new video tonight of the volcano erupting in hawaii. the lava continues to spew, threatening neighborhoods. tonight that lava is splashing onto local streets as dozens leave their homes. >> you can see the structures and homes below. more than 24 hours of this hot and dangerous mess. to make matters worse, the earthquakes continue, which triggers the lava flow on the big island. nbc bay area's ian cull joins us with the latest. >> reporter: scientists say this eruption could last for days or

weeks. while the movement of the lava appears to be slow, authorities say the people living nearby need to leave because the volcano is also releasing toxic gas. tonight cracks in the side of a hawaii volcano are growing, spewing out lava, even pulsing at times, splattering into forests and onto streets. two homes have been significantly damaged, and there are now at least six fissures on the east side of hawaii's big island. emergency responders frantically evacuating more than 1,700 people. this instagram video shows the burning bits of earth flung into the air along with ash and toxic gas. the volcanic activity paired with a magnitude 6.9 earthquake today jolting this home and family, shaking entire grocery stores. dozens of aftershocks have hit as of late tonight. >> we're expecting there were going to be changes. >> reporter: this family just arrived in san jose tonight

newsroom, a fire burning in antioch. you can tell from this picture. firefighters have their work cut out for them. not only protecting the land but boats as well. the fire sparked near the antioch marina. we don't know much else other than it broke out sometime before 8:00. the cause of this fire is unknown at this time. a man who targets women near the uc berkeley campus may be off the streets tonight. take a look. you can see a woman here fighting off this attacker near campus. she says he had a gun and tried to assault her, but she was able to break free and get away. police think they have their man. alfonso mckinnis, seen here, is accused of another crime as well. just two weeks ago, a teenage girl was walking near cal when she says a man grabbed her, held a gun to her head, and assaulted her in a nearby yard. robocalls in mandarin are flooding the bay area. it is deceptive because the calls usually come from a local area code. these calls are aimed at scamming people out of money.

jean elle has more. jean? >> reporter: people here in chinatown and all over the bay area are getting these calls. sometimes daily. the robocall is impersonating the chinese consulate, demanding credit card information or a bank transfer. robocalls in mandarin are lighting up cell phones across the bay area. >> usually it's in the morning, 9:00. sometimes i'm still sleeping, and it's also ways so annoying. >> reporter: the calls are more than annoying. they're a scam. >> you have a package delivered to the embassy. >> reporter: the robocall is impersonating the chinese consulate, telling mandarin speakers to get the package, they must provide credit card information or other personal information, a trick some fall for. >> no one should be asking for

your credit card information over the phone. >> reporter: the district attorney's office and the police department are reaching out to the asian community, warning people not to become a victim. >> it's going to be almost impossible to get your money back once you've sent it to a foreign country. >> reporter: the federal trade commission even issued a warning saying it's happening across the country, urging people to hang up and report it. scammers make it hard to screen the calls because the caller i.d. number is often local. but really the scammer is falsifying the information sent to your phone. it's called spoofing. some businesses are getting so many callbacks, they've recorded a message for victims who are calling with a message of their own. >> hey, stop calling me. >> reporter: the district attorney's office is doing a lot of community outreach with the asian-american community, including handing out these fans with warnings and contact information, hoping education will help prevent people from

becoming victims. reporting live in san francisco, jean elle, nbc bay area news. >> thank you. i get those calls about once a week. a disgruntled tenant shot his landlord. we're getting a clearer picture about yesterday's shooting. 71-year-old victor lugo, who was living in that apartment complex, shot the landlord and the landlord's daughter because of a pending eviction. lugo then turned the gun on himself. 30-year-old sabrina liu, her father, 84-year-old leonard, remains in intensive care but is expected to survive. >> busted for stealing an officer's gun and badge and not just any officer. it was the gilroy police chief's. louis grew beck jr. is accused of stealing a truck in modesto while the chief was in town to attend a graduation. the chief admits he violated the law passed in 2016 that requires police to lock up their gones in

an unattended vehicle. >> i have to make sure whatever the consequences for me is going to be consistent with whatever it would be for somebody else in the future. otherwise i have no credibility. >> the chief tells us he got the truck back, but everything in the truck is gone, including that gun. a chef out of lafayette is accused of doing something criminal outside the kitchen, robbing a bank. it happened at a citibank in orinda on wednesday morning. valentino luchin made off with about $18,000. he used to be the owner and executive chef at ottavio in walnut creek. police say someone caught a glimpse of luchin's license plate as he drove away and that's how police tracked him down. new at 11:00, not in my backyard. a new facility to help young girls recover from sex trafficking is getting a cold shoulder from its neighbors. some of these girls are as young as 12 years old. our reporters joins us from the oakland hills where the neighbors are putting up a

fight. tom? >> reporter: one of the reasons they don't want it here is because it's so close to this school. a classic case of not in my backyard. neighbors say they shouldn't be judged too harshly. >> the neighbors right now are really unhappy with how this got rolled out. >> reporter: suzette and william say they just want to protect children in their neighborhood. >> now we're being vilified as if we are somehow wrong for being concerned about our own children. >> reporter: the two are upset about this. a new facility set to open in the coming weeks. it will be home and a therapy center for 12 girls between the ages of 12 and 17, all victims of sex trafficking. it's called claire's house, and it's journaliust a couple hundr from a school. >> our children go to that school. we have two daughters, 6 and 9 years old. i can imagine them wanting to know who lives over there. >> so many questions have not been answered, and i feel that it is reckless. >> reporter: neighbors met to

