its own tomorrow. first the winds picking up out of the south during the day, good enough for a wind advisory, starting 2:00 tomorrow. and rain projections saturday into sunday, mock impressive for the south bay. the second storm bringing higher rain totals, perhaps inches 2 to 3 inches or more in the santa cruz mountains. we'll go through the time line of the next storm and how it will impact your weekend plans in a few minutes. back to you. >> see you soon. thank you, rob. we continue our storm coverage in san francisco, where the rain triggered some power problems. chrissy smith is live in san francisco where crews are still working at this hour. christie. >> reporter: we're getting a break from the crin right now, but pg&e has been out in this area working on downed power lines all day. you can see what's going on here. what they tell me is that weather may have caused a pole fire which could have affected a transformer. one man noticed a flame and caught what happened next on tape. preston sale says he pulled out

his cell phone when he saw a utility pole burning in san francisco in the rain. >> i thought it was going to fall into the street. and nobody was talking around or anything like that so everybody was safe. but that was a pretty unique experience. >> reporter: power lines fell. pg&e worked on a repair all day as a spokesperson says dust and dirt can accumulate in the dry season. after the first rain, it can turn to mud and conduct electricity. flashovers can occur. liu dang says his workers can't do much without power. >> i told them to stay inside and make sure everybody is safe. >> reporter: what are you going to do for the day? >> we had to close. >> reporter: in the mission, traffic signals at 20th and valencia went dark. traffic in the city was snarled, as wet roads made for slow-going. tree branches fell, and umbrellas were back out for fall. >> rained a little bit harder, but not that bad. >> reporter: a spokesperson for

pg&e says 83 customers right now in san francisco are without power. most of them in this area. they hope to have power fully restored, they say, within the hour. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, nbc bay area news. >> christie, thank you. among the trouble spots in the bay area, near los gatos, near the burn zone of last week's loma fire. robert handa is there. the concern is mudslides and erosion. what's the impact right now? >> reporter: it wasn't that long ago we were up here in the santa cruz mountains in much different conditions, covering the loma fire, a fire that left the landscape pretty fragile to take on a storm. norman noble spent the past week focused on cleanup and repair after the loma fire destroyed his shed and scorched his property. today with the rain picking up, he is digging up soil, diverting water away from the road and his land. >> so i'm digging out a ditch to direct the water, and putting

the dirt that i dig out on the downhill side to mound it up. >> reporter: to divert the water from doing what? >> from causing serious erosion close to the road. >> reporter: the wind slowly picked up strength all day, and in some areas, the wind became a force to worry about, especially when it combines with the rain. >> the wind, you've just got to watch out. there is going to be a lot of trees falling if it rains real hard and the wind comes. it's going to be crazy. >> reporter: as usual, the rain had an immediate impact on traffic. we saw a number of fender-benders and solo spinouts, including one where the car ended up facing against traffic on a curve. the california highway patrol brush rushed in to prevent a chain reaction. >> you have to slow down, especially when it hasn't rained in a long time. there is a lot of oil and slickness on the road. it's really sad to watch people crash all of the time. >> reporter: and back live, we're seeing more and more

scenes such as this one, and we're also told that cal fire has set up a weather station loma prieta in the fire area to monitor weather conditions. pretty good timing, since as you heard rob mayeda say earlier, the storm expected to get stronger. live in los gatos, nbc bay area news. >> let's go to the east bay now, which saw the most constant rain during today's storm. ely elyce kirchner live from walnut creek. >> reporter: the rain started here around 8:00 this morning, janelle, and really didn't start letting up until about an hour ago. so for the first time in months, you're seeing something in creeks like this one, that you haven't seen for a long time. there is actually water in these creeks, but also wet weather, also caused some problems. for david, the first storm of the season came in with a bang. >> probably happened around 10:30 this morning. i heard like a loud thud. >> reporter: that thud, he says, was the sound of the power going out in his lafayette home.

>> it appears like it's on the entire block. >> reporter: crews worked to restore downed power lines at the peak of the storm more than 23,000 east bay homes were in the dark, with people in richmond and vallejo getting the worst of it. but even with the inconveniences of navigating through the wet weather, are it brought simple joy to 3-year-old sloan in orinda. >> what do you like about the rain? >> splash in the puddles! >> reporter: and in danville, homecoming festivities went on. starting inside with the voices kylie rothfield singing outside. as soaked students wouldn't let the rain stop their parade. >> you know, we're hanging in there. a lot of people wearing ponchos, trying to protect the instruments. we're going to do our best. >> reporter: and back here live, as the rain continues, you may want to be prepared and pick up

some sandbags and there are free locations where you can do that. we set up a link on our website, nbcbayarea.com, to find out those locations. live in walnut creek, elyce kirchner, nbc bay area news. >> now to the traffic. it's always problematic when a storm hits. kim yonenaka joins us from sausalito. 101 a mess throughout the day. kim, how is it looking tonight? >> reporter: it's going smoothly now. but like you said, what a mess earlier. before noon, there were already 30 accidents here in the north bay, due to the wet weather. the good news is, there were no serious injuries. but drivers didn't get anywhere on time. at the peak of the morning commute, drivers on 101 and san rafael could only nash their teeth after the county's biggest freeway was cut down to just one lane in each direction. the problem? a produce truck that flipped,

