auzerais afternoons. the crash site still a very active sa active scene right now. mary ann pfa marianne favro with the details. >> reporter: if you take a look behind me, you can see that the train hit the vehicle so hard, it is now barely recognizable. as you mentioned, this happened around 12:30 this afternoon, and witnesses say the driver of the vehicle tried to go around the train. the vta light rail train was traveling from campbell, heading northbound, when it hit the vehicle. we talked with one witness who saw the crash. >> out of the corner of my eye, i happens to see this dude turning and right when the train came, and it hit him. >> reporter: ryan stern said he saw a wheelchair fly off the back of the vehicle when the train hit it. vta says about 20 passengers were inside the light rail train. they were evaluated for injuries

but did not report any. they then got on a bus and were taken to the convention center stop. vta says because a large pole was knocked down, they will be offering a bus bridge to passengers on the winchester/mountain view line until trains are up and running. and vta also says that bus bridge will be operating tomorrow and possibly on tuesday as well while they get these trains up and running. so this will definitely impact commuters. also police are not identifying the victims at this point. reporting live in san jose, marianne favro, nbc bay area news. >> difficult scene there. thank you. we turn now to our other top story. a dangerous rescue mission set to resume in thailand. after more than two weeks trapped inside a flooded cave, the first four boys have been rescued. it took most of the day for divers to bring the four to the surface. as nbc's bill neely reports from northern thailand, so far, so good. but it's a hazardous and

painstakingly slow operation. >> reporter: this rescue operation has been suspended for the night. it will resume sometime on monday, in the next 10 to 20 hours. that's from the commander, who is already calling this a great success. in fact, he said this is our masterpiece. four boys have been rescued. they are now at the hospital receiving medical treatment. they were the first out, and we understand they may be the weakest of all the boys. it was an extraordinary operation with the divers, ten of whom were at the cave. they took one boy underneath each one of them along the two-mile passage out of that cave. at some point, the boys could also walk along a dry cave bed, but it was a perilous, dangerous operation. remember, just a couple of days ago, a thai navy diver died when he ran out of air. so for the eight boys and the

coach remaining, it's certainly not over yet. operations will resume just after daybreak. bill neely, nbc news, northern thailand. >> that daring rescue captivating people around the world. in berkeley, members of a thai bude buddhist temple with watching closely. >> reporter: there was an overwhelming sense of happiness here for those four boys who were rescued, but still obviously concern for those who are still inside that cave as folks here are glued to many types of coverage. at the thai buddhist temple in berkeley, their head monk says word of the rescue spread quickly with a big sigh of relief. >> really, a little bit happy because everyone in the world comes to help. >> reporter: the rescue captivating people across the world but also causing a lot of worry. it's a delicate and dangerous operation. >> really worried.

christie smith, nbc bay area news. >> christie, thanks very much. as we've been reporting, tesla founder elon musk has been offering any help he can for this rescue mission. musk has been very active on twitter throughout this whole process. he volunteered to send a team of drilling engineers from spacex and the boring company to thailand. one idea he threw out, building an underwater air tunnel. musk tweeted out this video earlier today of the equipment being tested. this is going on in a pool in los angeles. musk says he's going to continue to test in l.a., test that equipment to see if it is needed in the future. the cave rescue a top story on nbcbayarea.com. head to our home page for complete coverage of the rescue mission. some tense moments in an east san jose neighborhood when a fire broke out in a back wrard and quickly spread. the owner of the home where the fire started says he was outside talking to a neighbor when that neighbor noticed smoke. he started fighting the fire himself and asked someone else

to call 911. that fire spread to at least one other house before firefighters were able to put it out. there were no injuries but substantial damage to two homes. the smoke could be seen for miles. now to the latest on wildfires burning across california. for people in santa barbara county, a hopeful day. the holiday fire in goleta is mostly contained. nbc bay area's sergio quintana live in goleta. sergio, you were able to talk to people wondering if their homes were still standing. >> reporter: yeah, terry. there is a checkpoint that is still set up leading into this neighborhood. in fact, there are residents who live in that section that is still under mandatory evacuation. they have to make arrangements with the sheriff's department to come in and check on their property. at that checkpoint is where we met a pair of residents a little bit earlier today. claire nowak and her household left their home during friday night's firestorm. >> we saw sparks raining down on our backyard, so we got in the car and left.

