right now at 11. president trump resurrecting his travel ban, citing national security concerns. now, it is similar to the proclamation he enacted during his first term in office. the executive order will coming into the united states from 12 different countries. take a look at the list. targeting african, asian and middle eastern countries. nbc's jococelyn moran joins us from sfo this evening with the new details. jocelyn. well, this is different, but it is marking the return of one of the most divisive policies from the president's first term, that 2017 ban. now with this, there is concern for families who live in the bay area, who have relatives who want to visit them from these countries. this is frustrating and disappointing. it's unfortunately not

surprising. tonight, president trump signing a proclamation banning nationals from 12 countries from entering the united states. those countries include afghaniststan, burma, chad, republic of congo, equatorial guinea, eritrea, haiti, iran, libya, somalia, sudan and yemen. seven of those countries, according to the proclamation, regularly declined to accept the return of their nationals or had visa overstay rates. the administration deemed, quote, unacceptable. others were included for inadequate screening and vetting measures in additional seven countries came under partial travel restrictions. those include burundi, cuba, laos, sierra leone, togo, turkmenistan and venezuela. very simply, we cannot have open migration from any country where we cannot safely and reliably vet and screen those who seek to enter the united states. in a video the white house shared wednesday night, the president began the message by pointing to recent violence in colorado, where a man injured demonstrators in

what city officials called an anti-semitic attack. the suspect is from egypt. egypt is not on the list of countries under the newly announced travel bans. zahra billoo, the executive director of care in the bay area, says the concern is that the trump administration is targeting countries based on political motivations. we have a very robust vetting system for all indiduals who seek to travel to the united states. the impact will be broad, and our concern is that people will not be able to see their relatives. the proclamation does include exemptions for any lawful permanent resident of the u.s, recipients of afghan special immigrant visas, diplomatic sas, immediate family member immigrant visas, visas for, quote, ethnic and religious minorities in iran, adoptions, and dual nationals traveling on passports from unrestricted countries. as we know, the world cup is going to be in the u.s. next year, including matches

here in the bay area. athletes who are traveling to the u.s. for the olympics or the world cup are part of those exemptions. raj, jess. so, jason, let me ask you this. is there a marker or a way for countries to get off of this banned list? jess, president trump said the list can be revised based on whether, quote, material improvements are made. at the same time, countries other countries could also be added to this list as well. okay. thank you very much. also tonight, the battle continues between president trump and harvard. the president signing an executive order denying visas for any foreign students trying to attend harvard. the administration tried late last month to revoke harvard's ability to enroll foreign students, but that was swiftly blocked by a federal judge. in today's proclamation, mr. trump said harvard, quote, failed to present sufficient information about its foreign students to the federal government. end quote harvard says it will fight

to protect its international students. demonstrators came together in san francisco tonight demanding an end to deportations. dozens rallied outside the ice building on sansom street, urging people who've been detained to be returned to their families. supervisor jackie fielder says 15 people who showed up for appointments in san francisco today were detained, including a three-year-old and several other children. she claims they have been marked for imm deportation as soon as tomorrow, and is calling for increased funding in the city for immigration defense. now, all of this comes after ice made the most immigrant arrests in history yesterday. a ice spokesperson confirms agents detained more than 2200 people. sources also confirmed to nbc news that hundreds of those arrested had been enrolled in ice's alternative to detention program. that program releases undocumented immigrants who are deemed not to be threats, and keeps track of them through geolocating programs and periodic check ins. immigration

attorneys across the country told nbc that some of their clients in that program were sent a mass text asking them to show up for early check ins, only to be arrested when they arrived. and that's exactly what immigration advocates say happened in san jose today. we spotted federal agents behind the chavez market on blossom hill road. they were wearing masks and detaining multiple people. the rapid response network claims undocumented migrants were called to routine monitoring meetings at a nearby immigration office. when they arrived, the group says the feds were waiting to detain them. it's cruel, it's cruel, and these are people who are doing what is asked of them and they're actually walking themselves in. the agency issued a statement saying those arrested today had orders of removal from an immigration judge. the chavez market actually closed their doors today, they said, to protect their customers. and in the east bay, a big turnout to support a

livermore father detained by ice last week. also, after showing up for a routine appointment at the immigration offices in san francisco. now hundreds of people are gathering calling for his release. here's nbc bay area's alyssa goard. separating families, the livermore community tonight holding a rally calling for miguel angel lopez to be released from immigration custody. last week, my husband w to a immigration office to report like he has been for the past 17 years. and while he was in there, he was detained by ice. miguel was among the several people who were detained by ice last week at bay area immigration courts. the trump administration has continued ramping up its detention efforts, saying it's focused on securing america's borders and ensuring that immigration laws are enforced. we've been fighting this for so many years. we spent so much money, we've gone everywhere we had to, and then all of a sudden he's gone. he's now being held

