tv   Today in the Bay  NBC  May 9, 2025 6:00am-7:00am PDT

6:00 am
held his first mass as pontiff. we're live at the vatican with new details on the man who got his start in the windy city. and a new dangerous tiktok challenge involving your student's laptop. the prank now being linked to classroom disruptions or even worse, fires. this is today in the bay. it is certainly a busy friday morning around here. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia and i'm marcus washington. want to get you started right over to mike inouye following some breaking news this morning. bart service has been suspended. so, mike, catch us up on what's happening here. yeah, it's still systemm wide. so here's a live look at the walnut creek station. no one is on the platform, but notice the sign. see where it says millbrae sfo hanging below. it is a sign that would normally tell us when the next train is coming, how long that train is, timing and the destinations we are looking at. no information because there is a computer networking issue for bart system wide that includes the train control system telling us where
6:01 am
these trains are, keeping them from colliding or getting too close together. that's why they're not running trains right now. as we get back out to the map system again, this is system wide and there's no bart service, so other transit agencies are helping pick up the slack, even providing some mutual aid. and look at the bay bridge shows more traffic than we do on a typical friday, because more folks are hitting the road into the city. back to you. thanks, mike. well, today marks the first full day for catholics under the guidance of pope leo the 14th. we have a live look at saint peter's square in vatican city, where it's just after 3:00 in the afternoon. pope leo the 14th, the first ever north american pope in the church's history. and we do have some new pope, celebrated his first mass as pontiff with cardinals in the sistine chapel. it's the same place where 133 electors decided, with at least two thirds of the majority, that robert prévost should become the leader of the catholic church. the new pontiff was born in chicago, but is also a peruvian citizen. it's a country where he
6:02 am
served as missionary and archbishop today in the bay's jay gray, joining us live from the vatican, vatican city this morning. and jay, that decision really making history. yeah. marcus, laura, i think many of us never thought we would see an american pontiff lifetime. and really driving that home was that mass this morning. he was with the cardinals and worshiping with them and spoke in english, something again that we did not think we would hear. but for the first time as pope, he is speaking in english. during that mass. rome still buzzing, as you might imagine, like the rest of the world. just stunned that we now have an american leading the world's largest christian denomination. the crowd erupts in celebration as white smoke pours from the chimney atop the sistine chapel, reaching a frenzied just over an hour later as the first american born pope, leo the 14th, is introduced to
6:03 am
the world. i'm so shocked to have an american pope, but i feel so blessed that god has driven me here. and this is amazing. stepping out on the balcony of saint peter's basilica, his first words include the familiar catholic refrain peace be with you all. speaking in italian and spanish, he praises his predecessor, pope francis, making it clear he will follow in his footsteps, calling for an open and united church and urging the faithful. to help one another to build bridges through dialog, through encounter, uniting everyone to be one single people, always in peace. the 69 year old entered the conclave as cardinal robert francis prevost. born in chicago, he studied at villanova university and earned a master's of divinity at the catholic theological union in his hometown. ordained in 1982, he served in peru for nearly 40
6:04 am
years before being appointed cardinal and called back to rome by pope francis in 2023. amazing! it was so cool. so i love it, i love it. you can imagine. after blessing the crowd, the new pope spends several minutes waving and standing silently, taking it all in. the first american pontiff. yeah. and look, we do expect to see the pope publicly again this weekend. sunday. you will only imagine that saint peter's square will be packed with visitors as he makes his first sunday blessing as pope. in fact, he'll do it from the same balcony where he was introduced. yeah, that will be phenomenal to see. so, jay, i mean, it was great to see all the excitement out there from people. what was it like for you to be witness to this historic moment? oh. it was
6:05 am
amazing. i mean, the white smoke is something in and of itself. and seeing 150,000 people pour into the square. but then to hear just a bit later that it's the first american, i still get goosebumps talking about it. laura. it was a it was an amazing slice of history. we were privileged to be here. oh yeah. what an what an honor. i mean, it's great. you know, your job takes you to so many different places for you to be there. thanks for the coverage, jay. we appreciate. and of course, we'll continue our coverage of this new chapter for the catholic church throughout the day. for complete coverage, you can scan that q code on your screen. it will show you how to access our streaming platforms, including roku and nbcbayarea.com. and we broadcast there 24 hours a day, seven days a week. well, new at six parents, listen up to this a dangerous tiktok trend is making its way to northern california schools. it involves students trying to make their school issued chromebooks explode. a video shows them sticking items like pencils and springs into the charging ports, setting
