good evening. thank you for joining us. >> in the south bay tonight, a story of heart break and devastation. a man, a father, gun down in a road rage incident. now his wife desperately asking the community for help. nbc is live with the latest on the investigation and what officers are doing to help this family. >> this evening we sat down with the victim's widow who tells us

she is already overwhelmed with grief over the loss of her husband but also worried about how her family can afford to live without him. flue a translator she toldj4zc why her husband was taken so suddenly and violently. >>. >> translator: right now she is, she doesn't remember much. she just lost her husband. the kids just lost a father. >> reporter: tuesday morning police say phouc lam was shot multiple times a few miles from his home. there was a near collision between car he was driving and the suspect's vehicle. police say when lam got out of his car to speak to the other driver, a passenger in that car shot him. police are still looking for the suspects. lam who would have turned 38 next month died at the hospital. >> translator: she wants people to know her husband was a good

husband, good father. >> reporter: he worked 17 hours a day seven days a week. he shuttled people from san francisco to los angeles and back again. >> translator: her husband is the only bread winner in the family. he is the one that bring in the financial support for entire family. right now just financially, she doesn't know how she is going to manage. the rent, the food, everything else. >> reporter: one child has severe autism and needs constant care. she is also struggling with personal health problems. with her own family in vietnam she is asking for support from the community. >> this is all about the kids. the family left behind. >> reporter: the san jose police officer who patrolled the area where it happened took it upon himself to do something and established this web page to collect donations. >> especially in the long run, they are going to need every single penny we can give to them

because you know, this story will fade out and who is going to remember those kids? >> reporter: in the last 23 hours, close to $13,000 has been raised so far for the family. live in san jose. nbc bay area news. >> if you would like to help out the family, we have a link on our website. it is the top story on our home page. he made history before even putting on a professional jersey today. the nfl drafted the first openly gay football player and now we're hearing from him for the first time since that announcement. nbc bay area's cheryl is on treasure island with more. >> reporter: good evening. sports fans are definitely reacting to the first openly gay drafted by the nfl. there has been a lot of speculation about this. now that this day is here, michael sam is saying he just wants to play football.

>> the 2014 nfl draft. the st. louis rams select michael sams. >> reporter: michael sam was overcome with emotion when he got the news. he was selected late in the seventh round to become a st. louis ram. he expressed his emotion tonight. >> i'm proud to give everything i've got for st. louis. so many people are proud of the st. louis organization, for being the one to make history. >> reporter: sam is the first openly gay player to be drafted in the nfl. he is aware of his status in the history books. >> hey, will there be idiots out there that say some stupid stuff? yeah. i'm not worried about that. i'm worried about the guy next to me, the guy in front of me. i have to prove myself. >> reporter: sam said he is determined to prove he is a good professional football player who happens to be gay. when the s.e.c. co-defensive player of the year came out in

february, there was a lot of talk about teams shying away from choosing him because of his sexual orientation. the rams coach jeff fisher. >> you know, this is the second historic moment in the history of the franchise. the rams in 1946, i don't know if you're aware. we're the first team to sign an african-american player. a year before jackie robinson signed the contract. >> reporter: meanwhile, people in the sports bar reacted quickly. >> really excited that he got drafted. i'm excited that a team took a chance and they didn't worry about, you know, whether he was gay or straight. in the nfl they said they didn't care. now it proves that they don't care. >> reporter: the 49er general manager reacting. he said he is happy for michael sam but he wishes he had gone

into a a different team. not looking forward to playing against him. more details on a move to change the definition of marriage in california. they're working to change the phrasing in the state family code. this comes after the u.s. and state supreme court allowed same sex marriages to resume last year. the curveball code said marriage must be between a man and a woman. it call for using gender neutral terms to pass out with two republicans supporting it. >> there wasn't a definition of marriage. it changes the code to be consistent. a lot of the different codes say husband and wife. this changed it to be spouse. >> reporter: the bill also calls to recognize all same sex marriages performed out of the state. current law only recognizes out of state marriages before 2008. new at 11:00, we are hearing from that chp office here rescued a tinly dog from the middle of the freeway in the east bay. the officer spotted the

chihuahua on interstate 680 yesterday. the chp tweeted out this photo of the rescue. we're told officers surrounded the little dog to make sure it did not get away and get hurt. then they even tried a treat to get it to move closer. >> it was actually trail mix. i had some trail mix in my saddle bag. i have two dogs myself, one is a rescue. i would like to encourage everybody to try to rescue any dog that they can. animal control has been inundated call for this particular dog because of the story. but don't be discouraged. >> lots of animals to be documented. the dog is safe now at contra costa animal shelter with plenty of people lining up to adopt it. it didn't have a collar or any other identification. an officer involved shooting ended with at least one man injured and another under arrest. the deputies say it started with a robbery is a 7-eleven store. according to deputies they

