joining us, i )m terry mcsweeney. the news at 5:00 starts right now. good evening, everyone, thank you for joining us. >> we begin with breaking news this evening. a rare police shooting in a normally quiet and safe contra costa county community. >> the intersection is blocked off in downtown danville as police investigating the deadly shooting. christie smith, police just held a briefing. what did we learn? >> reporter: i tell you, nearly six hours later and investigators are still on scene here in he didn't take questions, but he gave a basic outline of what led to the shooting. whatpious person in the by cottage lane before noon today. they say they located the young man they were looking for but say he took off in a car.

officers started a pursuit as they headed toward downtown. now, people who work in the area were startled in typically quiet danville and even took cover. the chief says officers got out to try and make an arrest. >> unfortunately, the driver drove his vehicle straight towards one of our officers. fearing for his life, our officer fired his weapon towards the vehicle in an attempt to get the driver to stop. the driver was struck. >> well, we saw the police fly down this road, and then moments later, we heard, likivhene duckn because we didn't know what was going on. >> reporter: now,rir did crash here where we are and police say they took life-saving measures but he was transported to the hospital and pronounced dead. police say they have invoked the officer involved shooting protocol which means that several agencies are investigating the shooting. they have not released, so far,

the victim's name. reporting live in danville, christie smith, nbc bay area news. now to a developing story that started in san jose. a supervised visit between a mother and her two children turned into an abduction. now there's an amber alert in effect for 1-year-old alexander and 11-year-old priscilla. police say the mother and two children met at a park last night. there was a child protective services worker there, supervising that visit. the social worker took the girl, the 11-year-old to the bathroom and came out to find the mother and baby boy gone. shortly after that, the girl disappeared, and if you're wondering how that happened, so are we. we're not getting any answers. the children are believed to be with the mother. the mother is 33-year-old diana. she's believed to be driving a gray 2012 mini-cooper. california license plate 6uwl251. they may be headed to colorado

springs. a troubling sight for people in the north bay, a commercial fire sent a thick plume of smoke into the air. this is in santa rosa. the fire had fully engulfed a commercial building when crews got there. the fire spread to grassy fields but firefighters say they were able to quickly control the flames at the building and in the field because of increased staffing because of dangerous conditions this weekend. >> and now to our microclimate weather coverage. there's a red flag warning, which remains in effect for parts of the north bay and the east bay. let's check in with rob mayeda. right now, we're enjoying really the warm temperatures closer to sea level around san francisco, still close t walnut creek and concord in the mid 80s right now, notice the humidity add 16% and as this red flag warning that's set into the hills, winds at 43 miles per hour, so that is the reason why we've got that microclimate

weather alert until about 6:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. still dry and gusty conditions above 1,000 feet, continuing our warm temperatures as well as we wrap up the weekend. we'll have a close look at your sunday forecast and the ten-day rainfall outlook. is there any chance of rain helping with our fire conditions here? we'll have a look at that coming up in about 12 minutes. the final election push is on from coast to coast, candidates are in a nonstop sprint to win votes in this critical midterm election. nbc's chris pollone has the very latest. >> reporter: less than three days until the midterm elections and both parties are sending out their heavy hitters to rally voters to the polls. president donald trump would stop saturday in montana and florida. the president trying to tip the balance to republicans in some tightly contested races, first taking aim at montana democratic senator john tester. >> remember this. they vote for matt rosendale

it's a vote for low taxes, low unemployment, strong borders, and montana values. >> reporter: while the president was in montana, vice president mike pence was in wisconsin. and former vice president joe biden campaigned for democrats in ohio. former president barack obama hit the trail in georgia and florida friday, leveling harsh criticism against the trump administration, a sign of how high the stakes are in the 2018 midterms. >> they promised to take on corruption. instead, they have racked up enough indictments to field a football team. >> reporter: democrats need 23 seats to control the house of representatives and 2 seats to control the senate. after 2016, neither party is taking anything for granted. nbc news, new york. in sannc dolores park today, activists marched in support of prop c at a get out the vote rally. prop c aims to help address the

homeless problem by taxing large companies. sales force chairman and co-ceo mark benioff is a high-profile supporter. he says the homeless problem is an epidemic and san francisco has no choice but to vote for c. >> there is no plan b. this is our only choice. c is for compassion, it's for care, it's for charity. it's going to take care of the homeless that we have, 7,500 homeless in san francisco, 1,200 homeless families, each with 2 children. they need proposition c. that's why i know that it's going to pass. >> house democratic lea nancy pelosi also voiced her support on the measuring. now, opponents worry that approving prop c could lead to job loss and pour money into a broken system. well, in this final push to election day, early voting centers across the bay area and the country saw increased traffic. in san mateo county, 39 voting centers open today from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. through

