>> did the early warning system work as promised? stephanie, many are wondering if the south bay will keep shaking. >> i heard from several people who said they felt the shaken san francisco, alameda, and even in salinas. we are here in downtown morgan hill. several business owners said they were opening up when the floor and ground started shaking. >> reporter: we heard a rumble. classrooms shook and many across the bay area ran for cover. here in downtown morgan hill's, business owners and customers say they felt as if they were at the epicenter of the quake.

>> it is a big one for me. the biggest i ever had. >> deeper into the city we found a family who says the 5.1 magnitude told was intense enough to do this. >> all of my perfume bottles were underneath and the mirrors where broken. >> it sometimes moves without any earthquakes at all and then we have some of the smaller ones. the largest we have ever seen >> a 6.2 magnitude earthquake. it only reached a magnitude of 5.1 but left many on alert. especially after feeling aftershock with magnitude as high as 3.6.

of you may be wondering okay, we had a this eye-popping 5.1 why was at the damage worse? it is about the topography and where this was located. the mountains helped to absorb the energy and that could be why the south bay didn't see that shaking as intense. a closer look at the aftershocks and you can see at 2.9 today. after the initial one we had to point out at 11:47. a three point five at 3:08 at a 2.8 at 5:20 tonight. when you put this on the scale of things, a 5 magnitude quake is considered moderate. there are about 1500 of them a year. that is equivalent to 1 million
