[ cheers and applause ] it's that day every year when moms say, "what's that burning smell?" and dad's like, "you know what, honey? let's go out for breakfast." [ laughter ] i saw that the average person spends $180 for mother's day.

[ audience oohs ] you can tell they're rich, because when you ask siri to set an alarm, she goes, "i don't do that stuff anymore." [ laughter and applause ] and finally, in poland yesterday, a truck carrying liquid chocolate overturned on the highway and spilled all over the road. when police arrived at the scene, they were like, "dear god, please let that be chocolate." are, how much they do for us every day. what i'm trying to say is moms are the best. that is why i wrote a book called "everything is mama." and this is it right here. i told this story before -- i used to go to the game all the time, and i got pretty good seats. right behind home plate. i was there with -- and i'd watch all the -- jeter would come out, and he's like, "how you doing?" [ light laughter ] you know. he'd say, "what's up? hey, jimmy." and a-rod would come out and he'd stare at me. [ laughter ] then he would get -- he'd take his bat and he'd go -- [ laughter ] >> steve: really? >> jimmy: yeah! and then he'd hit like a grand slam or something. [ light laughter ] basically owes me his whole career. [ laughter ] i guess anything's possible. but they gutted the whole theater, it's like a big magic show as well. it's not a musical, it's a a full-on play. and then it's a two-hour break, and then they do another two hours. it's a big thing. the guy's probably going to be exhausted. >> steve: yeah. i want to talk about your one of a thousand jobs that you have now. because you're fantastic, by the way. >> thank you. >> jimmy: i love that you're a a great commentator. you're on fox, and you're also on espn. how did you pull that one off? >> i have no idea. john rosen, my agent, had to do that. >> jimmy: yeah. >> i was not optimistic when the idea came to me, but i'm thankful to obviously disney, the family, and also fox for allowing me to. but the game is just in a a tremendous place. and great young players. a few things, i mean, we just finished coming back from mexico city. dodgers/padres. we've been in japan for several decades. and now, it just got announced the team is going to london. yankees and red sox in late june next year. i cannot wait. >> jimmy: in england? family. >> yeah, yeah. so i'm an advisor to hal steinbrenner, our general partner, and also, brian cashman. and i love being involved with these young men. i mean, it's starting to remind me of 1998, when they broke the all-time record for wins. >> jimmy: right. >> and, of course, they went on to win the world series. they did something that the '98 team wasn't able to do. they won about 18 out of 19. >> jimmy: that's crazy. >> it's just phenomenal and the fans are so excited. there's such a buzz in the city. it's awesome. >> jimmy: yeah. i go to the games all the time. >> good time to be a yankee. >> yeah, yeah, yeah. >> jimmy: our next guest was recently nominated for a tony for his role as harry potter in the broadway play, "harry potter and the cursed child: parts one and two," which is now playing at the lyric theatre. everyone, please welcome jamie parker. ♪ [ cheers and applause ] ♪ >> jimmy: welcome. jamie, welcome to the show. >> thank you, this is vivid. [ light laughter ] >> jimmy: vivid? >> this is like new ground for me, so -- >> jimmy: it is -- yeah. >> yeah, yeah. >> jimmy: you've never done a a late night talk show? >> no, i'm astonished to be here, thanks for having me. >> jimmy: are you kidding me, come on, i'm so psyched that you're here. [ cheers and applause ] please, we love you, thank you. and obviously you're very, very busy. i mean, let's talk about this, how long -- how long is this

whole thing? 'cause you have -- you do -- >> it's not eight hours. >> jimmy: it's not? >> i just want -- >> jimmy: it's not. >> there's another two part play on the -- >> jimmy: yeah, but that's not -- >> that's not this one. now i mean like, so there's two plays. two acts in each play and every time you sit down, it's within shouting distance of an hour before you get a break. >> jimmy: oh, okay. >> so you add it all together -- >> jimmy: same actors in both -- >> yeah, yeah, yeah. yeah. and it's -- so you add it all together it's about five -- five and a bit hours or something like that. >> jimmy: that's a lot of work for you. don't you think? >> it's a lot of clattering around, yeah. [ light laughter ] >> jimmy: yeah, but i heard they had to like gut the whole theatre -- >> yes. >> jimmy: 'cause there's all sorts of special magic things like -- >> it's amazing -- it's huge, the lyric theatre is huge and they had really, really big shows in there before and they've actually made it smaller. and they've built a new theatre inside the old theatre, so like -- >> jimmy: wow. >> the back wall of the auditorium is now the corridor outside the auditorium and it's stunning. >> jimmy: really? >> it's really, really beautiful. it was designed by the set designers so the whole world of the play comes out into the house and it starts as soon as

