what a special night it is our entire audience is made up of people gordon sondland implicated in the ukraine scandal. isn't that beautiful [ cheers and applause it's a special night that's right today was day four of the impeachment hearings i don't want to say things are bad for trump, but right now, not even baby yoda could cheer that guy up. [ laughter ] i mean, it was a wild day in washington today we heard testimony from ambassador gordon sondland, who directly implicated trump in the ukraine scandal. [ audience oohs you could tell it was bad for trump, because he did something he never does. he turned off the tv [ laughter ] and that's when you know it's bad. yep, ambassador sondland basically implicated trump, rudy giuliani, and most of his cabinet. at this point, trump grabbed his chest and said, "i think i'm ready for phase two of my physical." [ laughter ] seriously, sondland named all of them. he was basically the oprah of witnesses. like, "you're going to jail! you're going to jail you're going to jail you're going to jail!" if you didn't see sondland flip on trump today, basically it looked like this ♪ >> jimmy: yeah, it was - ♪ can we - [ laughter ] can we see a photo of gordon sondland. there he is. yeah [ light laughter ] some of you may recognize him from his famous line in "the princess bride" when he said, "inconceivable." [ laughter ] the bombshell from today's hearing happened when ambassador sondland clearly stated there was a quid pro quo. >> was there a quid pro quo with regard to the requested white house call and the white house meeting? the answer is yes. [ audience oohs >> jimmy: the quid pro quo is really bad news for trump. mostly because now he has to learn latin words. [ laughter ] "i barely know english expecto patronum." don't tell him don't tell him right after that, mike pence was on the phone like, "can you send someone to move all my stuff in to the oval office? thank you. [ light laughter ] but later in the hearing, sondland was questioned about mike pence's role in all of this >> now, you mentioned that you also had a conversation with vice president pence what did you say to the vice president? >> i said, "it appears that everything is stalled until this statement gets made." and the vice president nodded like, you know, he heard what i said >> jimmy: then pence was back on the phone like, "um, on second thought, you can cancel that last request. [ laughter ] all day long people were calling sondland's testimony explosive. explosive. i haven't heard the word explosive so much since chipotle started selling queso [ laughter ] this is going viral, after sondland noted many times in his opening statements there was a quid pro quo, there was a brief recess and you could see the disappointment in devin nunes' face take a look at this.

[ laughter ] well, millions of people have watched the trump impeachment hearings, but there are reports that americans are starting to tune out some people say they just don't understand who any of the main players are. so we thought we'd help you out by telling you who they are, along with some trivia about them it's time for "tonight show impeachment trivia." i'm not saying trump is worried, but at one point during the flight he opened the door to get some air [ laughter ] >> steve: wall >> jimmy: meanwhile, impeachment hearings were happening, trump toured apple's manufacturing facility in texas with apple ceo tim cook. now previously, trump called apple ceo tim cook, tim apple. [ laughter ] but to his credit, trump didn't make the same mistake this time he called him tim computer [ laughter ] "tim computer, very nice to see you. i'm not sure trump's mind was in the right place at the apple facility at one point he started swallowing a bunch of pills until someone said, "sir, those are air pods." [ laughter ] oh, earlier tonight was the -- "i wonder why they're so long. [ laughter ] >> steve: "oh, those are gonna hurt." >> jimmy: "i thought it was the deluxe tylenol i have no idea." earlier tonight was the fifth democratic debate. going into it, biden was in first and warren was in second but after what happened today, the new democratic favorite is gordon sondland. >> steve: oh >> jimmy: tonight's debate was hosted by msnbc and "the washington post. i guess they tried to get the two things trump hates the most, but eric and don jr. were busy [ laughter ] [ audience oohs well, the grammy nominations were announced today, and i saw that lizzo led everyone with eight nominations. has it been 50 years >> i know, it's amazing. and i'll never forget when i got to be a member that was always my dream when i was kid. i was to be on the grand ole opry and this -- when they said, "you got to celebrate 50 years." i thought, "i'm not even 50 years old." ha ha. >> jimmy: exactly. exactly. [ laughter ] >> no, but it's, like, it was amazing to think that i have been a member of the grand ole opry for 50 years. and so, of course, we had to do a special. we have a lot of wonderful artists that performed >> jimmy: how do you even choose the songs i mean, you have, like -- you've written, like, over 3,000 songs. >> well, i only chose the -- my main ones. i did, like, a 30 minute segment. but we had other artist featured not just on my songs, but their songs as well. so they did it at the new auditorium the new opry but i went back to the old ryman and did a lot of narration. narration to kind of go back and forth to the things i sang hank liam's senior song. so long to -- a capella at the old opry >> jimmy: i could cry. oh, my god >> so i kind of tell stories about the old -- of the old days when i started. and they show a lot of footage and pictures of the old days

