county's embattled sheriff. the new steps happening today by county leaders plus. but we will not allow people to enter our country who wish to do us harm, and nothing will stop us from keeping america safe. travel ban 2.0 president trump expands on his issued his expands on one he issued his during his first term. the latest from washington and the new questions being raised by critics about the timing. this is today in the bay. and good morning to you. on this thursday, i'm marcus washington and i'm kris sanchez. i'm in for laura garcia. we want to get right to our breaking news out of the east bay. that's where crews have the upper hand now on a brush fire which burned dangerously close to a refinery. look at those flames. today in the bay bob redell live there in crockett this morning for us. and, bob, i know you just got an
6:01 am
update from officials out there. what are firefighters saying? well, good morning to kris and marcus. you can see there's many, many fire trucks have already left the scene. there's just a few cal fire trucks that have left. and that's because fortunately, this fire is out. if you look up to your left, you're looking at the remains, the burn scar. this ten acre wildfire is now out and fully contained. obviously, a security guard at a nearby business called it in around 3:00 t morning. he says it started right here in front of us and somewhere in this area. this is at. we're along a street near the intersection of san pablo road. it's not far from a sunoco lp facility, but it started at the base of this very large hill. and according to cal fire, that witness did not see any cars or people nearby at the time. this is around 3:00 this morning and there were no power lines s down. i just asked pg&ei said, is there any damage too thr equipment? they said no. so the cause is still under investigation. but when this fire started, you see in this video here, it did get going and went up the hill. it was fueled
6:02 am
by the dry brush and wind gusts in the 20 mile an hour range. it is still kind of gusty out here as we stand out here as the sun is coming up. cal fire mobilized. the response included local fire agencies from crockett and rodeo. there were 50 firefighters in all, roughly, and in spite of the challenges with the wind and the dry brush, they were able again to keep this contained to just ten acres and keep it from spreading to the nearby sunoco lp facility. danger. now, this is video from about 45 minutes ago, about a half mile away. it just gives you a sense of the size of this hill and the burn scar. hand crews already cut lines around this fire, so agn, it is 100% contained, but cal fire will be out here for some time after the sun comes up, and then they'll have firefighters checking in on the scene over the next 48 hours just to make sure nothing flares back up. you're coming back out here live. i think you can maybe see a firefighter out there in the distance. just checking again. the perimeter of this burn scar. ten acre wildfire. and we just had a wild turkey
6:03 am
that was coming out here onto the burn scar. walking about. we saw it. we could still hear it, but it just gives you a sense that fortunately, no structures were damaged. no one was hurt. fire is out. but we are definitely in the fire season reporting live here in crockett. bob redell today in the bay. yeah, we've seen that brush dry out pretty quick. thank you very much, bob. we're going to continue following this breaking newsry both on air and online. and you can stay up to date anytime by downloading, downloading our free nbc bay area app. it's available for all smartphone devices and kari. there was already an air advisory in effect because of the wildfires in canada. yeah, and we've been talking a lot about that throughout the morning. and we are seeing still some hazy conditions. our morning clouds rolling in temperatures in the mid to upper 50s, and a breezy wind as you're heading out and about. our high temperatures are headed for the mid 70s in novato, 7 in martinez and 80 in dublin. we'll see low 80s in the south bay, as well as much of the peninsula.
6:04 am
and mike's got that backup happening in oakland. yeah, which is not a surprise statement. but today we had a lighter flow of traffic and it's still very smooth past the coliseum, top of the screen near the high street off ramp is slowing. on ramp is where we have a disabled vehicle in the lane. so that's causing an issue heading north. then farther north from there close to 23rd. heard about another incident, so there may be a stretch of slowing from the coliseum up to 23rd. see those sensors change? haven't seen a lot of change here for these sensors. west 80 remains slow. construction zone overnight right through san pablo. and there's still crews that sound like they're still in the area. use caution. expect a little slowing there. the bay bridge backup. not too bad. looking at the rest of the bay, we now see 80 and the san mateo bridge. show that volume shift back to you. thanks, mike. well, new at 6:00 for you. a driver accused of leading chp officers on a high-speedhase is now in custody. this is after an early morning crash. this all started a little before 2:00 this morning near the toll plaza on eastbound interstate 80. officers soon called off that
6:05 am
chase due to the high speeds near the maze. a short time later, chp says that suspect crashed near the westbound 980 off ramp and then just took off running. officers did arrest him and he is now in the hospital. there is no word on his condition. we'll take a live look at sfo now, where a new executive order is bound to impact travel. president trump banning people from a dozen nations from around the world, from entering into the u.s. and he says it's meant to prevent terrorism and also strengthen national security. meanwhile, democrats are calling this another distraction from the senate debate over that mega spending bill. today in the bay's chris pollone is live in washington. and, chris, president trump did put in a similar travel ban during his first term. this was just bigger. yeah, chris. that's right. sure. yeah. of course. and you know, this new trump travel ban, however, is much more expansive than what he implemented in 2017. and it also comes at the same time that a key trump ally is increasing his
6:06 am
criticism on a major part of the trump agenda. the white house says a sweeping new travel ban will go into effect monday on foreign nationals from a dozen countries, primarily in africa and the middle east. in a video posted to x, president trump said people enting the u.s. from those countries are not properly vetted. we don't want them. the president cited national security though egypt, the home country of the suspect in that attack, is not on the list. we cannot have open migration from any country where we cannot safely and reliably vet and screen those who seek to enter the united states. democrats call this latest trump travel ban a distraction. you distract people by making them think that their war with other americans, making them think that they have something to fear from people who look different from them or speak a different language. it comes as one of the president's top allies ratchets up attacks on mr. trump's signature spending and tax cut bill, now