6:06 am
those computers on fire. so on wednesday, the trend made itsts way to a middle school in roseville. the chromebook began smoking, and as a precaution, the teacher used a fire extinguisher and then evacuated the classroom. other students at that school, describing the trend as, quote, stupid. it's just going too far. putting the safety of others and themselves in risk. and like, it's just bad. now. no one was hurt in that incident. the superintendent of the district says that the students, that student will face disciplinary action and could be suspended for five days. the warriors draymond green this morning hardly leaving things on the court after the warriors game two implosion in minnesota. following last night's game, he made a statement on social media posted by the athletic. not an angry black man. i'm a very successful, educated black man with a great family, and i'm great at basketball. i'm great at what i do to the agenda. to try to keep making me look like an angry black man is crazy. i'm
6:07 am
sick of it. it's ridiculous. so if you were watching, you probably know what he was talking about. the refs cut draymond no slack teeing him up after this play in the second quarter. draymond gets no love after from the refs. but last night he was never ejected. the problem is if green receives two mo technicals he would then receive a one game suspension. as for the game the warriors were lifeless and the t-wolves had just too much to lose. minnesota scored the first 13, and for large chunks of the game, they led by more than 20. the final score 117, 293. the series now tied at one with game three tomorrow night at chase center. don't forget nbc sports bay area will have pregame and postgame coverage. hopefully has some hometown luck there. yeah, we can't lose in the game. you know we're already down steph right now that hamstring injury. so i could tell in the beginning of the game yesterday i was like the vibe is off. so it's just not happening today. it's kind of like when you're missing you know. vibe is off. is it
6:08 am
raining. snowing. what is so confused. and we're going to make sure they have some great weather to come back home. and we're going to give them good vibes so that they get back on track as we start out tomorrow at tipoff at 699 degrees. breezy winds though, and we are going to see a lot of sunshine and as we go throughout the evening, if you're out there and thrive city, just be prepared for those quickly dropping temperatures. we'll see going into the evenin. and today it's really warm for the inland valleys into the upper 80s in concord, 88 degrees. it will be 86. in san jose these temperatures well above normal. we should be in the low to mid 70s, but we're headed for the upper 80s, even low 90s, for the south county, into the inland north bay and up to 83 degrees in novato this afternoon in san francisco in the mid 70s. tomorrow is ao a very warm day for those outdoor activities. low to mid 80s for a lot of spots. but then on mother's day it's cooling down significantly and for the most part we'll stay in the 60s. so we'll talk about those changes coming up in a few minutes. mike
6:09 am
is a look at where we can fill up for a little bit less trying, doing my besest to find the bargains that we're starting the day in alameda county at the top here with our low of 429. that's in oakland. it's at exxon and caltech on foothill boulevard. that's the name that i'm told is the station in the north bay. we have solano county. the best we have there is 438 at the station for bond fair market in fairfield, on walters road in the middle and at the bottom here. we'll check the south bay for sunnyvale specifically. that city has its best of 449 at great gas on north matilda avenue. check gasbuddy.com. you may be going different places this friday. let's look at the roadways. though we're not having a bigger problem on the roads. we have a smooth drive right now for most of our roads, but we're seeing more traffic over at the bay bridge because there's no bart service system wide. the bart system still offline because of a computer networking issue. they aren't able to get train information. so muni ac transit, they're officially offeringutual aid. but the other transit agencie will undoubtedly be helping out. no delays reported for those
6:10 am
agencies. but as i said, as folks avoid bart, they have to take their cars, in many cases across the bridge into san francisco. here's your backup at the bay bridge. it's heavier than a normal friday. back to you. it is busy out there. thanks, mike. well, with the warm up this week, there's a hint of summer in the air. but how about your summer vacation plans? they said yet? well, you may just want to book your plane ticket sooner rather than later. we'll tell you why. and, marcus, you were talking about a tiktok trend that was dangerous. i got another one for you. stick around for that. out to the futures this morning. president trump tweeting about tariffs. wall street reacting a little bit. we'll try to figure out why they're not so impressed. and oakland roots are drawing some big crowds lately. one big bay area performer. we're going to reveal the star all set to take the field for a spectacular halftime show. you're watching today in the bay.
