big policy change coming to airbnb. news at 11:00 starts now. thanks for joining us, i'm terry mcsweeney, audrey is off. we know the sudden death of young san jose police officer was because of fentanyl overdose. growing issue facing the bay area and country as more families lose loved ones. officer packard was just a rookie. marianne favro. >> reporter: the police chief says any allegation of officer using illegal drugs is concerning. rookie with the pd, graduating in 2021. when the police conducted a welfare check at his home, found the 24-year-old unresponsive. santa clara county medical examiner's office confirm he died from multiple toxicity.

he was at party with fellow officers night before he died and sources say the officers could face internal and criminal investigations. police chief issued a statement today saying the full details are not known and being investigated by milpitas police department with our full cooperation. this behavior is not something we condone. we will continue to assist with their investigation. we need to be mindful of the fact we're not immune to issues that plague society, in this case substance abuse. a problem that's growing. in 2019, 29 fentanyl deaths in santa clara county, jumped to more than 100 last year. >> we've had dramatic increase in deaths from fentanyl toxicity. most of the people dying don't even know they're taking it. buying a bill, maybe online or