>> this is all we have. >> reporter: i talked with them at the roadblock leading up to their neighborhood. all they have is what they're wearing so they hope to get home to get clothes and medications. have they said if it's okay? >> he said that no homes were lost on holiday hill road, on that loop. >> reporter: we offered to check on their home. it's intact, but you can see the fire came right up to their property. but some of their neighbors were not so lucky. about ten houses were destroyed, some burned to the ground. this area remained evacuated because the power company is still repairing transmission lines, and fire crews are still patrolling the area looking for hot spots. this fire event may be mostly over, but the fire season is not. it's just started. crews are spread out all across the state. >> we actually have some of our engines that are at the oregon border today battling that fire in northern california, and they were also in the santa rosa area two weeks earlier. so which have our crews up north. >> reporter: fire teams are now planning for year-round wildfires and they're asking

residents to do the same. >> this is going to happen again. it may not happen in your neighborhood this next fire, but the one after that will. it's sheer math, and your number will come up at one point. >> reporter: we just got some updated numbers on the homes that were destroyed. it is 13 homes destroyed. we also have got an estimation as to when this fire is going to be fully contained. they expect that in the next two days. reporting live in goleta, sergio quintana, nbc bay area news. >> thank you, sergio. we're also closely watching the klamathon fire burning near the oregon border. the national guard was called in late last night to help battle the flames. the fire burning in siskiyou county has killed one person and injured two firefighters, one suffering significant burns. more than 30,000 acres have burned. the flames are only 25% contained. evacuations are in effect as hundreds of home are still threatened. better news from the county fire, the one burning east of lake berryessa in napa and yolo

president's final candidates are all hand-picked by conservative groups like the heritage foundation and federalist society. >> i've never seen a president of the united states in effect make himself a puppet of outside groups. >> reporter: four conservative candidates are reportedly the finalists. brett kavanaugh, thomas hardiman, amy coney barrett, and raymond kethledge. all could potentially try to overturn roe v. wade and other precedents, but conservatives dismiss that. >> we only have a single individual on the court who has expressly said he would overturn roe. >> reporter: still no assurances from gop leaders. >> precedent is important, but press dent is not the only thing. we have had bad precedents that were reversed after decades. >> reporter: with the high court's tone possibly be setting for decades, a vote on the nominee should be delayed until after the midterm elections. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell promises a vote before that. president trump wants his nominee confirmed before the supreme court begins its next

nbc bay area responds to a gilroy man who paid for premiere seats on a long flight, but he ended up in economy class. >> consumer investigator chris chmura looked into the apparently bungled booking. >> reporter: this man planned a trip to australia. he wanted to spend the 15-hour flight in relative comfort. he booked his flight on qantas airways through the website just fly. he said he paid $3,800 for a premium economy seat. but when he checked in, he was told he was booked in regular

the northwest at 14 miles per hour. so inland you've got the 90s and upper 80s. bayside temperatures, low 70s, oakland into hayward. and cool 60s right there in san francisco and half moon bay. wind speeds, 15 to 30 miles per hour probably till about 8:00 or 9:00 tonight, and we'll probably get a little patch or two of low clouds forming on the coast pushing locally inland. through 8:30, look at those temperatures inland hanging on to the 70s. even by 11:00 tonight near antioch and brentwood, could still see temperatures in the 70s later on tonight. for the morning, patches of low clouds on the coast. mid-to-upper 50s to start the day. high temperatures tomorrow pretty much what we saw today. mid-to-upper 80s around san jose. we should see 90s south of downtown. morgan hill, gilroy the hottest spots around the bay area. tri-valley in the 90s today. similar temperatures again tomorrow. 90s inland, 70 to near 80.

