the area. but how much longer are we going to roast? we're tracking the thermometer and elevated fire risk. plus festival frustration. visa issues force a mexican band to
5:01 pm
cancel their local performance. we'll hear from fans at la honda festival about the last minute change. and a fire breaks out in a palo alto home. see that intense firefight and what crews found inside the home? saturday night on the news at five starts right now. good evening. thanks for joining us. i'm chris karma. gia and garvin are off tonight. we begin with a hot start to the weekend. parts of the bay area under a heat advisory right now. take a live look outside san jose, walnut creek and richmond where temperatures reached into the 90s. today, it seems the heat has peaked a little bit and the temperatures are starting to drop. but this saturday night, are we going to swelter? and how about sunday? let's turn to meteorologist rob mayeda. what do you think? technically it's cooler, but you know, upper 90s that's it's still cooler. no, it's just mathematical change we're seeing right now outside. we still got the heat advisory up for at least almost the next three hours. and the reason why we're still up to 98 degrees in
5:02 pm
walnut creek. notice the humidity. only 22%. the breeze is starting to pick up, and thanks to the hot, dry and warm weather over the last couple of days, the fuel moistures for grasses and brush have really dropped off. now, transitioning to above average risk for significant wildfire activity as we head into june. so look at the temperatures outside. we got 90s and hundreds inland today, dry conditions in those same locations. and now the afternoon breezes are starting to pick up. now that is annshore wind leading to that very slight cooling. we'll get the ocean air conditioning recharged tomorrow morning as the low clouds and fog return. that will lead to highs tomorrow, dropping back into the 70s and 80s inland so cooling relief is just in sight. another interesting aspect of the forecast isn't meteorology, but possibly astronomy and northern lights viewing potential for tomorrow night. we'll let you know if the weather will cooperate for that in our forecast coming up in a few minutes. all right, rob, thanks very much. we look forward to the free air conditioning. today's heat did not stop people from their saturday plans. in the north

bay, people are out celebrating pride. nbc bay area's christie smith shows us how they beat the heat, and how fire crews are preparing for firire seaso this is a life saver. cold water was a refreshing treat as people came to celebrate at the sonoma county pride parade and festival, where temperatures were rising last year, about 20,000 people came to enjoy it and they were expecting about the same. this year we have some cooling stations, we have some some tents set up with fans and seats for our older folks, and then those that can walk down to the plaza. the mall right down the street. we have tables and chairs set up inside. a heat advisory was extended today, but mostly for the upper elevations like the north bay hills and mountains. regardless of whether you're in it or not, it's hot. paul lowenthal is division chief fire marshal for the santa rosa fire department. he says the heat is a reminder to stay hydrated and take precautions, and the weather has another impact. a really wet winter prompted significant growth in vegetation. then there was a
5:04 pm
quick transition to dry spring and warm, windy conditions. our concern is with the temperatures and weather that we're experiencing now, it's just going to continue to dry out our fuels and increase the fire danger risk, especially here locally. santa rosa annually declares the start and stop of their local fire season, which begins on monday. this year. it's primarily tied to our ordinances, one of which is our weed abatement ordinance, where we want those seasonal grasses cut down to four inches in height throughout our entire wildland urban interface and other parts of the city. but that's really what kick starts, that suspends pile burning throughout our community. and we'll also be rolling out our vegetation management defensible space inspections this season as well. one neighbor who doesn't live in the city, says neighbors in her area are on top of things, too. homeowners have really done a good job of cleaning things up, and besides being more fireproof, it looks a lot better. and tomorrow at the sonoma county fairgrounds, there's an opportunity for neighbors to learn more at a

wiwildfire a earthquake expo. the event will have a lot of different agencies, booths, talks really an opportunity for community members to come here, get information, whether it's about evacuation checklists, go bags. christie smith, nbc bay area news. yeah, get that go bag together this weekend. hey, also, keep tabs on the weather while you're on the go. just download our free nbc bay area weather app. all you have to do is scan the qr code on your screen right now, and our team will send you push alerts to keep you one step ahead of our sometimes wild microclimate weather. new at five. an investigation is underway into that fire destroying a palo alto home. firefighters say just after nine this morning, they raced to stockton place, finding that house, a garage and a truck all on fire. crews told us they faced several challenges putting the fire out, including fuel leaking from the truck, driving flames into the road. witnessess described some intense moments. i was watering my front garden
5:06 pm
here and all of a sudden i heard explosions. and then i looked down the street and next thing you know, there's flames shooting out of the black smoke and everything, he said. explosions. fire crews moved fast and put the fire out so it didn't spread to other homes. investigators say the person who lives in that burned out home escaped, but a dozen cats and dogs did not. they all died. it's not clear what ignited the fire. still no word on what caused a cement truck? a runaway cement truck crash on the peninsula. a couple homes are now fenced off in daly city after crews tried to stabilize those houses and remove the runaway truck. all right. here's how it looked yesterday. the crash displaced 14 people, but no one was hurt. neighbors told us the truck was at a work site up shipley avenue when it started rolling downhill, and then collided with the houses. we are still waiting on details from officials about what happened. the official record, that is the truck's owner, half moon bay building and garden,
5:07 pm