happened. >> reporter: those beams came down across all northbound lanes of 880. now, the good news here is that all those lanes have since reopened just before noon and also the two bridges that were being reconstructed over the freeway were not damaged in this crash. but investigators are still trying to figure out how exactly the impact from one car was able to bring down three massive steel i-beams. the crash happened just before 4:00 this morning. the chp says the hayward woman behind the wheel was speeding i structure that was being used to support the reconstruction of the 23rd avenue and 29th avenue overpasses on i-880. she suffered minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital where she was later arrested by the chp for suspicion of driving under the influence. according to caltrans, the newly reconstructed bridges were not damaged in this crash. the beams that came down were already scheduled to be removed

from the construction site. >> right now, those actually -- the bridge can stand without the beams because we were actually going to remove them so the main beams for the bridge are already in place. >> caltrans had planned to shut down the freeway later this month to remove those support beams that came down in the crash but since this massive pieces of steel were taken away today because of the crash, caltrans is figuring out if they will need to close the freeway for a shorter period of time. caltrans has also been working on reconstructing thedges for the last year. those bridges were not affected by this crash, and they will be reopening as scheduled a little bit later this month. reporting live in oakland, i'm sergio quintana, nbc bay area news. and here's a look at a second major incident on interstate 880 in less than 24 hours. a massive fire along the freeway

near mineta san jose airport shut down southbound 880 during the rush hour commute. the back-up, as you can see right there, stretched for miles, a traffic nightmare for drivers. firefighters are still investigating the cause. still ahead on nbc bay area news at 5:00. caught on camera, a teacher punching a student. the encounter lasted a full 30 seconds. we'll show you what led up to it. plus we now know what caused the fire that forced the evacuation of an east bay school. it's all coming up after the break. i'm dianne feinstein and i approve this message.

california values senator dianne feinstein to tense moments last night. we want to give you a follow-up to a fire at an east bay high school that led to tense moments last night. investigators say the cause of the fire on the roof of a high school building was electrical. it was not arson. electrical. it caused brief panic because students and parents were on campus for a music fund-raiser when that fire broke out and they had to be evacuated as a precaution. nobody hurt, damage limited to the roof of that building. now to a violent confrontation between a teacher and a student in southern california and yes, it was caught on camera. take a look at this video. the attack reportedly happened at an alternative high school near los angeles. you can hear music teacher riley warn a freshman to get out of his classroom. other students say the freshman started saying racist comments and wouldn't stop making those

comments. then, 64-year-old teacher repeatedly punches the student. >> i've seen the kid bleeding from his face. >> just the fact that he's hitting a child is not right. >> the boy was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. the teacher was arrested. witnesses say it all stemmed from an argument over the school dress code. hundreds of teenagers met at twitter san francisco headquarters today with the aim of raising awareness about mental illness. the summit was organized by bring change to mind. that's a nonprofit founded by actress glenn close. it was launched back in 2015, bring change to mind's high school program has grown to more than schools. a leader at the palo alto high helped her heal after losing h . school chapter says the program >> i had no idea he was suffering until i found out that he lost his life and that was 100% due to the stigma of mental illness and the fact that he felt ashamed by his coworkers, his doctors, just generally he

up a little bit. less of those dry, gusty winds tomorrow, so just a little bit cooler than the 70s we saw today, san jose still 80 degrees, humidity at 19% and you can see temperatures inland in the 80s, concord and livermore, mid 80s today, still near 80 in san jose tomorrow morning with mostly clear skies, 40s to low 50s so this part of the forecast feels like november. it's the afternoons and the fact that we really won't have many rain chanced ahead that's a li ujosestill near the 80s for morgan hill, tri-valley, near 8, pretty pleasant day with sunny skies, no fog expected in the morning. moving forward, tomorrow, hour-by-hour, not much in the way of fog, already rain producing clouds, staying way off to the north and yes, we're in november but the problem is, the upper air pattern and all the storms staying way off here to the north, so not only is

this pattern holding to the end of the weekend as you're about to see, the ten-day rainfall outlooks, depending on which model you look at, same idea here, not a lot for northern california. especially through about the 13th, both of those long range weather models just not bringing us any rain. we will see a little bit of cooling, though. san franci d eleion day. that weather forecast looks very pleasant, temperatures in the 70s inland for that, so no excuses weather-wise to not get out and vote there on tuesday. but the seven-day forecast and ten-day forecast still running quite dry. coming up at 6:00, we'll try to look further out, see if we can find some rain. right now, it's just not in the cards. >> you're ling a divining rod, just looking anywhere for water. >> i'm more excited for the i mean change. >> me too. we need to sleep. rob, thanks. still ahead on nbc bay area news at 5:00, a life-changing message that a woman heard inside a church. >> she calls it a bolt of
