[ light laughter ] despite saying this afternoon that they are, quote, "very bad for our country," president trump today denied that his attacks on minority congresswomen are racially motivated. said trump, "i am not now, and have never been, motivated." [ laughter and applause cnn has announced the candidate line-ups for each night of the upcoming second democratic debate and when joe biden saw his competition, he said, "nice! nice nice aw, damn it! [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause according to a new poll, senator elizabeth warren is believed to be the most prepared of the democratic presidential candidates the poll was conducted by, oh, elizabeth warren wow. [ laughter ] wow, she is good former london mayor and pro-brexit leader boris johnson is expected to be named prime mini o

>> seth: last week, after he incited a crowd at his rally to chant "send her back" about minnesota congresswoman ilhan omar, an american citizen and somali refugee, trump initially claimed to be unhappy about the chant he inspired, which was obviously bs it's like if mr. met started pumping up the crowd at a game, and then when they chanted, "let's go mets," he said, "whoa, whoa, whoa guys. [ light laughter ] that is uncalled for." [ light laughter ] donald trump is not known for disavowing racism. in fact, he won't disavow anyone who supports or praises it, because he's a raging narcissist he rails against communism, but if mao came back from the dead and endorsed him, trump would start wearing tunics the next day. [ laughter and applause we've been here before countless times. like the time he repeatedly refused to disavow the support of former kkk leader david duke. and then later lied and said it was because he couldn't hear the question >> he says, "i'm just talking about david duke and the ku klux klan here. and you said "honestly, i don't know david duke. >> let me tell you okay

so let me tell you i'm sitting in a house in florida with a very bad earpiece that they gave mndld hardly hear what he was saying >> seth: even when he lies, he sounds like an addled grandpa facetiming with his grandkids from a nursing home. i'm here in this house in florida. [ laughter ] i can't hardly hear what you're saying my ear trumpet is on the fritz [ laughter and applause and then there was trump's reaction to charlottesville when he refused to condemn neo nazis and white supremacists two days later, trump's advisors again had to wrangle him to issue a statement disavowing the white supremacists, and it was against trump's wishes aides tried to convince the president he needed to clarify his remarks, but trump appeared to resist, repeatedly saying, "i don't know about this, this doesn't feel right to me." and then after he gave the speech, trump told his aides, "that was bigges[ bleep ] mistake i've made. that's the worst speech i've ever given." [ light laughter ] wst eech ye dude, you've given speeches that technically don't even qualify as human speech. >> there's another crucial election in north carolina's

[ laughter ] god bless the united shashes [ laughter ] >> seth: trump has repeatedly refused to disavow racism, because he's a racist. and the core of his world view is that citizenship for nonwhite people is conditional. if you don't praise him, you're not a legitimate citizen, which is why he can't stop mounting racist attacks on the four democratic congresswomen known as the squad, repeating those attacks in unhinged tweets on sunday and again today >> the president tweeting, "i don't believe the four congresswomen are capable of loving our country they should apologize to america and israel for the horrible, hateful, things they have said they are destroying the democratic party, but are weak and insecure people who can never destroy our great nation." >> "the squad is a very racist group of troublemakers who are young, inexperienced, and not very smart." >> seth: alright, first of all, you're calling them troublemakers?

are you trying to sound like a "scooby doo" villain [ laughter ] i mean, it would make sense, since your face looks like a halloween mask [ light laughter ] his presidency should end with the gang tying him up in an abandoned amusement park [ light laughter ] second, it never stops being amazing to me how much he projects on to other people. he called them weak, insecure, racist, inexperienced, and not very smart what's next? "they can't even pronounce basic words. that's why they hate the - >> united shashes. [ laughter ] >> seth: but while trump - [ cheers and applause while trump was waging his racist attacks last week, we found out about yet another potential crime that almost certainly would have landed trump in a courtroom if he were not the president. first, let's just remember that right now one big reason trump hasn't been charged with a crime is the fact that justice department guidelines say a sitting president cannot be indicted, and that's not explicitly written in the constitution or anything it started with a memo that's more than 40-years-old >> we hahaa n named robert dixoh

