bay area news tonight. a brush fire in solano county with fire conditions are at this hour. and how much worse they could get. also, it's just a, you know, kind of an anchor in the community is now really an anchor, a sinking ship now sitting at the bottom of the oakland estuary. what's being ne to clean up the 400 gallons of fuel leaking into the water? plus a free app helping to clean up the streets of san francisco.
7:01 pm
that app may be soon going away. we'll explain why and what's being done to keep it up and running. it's about fostering a space where friends and family can gather, celebrate, and feel a part of something greater. yeah. would you gather here a dedicated spot to watch women's sports? we're joined by two women hoping to open a first of its kind sports bar in the north bay. good evening. this is nbc bay area news tonight, i'm raj mathai. thanks for being with us on this memorial day. our gratitud to all of our military families. we're going to show you how the bay area is honoring those who lost their lives while serving our country. that's just ahead. but we start with concern. in solano county, a brush fire along i-80 in vacaville tonight. there is good news. the evacuation warning was called off for a neighborhood, and firefighters are getting the upper hand on these flames. this
7:02 pm
fire broke out around 115 this afternoon near the cherry glen exit off i-80. it ballooned to about 50 acres. cal fire issued an evacuation warning for the area around alamo creek park, but those evacuations thankfully didn't happen because fire crews stopped this fire from growing at about 49 acres. right now, this fire is 70% contained. we also know that cal fire was doing a prescribed burn along i-80 in fairfield today. crews say the fire near vacaville was not related to this prescribed burn, but it may have helped get fire crews in better position to attack the brush fire. let's bring in our meteorologist, rob mayeda. what do conditions look like right now at this evening, rob? yeah, we're looking at the conditions there. and what was burning obviously, were those grses and light brush you could see from the view from our camera. these have been ready to burn really over the last 2 to 3 weeks as those fuel moistures have dropped off into the high range for fire danger for grass
7:03 pm
fires. and the brush too, is starting to dry out. now as we move into the beginning of june, notice that we do kari an above average risk of significant wildland fire potential for the portions of the east bay hills out towards solano county, including vacaville and the interior mountains of the north bay. so after a somewhat quiet start to the fire season, things are likely to accelerate as we move forward into june. rob, what about this dramatic warm up? you know, we've been saying it's going to get a lot hotter as the days as this week progresses. what do we know in terms of fire danger there. that's a good point. that is the accelerator to fire season when you get the hot days and warm ninights. and weill see precisely that by friday. already, an extreme heat watch has been hoisted for solano county, including vacaville and much of interior northern california. we're very likely to see the same 9100 degree temperatures around the bay area as well, so it's very likely we'll see more of these types of advisories and extreme heat watches for the bay area as we head into friday and saturday. that will take these already dry fuel moistures and drop them off
7:04 pm
even more. we'll have to watch this pattern this weekend, especially as the wind and the cooling picks back up about a week from now. back to you. okay. thank you rob. we'll see you later on the program as well. now weather forecast and updates in your neighborhood are always just a click away. download our free app. it's a great resource. just scan that qr code you see on your screen to get started. you'll get those updates and breaking news alerts sent straight to your smartphone. another headline tonight a ship being used to clean the ocean is sinking in the bay. this is the kasai, a boat previously sent out to missions in the great pacific garbage patch, now causing an environmental issue of its own. the boat is sitting at the bottom of the oakland estuary. it started sinking over the weekend. the concern now an estimated 400 gallons of diesel fuel spilling into the water. here's what the boat looked like before it sank. nbc's velena jones joins us along the docks in alameda. this is all happening by the nob hill foods. we're talking about a more than
7:05 pm
100 foot long boat that has sunk in the oakland estuary. all you can see now are two large masts sticking up. now, crews were here all day trying to get a handle on this situation and look at the potential environmental impacts. we do know that some fuel was released yesterday when this boat started sinking. that's why you see those yellow booms out there to contain any potential fuel leakage. i did speak to a diver who was down there in the water all day long. he says he does not see any current leaks, but that more divers are needed to get the estimated 400 gallons of fuel out of this boat before they can officially move it. now, the big concerns right now are, of course, that environmental impact, but also securing this boat to make s sue it doesn't come crashing down. the department of fish and wildlife is invesgating this situation and investigating how exactly this boat sank in
7:06 pm