because the driver was going too fast in the rain. >> it appears the driver began to lose control of the vehicle. when he attempted to correct that, he lost control, and subsequently collided with the center divide wall behind me. >> gridlock everywhere. yeah. i had a dental appointment this morning. i live in san rafael. and it still took me 35 minutes. >> reporter: the accident made getting anywhere in the surrounding area challenging. movie-goers raced the clock to get to the mill valley film festival in san rafael. >> i went north to highway 101 and back through fairfax to san rafael. and i made it just in time. >> reporter: with more rain in the forecast throughout the weekend, chp officers say if you want to get to your destination on time, remember to leave early and please be careful when you get out on the road. reporting live in sausalito, i'm kim yonenaka, nbc bay area news. one of the biggest areas

without electricity tonight is richmond. thousands of people throughout that area still have no power. strong winds are to blame for bringing down power lines. and a transformer fire caused the top of one pole to snap. we spoke with folks who live off of richmond parkway as they waited for the lights to go back on. >> suddenly we get a part of the scale, we can probably do something. but it looks like not right now. >> as you can imagine, the power outage is also causing big problems on the roadways. as many traffic lights are out. >> just ahead, we're going to take you to pacifica. these are live pictures, beautiful to look at. but those big waves, dangerous as they crash on to the shore. scott budman is going to join us live from the coast in about eight minutes. we also have more coverage online. a good resource as we head into a somewhat rainy weekend. our free nbc bay area app. it has weather alerts to go right to your phone. you can look at the same live radar that we use to track the weather in your neighborhood. our other headlines tonight,

gunshots in los altos hills. this prompted a shelter in place for a neighborhood and nearby elementary school. sheriffs deputies swarmed a house off 280 near foot hill college. the sheriff says this was not a random shooting. the two people knew each other. the victim was a man who was rushed to a nearby hospital. the shelter in place lasted less than an hour. now to some election news. hillary clinton today gave her first interview since sunday's debate, telling ellen degeneres donald trump seems angry at the debate after the release of that 2005 access hollywood video. >> and so he was really trying to dominate and then literally stalk me around the stage. and i would just feel this presence behind me. and i -- you know, i thought, whoa! this is really weird! >> well, mr. trump remembers the debate differently. >> she walks in front of me. you know? and when she walked in front of me, believe me, i wasn't

impressed. but she walks in front of me. and she takes a question. then she walked back and that was the end of that. no problem. then she said the next day, i invaded her space. give me a break. >> he also vehemently denies claims he made unwanted sexual advances on several women. he calls them all liars. meantime, another woman came forward today, represented by anti discrimination lawyer, gloria allred. in 2006, summer was a contestant on trump's tv show, "the apprentice." later, when she contacted him about a job, she claims he asked her to meet at a hotel. >> he tried to kiss me again with my hand still on his chest, and i said, dude, you're tripping right now. attempting to make it clear, i was not interested. >> she says trump's comments on the 2005 access hollywood video hit a nerve, prompting her to come forward. is it a hate crime?

symbols of hate scrawled in blood at a south bay university. and tonight everyone is getting a close look at that message and those who scrolled it, thanks to a leaked video from a closed circuit camera. nbc bay area's damian trujillo is at santa clara university where it occurred. >> reporter: the university would not go on camera for this report nor allow us on campus. the video we're about to show says a lot here on the campus of santa clara university. the first video shows male and female students on campus knocking down wooden silhouettes honoring a group.

they're 43 student teachers who disappeared in mexico during a protest of alleged government corruption. the second video was recorded over the weekend in an elevator on a campus dorm. it appears to show students using their own blood to draw a swastika on a poster, promoting the lgbt community. in a statement, the university says they have identified the students and they're investigating to see what kind of action to take. police tell me, they're looking into it, as well. >> pretty disappointed that somebody would do that. but again, i think pretty wild, it didn't seem like he was targeting, but very disappointing. >> reporter: in a statement, the university called the swastika incident deplorable. and investigating how the closed circuit videos were leaked. i'm damian trujillo, nbc bay area news. they left us once before in the 1980s and the raiders might

be doing it again. the team has taken another step closer to las vegas. nevada's legislature approved a plan that would use $750 million in public money to build an nfl stadium right there off the las vegas strip. the measure would raise hotel taxes in las vegas to help fund the project. nevada's governor expected to sign off on the plan on monday. but that won't make it a done deal. nfl owners must still approve the team's move. today raiders' owner mark davis issued a statement that read, in part, the project will provide a proud new home for the entire raider nation. we'll likely hear more about the team in oakland as the mayor, libby shaf, during her state of the city address tonight in a half hour. she is also expected to address the sex abuse scandal involving oakland police. back to our stormy weather now and one of the biggest trouble spots last year, pacifica. nbc bay area's scott budman is there live, checking out the