at a detention center near bakersfield. miguel is from mexico. his family says he's been in the u.s. for 27 years, where he works at wente winery and is the father to three children, including one current granada high school student. me and other teachers and other people in the community just wanted to step up and help them. teachers and others organized tonight's event, trying to bring attention to the lopez family's case. miguel needs to come home. this is where he belongs. he's been here most of his life. i want somebody from immigration to hear his case and know that he he should get that opportunity to be here. legal, not illegal. several hundred people from livermore and around the tri-valley showed up to this rally, many of them now saying they plan on contacting their representatives, asking for their help in getting miguel's release. a lot of people question why did it take him so long? why is this taking so long? well, because our system is broken. he has been trying. we reached out to ice for

comment but have not heard back. in livermore. alyssa goard, nbc bay area news. some other headlines tonight. an update in san mateo after this huge oak tree fell onto two cars. this is outside a plant nursery on ninth avenue, not far from el camino. we're told a man and his young child were inside one of those cars. you can see the scope of that tree there from our chopper overhead. the child was rushed to the hospital. but there is good news. that child is expected to be okay. this happened this afternoon. a man who works nearby says it was just a matter of time before that oak tree fell. i worked down the street. i told my brother it was a matter of time before the tree fell, because it was leaning so much. i don't know why the city didn't do anything before. and those branches are heavy. he shared this vid with us that he took on the oak tree on may 1st. you can see how far that tree was leaning. the search is on for a man. police say sexually

assaulted two hikers in the south bay today. happened this morning on los gatos creek trail in san jose. investigators say the man attacked two women as they just walked on that trail. police released this photograph. they're looking for a man in his 30s with a thin build, last seen wearing a black hoodie with a green riding on it and blue jeans. now, officers did go door to door in the area, talking to neighbors, looking for any insight. if you saw anything or know anything, or recognize the person in that photo, you should call sjpd. okay, where's the party tonight? well, at the nintendo store, it's a big night for gamers. look at this. people were lined up for hours waiting to get the switch. two people who showed up early had the chance to be among the first people to buy the new gaming console. here it is. the doors open and the people rushed in. the switch two is a hot commodity, a major upgrade from the last switch. it has a new high def screen, better processing powers. our crew was there as the first customers left the store for a switch to from the san francisco nintendo

store. let's go play some mario kart world! i'm really tired right now, and i need i don't think i'm going to sleep at all tonight, so they're going to play all night. the switch two is going for about 500 bucks. san mateo county sheriff has appointed a new assistant sheriff. that announcement comes just one day before county leaders will hold a special meeting to start t process of removing the embattled sheriff. sunday. enriquez will replace former assistant sheriff ryan monahan, who was dismissed by sheriff corpus last year. monahan later filed a lawsuit against the county, claiming he lost his job because of retaliation. now, tomorrow, the board of supervisors will hold a special meeting to begin the process of removing sheriff corpus from office. voters gave them that power when they passed measure a back in march. the sheriff continues to deny allegations found in an independent audit revealing harassment, bullying and retaliation. if successful, san mateo would be the first

county in the state to remove an elected sheriff. could a major tech upgrade be in the future for sfpd? tonight, san francisco police commissioners considered an offer from a billionaire to fund surveillance efforts. here are the details. chris larsen is a tech executive well known in the city. he's also an angel investor who helped develop blockchain software ripple. he's a community fund. larsen is now offering sfpd about $9.5 million to upgrade its crime fighting technology. it includes a donation of a new facility to be used for the department's real-time investigation center. you know, we had a lot of results, but, you know, the police have very little equipment still. i mean, this is just the beginning. it's just a handful of drones. i've done a ton with very little. this donation will really let them step up their their results. and

we think that will be a huge improvement for the city. so here's what happened tonight. the police commission approved an ordinance to accept the donation. the board of supervisors will have the final say. meanwhile, san francisco city workers are pushing back cuts in mayor lurie's budget. it calls to eliminate more than 1400 posions in the city office, though most of those positions are reportedly calls e nonprofit grants and contracts. you see the picketers today. they're worried about cuts to services. the mayor argues it's a solid plan to address a major financial problem. he says it prioritizes public safety, clean streets, avoiding cuts to sworn officers, and preserves funding for public safety. we're back in 60s. ahead, a wrongful death suit moving forward against bart. why the family of a woman pushed onto an oncoming train says the agency isn't doing enough to keep people safe. and maybe david versus goliath here. south bay taco shop going up

be pushing out small businesses. a longtime s taqueria says it could be forced out if plans to build a new chick-fil-a are approved. here's nbc's marianne favro. this family owned business has been here at this location in san jose for more than 20 years. but if you walk with me, i'll show you why the owner is concerned. he says that if plans go forward to build a chick fil a here, that it could displace his business. known for their tasty tacos and el paso taqueria, eduardo on race street has established a loyal customer base over the last two decades. this restaurant means everything to

us. me and my family. owner luis martinez says he's worried he may be forced to relocate his restaurant if the city allows a chick-fil-a restaurant to be built on san carlos street, just down the block from him. he says the plans include tearing down the building his restaurant is in to build a parking lot for the chick fil a restaurant. that's really devastating. it's really sad for us. like i said, we've been here so many years and worked so hard. it was it was really sad for us. martinez is hoping customers will support him by signing an online petition posted at his register. so far, more than 2700 people have signed it. catalyzed silicon valley also has concerns about the development on west san carlos street. while the new restaurant does not come with a drive thru. executive director alex shaw says it will attract a lot more cars to the area, and he says the proposed development doesn't meet the city's housing

