[ audience oohs [ laughter ] seriously, it was like watching "the view" on bath salts it was like watching a debate between two dj air horns [ air horn ] [ laughter ] it was a lot to stomach. if the debate aired on netflix, they would have had a popup that asked, "how are you still watching?" like the "new york post" headline said, "a hot mess of a debate." "washington post" one that said "trump sets the tone for the worst presidential debate in living memory. this headline said, "millions stay up until 4:00 a.m. googling, 'how do i move to canada?' [ laughter ] this one said, "duggarita stock up 75%."

finally this last headline says, "priest seen yelling, 'yes, today, satan.' [ laughter and applause "yes, today, satan." oh the debate was crazy some people compared it to a a circus and get this, during cnn's post-debate coverage, van jones shared a message from actual circus workers >> circus workers actually reached out to my team they say, "actually, we take offense. we are careful and respectful people and we work very carefully together." so even circus workers are taking offense, this was worse than a circus. >> jimmy: yeah [ laughter ] clowns don't want to be compared to trump. they were like, "sure we both wear a lot of makeup, but we pay way more in taxes. [ laughter ] you know what's a crazy night when a guy on cnn very seriously says, "i've just received a message from some circus workers [ laughter ]

they're not pleased. of course, one of the biggest moments that everyone's still talking about is when frump failed to condemn white supremacists and instead told them to stand back and stand by here is some reaction to that comment. >> it was really a sad night for our country in that the president of the united states would not dissociate himself from white supremacists. >> sir, should the president have condemned white supremacists last night at the debate >> of course of course. >> i think he misspoke i think he should correct it if he doesn't correct it, i guess he didn't misspeak >> donald trump blew the biggest lay-up in the history of debates by saying -- not condemning white supremacists. >> jimmy: yeah, it's not good when you ask the president if he'll condemn white supremacy and the "jeopardy!" music starts playing in his head while he thinks it over. ♪ ♪ [ laughter ]

[ laughter ] and they did so that's my friend ashley thinking glee, that's her cat, fred >> jimmy: yeah, not bad. very, very -- very talented. i think -- it could be a coffee table book just saying. i want to talk about "a tale of witchcraft. this is your 16th book >> 16th. yeah >> jimmy: do these get any easier for you to write? what was the process like for this guy >> writing this book was an interesting experience, because i was recovering from hip surgery for the majority of it yeah >> jimmy: oh >> as a matter of fact, as soon as i woke up from the operation, first thing i did was order a vodka soda from one of the nurses. but that was beside the point.

but yeah, so -- as i was -- as i was editing my first draft, i was going through it, and i could -- because i was in a lot of pain, recovering. i -- i -- i could tell in the writing when i had just taken a pill and when i really needed a pill >> jimmy: wow. >> like -- like i -- my descriptions got very harsh of the characters i would be like, "lucy walked into the castle with her stupid little face. you know >> jimmy: really >> i just needed to -- to take another pill and -- and chill out. >> jimmy: usually with each book you go on a book tour, we talk about that. and you enjoyed doing those tours. but things are a little different this year, obviously so you're doing a virtual book tour and it kicked off last night talk to me about what are these like what do they consist of? >> i talk to the kids, a read a little from the book, we play games, and we do q&a and that kind of stuff. and i had the brilliant idea, because i thought this was a a great -- i thought it was a great idea

i'd have celebrity surprise guests last night, julie andrews surprised me >> jimmy: no >> and i'm telling myself as she appeared from the screen, i'm like, "act cool, act cool, act cool, act cool, children are watching, children are watching, children are watching." >> jimmy: it's julie andrews >> i just peed my pants, i couldn't i gasped, i -- i -- que. it was -- it was quite an incredible moment. >> jimmy: well, these books, like you said, they're very popular with kids. but they do tackle grown-up themes what can you say about what's going on in "a tale of witchcraft" >> it's a -- of course, it's a a fantastical adventure about wacky witches. but at its heart, it's really a story about hate and fear and mental health. and hopefully that will -- hopefully reading this book will make it a little easier for parents to have conversations with their kids about mental health. and maybe some kids will pick up on some of the advice and tools that i give in the book to help themselves if they need it