6:11 am
6:12 am
it takes a rebel to make something beautiful. beauty takes courage. it's an act of joy. so resist the ordinary. and embrace the wow. at floor & decor.
6:13 am
good friday morning as we take a look at what to expect in brentwood. we are going to be in the mid 50s as you're heading out the door, but take a look at the warm up going from mid 50s to low 90s this afternoon. be prepared for that change. bring that refillable water bottle and stay hydrated. today we'll talk about a cooler end of the weekend coming up. and a look at fremont. the nimitz here moves
6:14 am
well you're at speed, but you may see more traffic on the roads throughout the bay area because bart is out system wide. so folks are taking other transit agencies or taking t their vehicles. we're checking the bay bridge toll plaza with a bigger backup. and we'll give you the latest from bart coming up. well, good morning. very happy friday to you. president trump just posted, quote, 80% tariffs on china seem about right. that's another step back by the president away from the 145% he originally proposed. the president adds that's up to scott be his treasury secretary. but that's a big tell. ahead of major negotiations, chinese and american trade officials will meet this weekend. chinese exports to the united states fell 21% last month as president trump's tariffs started to bite. interestingly, the chinese say their overall exports grew. they just sent the products elsewhere. new details this morning on the department of education's plan to collect back
6:15 am
payments on student loans. the department says it will garnish the wages of more than 5.3 million americans. that will start as next month, the government says. a curious recall for those new vw id buzz vans. the government says the back seats are too big. it's designed for two passengers, so it has two seatbelts in the back, but probably can fit three people. volkswagen will add a padded bolster in the back seat as a fix, and there's a new dumb trend on tiktok late night ding dong ditching. we've taken the sound out of these posts because the music the posters used had a lot of bad words, so you can't hear the loudness of thehem cking on tse doors, but it scares a lot of homeowners. i bring it up because a virginia high schooler, allegedly a tiktok ding dong ditcher, was shot and killed by a homeowner this week. it happened around three in the morning. the homeowner arrested. it's just something parents ought to know. silicon valley still waiting on a framework from the trump administration for the use of ai
6:16 am
in health care. there are a number of very big companies in the bay area ready to sell computers and services to hospitals and doctors, but they're unsure what the rules are. and that leaves room for states to create their own rules. if the federal government fails to step up with the with these sorts of guidelines and things. i think a lot of states and california is always very forward on this sort of thing, for good or for ill. you know, the states will step up, but that, you know, creates a nightmare for providers like you because now you got 50 different rules. yes, yes. and i really do hope that the government can set a bit of a constraints at the high level on what is bad practice, especially the bad practice side of things. but the way we see it is, and the way we've seen a lot of kind of regulation on the, on the state level is seems to be heading in the right direction to say that. well, dive into that with anterior ceo abdelmahmoud the sunday morning on press here. special time this week 8 a.m. i've known abdel for a while,
6:17 am
and i admit we don't delve into it in this conversation, but he is the youngest british military infantry officer in all of british history. really? yeah. i mean, he's not anymore. but, you know, he wasn't at the time. yeah. it's a really cool story. history makers on your show? yeah, absolutely. thanks, scott. wewell,ow to a live look at sfo, where summer travel will soon be pickingg up,s many people decide to take a little time off and vacation. but now is the time to book your future travel plans. according to nerdwallet, airfare, hotel rates and car rental prices are all down compared to last year. if you're looking to save on flights, you should use your miles and points now and look at airports. partnerships. august is said to be the cheapest month to travel because many families are getting those kids back to school. if you want to take a road trip, chief consumer investigative correspondent vicky nguyen says gas prices will drop during the summer. the national average right now 314, according to triple a and the summer forecast. listen, it depends on hurricane season, which starts in june. tariffs. we also have this russian war
6:18 am