needs. we have this massive housing shortage here in silicon valley, so that's what we really need for this site. and at the end of the day, a chick fil a on this site would be a step backwards. we reached out to the project developer but have not received a response. if approved, the chick fil a restaurant would also force sharper cuts by belen to move. the owner tells us she's been at this location more than 30 years. a planning directors meeting is set for june 11th, but martinez says he's worried this will be an uphill battle. we're not able to compete with a big chain like this in san jose. marianne favro, nbc bay area news. a judge has ruled that the wrongful death lawsuit, brought by a family of a woman pushed and killed at a bart station, can move forward. investigators say a man pushed 74 year old corazon dandan in front of a train at the powell street station last july. her surviving nephew and six siblings filed a lawsuit accusing bart of failing

to address safety issues for years. they claim the suspect was known to bart police, but was still able to fare, jump and get on to that platform in the south bay. the vta and one of its workers unions has finally reached a deal. this comes three months after that strike halted service for thousands of riders. a judge ordered workers back to work after two weeks. last night, the union approved a new contract with vta. it includes a 14% raise over four years, better dental benefits and updated workplace policies. union says nearly 690 members approved the new deal. some 300 voted against it. okay, it's a short window to fish for salmon. ocean salmon season opens this weekend. for the first time in two years. even though numbers are lower than average, the california department of fish and wildlife says the state is seeing a rebound in the number of chinook salmon this year. wildlife officials are opening the recreational fishing period for just two days this satury

and this sunday, so expect a lot of fishermen and expect long time wait times at your boat launches. jeff is with us now. it should be nice on the water this weekend because a lot of people are excited about this. yeah, it's going to be beautiful. we're really settling into a nice pattern out here across the bay area. you can see it right now on the satellite radar picture on this wide view. storm track is way off to the north. and that's because of this area of high pressure here in the pacific. so we're going to stay dry and warm, especially across the inland valleys. but different here is some fog developing for tomorrow morning. let me show you more details on that in your microclimate forecast and on your thursday. i almost said friday, but not quite there yet. we're going to start it off here with quite a bit in the way of low clouds he around five, six and 7:00 in the morning. you'll notice this green too. this is the chance of some drizzle near the coastline. also the north bay a little bit here for the peninsula, and it's going to be slow to clear back i think by 10:00 in the morning. east bay

and south bay certainly getting into sunshine, but we'll likely see some of that fog linger around napa, the bay and at the coast. and it's going to be one of those afternoons where it just hangs on at our beaches. but everywhere else will get in on that sunshine. so let's take you to those morning temperatures. we're going to begin here down in the 50s for the morning. this is widespread. so it's very similar similar throughout the bay area, jacketr a little bit, then by the afternoon no need for jacket i shorts t shirt. you're going to be good to go in the south bay temperatures here in the 80s. it's just going to be one of those days where you want to be outside. enjoying it out here to the east bay 80 in martinez, 75 hayward. go to pleasanton. we're at 84 now up against the coastline where we got that foggy breeze and some limited sunshine. only 63 here in half moon bay, but down to palo alto. we're at 78 up here to san

francisco, 50s and 60s. and we're going to get a breeze here out of the southwest at 16 and some gusts that could be around 25. so you're going to feel that chchill whe the wind kicks up. o jacket weather again all day long right here across wine country looking perfect. perfect with temperatures in the upper 70s. so how about the weekend. we'll still see this area of high pressure keeping warm weather, especially through the inland valleys, so no problem there. the other thing that we're watching is another system developing here in southern california now looks like on the eastern side of the storm, we'll see some thunderstorms for the sierra. and just to the north of us and on the western side of that storm, we'll be dry. so right now, looks like the best chance of thunderstorms would be over the sierra with about a quarter inch in tahoe. nothing for us, but we'll keep a close watch on it right here on that 7-day forecast. a familiar pattern for june in san francisco, 60s for highs, 50s for lows, morning fog, afternoon sun and for the inland valleys.

the state's gas tax will go up another $0.02 a gallon. that means we'll all pay a total of $0.62 in state tax for every gallon of gas. diesel will increase by $0.01. jet fuel and aviation gas will stay about the same. this is all part of an adjustment linked to the consumer price index. this might not be the only increase this year. the state's air resources board is hoping bart's it will

start its new low carbon emission rules this summer. controversially, they acknowledged it could take prices. it could make prices jump, but they didn't analyze just how much that increase could be. just today at the state senate, democrats blocked a bill by california republicans to pause those new clean air standards. president trump has ordered an investigation into what he calls a white house coverup. the president has directed his administration to investigate joe biden's actions as president. the order claims that aides helped hide biden's cognitive decline. it also cast doubts on the legitimacy of his use of the autopen to sign pardons and other documents. mr. biden responding today calling it a distraction, quote, let me be clear i made the decisions during my presidency. i made the decisions about the pardons, executive orders, legislation and proclamations. any suggestion that i didn't is ridiculous and false. okay. up next, we're going to check in with the giants. a major roster