you come off the -- off the street into the house -- >> jimmy: really? >> there's a room with patronuses and stuff. and it's really, really beautiful. >> jimmy: is there pressure to play harry potter? i mean, do you go like -- 'cause there's so many fans out there, that -- >> it does -- it's all right. [ laughter ] he would never do that! harry wouldn't do that. did you know that they're amazingly generous? they really are. like the -- you can go a bit mad with the iconic thing -- >> jimmy: yeah, that's true. >> -- pretty quickly. you just have to get on with your job. and the thing is if you want to do good material and if you're lucky enough to get a chance to do it, then chances are you're probably gonna -- somebody pretty nifty will have been there before you. like, in britain anyone who's done a main part in a a shakespeare play, which is quite a lot of people in britain. [ laughter ] you know, they have to kind of make piece with the fact that laurence olivier or someone has been there before. >> jimmy: oh, yeah. >> you know? when i got the job on "cursed child" i was doing another show in the west end and i was playing a part that marlon brando had played and like, i'm not marlon brando. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: that's a lot of pressure there -- >> nothing -- nothing -- >> jimmy: did you talk to j.k. rowling? >> yeah, she's -- she's been --

she's been involved with it, but -- is that a gasp? >> jimmy: yeah. [ laughter ] >> this is the whole world of this production is just -- releases information and hearing an audience going, "huuuuh?" >> jimmy: yeah, no -- [ laughter ] >> it happens all the time. >> jimmy: it does. >> it's lovely. >> jimmy: what -- i know they have like pins at the show that they keep the secrets -- >> keep the secrets, big time, yeah. >> jimmy: keep the secrets. so no one can talk about what actually happens in the play? >> yeah, i mean, i think it's just -- it's just -- >> jimmy: spoiler. >> it is just the spoiler thing, but it's also -- it's just like deliberate act of unkindness really as they come out -- when people hold this so -- you know, they've cherished it since they were children. they've waited for 20 years -- >> jimmy: yeah. >> and they turn up and saved a a lot of money and flown halfway around the world from wherever and they come and somebody says, "oh, no --" and then you're like -- [ light laughter ] >> jimmy: yeah, oh, yeah, i don't want to know what happens. has daniel radcliffe come to see it yet? >> he hasn't been in. >> jimmy: no. >> i mean, we sort of -- we're trading -- we're trading bunches of flowers at the moment whenever like he opens at a play or when i'm opening or something -- we're sort of outdoing each other with good will. >> jimmy: the two men who played harry potter are sending flowers to each other?

[ laughter and applause ] >> not the most english thing you've ever heard. >> jimmy: it's very english. >> yeah. but i mean i met him ages ago before -- before this whole "harry potter" thing kind of kicked -- >> jimmy: oh, really? >> not before he was harry potter, that would have been really young. >> jimmy: yeah. [ laughter ] >> but -- no, he's lovely and classy. but i mean why -- i understand why he might be a bit circumspect about sitting in a a confined space with 1600 potter heads. [ laughter ] for five hours. >> jimmy: we can go to a a disguise or something. >> yeah. >> jimmy: or an invisibility cloak. >> yeah? i'll have a chat with the designers. >> jimmy: yeah, exactly, yeah. do you ever get any time off? when's your day off? >> we get mondays and tuesdays off which is great. we're starting to get our time back a bit now. >> jimmy: what do you do -- what do you do for those -- >> try not to -- well -- [ laughter ] i noticed you've got mr. rodriguez here today and we've started doing the broadway softball league. >> jimmy: oh, really? >> yeah, so we've got -- i've got a shout out for the fizzing whizzbees. [ laughter ]

yeah, that's the name of our team. half of whom are british and don't actually know the rules of softball. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: you don't, right? you have cricket, right? >> yeah, exactly, so like i was thrown on as pitcher for -- no, i know, like underarm is hard. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: no, it really is. >> really hard! >> jimmy: yeah. >> and it's like miles away and you're trying to throw into a a really small window and i'm used to like trying to ball just outside -- and it's just, it's not a thing over here. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: no. alex actually wanted me to give you a bat. >> what the -- what the hell is that? >> jimmy: he got a bat for you. [ cheers and applause ] and he signed it. but -- >> that's amazing. >> jimmy: it says, "wingardium leviosa." [ laughter ] >> yes, "leviosa." wingardium leviosa. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: that's exactly how to pronounce it, yes. you can make things fly with that bat. [ applause ] >> that's amazing. that's amazing. oh, thank you. >> jimmy: yeah. there's a lot of -- there's a a lot of magic in the show. >> yeah. >> jimmy: we can say that. like what can we say about the show? what is "harry potter and the cursed child?"

