"early today" starts right now. good morning. i'm frances rivera. the suspect in the boulder, colorado fire attack is now charged with attempted murder and a hate crime. investigators say 45-year-old mohamed sabry soliman has contested to the attack, claiming he planned it for more than a year. 12 people were injured. morgan chesky has the story. >> reporter: this new video appears to show thmoment a man unleashed a fiery attack on a peaceful pro-israel rally. the man hurling molotov cocktails and using a makeshift flamethrower to set multiple people on fire now facing hate crime and attempted murder charges. >> you see the fire under the legs. and trying to pull friends out of the fire. this is what stuck in my head.

>> reporter: officials say at least 12 people were injured. witnesses say they heard the man shout "free palestine." officials releasing chilling new details on how they say 45-year-old egyptian national mohamed soliman plotted the attack. >> mr. soliman stated that he had been planning this attack for a year. and he acted because he hated what he called the zionist group. >> reporter: according to an affidavit, he told investigators he posed as a gardener to get as close as possible to the group. >> he said he previously tried to purchase a firearm but resorted to the molotov cocktails when he could not purchase a gun. because he was not a legal citizen. >> reporter: officials say he threw two molotov cocktails but had stashed 16 more. >> he said he wanted them all to die. he had no regrets, and he would go back and do it again. >> reporter: they said he wore a backpack sprayer, which he filled with gasoline, spraying

gas on himself, he said, because he had planned on dying. the department of homeland security says he overstayed a tourist visa and had applied for asylum. president trump posting, this yet another example of why we must keep our borders secure. the 12 victims range in age from 52 to 88 years old. one, a holocaust survivor. now fighting to recover from severe burns. >> she knows what it was like to be a child as a refugee and goes around telling stories, not just to fight anti-semitism, but to stop the atread of other people who are also looking for a better future in this community. >> reporter: now despite the federal hate crime and state charges that have been filed against the 45-year-old soliman, officials say the investigation is still very much beginning. they want to dig into additional information that's recovered as they continue to build their

case and potentially add additional charges. in san diego, i.c.e. agents set off flashbang grenades to disperse protesters at a restaurant. i.c.e. arrested four who were allegedly in the u.s. without proper documentation. the arrest warrant made no mention of any criminal history. >> as far as we know, they're a busboy, dishwasher or cook. and the only crime is working hard in the wrong place. >> also outrage in massachusetts after a 18-year-old high school junior was arrested on his way to volleyball practice. dhs says they did not initially intend to apprehend him but found out he was in the u.s. illegally while looking for his undocumented father. let's turn now to the trump administration and the ongoing trade negotiations. the white house says president trump and chinese president xi will likely speak this week. this comes after china and the u.s. have each accused one another of breaching the geneva trade agreement. nbc's alice barr joins me now. what more do we know about these high-stakes talks?

>> reporter: frances, good morning. we can see from public comments that the negotiations have hit some roadblocks. the u.s. accused china of slow walking exports of critical minerals. and china called out washington for issuing a warning against using chinese chips. the white house has said the two leaders will likely talk soon but have not given any official timing. both counties are feeling the effects of tariffs with some ices rising here at home. while overnight, a private survey showed that last month china's manufacturing shrank at the fastest pace since september 2022. but president trump is pressing forward with his trade policies, vowing to double tariffs on steel and aluminum to 50%, taking effect tomorrow. the european union is preparing counter measures, saying that move undermines their ongoing negotiations. meanwhile, on capitol hill, president trump is urging senate republicans to pass his one big beautiful bill act.

forced labor. >> the character of the person that i know is someone that was jovial, loved music. >> combs has pleaded not guilty to all charges. a san antonio man is in custody, accused of shooting and killing jonathan joss, the voice actor best known as john red corn from the king of the hill. his neighbor was charged with murder in the sunday night shooting. in a statement, joss' husband credited the actor with saving his life by pushing him out of the way when the shooting happened. joss also appeared on parks and recreation and tulsa king. he was 59 years old. tourists in sicily sent running after europe's most active volcano erupted, sending clouds of smoke and ash several miles into the air. officials say mt. aetna erupted when part of the southeast crater collapsed, resulting in hot lava flow. though the activity posed no

danger to thpopulation. claudio lavanga is in rome with the latest. good morning, claudio. >> reporter: good morning, frances. that's right. the eruption posed no danger to the population, but it certainly did to the tourists climbing mt. aetna, who were warned not to. this was the 14th erupting phase of the volcano in recent months but it was the strongest and moist spectacular. it's not unlikely to see or unusual to see large plumes of smoke coming out of the mouth of mt. aetna. i've seen it in the past. it's spectacular. but this was completely different, because, as you mentioned, one of the craters collapsed, sending this deadly combination of ash, rocks and gases just rolling down the mountain, sending those tourists running for their lives. just to give you a sense of how

dangerous this was, this kind of volcanic activity is called pyroclastic fl. it's the same that buried pompeii. this time fortunately people lived to tell their stories through video on social media. >> thank you. the department of homeland security is pushing back against reuters. they were told that david richardson, the active head of fema said he was unaware there was a hurricane season. the dhs says the reporting falsely frames a joke as policy. adding that fema is laser focussed on disaster response. back here at home, the plains are facing a risk of severe weather. let's turn to angie lassman who is tracking that trouble for us. >> we've got flood alerts already up this morning for 9

these set to include film and tv as well as casting, production, marketing, publicity and finance. and while the cuts will be global, the majority are set to focus on the los angeles area. and this comes as part of broader restructuring plans at the house of mouse. back in 2023, ceo bob iger said that he'd be cutting 7,000 jobs and making $5.5 billion worth of cost savings. just in march, the company laid off around 200 staff at abc news and its business in disney entertainment division. nonetheless, the company continues to perform well, reporting better than expected second quarter earnings. the stock is up 21%, just dipping slightly on this announcement on monday. now elsewhere, billionaire bill gates has provided more detail on how he plans to give away his more than $200 billion fortune. this likely to center on affecting challenges in africa, primarily around health and
