here is pete suratos. >> reporter: the 4500 block of sargent avenue in castro valley is usually a relatively quiet neighborhood. recently it's seen its fair share of catalytic converter thefts. it is taking things to a whole other level. a homeowner shot and wounded while confronting someone trying to steal his catalytic converter. >> obviously that's horrible. i've heard about it. >> now they're hurting people. it's dangerous and scary. >> reporter: multiple suspects tried to cut the catalytic converter from this car just before 4:00 a.m. that's when the homeowner tried to confront them and was shot in the leg. at one point deputies spotted the suspects but lost them during a freeway chase. chp eventually found the suspect's car in walnut creek at

the scene of a solo car accident. several catalytic converters were found in the trunk but the suspects were nowhere to be found. >> what's concerning about this particular case and in another recent case in oakland is how the suspects are willing to go from committing a theft to gun violence. >> reporter: ray kelly is referring to a recent catalytic converter theft in oakland when thieves shot and killed a man who confronted them. and that's why lieutenant kelly is saying to avoid at all costs. >> be a good witness, take video, let us work it from there. you are much more important to us than a catalytic converter. >> reporter: the sheriff's office says the castro valley homeowner is expected to recover and they're trying to locate the four suspects. the overnight shooting has many in the neighborhood rethinking how they would react in a similar situation.

>> most likely during the event i would be thinking about my family and not endangering them more. >> reporter: pete suratos, nbc bay area news. a silicon valley congressman is calling on the u.s. to suspend armed sales to saudi arabia. representative ro khanna is partnering with blumenthal on the bill. they say the only reason to decrease supplies is to help the russians and harm americans. they say that's inappropriate behavior from a long time u.s. ally. >> we're not going to allow that kind of ingratitude to stand, and that's why i am very encouraged the president has said there will be consequences. senator blumenthal and i have a reasonable proposal which is just to pause the weapons sales. >> that's what they want and say if saudi arabia reconsiders the

armed sales may resume. a judge ordered former president trump to sit for a deposition in a lawsuit. the woman suing him is longtime new york columnist carroll. she claims mr. trump raped her in a department store in the mid-1990s. she never reported it to authorities but wrote about it in the 2019 book and article. mr. trump has accused carroll of making up the attack to sell the book and hurt him politically. she said his response hurt her reputation so she's suing him for defamation. alex jones did not go to court but the sandy hook parents who are suing him did and many wept when the jury awarded them nearly a billion dollars. jones claimed the 2012 sandy hook massacre was staged. jones reacted on his infowars show calling the proceedings a, quote, kangaroo court. this comes nearly two months after a texas jury awarded

nearly $50 million to the parents of another child killed in the massacre. free speech systems which carries jones' show has filed for bankruptcy. jones and the company face a third trial at the end of this year filed by another set of parents who lost a child. >> there is a heated debate in san francisco about how to fix the city's opioid overdose crisis. the mayor, police chief and new district attorney say they have a plan that includes a crackdown on dealers and care for addicts. the city's public defender says this is nothing more than a new war on drugs saying the city can't arrest its way out of this problem. here is nbc bay area's christie smith. >> reporter: the tenderloin neighborhood is ground zero for the city's opioid crisis, but the city's public defender says the mayor and the latest effort to solve it won't work. >> the war on drugs criminalizing the supply, nothing to reduce the demand. >> reporter: today the public defender and other treatment advocates urged the city to

rethink its tactics for addressing the crisis. >> let's come together and create a broad network that helps keep people who use drugs connected and engaged in care. >> reporter: the ideas range from enhanced addiction treatment to more supportive housing. the city's approach of treatment for addicts and jail for dealers won't work. the l.a. responded with a statement that read in part, let me be clear. it is absurd to claim the war on drugs is being restarted. my office is targeting serious dealers and working to connect drug users to treatment. the mayor's office noted the city has invested heavily in treatment services but says there's also a need for accountability. just last week the mayor called out those who sell on the streets and those who repeatedly refuse service. >> the open air drug dealing that is destroying our city. >> reporter: today the d.a. announced the arrest of a

suspected dealer in possession of more than seven pounds of fentanyl leading the mayor to tweet this is the accountability our residents deserve. but tenderloin founder sees it this way seeing the d.a. and the police need to come together with those on the other side to find a real solution. >> let's go back to the table and sit down and do a collaborative strategy approach as to how we're going to deal with our enemy which is called fentanyl. i've been to more funerals in the last 12 months than in all of my 75 years. the world health organization is working to prevent the spread of ebola in africa. 74 confirmed cases in uganda. 39 people have died. last week the u.s. started screening people who spent time in uganda. there are no known cases of ebola here in the u.s. as of right now. ebola virus is not airborne.

