mission district where candidate newsom will be campaigning in about two hours. >> reporter: you see the crowd starting to build behind me. gavin newsom is going to dip into the well of some of his biggest-named backers. as for john cox, he was in berkley, then he went to sacramento, now he's on his way back to san diego. so a whirl wind tour for him. as we talk about the record-breaking early voter numbers, the tidal wave is still tomorrow. they have received 113,000 votes, 24% of the voter turnout. but they are expecting turnout in the 60s. there could be a couple hundred thousand ballots still up for grabs. john cox talked about fiscal responsibility. newsom had a message of the

american dream which runs counter to what we've seen from washington recently. these stumps still carry weight. >> i think the way the numbers are tracking, if we were to get 100,000 people who voted at the polls tomorrow, this will be the highest midterm turnout since 1974. our records don't go any further back in time. >> people in california have a very good way of, first of all, rejecting the conventional wisdom and deciding for themselves that they want change. >> reporter: so that was john cox answering a question from a reporter about lagging behind newsom by double digits in a number of polls which he called, quote, rear view, not taking into account the latest data. we just got video of gaffvin newsom from he was there campaigning on behalf of a candidate.

>> reporter: that's right. marin county investigators say the suspect was in a dating relationship with one of the victims. brittany mccann. they say he was arrested in snow mako -- sonoma county. he made admissions that tied him to the crime scene. >> they're heroes, every day heroes. >> reporter: that's how those who worked at the detox facility were described. but workers at the helen vine detox center came under siege last night when a gunman took aim at three staff members, killing one and wounding two others. >> this morning at approximately 1:33 a.m., a call came out of a report of shots being fired and

staff members being shot at the helen vine detox center. >> reporter: tonight we're learning more about a possible motive and the suspect. >> we're happy to report that we do have a suspect in custody. >> reporter: detectives arrested a man this afternoon who they say was in a dating relationship with one of the victims who was wounded. meanwhile, those who work in recovery services say it's heartbreaking that people who give so much to help those battling addiction have been victimized. >> people don't do this work because of the money. they do it because they care about people. it's about humanity and passion. they put their heart and soul on the line. >> reporter: now marin county investigators have clarified that two of the three victims were employees of that detox center, while brittany mccann was not. reed is being held in sonoma county, he will be transferred to marin county to face charges. i'm jodi hernandez, nbc bay area

news. a deadly accident during lunch hour in san francisco's north beach. our nbc bay area chopper was overhead. a big rig hit a pedestrian. details are limited but it happened at the intersection of powell and vallejo. the truck driver is cooperating with police. the accident closed a few tre s streets in the area. we have good news tonight about two missing children from the south bay. sheriff's deputies in colorado found alexander and priscilla penaloza. their mother allegedly kidnapped them. police issued an amber alert. the kids were not hurt. a stretch of roadway in the santa cruz mountains remains closed because of the nea highw.

mandatory evacuations are in effect for a part of paradise park. was hurt. right now the fire is 45% contained. no word yet on what sparked it. there are new closures for one of the country's largest home improvement stores. lowe's is shutting down 50 locations. it will close the store in san jose and the store on dubuque avenue. 20 underperforming stores across the country are on the chopping block as well as 31 stores in canada. they decided to close all of their orchard supply stores. a new crackdown on those annoying robocalls. the action the feds just took to block spammers from your phone. i'm chief meteorologist jeff

would you be willing to share a what would you be willing to give up for cheaper rent? would you be willing to share a kitchen? the living room? a bathroom? a bay area company is banking on it. it's called co-living, and a huge 18-story complex is being planned right now in down town san jose. marianne favro is live with a closer look. >> reporter: well, star city plans to break ground here next year. it's going to be here on bassett street in down town san jose and the unit will house 750 people. but they must be willing to life in a dorm-like environment. star city says it already has 50 co-living units in san francisco, including this one renters get their own bathroom and bedroom but must be wom wng. now star city plans to build one of the largest co-living

we had some mild 70s. we'll be down to chillier 50s once we hit 9:00 tonight. with 50s coming our way later on tonight, that's going to set us up with a cold morning. we're going to be down to 49 for the south bay. 4in t 47 in the tri valley. upper 40s for san francisco and the east bay under most hly cle skies. temperatures by the afternoon about 10 degreaes above average. 78 in morgan hill, 77 in downtown san jose. 74 inerti. throughout the east bay, lots of upper 70s and low 80s in the inland valleys. 80 in pleasanton. as you go closer to the coastline, we still have the ocean breeze tomorrow in half moon bay putting you at 65

degrees. san francisco will stay in the 60s from the embarcadero right down to the ingleside. as we bring you up to the north bay, it's going to be warm, but not uncomfortable. we'll be up to 78 in santa rosa, 76 in sonoma and 75 in mill valley. no doubt, tomorrow is going to be a beautiful day. i know there are a few of you who are like, we like the sunshine. it's been nice, but where is all the rainfall headed? it's all about high pressure. this has been so extremely stubborn in object actober and t kping the jet stream to the north. and the effect again weather conditions. i want to take a look at the we've had these on again, off data. most of the bay area hasn't seen any rainfall in the past 33 to

34 days. it was pretty good in the north bay with close to an inch of rain in santa rosa. but for most of the bay area, it's only been trace amounts to .700 of an inch. i still do not see any pattern change. we're looking at dry weather and mild, low 70s in san francisco by thursday and friday. inland valleys, we'll stay with some pretty steady temperatures as we head right into friday's forecast. i am watching out on thursday. low humidity and a dry breeze might bring us a fire weather watch on thursday. we'll keep an eye on that. and we'll stay with these 70s. the best chance of above-average rain goes to texas and the southeast. what does that mean for the bay area? at this point we are likely trending for winter average to maybe below average on the