>> good evening, guys. we hear about auto repair disasters all the time, but this particular case stood out as soon as it came in to our team. this case here involves a person who just wanted to take their car in for simple repairs, but it turns out the mechanic took unnecessary risks with his car. >> i mean the car is meant to be a fun car. >> reporter: jeff chatterton's dodge challenger is a fun ride. >> it's a great car. >> reporter: the tag literally spells it out. >> the license plate says joyrider. >> reporter: jeff says a mechanic recently took that as a invitation. he says this dealer worked on the differential and the radio. when jeff picked up his car, he found it had been driven 20 miles. >> i thought that seemed pretty excessive for something i described as something you could reproduce in a parking lot. >> he looked at his trip computer and it showed two test

drives plus a disturbing new top speed. >> 114 miles an hour and the g force meters pegged out in pretty much every direction. >> reporter: california's speed limit varies. >> 55 miles per hour. 25 miles per hour. 65 miles per hour. >> reporter: but 114? >> nowhere within the state at 114 miles per hour. >> reporter: puzzled, jeff turned to his dash cam, which automatically records at startup. it got one test drive where the car goes the wrong way on stephens creek boulevard. the 114-mile-an-hour test drive was missing. >> before they even pulled out of the parking lot, they made sure to disconnect the dash cam. >> reporter: jeff confronted the dealer but wasn't satisfied they were taking him seriously. that went on for weeks. >> never got an apology. >> reporter: jeff wanted accountability, so he contacted us. we notice the his invoice has an entry for the mekennic's license number, so we contacted the state to look it up. but -- >> the mechanics themselves are not registered. >> reporter: california licenses dozens of professionals,

including doctors, barbers, boxers, and even furniture up holsterers, but the state does not license auto mechanics. the national institute for automotive excellence told united states only two states and a couple florida counties license individual mechanics. in california, repair shops are licensed. >> we would license and register the repair dealer, and they're responsible for the actions of their employees. >> reporter: we contacts stephens creek dodge. it acknowledged the joyride but declined to discuss it on camera. the dealer then said it suspended jeff's mechanic without pay for three days. if jeff is unhappy with that outcome, he can file a complaint with the state, joining about 15,000 others who speak up each year about auto repairs gone wrong. >> we use consumer complaints to help monitor a shop's business practices. >> reporter: jeff is mulling a complaint, but he's sure of one thing. he'll decline a loaner car the next time his joyrider is in the shop. >> i think i'll sit in the

>> i know a lot of folks across the bay area are suffering from a lot of pollen floating around right now. it's pine, oak, and walnut trees. we'll see a little bit of relief tomorrow with the possibility of some drizzle. that's coming from this system out here offshore. this does look pretty potent, but by all accounts, any kind of rainfall with this would be heading off to the north. for us, we're primarily looking at some clouds that will be moving in. that's going to be a big, big change for us. as we hit your saturday, i know it's your weekend. we had beautiful weather today, but it's how things are laying out for us. tomorrow morning's forecast, you can see the cloud cover that will be in place from the south bay over to the tri-valley. temperatures in the low 50s. more widespread overcast for the east bay, san francisco, and the north bay with potentially some drizzle right there in san francisco and 50 to start. let's give you more of that top-down view of our hour by hour forecast. 7:00 tomorrow morning, here's the cloud cover we've been talking about. pretty extensive for the bay

area. also expensive to live here. it kind of came out there. as we head through the afternoon, you'll see once we hit 1:00, the big change in tomorrow is that widespread cloud cover. that will stay in place. we may get a little bit of sunshine poking out once we hit about 5:30 in the afternoon. so any kind of late barbecue you have up here in the north bay down to about san francisco, you might get some sun rays then. but overall, cooling temperatures coming our way for tomorrow with that cloud cover on the increase. that's going to put us in the south bay at 74 here in san jose. a little milder for morgan hill and gilroy. still overall a decrease in temperatures tomorrow by about four to seven degrees. 76 in concord. 77 in antioch. 73 in fremont. dropping in oakland down to 64 degrees. for the peninsula, 70 in redwood city. heading to san francisco, winds will be kicking up out of the west at 16 miles per hour. gusting in the low 20s. it's going to feel chilly right along the embarcadero. napa and sonoma, temperatures in

a renowned rock climber is recovering in the hospital tonight after falling off yosemite's el capitan high up there. he didn't fall off, but he was high up there hiking. hans florine had been climbing for more than seven hours yesterday afternoon when he fell 23 feet, plun rgeged over and c to a stop. park rangers say it happened too late in the day to rescue him so he had to spend the night on the rock. >> the initial injury can be bad, but not getting treatment immediately can be really debt rhyt detrimental. >> he broke bones in his left ankle and right heel.

a minivan belonging to way mo. in happened in the phoenix suburb of chandler today. investigators say a car swerved across and hit the mini man. this is the second self-driving car crash in the phoenix area in the past two months. way mo released a statement reading our team's mission is to make our roads safer. we are concerned about the well being and safety of our test driver and wish her a full recovery. not just hockey, but also politics. the sharks are filing a lawsuit against the planned bart extension into downtown san jose. the team is worried about events at the sap center being disrupted by the construction of an underground bart tunnel. they're also concerned about fans losing parking access when bart's station in built. the lawsuit names the bta, which is doing the heavy lifting on both the tunnel and the new train station. vta is not commenting. i had a bad dream that the