of justice's office of legal counsel way back in 1973, whendt while sitting in office. >> seth: that's right. trump can't be indicted because of a memo written in 1973. people ignore memos every day. we sent out 15 memos, but devon's still microwaving fish in the break room. [ laughter ] those guidelines are part of why robert mueller didn't charge trump with obstruction of justice. in fact, mueller will testify on wednesday in congress where he will surely be asked point blank by democrats if trump would have been indicted had it not been for those guidelines, and today in the oval office trump pretended like he wouldn't be paying that much attention to the hearings >> no, i'm not going to be watching probably. maybe i'll see a little bit of it i'm not going to be watching mueller, because you can't take all those bites out of the apple. he still ruled no collusion, no ago. this has been going on for 2 1/2 years. >> seth: no, i agree with you that this thing that's been

going on for 2 1/2 years should have ended a long time ago also, no one believes you when you say you're not going to be watching all you do is watch tv if the mueller hearings weren't on, you'd be live tweeting "days of our lives." "jessica's evil twin is back from the dead. not nice." [ laughter ] and it's not just mueller. last week we also found out that the justice department guidelines might be why trump wasn't charged with a crime in the hush money schemes he orchestrated during the 2016 campaign to cover up affairs, which ultimately resulted in his personal fixer, michael cohen, going to jail last week, we found out that investigators said that trump was the one who was directly involved when a court unsealed documents detailing trump's communication with cohen to coordinate the illegal hush payments >> breaking news new documents released last hour promptina uncomfortable question for the white house. did the president commit a crime? today, a judge unsealed search warrant materials in connection to the michael cohen case and the effort to buy the silence of women who say they had affairs

with the president the documents mentioned the president by name. >> according to the documents, then candidate donald trump, his former attorney, and former aide, hope hicks, may have discussed ways to stop adult film star stormy daniels from going public about an alleged affair with trump. according to an fbi special agent who wrote in the affidavit, a series of phone calls took place in october 2016 just before the election. >> a lead fbi investigating agent writes in the documents, "based on the timing of these ce text messages and emails, i believe at least some of these communications concern the need to prevent clifford, a reference to stormy daniels, from going public, particularly in the wake of the 'access hollywood' story. >> seth: the president was allegedly involved in the cover-up of a crime in the last ekke in the top ten news stories last week. this is how he wears us down it's like being in a zombie movie. anybody can outrun one zombie. but when your citys with zombies you're like, [ bleep ] it, just eat me.

[ cheers and applause we'll all be zombies this is the core of trumpism he marries racism with corrupt plutocracy it's not just his cabinet that's been riddled with scandal. he's doled out tax cuts to the wealthy and corporations, slashed environmental regulations, and gutted consumer protections. and of course, he's been personally profiting off the presidency, himself. >> "washington post" reports that lobbyists representing the saudi government paid for an estimated 500 rooms at president trump's d.c. hotel in the months after his election the total bill for those trips, more than $270,000 >> t-mobile executives booked dozens of nights at the trump hotel last year once their merger needed trump administration approval. >> nbc news has obtained documents showing that trump international hotel billed the secret service $215,000 for the period between september 2016 and february 2018. >> president trump's golf habit has cost the american people

some $102 million and counting >> seth: so not only has the presidency allowed trump to commit indictable offenses with impunity, it's also allowed him to personally profit off the presidency i wouldn't be surprised if he started selling off pieces of the oval office on craigslist. "good desk, made of wood, has light ketchup stains." [ laughter ] so trump's base gets to revel in his open racism while he plunders the government, and doles out favors and tax cuts to his rich buddies who knows if he'll ever be held accountable for his crimes, but when it comes to the trump presidency, one thing is clear -- >> this thing should have ended a long time ago. >> seth: this has been "a closer look." [ cheers and applause ♪ >> seth: very, very excited about this, fred fred, this is mark rothko's 1961 master work, "orange, red, yellow." fred, tell us about this classic painting >> fred: it was, you know, originally a mistake [ laughter ] it was, you know, the paintings at this time were -- i don't know if you know this about art, but these were commissioned by very, very wealthy families. you know, a lot of rich, rich families would commission these works. >> seth: okay. >> fred: and so this family were