>> well, it's a story about wizards. >> jimmy: yeah. >> so those who know the books know that the last book finished 19 years later. harry, ron, hermione and ginny and draco, they're all grown up. they're all married -- not to each other of the five. that would be weird. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: yeah, yeah, yeah. >> and they've got their own kids and they're packing off to hogwarts. so most of our audience are original generation potter heads and they're coming into -- they're in the same passage of life their parents are. you know, going through the whole thing and they've got a a new generation of fans and people discovering this world through the eyes of the next generation. >> jimmy: do you have kids? >> yeah. >> jimmy: you do? >> we've got one boy, he's seven. >> jimmy: seven years old, can he read the "harry potter" books at seven? >> yeah, well, we -- when we were in rehearsals, we'd kind of disappear into a room for 100 days, so they stayed in the uk just for that patch. and when we were trying to figure out how to keep in touch, i'd have a little routine in the morning where i'd have breakfast and then i'd record about 15/20 minutes worth of the books. [ audience aws ] on a voice memo. and then he'd listen to it as a a bedtime story.

>> jimmy: aw. >> so we got through -- >> jimmy: now imagine that. going through a teddy bear. [ cheers and applause ] that's a good -- that's like a a genius -- a genius idea. >> yeah, yeah, yeah. the teddy bear that looks like harry potter. >> jimmy: yeah, yeah, yeah. yeah, exactly. so you kind of are reading it. that's pretty cool that you're reading it to. >> yeah, we got through all of "azkaban" that way and then we came up -- i think it was when i first got the job, i didn't know that much about -- like i sort of knew -- you can't not know about harry potter. >> jimmy: it's our culture, yeah. >> yeah, i've gone full geek since getting the job. >> jimmy: really? >> yeah. >> jimmy: really? >> like sixth time through all the books. >> jimmy: oh really? >> yeah and now i'm kind of like -- >> jimmy: you got into it? but how 'bout -- how are you with magic? >> magic? [ laughter ] >> jimmy: have you learned any? >> you've had david blaine over there like pulling hedgehogs out of his eyes and stuff. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: yeah, no, that was -- >> yeah. >> jimmy: did you see that? >> yes, i saw that. >> jimmy: i sewed his mouth shut. >> that makes no sense to me at all. >> jimmy: no, it makes no sense and questlove went and threw up. [ laughter ] he left and -- he got physically sick -- he got physically ill. david blaine is -- but dude, you've must have picked up something, i guess.

>> well, on the first day -- they taught us -- jamie harrison who designs the amazing illusions. he -- we all sit in a circle and he taught us the coin trick. you know, the sort of -- and then you take it behind the kid's ear and -- >> jimmy: yeah. >> he says, everything that happens in the play basically is that -- that trick, just written on a bigger scale. so -- and we all thought, like, you know, we can do this. no problem. the first thing we did was just drop the coins and there's like a wishing well of coins down -- stuck under the revolve. so we go home and practice and then showed it to the kid and the kid's like, "oh, amazing." then afterward, it's like, "yeah, i've seen it. you know, you've got to up your game." >> jimmy: yeah. >> so i have -- it's just occurring to me that i'm about to try and do a magic trick on "the jimmy fallon" show. [ laughter ] i'm not a magician. >> jimmy: yeah. >> but -- what i do like about this one is it's got something for the kids and something for the grown ups. >> jimmy: okay. >> and it's not just one thing with a coin, you need three things. this is what we were saying, the amount of setups that you do to prep the trick before you even signal that you're going to do a trick.

so you need three things. first thing is a balloon. >> jimmy: okay. [ blows up balloon ] >> i almost passed out on national television. [ laughter ] still setting up your pieces. >> jimmy: yep. so far, great trick. >> got a balloon.