had no comment. yesterday we talked to a family who lived in one of the smashed homes. they say the structural damage is so severe they are expecting 3 to 6 months until they can move back in. fans of a popular mexican band are upset and angry tonight that tomorrow's performance in napa is canceled. that's grupo firme, the band announced last night they cannot appear sunday at la honda festival because their visas are still in administrative processing. the group is extremely popular, with more than 5 million followers on instagram and tiktok. a few fans told us they were really looking forward to the performance this weekend. many see what happened as political, especially since other latino performers have had their visas revoked too. some ticket holders are taking it in stride, though. it's disappointing because they were one of the groups that came to
5:08 pm
see the most and we were more amped for it. but you know what? they have a great lineup. either way, we'll make the best out of it and it's definitely going to be an event you will regret not coming to. tito double p will replace grupo firme tomorrow. la onda organizers say they will not give disappointed fans refunds, even though the state says promoters are supposed to give people their money back when they replace a show. instead, organizers say artist lineups can change and that is part of their ticket terms and conditions. he is going the distance barefoo to help children in need. a bay area man is walking 100 miles and there he is 100 miles barefoot to raise awareness and money for immigrant children. patrick mcconnell and other activists who are joining him for at least part of the journey, kicked off the walk at ocean beach this morning. mcconnell is committed to walking barefoot all the way to santa cruz. the jogging stroller he has pushing there? yeah, he thinks everything in there is going to help him
5:09 pm
complete the 100 mile trip. mcconnell has partnered with the young center and raised $50,000 to provide legal help to immigrant kids who are facing deportation hearings. i feel really loved and supporteded in this process, and it's just been really cool to see who's shown up and who's contributed. people have contributed in very creative ways beyond donating. and yeah, it's just been really sweet. that's been a goal of mine to bring people together, and it's been so fun to see that actually happen in real time. perhaps you noticed mcconnell's long blond hair? well, after the walk, he says he is donating his hair to wigs for kids, a first of its kind health survey kicked off in the south bay. it's aimed at curbing cancer risk in the filipino population. the national nonprofit lead filipino and the stanford cancer institute teamed up to conduct the first ever silicon valley filipino cancer survey today at a san jose event, organizers said. the survey found there's a lot of work ahead, especially in cancer education. our people are delaying necessary medical
5:10 pm
screenings. we need to do more around hpv education, and behind these stats are our grandparents, our siblings, our parents, our brothers and sisters who are waiting too long to get the care they need. lead filipino hopes the survey encourages the state and federal governments to collect more health care data on the filipino population. california is home to the country's largest filipino population. more than 150,000 filipinos call santa clara county home. coming up, sensing the shake, bay area scientists using fiber cables to detect earthquakes. see how it could help alert you faster. plus, a life saving donation. a drives collecting bone marrow. meet the local patient who will benefit, and maybe you can help. hey, rob. hey, there. still feeling very summerlike at this hour around walnut creek. 98 degrees. this time tomorrow. cooling changes on the way back into the 70s and 80s. we'll give you the timeline on that cooling trend, and we come right back. ahead for us. our team goes inside taiwan's war preparations

hoping to find a match for a four year old boy. the san jose bone marrow donor drive is organized by recruits at the santa clara county justice training center. four year old kenji lam was there too, hanging
5:13 pm
out with recruits and deputies. kenji has a rare blood disorder, and so far no one in the national registry is a match for the life saving bone marrow he needs. the president of officers give hope says he knows from personal experience how important it is to give pients like kenji hope. my youngest daughter had a bonearrow transplant when she was eight years old. it was a donor on the registry that actually saved her life. but even before that, officers give hope. we've been working with public safety agencies across california for the past 25 years, adding over 23,000 people to the registry. every single person added is hope for a patient that desperately needs hope. all right, so you probably missed the drive today, but you can still help. you can contact the national bone marrow registry and they will send a kit to your home. how easy is that? new at five a small earthquake rattled lake county today. the 3.4 quake shook around 1030 this morning near the geysers, about three miles north of cobb. no reports
5:14 pm
of damage or injuries into our newsroom. it's the second quake in our region in two days. a 3.2 shook the east bay yesterday, centered just south of concord. here's at lawrence livermore labs. say they figured out how to turn fiber optic cables into detailed earthquake sensors. check this out. the researchers recently hooked this box, known as an interrogator, to an existing fiber optic line running from san francisco to sunnyvale. well, two weeks ago, their experiment put to the test a 3.9 magnitude quake hit dublin. well, the researchers say they measured the quake in much greater detail than ever before. how much better? they say 1000 times better than current seismometers. detecting quakes. distributed sensing is just a game changer. it's going to allow us to see the entire wave field, and we hope to utilize existing fibers in structures like buildings and bridges, and to be able to listen in on vibrations, kind of
5:15 pm
like a tuning fork to do stability and health monitoring. so if a structure is damaged due to aging or from large earthqke, we should be able to detect that and isolate exactly where the damage has occurred. to quote bill nye, science. researchers also say this highly sensitive new way of detecting earthquakes could help improve our early warning system. on top of that leap forward, they say, the new tech can sense earthquake damage at incredible speeds and potentially uncover smaller, unknown fault lines. all right, look up. californians could see a chance to see the northern lights this weekend. these are photos from the last time the northern lights were visible in the bay area. beautiful. well, noah is forecasting a severe geomagnetic storm again. science. all right. geomagnetic storm tomorrow night into early monday morning. scientists say it comes after a burst of solar material and magnetic energy exploded off the sun last night. science right.
