jazeera english should be up and running in new york city.

that means the san francisco facility will be shut down. we posted the segment on our website as well, as well as raj's other high profile interviews approximately all you have to do is go to nbcarea.c nbcarea.com/theinterview. people across the bay area are bundled up tonight. temperatures continue to drop. and we are going to check in again with meteorologist rob miata. it's cold out there. >> there's a lot of cold on the map. it's unusual to step outside at 10:00 and scrape the frost off the car. mid 30s and low 30 nasdaq concord. 39 degrees in san jose. a bit warmer, though. napa, fairfield, san francisco and oakland, very interesting tonight. even though the dew point temperatures are indicating the air is colder and dryer than it was last night at the same time. these are the temperatures, upper teens and 20s, if the winds were light and skies were clear, we would see temperature trying to drop as low as those levels.

it's probably not going to be quite that cold because we've got the north winds picking up with high pressure building in from the west that at least in the hilltop tonight will keep it in the 40s. it may not be quite as cold around the north and east bay valleys. wind protected valleys certainly will wake up tomorrow morning seeing 20s and 30s for about 9:00. so we're going to be in this cold pattern through mid morning and will reset everything again tomorrow night on into looks like tuesday morning. more frost. and eventually those temperatures climb up during the day. high pressure starts to build and the numbers climb up. very interesting this morning. we started off in the bay area, 7:00. mid to upper 20s. meantime, starts of alaska, june no and anchorage, this pattern you can see high pressure and warmer air. dropping down into california. that was the story of the weekend. for the workweek ahead we're going see high pressure building back into the west coast which will lead to some warmer days. the morning with that dry air in place likely to stay chill

where. we will go from mornings in the 20s and low 30s by the end of the week, i think we're going to see 30s and 40s. so patchy frost still a possibility as we go through week even as our daytime temperatures start to warm up. here's the future cast. notice we're starting at 8:00. go through the whole day. really can't see any clouds. no fog out there. no high clouds either. we could use some of the fog to act like a blanket overnight. the air is too dry right now to see any clouds. as high pressure builds in, that will also continue to keep the clouds away. wind protected valleys tonight. 20s to 30s out there in the hillville where the winds will keep going overnight. maybe 40s outside for tomorrow morning. 50 in san jose. once again. not much change from today's highs. 40s to 50s along the tri valley and low 50s for the north bay. by the end of the week we will finally see the daytime highs climbing up as we past wednesday. three-day forecast looks dry. seven-day forecast looking dry. into next weekend, if you want to find the nicest outdoor days

many people are of course concerned about the deadly and growing flu epidemic. for some the weekend was the time to get a dploou shot, if you can find it. nbc's ron mott has more. >> reporter: as people flock to new york central park today to enjoy unseasonably mild temperatures the flu, or at least talk of it, wasn't far behind. alex is here because his son ray's play date came down with the flu. >> ray's little friend today

was -- we were supposed to play this morning. and we got a call the morning, the kid is sick, so we couldn't do that obviously. >> reporter: the flu is serious business. hitting the nation from coast to coast, wide spread in 47 states, according to the cdc, with rising death tolls. 14 fatal cases in new hampshire, 27 deaths in minnesota, another 6 in washington state. >> i consider myself very lucky today. >> reporter: victoria got a shot from this clinic's last vial. >> i've seen it worse a couple years ago, definitely with the bird flu. but this is right now we're seeing a nice spike. >> reporter: saturday new york's governor declared a public health emergency, allowing more people easier access to the vaccine. every county in new york and the five burroughs in new york city are reporting flu cases, nearly 20,000 in all, about four times as many as last year. in boston free clinics were packed again today. four days after that city's mayor declared a public health

emergency. >> not only do we have a lot more cases, but we have a lot of cases where people are getting really sick. >> reporter: and with colder weather blanketing the west, higher incidences there. >> i can't tell you exactly how severe influenza will be on the west coast but it will certainly make a lot of people ill. >> reporter: back in central park, elijah's mom said he got a shot, but if he somehow gets the flu, he will keep them from others. >> it's your moral obligation. >> reporter: hoping that spreads faster than the bug. ron mott, nbc news, new york. gas prices across the couldn'try are up almost seven cent ngs some places. here in bay ear it's all over the place. in san francisco, it costs $3.68, which is the same as month ago. in san jose, though, it's $3.60, up about six cents. in oakland it's up three cents. prices had dropped between october and december. experts say prices will likely continue to slowly increase.

dozens of demonstrators gathered at golden gate bridge today to protest the continued operation of guantanamo bay prison. they carried signs and pressed as prisoners for a march across the bridge. they say they chose that location for its visibility and popularity with tourists. they consider what is happening at guantanamo illegal. >>80 of them have been cleared for release and they have been unable to find anywhere to send them and that's unconscionable. these people need to go to somewhere where they can begin their lives again, the remaining people at guantanamo deserve to be tried. >> friday marked the 11th anniversary of the creation of guantanamo bay prison. lance armstrong says he's ready to speak about doping allegations against him in his upcoming interview with oprah winfrey. the cyclist is taping the interview tomorrow and says he's ready to speak candidly.