happening in ukraine. but the forecast is 305 to 335. that's actually down $0.50 on average from last year. we may see the lowest gas prices since 2021. you can see the full story on the today show. top places. people are also looking to travel in the u.s. and internationally. it's all ahead at 7:00 this morning, right after today in the bay. well, 20 for you this morning. a bay area native is coming home to perform for oakland roots and soccer fans. who? it's just me, myself and i solo ride until i die cause i got me for life. okay, that's who we're talking about there. that man there. oakland native rapper g-eazy will be performing at oakland coliseum at half time on may 24th. the rapper has been part owner of the oakland roots since 2022. and get this g-eazy not only celebrating the drop of his new album helium, but it's also his birthday on the 24th. tickets are still on sale for the game,
6:19 am
so you can go out there and celebrate. maybe they'll all sing happy birthday to him. maybe. yeah. me, myself and i. all right, let's check that forecast. it is friday finally. but boy we're going to see a warm one today. it's going to be warm. take a look at this beautiful sunrise we have starting out on this friday morning. you're welcome. we're going to see some nicer weather for our mother's day. and look at the clear view we have in dublin. bright orange as you're heading out. and don't forget those sunglasses too. but you'll want to also layer up because we're starting out with temperatures in the low 50s. but then as we take a look at the trend, we go from low 50s to low 80s at lunchtime and it continues to climb even more from there. our temperatures are well above average, not expecting to set any records, but with highs in the mid 80s and we're normally in the low 70s, it's going to really crank up quickly as we go throughout the day. with a high of 88 degrees expected in concord in
6:20 am
san francisco, mid 70s there and 87 degrees in livermore. normally we're up to about 74 degrees, so our highs in the upper 80, even low 90s in the south county, gilroy, morgan hill, we're headed for 91 degrees. it will be 90 in walnut creek and 92 in antioch, upper 80s for pleasanton and in oakland, 79 degrees near the coast. it's still very nice and comfortable with a high of 68 degrees. maybe you're going this weekend to the jazz fest that's happening there. it's going to be very nice. and in r redwood city, 82 degrees in san francisco, mid 70s downtown. and for the north bay, we're headed for 85 degrees in sonoma and near the coast. bodega bay will be 68. so we are going to see a lot of changes going into next week starting on sunday. some cooler temperatures, but spotty showers between monday and tuesday. it's not looking like a really big soaker here, but there will be more rain chances toward the end of next week, so that will moderate those
6:21 am
temperatures as well. so we're going from upper 80s to mid 80s tomorrow and then low 70s for mother's day. as the sunshine continues. more clouds, spotty rain on monday with upper 60s inland, while san francisco will be in the upper 50s. mike, you're still tracking that major commute issue. that's right. the entire system for bart is offline right now because of a networking issue. can't communicate, the computers can't communicate, and trains are run by computers asell. so that's why there's no bart service. mutual aid officially announced for muni, sfmta and ac transit, but the other agencies traditionally help out somehow. it used to mean they honored a bart ticket, a paper ticket. we don't use those anymore, so there must be something going on with the clipper card. make sure you ask if you need to. through the bart system, you go to their website bart.gov/alternatives to get other options for you. they do list other agencies. meanwhile that means more cards likely hitting the road and we have seen it earlier. bigger backup at the bay bridge toll plaza as more folks focus in towards san francisco outside of the toll plaza, we haven't seen any major issues. as far as our sensors go back to you. thanks,
6:22 am
mike. well, coming up next on today in the bay, nbc bay area investigates. overnight, more than half of your business just disappeared. yeah. correct. yeah. bay area companies left without thousands of dollars. they were promised. they say they were dumped by doge. i'm senior investigative reporter bigad

death of former supreme court justice david souter, who served on the high court for three decades. president george h.w. bush nominated him to the court in 1990. while souter was expected to align more with conservatives, he actually frequently sided with the court's liberal faction. he stepped down in 2009, was replaced by judge sonia sotomayor. justice david souter was 85 years old. small businesses from across the bay area are speaking to our investigative unit. they say they're being forced to make do without thousands of dollars worth of contracts the federal government promised. senior investigative reporter bigad shaban has been digging into that for us and has this report. yeah, we found thousands of companies and nonprofits have been dumped by doge, the federal government's newly created department of government efficiency. now, the feds say they're saving taxpayers billions, but some argue the