alameda. velena jones, nbc bay area news. thank you. also tonight, back in service, six days after a fire broke out at the san leandro bart station. all lines are up and running today. crews restored service to the green line. that fire broke out last tuesday, impacting the entire transit system. the green line was out of commission for nearly a week. commuters who rely on that route to get between daly city and san jose are relieved that bart trains are running again, but many tell us they are paying for expensive uber rides or walking quite a distance to get to home or work. earlier this month, bart service was suspended systemwide because of a network computer problem that lasted for hours. the ongoing issues have a lot of riders feeling skeptical about bart's infrastructure. i don't know if it's going to run like i know it came back and i'm happy, but is it going to stay back? i am not secure about my ability to be able to get to work on
7:07 pm
time. well, bart is working on a multiyea $3.5 billion project to rebuild its infrastructure, and says this month's issues are not the quality of service the agency prides itself on. well, all across the nation today, people are taking time to pause and honor our fallen service members. and throughout the bay area, we saw many reminders of what memorial day is really about. in the presidio, all branches of the military united. more than 32,000 veterans are buried at the san francisco national cemetery, with service stretching back to the civil war. every year, a gold star family is featured, and today the east bay family of peter zhu was honored. he was a west point cadet who died in an accident at the military academy in walnut creek. people honoring world war two veteran jake larson. he also happens to be a beloved tiktok sensation, sharing his stories of the war to his more than 1

million followers. there, he is known as papa jake. he stormed normandy on june 6th, 1944, also known as d-day, and at 102 years old, he's preparing to make the trip back to normandy next month for the 81st anniversary. my dad to be able to make this trip, it may be his last trip, we don't know, but it's very special for him and the entire family. and you might have just seen this story on nightly news. after more than 81 years, second lieutenant thomas kelly junior has finally been laid to rest today in his hometown of livermore. lieutenant kelly was shot down over the pacific during wld war two. his remains were finally found and identified last year. this morning, he received the hero's honor he rightfully deserves and was laid to rest next to his parents and sister in a private ceremony at saint michael's cemetery in livermore. here's an interesting story in san francisco now a popular app to
7:09 pm
report problems may be going away. it's a free app called solve sf. it was launched earlier this year by an electrical engineer living in the city. solve sf allows you to quickly report things like graffiti, trash, illegally parked cars, and other problems across san francisco. all you have to do is snap a photo and upload it. the app then uses ai to fill in the rest of the information to submit to the city. since its launch in late january, people have used the app to submit 16,000 reports. the apps creator says he was able to make this all work because the city allows him to access what's known as an api application programing interface that allows third party apps to grab and send data to the city's 311 service. but soon the city is taking that away. city administrators say the office san francisco is updating the way it's 311 service works, and it can no longer justify the staff it would need to make to maintain. excuse me, the old
7:10 pm
api. joining us now is patrick mccabe, the creator of solve sf, that app we're talking about. patrick, nice to have you on the program. all right. we already have the city. we're on 311 app to report problems. why did you start your own version? what prompted you? yeah, i started this like back in october last year. like you said, there's the city 301 app. it's. it's okay to use, but it takes like 12 steps to submit trash. my app takes about two steps so you can submit about a lot more reports. and for example, today i did 51 reports of trash and graffiti. so you just you just have a seemingly a more user friendly app here. you just do this on your spare time or is this what you do for a living? it's like my spare time. i've been focusing on it for the past few months because i think it's really important, but it's just what, you know, what i can do with my spare time? sure. and, patrick, does this make sense to you or do you agree with it? why? the city is changing its app and its and its api? yeah, i understand they're adding, like,
7:11 pm
more questions that you have to answer in order to submit a request. and so this old like interface doesn't support it. but you know, i'm hoping that we can update either the old interface or start using the new one. are you hopeful that you can reach some sort of deal or agreement with the city of san francisco that would allow you to keep your app running? that is seemingly more user friendly? yeah, i think so. you know, they're very supportive. they like the idea of having more reports. they're quite happy to understand that there could be more reports and more things to fix, and they're really supportive of how well it is and how easy it is to use. have you reached out to mayor lurie? i'm curious. a lot of people have on behalf of myself, but i haven't personally. no. how long have you lived in the city, and are you optimistic about what's happening? yeah, i've been here for almost a decade now. yeah. i think we have, you know, administration that's very interested in fixing the type of problems that you can report with. solve sf, okay. the solve sf app. we'll see if it's still
7:12 pm
viable moving forward. patrick mccabe, thanks for your time. happy memorial day. thanks for being with us tonight. thank you. up next, trying to turn a dream into a reality. we're joined by two women hoping to open a first of its kind sports bar in the north bay. also, we'll tell you about. veterinarians are dressing up as bears in order to save the life of a bear cub down in southern