armstrong who is strongly denied the doping charges for years, was stripped of his seven tour de france titles a few months ago after the u.s. anti-doping agency released a detailed report. the interview with oprah is scheduled to air this thursday. and just ahead, the stuff that left people a little puzzled as they rode public transportation in san francisco today. we'll explain. here's a bit from president bill clinton at the award show tonight comparing "lincoln" to his experience in the white house. >> a tough fight to push a bill through a bitterly divided house of representatives. winning it required the president to make a lot of unsavory deals. they had nothing to do with the big issue. i wouldn't know anything about that.

same numbers again as we head into tomorrow morning. we had 20 nasdaq campbell. you can see lafayette and pleasanton in the mid 20s this morning. right now we have 30s and 40s outside. coldest spot, concord where the winds are light. very dry air out there helping our temperatures drop off. some spots in the north bay and the east bay hills, if you've got winds going tonight that's a little bit of good news. it will keep the temperatures up in the hills in the 40s. but wind protected valleys, 20s and 30s as you wake up tomorrow morning through 9:00. that's when the freeze warnings will expire. we're going to probably have more tuesday morning than just a slow warm-up as we go through the week. the reason why is this high. all that cold air which has been dipping down into california, more of it is going to move off to the east. warming mainly in the daytime hours. morning temperatures are going to still stay quite cold. 30s and 40s for morning temperatures for the second half of the week. hour by hour tomorrow, mainly clear skies. very cold start. it's going to feel like you're

at southlake tahoe during the afternoon. you think of highs in the 40s and 50s. you think of the sierra. but that's what we'll have again tomorrow. highs may be in the warmest spots. north winds during the afternoon. could get some mid 50s for the day tomorrow. in the knot bay, if you want to see warmer temperatures for the rest of the bay area, you're probably going to have to wait until thursday and friday. second half of the week does look warmer. the mornings, i think, are going to stay cold enough. the air is still quite dry. that patchy frost may stick around and follow us into next weekend. at least the days will be a little more comfortable outside. no more 40s for highs. >> it's been driving me crazy. henry was making fun of me about the basketball highlights he didn't show. i went looking. cal beat pepperdine and the big upset, cal women beat stanford women. huge upset there. sorry for my husband who went to stanford. thank you, rob. it's not unusual for hundreds of people in the bay area to take public

one of san francisco's most recognizable residents died last week, vivian brown, half of the famous brown twins. well, nbc bay area has reaction from those who knew the twins well. >> reporter: san francisco has

long been a city of characters, the unusual, the eclectic, the unique. >> the city is made up of icons. this city is made up of historical spots. the brown twins represented a part of that. >> she was a little full. >> reporter: for decades twins vivian and marianne brown had locals and visitors seeing double. >> they wander all over town, extremely well dressed and cheerful and with a great smile. they were good. >> they are so cute. >> reporter: the twins were colorful fixtures in union square and knob hill where they lived. they were quick with a simultaneous smile or wave. always dressed to the nines in matching outfits, happy to pose for a picture. >> many tourists and local people wait for the cable car stop and ask them for a picture. always a good moment with them. >> hi, i'm vivian. >> reporter: recently older sister vivian was stricken with alzheimer's and placed in a

senior care home separating the sisters for the first time. she died late wednesday night at the age of 85. >> loss for us. >> reporter: the loss was felt in all the haunts the twins frequented, from uncle pizza to scalia's restaurant where they ate every saturday night at their own special team. >> it's almost like they're stars group almost feel like, can i say hello, can i'm not say hello. and they will say hello first so it doesn't matter. >> reporter: the twins were ambassadors for the city by the bay appearing in numerous advertisements. >> they have made a business out of this for just being friendly and local and identical. >> reporter: mayor ed lee said the city was heartbroken by the loss. marianne brown declined interview requests today. but the emptiness in the streets where the twins would charm anyone who came upon them spoke volumes. >> so cute. i love you. >> reporter: nbc bay area news.

>> they are pretty adorable. flights coming in sfo tonight could be delayed because of construction work. airport officials say crews are working on one of the runways. tonight's work started around 5:30 and ended at 11:00. flights that are delayed are estimated to be 45 minutes late. expect more delays over the next few weekends, though. there are two more closures scheduled for this month. the 49ers weren't the only ones busy yesterday at candlestick park. san francisco police department had their hands full, too, trying to keep things in order. of the sold out crowd of nearly 70,000 people police are report that the ejected almost 100 people from the game. they also arrested 25 people for public intoxication. and 62 people had to be treated for injuries by on-site medical staff. the 49ers added security at candlestick after a preseason game in 2011 against the raiders that turned violent. there's more security, limited tailgating, and a crack down on drinking at games now. we've also been showing you all the memorable moments from the golden globes tonight.

these cold mornings have been gusty winds. santa rosa, napa, 10 to 20. we have a little bit of a windchill factor. that's a combination of wind speed and air temperature. feels like low 30s outside. 36, that's what it feels like outside, livermore. san francisco tonight, freeze warnings up for the inner east bay. oakland near the water around the marina up towards richmond, too. we don't see that too often. that close to the edge of the bay. and same story into san jose and morgan hill. you have that freeze warning up. temperatures are cold and that's going to stay up until 9:00 tomorrow morning. as you wake up it's going to be bone chilling cold around the bay area. exceptional will be the places that have the breezes in the tort and east bay. by lunchtime, watch santa rosa, napa. helps to warm things up slightly. mid 50s in santa rosa tomorrow. the rest of the bay area really not going to see much in the way of warming until we get about towards thursday and friday. that's when we could see 60s by