and then we go back to the new opry >> jimmy: and you do go to hits you do, like, "9 to 5. >> yeah, actually i started out with "9 to 5." >> jimmy: you got to do "9 to 5," yeah i mean, i love - >> yeah, you know, "9 to 5." i know, i love it too. >> jimmy: you've got to give the hits, right? >> i know, 'cause that's the one we have to, you know, we started out with a -- with a a bang you guys know "9 to 5? [ laughter ] but, anyways, thank you guys you know that one. >> jimmy: it wasn't bad. >> it was fun. >> jimmy: and if you open with that, what do you close with >> well, i actually do a little bit of "i'll always love you." >> jimmy: oh, yeah >> that's the way i close all my shows i have for many, many years. >> jimmy: yeah >> and i say to my fans this is a song about love. and, you know, it's very important to me. but -- >> jimmy: it's the greatest love song in the world >> well, one of them >> jimmy: it actually wasn't even about love, really? when you first wrote it. >> no, it was about love but when i wrote it, i worked with a man named porter wagoner for years. >> jimmy: okay >> and i started out on his tv show and so i had said when i started that i'd stay for five years. but i wanted to have my own career and so when the time came, we were very successful and i wanted to go and he didn't want me to go. and we fought a lot. anyway, 'cause i was stubborn. and he was stubborn. and it was one of those love hate relationships

>> jimmy: sure >> so, anyway, he wasn't hearing of it. and it was just breaking my heart. so i went home and i wrote this song. so the next morning, i went down and i said, "porter, sit down i want to sing you a song. so i started singing it. he started crying. he said, "well, you can go if i can produce that song. [ laughter ] so he did. >> jimmy: wow, got you good right there. >> and the rest was history. >> jimmy: oh, my gosh. >> but i always close my shows with it. >> jimmy: i think -- but you were -- before you were dolly parton, we all know you. i think you were always a famous local celebrity weren't you? >> yeah, i actually started singing on local radio and television before we even owned a tv but from the time i was 10 to i was, like, 13, you know, 14, you know, i was doing that so i was like a little local celebrity. >> jimmy: really >> yeah. >> jimmy: and what would you -- what was it like being - >> well, it was fun 'cause everybody knew me. we were still poor but, you know, being on tv, people just think you're rich. they paid me, like, about $15. $12, $15 a week. and so i would always take my mom and my sisters up to gatlinburg, tennessee. that's a wonderful little town

and i'd take them up to the pancake house to eat and so -- can i tell you a a story? something fun that happened about that >> jimmy: sure >> 'cause once when i took them up there, we were in the restaurant and so we were having our meal and this old man came over to our table. and he sat down. and he was just talking to us. and we were all laughing we didn't know him and we just, you know, we were all just kind -- and then so he finally -- he left and we finished. so i went up to the pay the bill and the man said, "well, your grandpa left his bill here too. i said, "my grandpa? [ laughter ] so that old man had come over and kind of scammed us and i said, "well, that wasn't my grandpa." but i paid it, of course so when we left, i walked down the street and he was standing there at the light. and, you know, we walked to the corner and so i went over to him. i said, "hey, i would have been happy, you know, to have paid your bill. you know, i said, "but telling them you're my grandpa." and he took his walking stick and he started just beating me

to show kind of why jolene is the way she is and so it's a little different than the song. but it turned out really well. >> jimmy: what is "jolene" -- what was it based on "jolene? >> well, the real story was about my husband you know, this -- when i tell this story about this girl that worked at the bank when we first got married. you know, this beautiful redhead. and he's spending more time at the bank than we had money [ laughter ] and i thought, "well, that ain't gonna to work out to good." >> jimmy: no >> yeah, but, anyway, so that's kind of what that was based on but, just so you know, i did see jolene not that long ago >> jimmy: oh, yeah >> she's not so hot now. [ laughter and applause she's not. you know, she used to have that beautiful red hair now she's gray she used to have a tight butt. and now she can't get -- it's a tight spot getting her butt through the door now [ laughter ] and she used to wear a d cup now she's wearing depends.