peninsula temperatures in the 70s and 80s. san francisco downtown could get close to 70, but 60s as you head over to ocean beach. north bay temperatures ranging from the mid-80s to near 09 in santa rosa. we'll see another ridge of high pressure rebuild to our north and underneath that ridge we'll begin to see some moisture coming away from arizona. that could come closer to the bay area. in terms of adding up the rainfall, it doesn't look like it's going to happen. it will be staying to the east or north of us. but you may begin to notice increasing high clouds thursday into friday as our temperatures cool for the second half of the way. valley temperatures their warmest now through wednesday. stay tuned. it could get a little muggy around here thursday and friday as we get some of that tropical cloud cover coming in from the south. >> rob, thanks very much. still ahead on nbc bay area news, san francisco's civic center invaded. the new art installation catching visitors by surprise. we'll show you next.

san francisco's civic center is normally a bustling place filled with people. now it's being filled with a new type of art from across the pond. >> yeah, nbc bay area jointrodud us to the artist and what he hopes to achieve with this unique installation. >> this is very exciting indeed. >> reporter: like life, art is all about relationships. >> this is going to be absolutely brilliant. >> reporter: relationships between artists and artwork, between artwork and surroundings. >> it will marry up with the architecture perfectly, i think. >> reporter: on a recent day in san francisco's civic center plaza, london artist zach ovay was also adjusting the relationship between art and art. >> ten-foot gaps. does it feel like it's spilling too far out?

this is the artistic moment to get the relationship right. can i see nine foot between these two? >> reporter: ovay has plenty to consider. his installation of 40 sculptures is going in across from city hall, a site that's shaking up business as usual. >> let's go back to ten. this is the invisible man and the mask of blackness. as you can see, the works are based on an african piece that was much smaller. >> it's a wonderful 40-sculpture installation that speaks a lot about identity and race. >> you need to really go back and see the whole thing in relationship to the building. >> reporter: ovay is used to unique venues. he originally created these sculptures for somerset house in england. >> i like it's an army symbolically standing. >> reporter: but in the u.s., the artwork symbolizing black men with hands raised has lent itself to a different interpretation. >> people now liken this to the

right now at 5:00, we continue to follow a developing story in san jose. two people are dead after a car and vta light rail collide. witnesses tell us what they saw just moments before the crash. the news at 5:00 starts right now. welcome back. i'm vicky nguyen. >> i'm terry mcsweeney. tragedy on the light rail tracks. here's a look at where the crash happened at lincoln and auzerais avenues. it remains an active scene. a lot of questions about what happened. marianne favro joins us live with some answers. >> reporter: right now san jose investigators are looking into what led up to this crash. you can see it's very much still an active crime scene. now, right now firefighters have cut off the top portion of this vehicle, which is barely recognizable after it was hit by the light rail train. this is possible that one of the

victims still remains inside that vehicle. this all happened around 12:30 this afternoon, and witnesses say the driver of the vehicle tried to go around the train. the vta light rail train was traveling from campbell, heading northbound, when it hit the vehicle. we talked with one witness who saw the crash, and he said he saw the driver of the car turn onto the tracks. >> a wheelchair flew off. i went out there, and the car was like completely stuffed. i don't want to say it was a hoarder, but the car was completely stuffed with possessions, so perhaps the person lived in their car. >> reporter: vta says about 20 people were inside the light rail train. they were evaluated for injuries but did not report any. they got on a bus and were taken to the convention center stop downtown. vta says because a large pole was knocked down, they will be offering a bus bridge to passengers this evening on the winchester/mountain view line until trains are up and running again tomorrow.

