big policy change coming to airbnb. news at 11:00 starts now. thanks for joining us, i'm terry mcsweeney, audrey is off. we know the sudden death of young san jose police officer was because of fentanyl overdose. growing issue facing the bay area and country as more families lose loved ones. officer packard was just a rookie. marianne favro. >> reporter: the police chief says any allegation of officer using illegal drugs is concerning. rookie with the pd, graduating in 2021. when the police conducted a welfare check at his home, found the 24-year-old unresponsive. santa clara county medical examiner's office confirm he died from multiple toxicity.

he was at party with fellow officers night before he died and sources say the officers could face internal and criminal investigations. police chief issued a statement today saying the full details are not known and being investigated by milpitas police department with our full cooperation. this behavior is not something we condone. we will continue to assist with their investigation. we need to be mindful of the fact we're not immune to issues that plague society, in this case substance abuse. a problem that's growing. in 2019, 29 fentanyl deaths in santa clara county, jumped to more than 100 last year. >> we've had dramatic increase in deaths from fentanyl toxicity. most of the people dying don't even know they're taking it. buying a bill, maybe online or

pedestrian hit and killed by car in san jose. 6:30, north capital avenue near 680. driver remained at the scene. 30th traffic death in san jose this year, 17 pedestrians. city on pace to shatter record of 50 set last year. rescued from burning car, oakland fire department tweeting out pictures of incredible high stakes rescue effort tonight. crashed in north oakland, first responders had to use jaws of life to get driver out as car burned. man being treated but survived. new developments, a tentative agreement between stanford health and striking nurses. around 5,000 at stanford and lucille patrick children's hospitals have been walking the picket line, demanding better conditions and other things as well. they reached a deal, said

crash. war in ukraine, focus remains on the steel plant with the last of ukraine's fighters in the city. barricaded for weeks with civilians. at least 20 civilians were able to leave safely from mariupol according to video from ukrainian commander. now trying to broker a deal to evacuate the rest of the civilians. new video from the bombed out city, people there say they're living in basements to survive. russia's foreign minister warned any weapons shipments to the ukraine are fair game. but from the u.s. they continue. massive operation to get weapons into the hands of ukrainian soldiers. dover air force planes leave for eastern europe, hoping to stop russia's new advance into eastern ukraine. those involved in the operation say it feels good to know the

to 5:00 monday, next storm passes north, not bringing rain but wind speeds pick up, trend gusty again for monday ahead of warming trend in middle part of the week. 60s and 70s monday, temperatures start to climb. 80s inland into tuesday. wednesday, talk about changes of the season, looks like summer. 85 degrees in san jose, 70 in san francisco. oakland might be 80 on wednesday. see it in the seven-day forecast bottom of the screen. if you want spring showers and cooler temperatures, you're covered, too. highs weaken, more clouds into friday, by this time next weekend we hope to see showers as we move into the first weekend of may. rain total now looking light, we'll take anything we can get. better odds across the north bay.

under district attorney gascón, i prosecuted car break-ins. all repeat offenders, often in organized crime rings. but when chesa boudin took office, he dissolved the unit and stopped me from collaborating with the police on my cases. now home and car break-ins are on the rise because repeat offenders know they can get away with it.