6:26 am
cuts have been more careless than cost effective and could end up forcing americans to pay even more in the long run. i could literally go into any solvent company tomorrow and i could cut costs, or i could increase profits, but that doesn't mean it's a smart w to do it. you have to cut costs in the right area. andrew cameron says he's out more than $300,000. after the federal government abruptly canceled his software contract, putting him on the hook to pay for staff and equipment he thought he would need for the remaining year and a half of his five year contra. he was told his termination was ordered by doge, which claims to have saved taxpayers more than $32 billion since january by canceling more than 9000 government contracts. we've learned in the bay area that includes at least 118 contracts, with cuts totaling more than $117 million. but it turns out doj's declarations of weeding out waste and scoring
6:27 am
savings aren't always accurate. including right here in the bay area, where doge was actually forced to reverse some contracts it previously canceled. so why the about face for that part of the story? you can log on to our website to check out our inepth investigation that's at nbcbayarea.com. investigations at nbc bay area news. we investigate. well, we continue to monitor that. breaking news for you this morning. bart service has been suspended and it's impacting that morning commute. and some people didn't know when they arrived at the berryessa bart station. so what are they doing next and what's the impact beyond the commute? i'll show you. and the new pope. hailing from the united states, holding his first service overnight. his first message to the world and what it all means for the future

we can tell you what it's capable of or you could find out for yourself. how we get there matters. get exceptional offers at your local audi dealer. now at 630, a major commuter alert with bart service suspended this morning. we are tracking the system wide outage. plus, the historic election of the first american pope. this morning, he divered his first mass as pontiff. we're digging into his rise at the vatican and what it means for the future of the catholic church. this is today in the bay. good friday
6:31 am
morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia and i'm marcus washington. let's get right to that. breaking news impacting thousands of people trying to get on bart this morning. today in the bay's kris sanchez live for us at berryessa station. and chris, i know you've been there for more than an hour now. any change with the lack of activity? no. as you can see here behind me, the gates are still rolled down at the berryessa bart station. so people are not even getting up onto the platform. and yet, though this outage has been announced for about an hour now, people are still showing up. the only thing i've been told you is we advise you to take alternate transportation. so that's the only thing that the bart attendant can tell these folks that are showing up find alternate transportation. the folks showing up this morning didn't seem to know about the computer system related outage until they got here. we have talked with people who were
6:32 am
headed to san francisco, to oakland, to fremont. a couple stuck around trying to wait out the outage, hoping that it would resolve quickly. but we're now going on more than an hour. and because some of them can't work from home, i mean, we're talking about federal workers and warehouse workers. the bart train outage is going to cost them a day of work on tryining o get to work. at six. i started six, and so now i have to change to see how to get to work on time. so what are you going to do, go back home? i guess because i have no idea how long this is going to take. i think the alternative method is not going to work for me. you don't want to take an uber? yeah. no. good luck. thank you. she was headed to san francisco, so that would be a pricey uber. we did see a couple of folks taking an uber. they were headed to the tesla plant in fremont. so a shorter ride. and we also saw some folks heading back to the
6:33 am
parking lot. they were going to get back in their cars and hit the road so we could see an impact on the commute as well. now our photographer, jesse, was at the pleasant hill station, where the signs that usually show information were showing out of order and then going dark. and there that line goes to millbrae and sfo. so that could be an impact for folks as well. now it is unclear how long this outage is going to last, but if one person is going to know about that, it's going to be mike inouye. and mike, you must be busy today. yeah, i can tell you the impact on it. we're scrambling for information. thank you, chris, for being out there. seeing the folks are trying. a portion of them are having to hit the road. so look at the maps here. the entire bart system is offline because communication between the computers is not functioning right now. there's an issue. we're just told by the bart media line that technicians are troubleshooting right now, so at least work is being done, but we have no idea when they're going to resolve this. and so all look atat this from san jose, where chris is also from, antioch and richmond, the east bay. everybody has the opportunity to