7:15 pm
two women have a plan to capitalize on the rising popularity of women's sports. so much excitement for the valkyries. we're seeing it firsthand and bay fc. why not have a dedicated spot where you can watch women's sports? how about the first ever women's sports bar in the north bay? isabella woods and soledad jean-pierre met years ago while playing in the golden gate women's soccer league. they've been looking for a place to watch professional women's soccer and wnba games. imagine a place where every game, every play, every moment of women's sports is celebrated. just a few days ago, they launched a crowdfunding campaign for the 12th. that's the name of the bar that they hope to open. if successful, they'd be just one of about a dozen women's sports bars in the country. joining us now is isabella woods and soledad jean pierre. nice to see both of you on this memorial day. isabella, we'll start with
7:16 pm
you. a women's sports bar. what exactly does that mean? does that mean all the tvs are showing women's sports? and is there a difference in the menu? absolutely. yeah. so it's exactly what it means. you know, it's women's sports all day long. there's a huge amount of sports playing all of the time. and i think what's happening right now is just a huge lack of visibility. sports stuck behind a paywall. people can't find them. so we're looking to bring that visibility here to marin and give people a place to go. that could be really fun. soledad, what's your ideal customer here or who's your ideal customer? and can this business, can this business model work? honestly it's everyone children, athletes, men, everyone who support women's sports and increase visibility of women's sports. i think once we show our heart and just our passion for women's sports, it's going to be a huge success. isabella. why crowdfund? i know you just started a crowdfund movement. why not go to investors or some
7:17 pm
private families here? yeah, i mean, i think there's a huge blocker when it comes to women trying to raise capital for women owned business. you end up giving away a lot of ownership, you end up profit sharing. and i think that right now, ownersh, we need to try to keep it where it is. it's a black owned business. it's a woman owned business, and we want to make sure we can see how much we can get, how far we can get without having to give away ownership right off the bat. soledad, where and when are you thinking here? we're hoping by the end of 2025, we're still looking for a location. but if not 2026 and marin county, sonoma county, napa county. do you know exactly at least what county it's going to be? marin county hoping for downtown san rafael. that's that's going to be nice. okay. final question for you. is there a handful of other there are a handful of other women's sports in the country. have you chatted with those owners? and what did you learn? soledad, you can take it. yeah. we've chatted with
7:18 pm
ricky's. that's opening up in san francisco. everyone's super supportive. we've talked to other people as well. it's great to have ricky's who's so close, and we've just said that we're not in competition with each other. everyone's to increase women's sports visibility, so it's important that we lean on each other and support each other wherever we can. isabella. menu. anything that's different from a traditional sports bar. yeah, let's let's bring in some breakfast pizza. let's get some easy, you know, kids kid friendly meals. i want to be able to order in advance, have my kid's food ready to go so i can sit and watch the game, and they can be happy and run around with their friends. it's going to be easy, fast casual and, you know, really good eats. that's i'm bringing my family in. if it opens. keep us posted on this. we'd like to keep progress on your on your movement here. thanks to both of you. thanks so much. of course. thank you. good luck with that. let's move on. now it's going to look like a
7:19 pm
scene out of the fast and furious movies. and it's happening in pleasanton. this is called fuel fest. it's driving into the alameda county fairgrounds this saturday. it's a combination car show and music festival. two of car culture's biggest stars, cody walker and tyrese gibson from the fast and furious movies, will lend their celebrity to this event. cody walker is the brother of the late actor paul walker. we chatted with them today. people are so wonderful. they're so friendly. say things like, you know, fast is the reason why i'm into cars or your brother is the reason why i'm into cars. if you have been a fan of all things car culture and you're a car enthusiast, or even if you're not really into it, i promise you you have never experienced anything like it. i think he speaks the truth there. fuel fest will feature more than 600 cars and trucks, along with live drifting, drag racing, food and music. the event has helped raise more than 700,000 bucks for nonprofits worldwide. again saturday in pleasanton. well,
7:20 pm
how about this for out of the box thinking? a bear cub recently rescued from the woods is now being raised by humans dressed as bears. the two month-old black bear cub is at the san diego humane society's ramona wildlife center to keep him from forming bonds with people, which could jeopardize his return to the wild. staff members are dressing up in bear costumes to care for him and to play with him. you can say they used. you can see right there. they use the stuffed animal about the same size as the cub. the little bear arrived in a very fragile state but is doing much better. the wildlife center plans on releasing him in a year. let's take a live look now at the bay bridge. traffic moving smoothly on this holiday. memorial day coming to an end, and our weather is going to heat up. rob is going to rejoin us with our forecast. stay with us.
