>> melissa has been tweeting updates from the scene all day. who's got the power? >> that is the chant along the picket lines of ucsf medical center. it's some of the thousands of hospital workers who hit the picket lines today. nbc bay area's mark matthew is live with what the strike means for patients there. >> reporter: i think the hospital and strikers will tell you it hasn't affected patient care. some of the picketers are still out here. you can see them behind me. the picketers who numbered in the hundreds today, down to less than half that number. the strikers and the hospital have taken steps to preserve the level of service to patients. as the strikers marched for a

10% pay hike over the next five years and the right to protect their jobs from outsourcing. 12,000 patient appointments were postponed. those who couldn't be postponed told me their procedures went off without a hitch. >> it was fine. >> reporter: his brother is recovering from a kidney transplant. >> he's in recovery, so it's fine. >> reporter: any of this concern new. >> no. i'm a retired afsmce member. >> reporter: union workers say they want limits on how many of their jobs can be outsourced to labor contractor. they hope both sides get back to the bargaining table but today went as smoothly as expected.

>> we had an overabundance of staff. some staff worked in other areas, some went home and so we are now preparing for tomorrow. >> reporter: tomorrow, 900 nurses will join the 1,000 or so strikers here in the bay area. the nurses walking out in sympathy with the service workers. also today, kamala harris passed up an opportunity to give a commencement address at berkeley. >> the union analyzed information about the lowest paid workers that it requested from university of california. it found women and people of color are paid less than their male and white coworkers. latinos earn 21% less than white

workers and black workerers earn 20% less than white. and women started at $2 less an hour of men. first charges of domestic violence now charges of animal cruel cruelty. new charges against reuben foster. there have been some details that have not been made public back in the incident of february. elissa ennice told police that during an argument, foster threw her dog across the room. the dog was not hurt. ennice also told police foster hit her hard, but not that hard, an 8 on a scale of 1 to 10. and now she has reversed her story saying foster never hit

her. the 49ers have suspended him from all team activities until this case is resolved. strange circumstances led to an officer involved shooting in san jose. a police officer shot at a suspect after that suspect allegedly refused to put down a handgun. they were chasing two home invasion robbery suspects when one of the suspects tried to hide in a 55 gallon drum filled with lard. when he got out and refused to put down his gun, the officer fired at him. no one was hurt, though. and the suspect gave up. >> it's not something we train for at the academy, to apprehend someone covered in lard. we are on the eve of a pivotal night here in california in terms of politics.

tomorrow the candidates for governor square off here in the bay area. about 700 people are expected to go inside to see the top six candidates debate on nbc bay area. this will be televised live statewide on nbc. you can see six podiums set up there on the stage. gavin newsom, the lieutenant governor has agreed to do this debate. this is the only debate he agreed to do before the june primary. he is leading in the poles. >> we are setting up the stage for the candidates and panelists as well as the entire theatre. weer taking over the entire space. every room is being filled. >> a drawing was held to determine where each of the candidates will be standing. other local and state leaders will be in attendance, as well as voters who received a ticket through a lottery system.

they have been set the stage all day. there's time lapse. the june election is a few weeks ago. the top two vote getters in june advance to the november election. for many of the voters this is week one just now getting our ballots. what's the takeaway here? what do people have to gain or lose from the election? >> reporter: that is right, a lot of people don't get into this kind of primary race until the last few weeks before the june 5th primary. this is the dry run, obviously those are not the actual candidates. 650 people are going to be in the california theatre for this tomorrow night. the top six candidates will be standing behind me to the left. that's where chuck today d is gg to be moderating. and, of course, this race is going to focus on california's

while children will be send to another detention center. a lawsuit was filed in february to challenge this practice. looming this week for president trump an expected anountment on the iran nuclear deal. he tweeted he'll announce his decision tomorrow. the sanctions were lifted in exchange for iran limiting its nuclear program. president trump has blasted the deal since he was a candidate however u.s. allies are urging the president to amend the deal if he must but not pull out completely. still to come at 5:00, a delivery driver caught on camera dump%ñ%uing garbage in a south neighborhood. how a stolen van ended up careening inside this home.

investigators say she was speeding and lost control while trying to take concerns. no one inside the house was hurt. >> i was out front in my yard and heard a large bang, crash, and i'm like that's not normal. so i thought i'd come see what it was. >> houses on barnard drive in fremont. it's a problem in virtually every community in the bay area. san jose is starting to hand out stiff fines when they find people dumping trash on the street. we're live. >> reporter: a lot of people said they shook their heads in disbelief when san jose vowed to crack down on illegal dumping but it has shown results. now the city wants to do more because as you'll see apparently some bumpers couldn't careless.

you don't often catch someone dumping in the neighborhood. this man was caught this past week on camera throwing out trash near the home in san jose. the homeowner said it's a food delivery worker and some of the trash was old food that did not and will not be delivered. the homeowners said for those that don't think it's a big deal. >> are you going to dump it in front of your house? no. you're treating my house and neighborhood as a garbage can. >> reporter: we're told the man in the video will be cited and fined 2,500. the city is promoting junk endorsement. >> the more we talk about it the more the message will get out. we need everybody's help in getting that information out. >> it's an ongoing, almost a daily occurrence where people

through 6:00 and 7:00 tonight and 60s as we head through 8:00, 9:00 and 10:00. all this warm air brought us well above average. we should be at 74 this time of year. livermoore at 81. i do see a change in the faefs tomorrow. high pressure with the warm air is going to start to fade a little bit. the jet stream, all of a sudden high clouds move closer to the bay area, so cooler and a little bit of cloud cover. let's look for tuesday morning. patchy clouds across the bay. also starting with 54 in the east bay, san francisco 52 and the north bay at 51. let's look at that fast for tomorrow. overall i think temperatures will be dropping off about 4 to 7 degrees. it'll be noticeable but still an

amazing day as we look at the may temperatures. 77 in san jose, still warm in morgan hill and gilroy in the low 80s. isolated across contra costa, alameda county, 84 in antioch, concord at 81, danville at 80. and cooler by the bay, down to 68 in oakland. 72 in redwood city and 69 in san mateo. 60s across the board in san francisco. when the wind kicks up, it's going to feel like the upper 50s and marine, napa, 79 in santa rosa and 77 in sonoma. the good news, pollen dropping a little bit, oak and walnut trees in the moderate categories grasses and molds in the low.

saturd a bizarre crime in the south bay, involving kfc. a man was driving near 14th and santa cla a street when another man jumped in his car and ordered him to drive to kfc in mountain view. police say this is the suspect. alberto ullua-abila. they said when they got to the kfc he tried to rob the driver. police say alberto ullua-abila got in the driver's seat and chased the driver. he's now facing kidnapping and other charges. a senior ball eastbounded o sour note. police say dozens of cars were broken into at this car lot. >> it was a fun evening but ended in unfortunate disappointment for the students