5:16 pm
researchers expect a majority of the northern u.s. to see the aurora borealis, including parts of northern california. all right, so what do you need to do here? well, if you want to see the northern lights, or at least try to see them, it's best to travel north and get away from city lights. the big question is, will the weather cooperate? weather permitting. yeah. what do you think? right now it's looking pretty good. yeah. that's good. we'll take you into the view there again, where the upper atmosphere acts a bit like a neon tube. you get the energy away from the sun. and right now, space weather prediction center forecasting a g for severe geomagnetic storm. so let's quantify what that means. this is where we get radio blackouts at times. we saw a few of those today. then as the higher energy particles arrive tomorrow, his is where the aurora borealis or the northern lights are not as northern as they typically are at a kp 7 or 8. that would drop them down in the pacific northwest. and like we saw may last year and october of last year, we call it the android or iphone aurora effect.
5:17 pm
if you have a ten second exposure on those smartphones or cameras, you may be able to gather up enough light to spot some of the aurora up on the northern horizon. provided the weather is cooperating. we'll be watching those skies closely as we head into tomorrow night. right now, the big headline, obviously, is still the heat. not as bad in san jose right now at 86 degrees, but still plenty hot in walnut creek, 98 degrees 80 around san rafael and into san francisco looking at sunshine and 66 degrees. so allergy forecast has improved. the heat is really helped to bring down some of those pollen levels for all of trees and eucalyptus grass pollen now is low. that is one benefit at least of the hot days. still seeing the 90s and hundreds inland. technically cooler but not sensibly cooler outside. you get the onshore winds picking up, but without the low clouds. it's like the fan is on without the coolant, and the coolant here is still offshore. it will return to the coast as we head through tonight and tomorrow morning. patchy areas of fog and very likely some drizzle to start the day there on the coast with some patchy low clouds
5:18 pm
inland back into the sunshine for the afternoon. so the combination of the low c clouds returning, the marine layer deepening up, we'll have a big impact on our daytime highs tomorrow, so notice moving forward into mid afternoon. highs tomorrow 70s and 80s. that's almost a 15 to 20 degree drop from the heat advisory numbers we've been seeing today. now as we head through the next 24 hours cloud cover forecast for the northern lights as we head into sunday night and monday right now doesn't look so good on the coast. patchy low clouds around the north side of the bay, but should see mostly clear skies inland as temperatures rebound slightly tuesday, wednesday and thursday back into the mid to upper 80s inland. but it does not look like we'll see a return of 90s and 100. so a little bit warmer, but not as hot as the l last couple of days and no major changes in the weather. ongoing chances of severe thunderstorms and mostly 80s inland as we go through the week. so san francisco will be cooler tomorrow as the breezes pick up, but chances of hitting 70 a couple times during the week.
5:19 pm
we'll get that coming into tuesday again on thursday. and for the valleys warmest temperatures of the week in that tuesday through thursday time frame, we'll see some mid to upper 80s returning inland as opposed to the upper 90s and hundreds we've had over the last couple of days. so as we move into june, trending just a little bit cooler inland over the next seven days, what i took away from that most was the allergy forecast. thank you. it's been a rough three weeks. finally, rob, thanks very much. up next, not one but two vibrant festivals in the city of san francisco. see the communities enjoying the warm weather and why one group considers their special celebration motto special.