someone would have to be in direct contact with bodily fluids of an infected patient. a w.h.o. doctor said it needs more international support to spread awareness of the disease and contain the outbreak. there is a new launch date for nasa's mission to the moon. artemis one has missed a few launch windows. the rocket was not damaged by hurricane ian. nasa scientists announced the next date is set for november 14th. this is the first of several missions with astronauts actually landing on the moon. it would be the first time in 50 years. let's go live at sfo where united airlines announced a new nonstop certificate industries beginning next may united will offer service from sfo to rome. united says high demand from flights to europe is the reason behind this added flight. up next as we celebrate

like this one here. paid $468. it wasn't even a year old, though, when it stopped pumping out cool air. this thing was still under warranty. she asked black & decker, the manufacturer, so we think, for a replacement. after two sweltering summer months of going back and forth, no swap. so colleen contacted us. we emailed black & decker. a rep then explained although the ac has a black & decker label on it, it's made by a different company that licenses the black & decker name. here is what they said. we have been in contact with the licensee and they are in the process of reaching out to the customer to address concerns and shipping a replacement product. colleen said they did exactly that. that is a $468 win for her. kudos to colleen for keeping a detailed time line when she called, who she spoke to and what they promised.

decades owner silvia ferrusquia has been the life of the party. selling dresses for weddings, proms, and, of course, quinceaneras, the coming of age celebration when a young woman turns 15. >> of course they have to be well done. this is the pillow they will kneel down. >> reporter: ferrusquia sells the necessary items for once-in-a-lifetime events which means she has to get them right. >> everybody has to be perfect. she has to look the best. >> reporter: ferrusquia practically has a birthright to this business as a kid growing up in mexico her mother sewed dresses for weddings and quinceaneras in their small town. >> my mom sewed the dresses. i watched her all the time. she did beautiful stuff. >> reporter: her mother's inspiration is with her every time she helps someone find their special dress. >> every time i help one of the girls i remember when my mom

we'll bring you outside to our live sky camera network here in concord right now and there is some haze off to the distance. we'll talk about the air quality here in two minutes. but i want to get into those temperatures. 76 if you're headed out across the bay area, it is looking good. 60s on the way as we hit 7:00, 8:00 and 9:00. the fog will be thick. it's one of those mornings you are headed out. we'll see the widespread clouds to the east bay, the south bay, right near the coast. just like today most of this really starts to clear back by the noon hour and early afternoon. some of that fog left near the coastline and that spotty drizzle. temperatures with the fog again returning, we are going to be chilly here. down to 55 in the south bay. the north bay starting off as low as 49. san francisco, 53 and the east bay at 54. daytime highs through tomorrow are actually going to cool off a couple degrees especially as you

get out here towards martinez, 74. observing, 65. napa, down to san jose dropping down to 74. morgan hill, 78. so awesome on these temperatures but there's definitely two different things you might have noticed if you have any respiratory problems. the air quality has been moderate. we haven't had any storm systems moving in to clear out the air. that could be bothering you. the lack of rain as well. elm and pine in the moderate category. i wanted to update you we're looking at a system moving close to california. no locked in chances. i'm still watching out for it. how much stays out in the pacific and how much moves into

as anyone who has taken a long flight can tell you, jet lag can take you down. the 49ers are altering their travel plans. >> the team chose not to return back to the bay area. they're staying in west virginia before their next game in atlanta. it's a bougie spot in west virginia. here is anthony flores. >> reporter: the 49ers are shifting home base this week from santa clara to west virginia. the 49ers are continuing their road trip through the south as they prepare to face the falcons sunday in atlanta. it's an upscale resort. the greenbrier is hosting the red and gold. the team is booked for a five-night stay where they will practice before playing at atlanta. >> our guys stay together.

it's easier to focus. >> reporter: weeklong road trips are nothing new to the 49ers. this is their fifth such trip in four years. they usually do it between back-to-back road games in the eastern time zone to beat the time zone troubles that can come with cross-country travel, and they've had a lot of success with this travel plan. after beating carolina last weekend the nfc west division leaders are 8-1 in extended stay road games since 2019. jimmy g says being together strengthens the bond between teammates. >> you get to spend time with guys and see a different side you don't normally see. it will be a good opportunity for us to take advantage of that, have some fun dinners together and get out and just see a different side of guys. >> reporter: the 49ers practice through friday at the greenbrier and then will head to atlanta. sunday's game kicks off at 10:00 a.m.