[ laughter ] and then so they were like - >> seth: see, i will say, i feel like an art historian would have more details than just this family [ laughter ] >> fred: yeah, it was the kennington family and they were, like, "we need to commission some work. they were like, "great." so they looked up artists, and they found rothko. and they were like, "he seems great. >> seth: and this is before the internet, so how do you look up an artist? [ laughter ] >> fred: at the time, it was yellow pages and white pages >> seth: okay, good. so they found mark rothko in the yellow pages [ laughter ] >> fred: i think, yes, yes >> seth: okay. >> fred: they searched him out, and they found him, and they were like, "hi, how are you doing? you know, would you mind -- we need to commission some art. can you do a fire engine?" he's like, "when do you need it?" [ laughter ] they're like, "we're commissioning -- you're the artist, please, be free paint as you will. and he's like, "how close up do you want me to do it?" and they're like, "that's up to you. [ light laughter ] but they -- so this is the front bumper this is toward the front [ laughter ]

[ laughter ] >> there's been times metaphorically i'd like to send our president. >> seth: you -- this is a true story that you have. this says, "the nerd gene is strong in you. >> yes yeah [ laughter ] >> seth: and i think that's one of the nice things [ cheers and applause yeah >> i am -- and i just want to say this, i had the privilege just this week of getting some campaign support from leonard nimoy's widow, susan nimoy. so, it's like for me - >> seth: that's very nice. >> these are the -- these are the -- have her on my team [ cheers and applause >> seth: and i do think it's important to note that i think even 10, 20 years ago, someone who was sort of out as a nerd would have no chance running for president in this country. i think everything has changed for the better insofar that fiction -- >> yes, yes. >> seth: -- this is now fully >> we are living the conclusion of the movie, "revenge of the nerds," which is now - >> seth: yes [ laughter ] >> -- it is now very cool to be a nerd in fact, i try to hide the fact that i was an all-american

[ laughter ] >> yes, yes. >> seth: now i would imagine in the moment you were probably not aware that this was going to be one of the takeaways of the debate >> yeah. the coaching i got from my campaign team, these are really incredible professionals, was, "don't do that again." [ laughter ] >> seth: so we should not look for a return - >> no, no, no, you will not see the return of the side eye unless - i'll be standing next to joe biden this time. >> seth: okay, gotcha. >> so it depends on what - >> seth: well that wasn't really fair, because i also feel like they must tell you -- you know,

obviously, you're watching and you want to be respectful and you want to look at somebody and you did not know you were especially right next to joe biden. you might -- a two shot is easier than three shots. you got to be really careful >> you're two shots beyond me right now. [ laughter ] >> seth: you talk about, in all seriousness, insofar as we talk about politeness, which will be an interesting thing in this campaign going forward, you talk about civic greats and you talk about courageous empathy can you speak a little bit to what you mean by those ideas and also the difficulty in expressing those, in practicing those at a time where the opponent will likely not be using those. >> yeah, i mean, look, i was running on an iowa stage, and we were so psyched. hundreanfof university.es, "duh donald trump in the face." and i stop in my tracks and i go, "dude, that's a felony, man. [

and, you know, this -- donald trump is a guy who you understand he hurts you, and my testosterone sometimes makes me want to feel like punching him, which would be bad for this elderly out of shape man that he is if i did that [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause physically -- physically weak specimen a physically weak specimen but you see what i'm talking there? even -- that's his tactics and you don't beat a bully like him fighting him on his tactics, on his terms, using his turf he's the body shamer he's the guy that shows -- tries to drag people in the gutter and i -- and this is a moral moment in america. and to me, what we need from our next leader especially after th us to the worst of who we are but call us the best of who we are. and we need to be as a party - in this moral moment, we need not to talk about necessarily what we're against, but what

we're for, and the best way of looking at this is just our history. the gardens of our democracy have never been free of the weeds of bigotry, hatred, a demagoguery. every generation has had them. i literally had one of -- an elder friend of mine text me saying, listening to donald trump's rally last week, he was talking -- the words he was using reminded him of a george wallace rally that he watched in black and white and now it's in living color but how did we beat them before? first of all, don't mistake strength for -- to be strong, you need to be mean. we beat bull connor, for demagoguery with more. but these were incredible artists of activism that called to the moral imagination of a country, that called us to a greater -- a revival of that civic race that pulled black folks and white folks and more folks together that relegated that demagogue to the ash heap of history we will not beat donald trump by trying to be more like him but by showing that we are not like