but getting that pole upright and getting things up and running here on the tracks is going to take quite a long time. definitely all of tomorrow and possibly into tuesday. so far, san jose police have not revealed the names of the two victims. reporting live in san jose, marianne favro, nbc bay area news. >> thank you very much. vicky was just saying to me the investigative unit has dug into the risk. you can find the story that vicky did at nbcbayarea.com. terry, four out, nine to go. this is video of first responders in northern thailand taking the first of the boys out of the cave and into safety. a moment that's been two weeks in the making. the world is watching on pins and needles as expert divers prepare to help the rest of the boys and their coach navigate miles of flooded passageways and cave beds to the open air. the first four boys are now being treated at the hospital,

but the rescue operation was suspended for the night. it is expected to resume in the next few hours. eight more boys and their 25-year-old coach remain trapped. this is a painstaking and risky operation with dangers around every corner. just a few days ago, a thai navy diver died when he ran out of air. the weather as we've been talking about a major decision to start that rescue. timing is critical with more torrential rain on top. rob mayeda is here with the conditions. >> we're beginning to see some rain falling in that region. as we widen out the map, probably the most imposing thing on the radar view is super typhoon maria off to the east. it does look like it's going to curve off to the north towards taiwan and eastern china, and the rain from that system will not make things worth there in northern thailand. but here's the story. typical for this time of year. that summer monsoon pattern ramps up as we go through the next few days. increasing rain rates per hour will become more likely as we

get into tuesday and wednesday, where we could see more than a half inch of rain falling with those temperatures in the upper 80s by day, 70s at night with the rain increasing as we head towards the middle part of the week. back to you. >> the world obviously watching this rescue very closely. in berkeley, members of a thai buddhist temple are constantly monitoring the situation. nbc bay area's christie smith joins us live. >> reporter: terry, happy is the word we keep hearing today for those boys and their families. but also still deep concern for those who still need to be rescued at the thai buddhist temple here in berkeley. volunteers have been sharing information with each other and also watching coverage on their phones and through social media. the rescue, of course, captivated people around the world but also caused concern. it's a delicate operation trying to get them out of that flooded cave. while there is excitement about the success, thoughts turn to what's next. >> i have high hope for these

just in case their equipment is needed in the future. that cave rescue a top story on nbcbayarea.com. head to our home page for complete coverage of the rescue mission. you can count on us to update you with the latest developments on air and online. new at 5:00, a brush fire that broke out between pittsburg and antioch had fire crews scrambling this morning. the fire started just north of highway 4. it burned right up to a wastewater treatment plan. behind that plant, another hazardous materials facility which also posed a big risk. several commercial buildings and roads were also threatened by this fire. firefighters say it started right next to some small homeless encampments, which is becoming a dangerous trend. >> well, this is a growing problem that we're seeing as we get further and further into the fire season. there are a lot of homeless camps around our district, around the county, and we've fought several fires, five or six in the last few days, that have originated in or near

homeless camps. >> the fire burned 20 acres before firefighters were able to put it out. they stayed on the scene for several hours to make sure hot spots didn't flare up. the holiday fire down in goleta is mostly contained now, but there's still a sizeable area under mandatory evacuation for most of the day. you look at some of the destruction right there. nbc bay area's sergio quintana live in go lleta with more. >> reporter: there are quite a few residents who are trying to get up here. actually you have to make arrangements with the sheriff's department to come in and check to see if the property is okay. you can see there are quite a few homes that were unfortunately destroyed. earlier today we talked with some residents who walked into this area to see if their homes survived. we met patty driscoll and her daughter. >> they had a house that had a back house that faced our lane. both of those houses went up in flames. >> reporter: her family's home was undamaged but they have no power or natural gas and she's

neighborhood with our nbc bay area weather app. download it now on your smartphone. new details tonight in a bizarre burglary case. police say reports of a man exposing himself in east bay neighborhoods go back to last year. a pleasanton woman sent these pictures to police. she says this man came to her house last may and exposed himself. she filed a police report but the man was never arrested. officers now think this might be related to more recent incidents in pleasanton, newark, and fremont. they say a naked man has been reported disturbing five east bay neighborhoods in three weeks. last month, he broke into a fremont home and stood naked outside of a young woman's bedroom. president trump is set to appear on prime time television norm night to announce his nominee for the supreme court. justice anthony kennedy is retiring. four conservative candidates are reportedly the finalists. brett kavanaugh, thomas hardiman, amy coney barrett, and raymond kethledge. democrats and some republicans say all could try to overturn