high surf and high winds. scott, any new damage? >> reporter: no, janelle. no new damage today. just mostly people that live here happy to see the rain coming back. although the mayor came out just to keep an eye on things. the waves were big all day in had pacifica. drawing surfers and families on the first stormy day of the season. >> pretty surprised. i like the rain, so i was happy. >> lots of waves. lots of waves. it's still warm out here, though, which is great. but it's great to see the weather. >> reporter: going to get out and do a little surfing? >> definitely not. >> reporter: but plenty of people did, enjoying the waves, even as wary pacifica officials kept a look out for any damage. >> we have to worry a great deal about our city infrastructure, for one thing and the safe and health of our citizens. >> reporter: and, again, no new damage along the pier, but

officials will keep an eye on things the next couple days as the wind is expected to pick up. scott budman, nbc bay area news. >> thanks, scott. today's rain is helping crews battle a fire in south lake tahoe. the emerald fire started overnight. so far, it's burned about 200 acres. fire officials say winds are fueling the blaze, which is moving toward the lake. fortunately, the rain is containing it from spreading too quickly. 500 people evacuated near cascade lake. the fire is 25% contained. no word on what started it. we've been tracking all of this rain and wind throughout the day and into the weekend. rob mayeda, anything surprising? >> the snow levels for one thing. way up at 9 to 10,000 feet. rain around the fire at lake tahoe, which is good news, but the winds extremely strong. it's not chain control you have to be worried about, but wind gusts near the summit. 90 to 100 miles per hour. or higher. along interstate 80, you'll see gusts at 65 miles per hour. not until we get to monday, where some cool air finally

comes in and bring the snow levels down into the sierra. most of the rain focused south of san francisco and south of the tri valley. and look at the numbers outside. rain and numbers in the mid to upper 60s around the bay area. rain totals around the peninsula almost three quarters of an inch of rain. and on the ocean-facing side of the santa cruz mountains, about 1 to 2 inches of rain. but then what happened here in san jose? not much rain. this is our rain shadow effect where the moisture is forced to rain out on the santa cruz facing sides of the mountain. and as the air descends and dries, the rain totals drop off. then the air is forced to rides up again and you see the numbers go upward again. orinda, a third of an inch of rain. some spots in the east bay hills, more than an inch of rain and counting. specifically, that's where the sign -- storm ranger for you this evening, looking at the

season old rain commute. as we get a clearing line west of san francisco, and this is going to be the story tonight, some hit and miss showers for tonight before the rain picks up in intensity, heading into late tomorrow, courtesy of this storm taking shape just over my shoulder. so the trend at least next 12 hours, looks like a little bit less rain as we head towards tomorrow morning. as you see, not much happening. by 5:30, rain moves out of the north bay on saturday into the south bay for saturday night and into sunday morning. where it may linger for a while. we could see that rain sticking around at least into the first half of sunday morning. so tomorrow's high still pretty mild. increasing clouds. numbers in the 70s around the south bay. upper 60s for san francisco. and around the north bay as early as mid afternoon, you see the next round of sustained heavy rains dropping from north to south as we head into saturday evening. so now the second half of the weekend forecast, notice saturday night into sunday. look how the rain just kind of hangs up over the santa cruz mountains. if it does that, some places could get another 2 to 3 inches

of rain, especially around the loma fire burn area. that might be some place to watch from sunday morning until midday. as we head into sunday afternoon and monday, scattered showers as the pattern slowly begins to shut down as we head into monday morning. so the rainfall projections here, as we add everything up from sunday into monday, very impressive. many spots eclipsing the monthly average in just the three-day span of today through sunday. we could see another inch of rain in the north bay and maybe another quarter inch to half inch in the south bay. so napa, the safeway open. it looks gusty through sunday. showers following us as we head into monday. and around half moon bay this weekend, plan on rough surf, breezy conditions and highs in the low 60s. very interesting that the seven-day forecast completely reverses the trend as we head through the week. we've got the showers to begin the week and strong high pressure makes a comeback. while the rain has been nice, it looks like it will be out of here starting next monday and then mid 80s.

a typical fall-like seven-day forecast with not typical, though, adding up 1 to 3 inches of rain. monthly rainfall averages being broken in two days time, thanks to these storms. >> the radar working behind you, also. thanks, rob. still ahead at 5:00, the new charges filed today in that brutal attack of a sikh man in the east bay.

a sikh man who was brutally attacked in richmond last month,

today hate crime charges were officially filed against two men. prosecutors charged chat little and colton leblanc with felony assault. both men are from texas and were working at the richmond refinery. the september attack left the sikh with sheard hair, nerve damage, broken teeth and a finger cut so badly it will have to be amputated. he was assaulted in his car near hilltop mall. he claims the men removed his turban so theyca cut his hair. a statement says, quote, these hate crime charges ensure that the bias-based nature of the assault will be addressed during thes were accuse. samsung shares climbed for the first time in four days. the stock fell sharply following its decision to permanently end sales of the galaxy note 7 sfoens in the wake of several battery fires. samsung is expected to take a hit to its operating profit, about $3 billion over the next

two quarters because of its decision. one of the biggest events in the bay area this weekend had to come to a stop today. we'll explain and show you, next.