him. we are not weak morally. we are not weak mentally we're a strong nation, and we're a nation that unites [ cheers and applause >> seth: it does seem like - obviously, it's going to be a difficult undertaking for whoever the nominee is to take back the white house it might even be more statistically difficult for the democratic party to take back the senate so let's say you're in the white us still running the senate where does -- where can you find any optimism to think that you can get something done as long as mitch mcconnell, who has been incredibly effective no matter what you think about him, effective in sort of having this republican platform that has been a wall that's been impossible to break through. >> so that's the distinction of my record. look, i was the mayor of new jersey's largest city in the middle of a recession where people told me what we couldn't do and now from transforming our school system, to the biggest e people said couldn't be done i got to the senate, one of the things that drove me there was the fact that we have one of the

say we're the land of the free but we incarcerate 25% of the globe's incarcerated people. and i went there to do something about it and i remember people in my own party telling me you're never going to get legislation like this passed through the united states senate, especially freeing people from prison at a time in the aftermath of willie horton where everybody is going to be afraid to do that. well, with mitch mcconnell there, i led from the democratic side a bill that not only got passed but right now, last week, we saw thousands of people being released, the overwhelming majority of them being african-americans. >> seth: this is the f >> the first step ever to people saying things can't get done and why i fight so hard in this election, i tell people, i know that the number one thing people want in my party is just to beat donald trump and i'm like," that is a floor, it is not the ceiling. we have to have bigger aspirations. if we make this election all about him, that's a small man, one office that's not what i want this

election to just be about. we will beat him i will beat him. but we've got to make this more of a movement election to create new american majorities. and i'm not talking about democratic majorities. but the fact of the matter is we actually agree on more than we disagree the lines that divide us, they're not as big as the ties that bind us and so, i think our generation now, and this election and this moral moment has to begin not to resign ourselves to fractured broken government but aspire to do what our ancestors did. we just came off a weekend where they created the new american majority to defy the limits of human potential and put a person on the moon. it's time for our generation to begin to reject divisive and ine people so that we in our generation can defy gravity as well and do the things that other people think are i know it's got to be busy out there. >> thank you >> seth: best of luck in the next round of debates. that's cory booker, everybody. we'll be right back with fred savage. >> fred savage [ cheers and applause ♪

"what just happened??! >> seth: "what just happened??!" the premise is unlike anything . show explaining this >> it's an after-show for a show that doesn't exist >> seth: right [ light laughter ] >> and so we wanted to do a talk show and we wanted to find an interesting way in, so we came up with this idea for a big high-concept drama called "the flair" that was based on a series of books called "the moon is the sun at night. [ light laughter ] written by t.j. whitford, very reclusive author who lives in a -- >> seth: so this is all just a make-believe backstory >> all make-believe backstory. so the first two minutes of our show is the last two minutes of that week's episode of "the flair.

and that always ends in some moment of, like, high drama or suspense and it minimizes in the corner of the screen and cuts to me on stage going, "what just happened that's crazy!" and we talk about it and then we have celebrity guests on and we go out. we leave the stage and go do remote comedy pieces >> seth: and you play a heightened version of fred savage. >> i play a heightened version of me which is like a heightened version of a person. anyway [ light laughter ] >> seth: so it's like double heightened >> it's a lot of me. it's a lot of this it's a lot of this >> seth: you- your actual children and wife are on an episode. >> my, yeah, they play my family there's an episode where - [ laughter ] >> seth: they don't have a ton of range i've -- yeah >> you start with what you know, you know and then you go from there and they play my family. and my wife is upset that i'm spending too much time at work and not spending enough time with the family. so she comes up with her own show called "what just happened while you were at 'what just happened??!' >> seth: oh wow. >> and she has a talk show at home and my kids are the house band and my son auggie, my 6-year-old is on drums. >> seth: oh wow.