. several moves impacting our local sports teams. yes, zaza pachulia going away. no longer a warrior. he agreed to a one-year, $2.4 million contract with the detroit pistons. he played on the warriors for the past two seasons. his departure is not a real big surprise. his playing time diminished this past season. after starting 15 playoff games a year ago, he didn't make a single start in the playoffs this year. but, zaza, thanks for everything. younger, cheaper, and hopefully better. that's the move the san francisco giants are making to their roster. this morning the team called up its most advanced outfield prospe prospect stephen dugger. he got his first major league hit. then he got his second. to make room, the giants traded outfielder austin jackson along with jason barr. in return, they're going to receive another player or cash. coming up at 6:00, our

xfinity sports desk will have more on the moves and what they mean for the warriors and the giants. a 49ers legend laid to rest at the most fitting spot. dwight clark died last month after battling als. he was 61. most famous for the catch, a touchdown catch in the 1981 nfc championship game. the goal post from that game is now at a ranch in montana that belongs to former 49ers owner eddie debartolo. now clark's ashes are buried there too. his grave is roughly the same distance away from the goal post at the spot in the end zone where he made that famous catch. >> wow. that is a wow. eddie debartolo loved his players as people, took care of them. >> family members. >> that was a golden age. all right. let's talk about golden sunshine or whatever else ties into that. >> a lot of that going around right now. you see fog free views behind us in san francisco. also out at at&t park where

quite a baseball game. all offense going on at at&t park. 65 degrees. winds out of the west at 25 keeping your temperatures in check from san francisco across the bay. comfortable, 71 degrees. around emeryville, maybe not as comfortable. walnut creek away from that marine air influence, climbing into the mid-90s earlier. still 92 degrees. if 80s are better for you, you're probably happy to see those numbers around the santa clara valley. a little bit on the dry side, even though we're not talking about triple digit heat as we're now in the driest time of the year and these late day sea breezes pick up, we'll have to watch with these still dry conditions. there you see the spread of temperatures. almost a 40-degree swing in temperatures from the coast, inner bay, to those 90s still around santa rosa, concord, and livermore. you see the winds are onshore. again, as we go through tonight, maybe a patch or two of low clouds reforming around

pacifica. tomorrow morning we begin the day with 50s. as we go hour by hour, if this looks familiar, it's almost the exact same trend we saw today. another rut of 80s to low 90s inland. but bayside and coast side temperatures staying comfortably in the 60s and 70s. san jose tomorrow, once again mid-to-upper 80s around downtown. south of downtown you'll have temperatures climbing to the mid-90s. for the tri-valley up towards concord and antioch, 90s for you. still seeing low 60s around pacifica and half moon bay. san francisco, upper 60s to near 70. can't get too warm with that west wind at 20 picking up for the afternoon. and around the north bay, highs in the 80s to low 90s. so high pressure that's been very strong in the desert southwest is going to kind of give way to another ridge of high pressure building over the top of the west coast. that's where things may get a little more interesting as that

moisture tries to stow closer to the bay area. the time will be thursday and friday. right now the futurecast doesn't bring rain our way, but it will bring clouds and more humidity coming our way thursday into friday. the changes we'll see is a slow cooling trend later this week but maybe increasing mid and high level clouds, increasing humidity around thursday and friday. so stay tuned. second half of the week, we'll see if any of those thundershowers from the sierra try to drift further west. >> i'm going to keep my eye on what you mentioned yesterday. the muggy factor. >> we're all on the same wavelength. >> it would be a good name for a band. >> muggy factor. >> rob, thank you. still ahead on nbc bay area news at 5:00, how much would you pay for a beer at a ball game in. >> let's talk about some sticker shock violents fafans are exper at&t. we'll take a look.