attempted to stop two suspects at the scene when one man reached into his waist band and that's when one deputy opened fire. the other man took off in his car. he crashed the vehicle after a high-speed chase. >> we did confirm the store had been robbed. we recovered the money on one of the suspects and the clerk was smacked around a little bit by the suspects during the commission of the robbery. >> deputies say they have not found the suspect's gun at the crime scene or the getaway car. >> it might be worth your while to check out theqnnv facebook of the fremont police department. the new pictures are of 26 stolen bicycles and they wants to return them to their rightful owners. they were found near the fremont hub shopping central. a previous ten an left them behind. they believe the bikes were stolen. if yours was stolen recently,

it's been almost a full month since terrorists kidnapped more than 250 girls in nigeria. it has sparked protests from nigeria and washington, d.c. today the first lady spoke to the nation about the crime. >> reporter: at a high school located just east of albany, new york, teens have taken up the cause more than half a world away. >> the more people bring attention to this issue, the

better. >> reporter: in big cities and small towns across the nation, that attention is growing. hundreds gathered to show support for the more than 250 nigerian school girls kidnapped from their dorm rooms two months ago. >> they need to know world is with them. >> reporter: from detroit to boston. >> we're making our voices here. heard here today. >> reporter: and all the way to the white house where first lady michelle obama used her first ever solo weekly address to speak out. >> this unconscionable act was committed by a terrorist group determined to keep these girls from getting an education. grown men attempting to snuff out the aspirations of young girls. >> reporter: she said in these girls, she and the president see their own daughters. >> we can only imagine the anguish their parents are feeling right now. >> reporter: it is an anguish that has touched off protests worldwide. in the u.s., a show of unity and hope for the nearly 300 girls

still missing. nbc news. silicon valley executive. that may be the new name for dr. dre. for beats electronics. the company makes high end head phones and operates a streaming service. the rapper and producer may join apple in a senior role. they say it may help apple score deals with record labels and may help apple attract younger customers. bay area stores are helping sons and daughters. the goal, to make mom feel like a clean tomorrow. business is booming for flower stores like this one in san leandro. workers saw a steady flow of customer orders for mother's day. >> i think the economy has gotten a lot better. it is very busy in here.

we have people in and out all day, all day long. >> roses and littleries the most popular flowers for customers. for tomorrow. >> what are diane's favorite flowers? >> the children are asleep. tulips. tulips are my personal favorite. but sort of out of season right now. spring hits and then they're done. >> where can we get some tulips this time of night? >> the home of all the tulips on the west coast. >> amazing. there may be time to fly them down. they're in nevada by now. it was very windy. we had gusts up to 45 miles an hour. the winds have backed off. with the cooler drier air moving in, it will be chilly out there. 40s and 50s to get your day

started. for mom's days plans early original you'll want a jacket in the morning but not for the afternoon. we'll see temperatures in the 80s in the afternoon. the winds will pick up a little bit but not as gusty as we've seen. with the winds changing direction, the reason the temperatures will start to come up over the next several days. you've got the clearing skies. snow in the sierra has shut down. an easy drive as you head to the high country. that's good news if your mother's day plans include tomorrow. warmer temperatures for all locations, even out toward the coast. as the wind pattern begins to shift. that low that brought the weird weather to the sierra will be moving on. the wind speeds are backing off. as these winds change direction and become out of the north, that will lead to the temperatures climbing up. starting tomorrow, we're talking 80s inland. we're going way past the 80s and seeing temperatures in the mid to upper 90s by the time we hit

toward wednesday, including by the way, san francisco. you will see the temperatures really climbing up as we head toward wednesday. the peak of the heat will be right around wednesday and thursday as the high is at its strongest. by thursday and friday we'll see a frontal boundary that will cool things off. encourage the sea breeze to drop the temperatures down toward friday. sunday looks plenty fine. 78 degrees, mid 70s around the peninsula. low 70s. the hottest days of the week coming up as we go toward wednesday and thursday. that means the hottest valley locations can be close to 100 and san francisco, tuesday and wednesday. mid 80s to near 90 degrees. even santa cruz will see highs ever highs approaching the 90s. summer is officially here toward the middle part of the week. >> i'm in a state of shock that rod knew where to get tulips.