7:21 pm
it's time to get away and cash in at cache creek casino resort. to rock and to roll. to go all out or go all in with four stars and rising stars. northern california's premiecasino resort is the perfect place to do as much... or as little as you want. make your getaway now and cache in at cache creek casino resort.

summer. it also means that shark season is right about here. there's already been multipl sightings nationwide. experts say juvenile sharks gather in southern california beaches as a nursery habitat. for example, in san diego, right near la jolla, a nearly eight foot shark bumped a person at torrey pines state beach before swimming. swimming away. very rare in southern california. we have a lot of people in the water, a lot of
7:24 pm
surfers, a lot of swimmers, and we have a lot of sharks. everyone's in the water. great white sharks have recently been spotted off the coast of florida and on new york's long island they're also near the island where the calarts also near the island where the classic jaws was filmed. well, ski season back here on the west coast is officially over. skiers and boarders saying goodbye to the slopes. look at this today. closing day for palisades tahoe. it's the only tahoe resort still open. only a couple lifts were running today, but people were loving it. kirkwood, sierra at tahoe, bear valley and sugar bowl all ended their seasons last month. rob mayeda joins us now. that's pretty cool. skiing on memorial day to say goodbye to the season. it was a good ski season up there, but i think if we check another week from now, a lot of that's going to be melting off. it's been a cool holiday weekend around the bay area. highs today on par with what we've seen since saturday, mostly 60s and 70s around the bay area. i did want to show you the average highs this time of year. inland should be in the 70s to near 80 because by later
7:25 pm
this week we could see high temperatures about 20 degrees hotter than that. so get ready for the big warm up on the way. now, tomorrow morning we begin with some patchy low clouds right there around the inner bay and especially out on the coastline. but an earlier breakout to sunshine inland and temperatures starting tomorrow will be trending a little bit warmer. so morning temperatures mostly in the 50s. patchy low clouds around noon. we're already in the 70s and san jose mid to upper 70s tomorrow. 80s possible south of downtown out towards the tri-valley. similar temperatures in the north bay, but notice san francisco and oakland still 60s and 70s for now. but things are going to be changing up big time by thursday and friday. high pressure, short term, but intense high pressure with the peak temperatures there on friday. watch how quickly temperatures start to climb on thursday into friday. now we're in the 70s and 80s aund most of the bay area on thursday, but by friday, look at downtown san francisco and oakland. could be looking at widespread 80s bayside, mid 90s and reach
7:26 pm
around downtown san jose. and if you're around the tri-valley and north bay valleys, could be looking at upper 90s to temperatures above 100 degrees. it's likely the excessive and extreme heat watches we're seeing in solano county. as we get closer to this, you may see those added across the rest of the bay area as well. now, by the time we get to saturday, temperatures start to come down a little bit as the sea breeze tries to pick back up. but right now, if you're going to look for real cooling in that 7-day forecast, you may have to wait until sunday and monday. so pretty nice over the next couple of days. but thursday you'll really start to feel the heat cranking up with records in reach. i think on friday into saturday for those temperatures drop heading into next weekend. so if this unofficial start to summer didn't feel like one different. story next week, it is. it is here. thanks, rob. out of. yes, chef. at nine. america's got talent simon and terry crews look back at the most memorable auditions before

the season premiere, which is tomorrow. then our late news, live and local at 11. and speaking of, here's what's coming up on our 11:00 news. a copper thief caught in the act in the south bay. but not before leaving a neighborhood in the dark. that's going to do it for us here at 7:00, for everyone here at nbc bay area, including our photojournalist ethan keefer. thanks for joining us. we hope you enjoy your evening. we hope you enjoy the rest of this memorial day. we'll see you at 11.