6:34 am
take bart into the city for lines. that's a lot of rail cars getting into the city, which can now no longer take folks into the city. many folks are hitting the road, as chris talked about. that means more traffic at the bay bridge. so we are seeing an earlier backup and a bigger backup at the toll plaza. keep in mind, even if it gets resolved this morning, folks who drove into the city, they're going to have to drive out of the city tonight, so there may be more traffic getting out of the city after work. prepare for that as you drive. meanwhile, because it is friday, we have a very light volume of traffic and it hasn't had an appreciable effect on contra costa county or the north bay. but there is more traffic across the richmond bridge and the bay bridge right now. back to you. all right. thanks for following all that. well, pope leo the 14th, celebrating his first full day as pontiff today. overnight, the pope held his first mass with cardinals in the sistine chapel. dozens of cardinals wearing their white vestments as they gathered beneath a vaulted ceiling painted by michelangelo. the first two bible readings for the mass were both in english
6:35 am
and spanish, a reflection of the pope's personal history. in his first homily, he urged cardinals to make themselves small, echoing the humble approach of predecessor pope francis. he also prayed for peace. now, this election came as such a surprise because of a belief that due to north american's dominance in so many areas around the world, cardinals would not want to invest that level of spiritual authority with the north american pope. they clearly disproved that notion yesterday. joining us live once again, to talk a little bit more about it is cesar baldomar. he is a religious studies professor, associate professor from saint mary's college. good morning. it was such a big day for the catholic church and its followers. what do you think will really be the reality now? having a pope from america? good morning. laura. good to see you. yes. this is first of all, it was definitely a surprise for everyone given his age. also, the fact that he was recently created a cardinal by francis actually as recent as 2023. so
6:36 am
he's a brand new cardinal as well. and of course, his nationality as you mentioned. but this is definitely momentous. he is known as a middle of the road person. and actually in peru, he did a great job actually serving as a mediator between the more conservative faction and the liberation theology faction of, of peru, of the clerical leadership. so he brings that middle of the road approach that could heal a very fractured and divided american catholic church to. yeah, which is a good point as well, because, you know, the american catholic church has lost a lot of followers, quite frankly, you know, because of some of the past things that have happened. pope francis was very forward thinking when it came to many issues as well. we're talking about lgbtq, perhaps women. where do you think pope leo will be? he's considered a centrist. he's definitely considered a centrist. and when it comes to social issues such as the poor migration, actually, he was also quite close to indigenous
6:37 am
communities in in peru when he served as bishop there. so he's very progressive on those. and of course, his name, leo the 14th, signals a continuity with catholic social teaching. the founder of catholic social teaching is actually pope leo the 13th, who served from 1878 to 1903. he wrote an encyclical called rerum novarum in 1891, which really emphasized the dignity of the workers, the workers rights, and also a critique of capitalism. so he is progressive when it comes to that. however, when it comes to lgbtq issues, women as deacons and you know, there's also some questions as to how he handled certain sexual abuse allegations in peru. so yes, he brings those concerns also. yeah. it'll be interesting. last hour we actually heard from san francisco's archbishop. he thinks pope leo global leadership will certainly be an asset to him. can you talk about i mean overall, catholic or not? what will his influence be on
6:38 am
the world? well, he definitely signaled that he has a cosmopolitan approach when it comes to the way he's going to handle it. of course, we saw that he only spoke in italian and english during the his announcement after election. and so i think that signals that, yes, he is trying to not necessarily get away from his nationality, but to signal that, yes, he will be a cosmopolitan pope and a pope that will be very, very concerned with the global south. i mean, he was the president of the pontifical commission for latin america, appointed by bishop by by francis to that role. and so he was also the prefect of the dicastery for bishops. so his orientation is definitely those are the pros that he brings to this role, that he does have wide ranging administrative experience within the vatican. and i think that's what the cardinals were really looking for, was somebody to really administer the vatican in a very organized way. yeah. and a unification, i would think, as well. what do you think? i mean, given the catholic church's
6:39 am
stance position throughout the world right now, what could be one of his biggest challenges? definitely with the youth. and i saw this, you know, as, as i teach undergrad and we had a discussion yesterday and many of my students expressed concerns over statements that he's made about lgbtq, what he cls homosexual lifestyles and gender ideology statements he made, to be fair to him a decade ago. and, of course, as we saw francis also change during his papacy in terms of his views. so it is conceivable that he moderates his views. but i think that's one big challenge. the other big challenge, of course, will be to heal and unite what is, you know, a very fractured church, especially in the global north. and so i think he brings that to the table, given his prior experience as a mediator in peru. all right. well, it's so interesting to see where it will go and delviving into his history as well. we thank you so much for joining us. thank you.
6:40 am
always a pleasure, laura. yeah. good to see you. good to see you. ahead this morning on the today show, lester holt and the nbc news team will have much more reaction to this historic election of the first american pope. that begins at 7:00 this morning, right after today in the bay. look over at palisades tahoe resort. so if your mother's day celebration doesn't take you there this weekend, don't worry, because there's still going to be a lot more time for you on the slopes. there is some news coming out of palisades where they're going to stay open until may 26th. see those chairs right there? i think they're calling our name. oh, yeah. let's go. meteorologist kari hall, of course, monitoring all of that. so a good time to go up there and celebrate. yeah, absolutely. a really nice weekend. and i was hearing that mammoth mountain is going to stay open until june. so we're hearing that these ski seasons are being extended a little bit with a little bit of snow very high up there at the top of the resorts there. and of course, it's nice for enjoying time at the pool during the afternoon and it's going to be

warm. temperatures in the low 70s for today and tomorrow. it turns windy and cooler by sunday. highs only in the upper 50s. if you're celebrating here around the bay area, there's the hawaiian may day festival at the alameda county fairgrounds tomorrow. starting out in the morning with mid 70s and the earlier the better, probably with this one because during the middle of the day it will be in the low 80s. just stay hydrated and make sure that you wear the sunscreen at the mill valley music festival. much different picture from saturday to sunday. we're going from mid 70s and sunny on saturday to windy and only 61 degrees on mother's day. and then there's also the may madness car show at downtown san rafael. tomorrow, starting at noon will be at 72 degrees, but then seeing highs in the upper 70s throughout the day. if your weekend plans take you along the coastline, take a look at big sur's forecast 85 today and 83 for tomorrow. but then cooler and upper 60s on sunday. mike, are you hearing about the bart trains moving yet? not yet.

kari. the system is still halted system wide because of computer networking issues. that means everybody who rides all these colored lines are not riding right now. some have ten to the roadway. we have other transit agencies. some, like muni and ac transit, have stated mutual aid helping out with the fair there, but others are likely cooperating. so bring that clipper card in to investigate at bart.gov/alternatives. also, you can get out to the roadways. some folks have taken to cars kris interviewed some of them at the berryessa station. they have to do what they got to do. the backup is bigger here at the richmond-san rafael bridge than we often see. some of it is additional traffic from bart riders, but also there was a disabled vehicle that cleared just past the toll plaza. but there you go. you see a little build through and out of richmond. there, the bay bridge toll plaza sees earlier traffic and a backup. now more folks heading into the city remember, they got to get out of the city this afternoon and evening, so that made me more traffic there. right now we're looking at this morning's closure of one lane southbound across the benicia bridge. they're scheduled lane closure there. that should clear
6:43 am