winding through congress. billionaire elon musk writing call your senators. call your congressman, kill the bill. i don't think very many senators are that interested in what elon has to say about musk complains the bill will increase the budget deficit. it extends the president's 2017 tax cuts, spends billions on border security, and includes cuts to medicaid and food assistance programs. nonpartisan budget experts warn it would adit thosu can't go back to the drawing board, and we shouldn't. we have a great product to deliver here. republican leaders in congress say they want the bill on the president's desk by the 4th of july. and president trump has not yet responded to elon musk's criticism of him just yet. but that could change a little later on this morning, as the president welcomes the chancellor of germany into the white house today, it will be the first time the president has me with reporters since friday afternoon. kris and when he

does, he usually has lots to say. thank you chris. happening today, san mateo county leaders are holding a special meeting. this is to take the next steps in removing their embattled sheriff. voters back in march gave supervisors the power to fire sheriff christina corpus. the sheriff continues to deny allegaons found in an independent audit revealing harassment, bullying and retaliation. while the actual removal process may take monont, if it happens, san mateo would be the first county in the state to remove an elected sheriff. all of this comes one day after a corpus appointed a new assistant sheriff. sergio enriquez will start the new position this sunday. he replaces ryan monahan, who sheriff corpus denied. excuse me. sheriff corpus dismissed last year. he has since sued, claiming it was retaliation. taking a live look at the golden gate bridge this morning. it is a cool start to the morning and
6:09 am
a little breezy for some folks. kari yeah, a little breezy in some spots. temperatures starting o out. cool and we will see the breezy wind continue today. and also our morning clouds as we take a live look outside in walnut creek. this will clear out within the next couple of hours and look a little bit more like this. the clear view that we have in san jose and our temperatures in the mid 50s, as we get that south throughout the day, we'll see those temperatures gradually warming up and headed for the upper 70s here will be at 70 degrees at 10:00 and then making it into the mid 70s, and then up to 82 for an afternoon high. gilroy today, 77 degrees and 80 in dublin. and in napa we'll see a high of 78 degrees. mike, where can we find the best gas prices? you know kari. we'll talk about that. i will also point out what's going on here. the red on the san mateo bridge. we talked about that a second ago. but yes, first the gas prices. we have a new low in san jose. it's 416 at most. stop on
6:10 am
camden avenue. familiar place, lower price by a few cents. alameda county sticks with their best price they've had all week. it's 419. this time. we call out union city and the national on alvarado boulevard for the middle price. and then at the bottom here, it's on the peninsula, san mateo, the city and the county. 437 is the lowest we list there. arco on south delaware street right off highway 92 for that deal. gasbuddy.com is where you find out what's good in your area ono zoom in toward the san mateo bridge. the volume is building up, but the slowing we saw accentuated because of a disabled vehicle reported somewhere around that high rise. just off the flat section. you're down to under ten miles per hour as you're squeezing by on what i believe is squeezing by the scene. haven't got a lot of detail. we'll track that. the dumbarton brie to the south is just fine, the bay bridge actually showing a little bit lighter traffic because of folks held up in richmond by construction crews still there. we have west 80 and the backup at the toll plaza though is building back to you. thanks, mike. well, some are calling this a medical miracle. still ahead on today in the bay. one

baby's joyous homecoming after he was saved by the world's first gene editing treatment. we'll introduce you to cj and his family, who are overjoyed to finally have him home. and you may have suspected this is the case, but it looks like some stores and services raise prices for tariffs. and then when those tariffs didn't take effect, never lowered them. we'll talk about that. let's talk about the futures as well. chinese mediane talked. we're working on that story just ahead. hey. care for a snack. well, viral video of one elephant actually entering the store for its pick me up. oh my goodness. keep it right here. wow. we'll be right back. we're going to have that. and so much more. more than one snack i think.
6:14 am
morning. let's take a look outside in san rafael. we're in the upper 50s right now, and it is mostly cloudy, but we will gradually start to see those clouds clearing away, and it will shape up to be a very nice afternoon. a little breezy though as we get a slight dip in temperatures. we'll take a look ahead to a warmer weekend coming up and we see clouds, but i'm not worried about them across the san mateo bridge. what i am worried about is some break taps. you can kind of see them light up at the end of the flat
6:15 am
ction. approaching the high rise things jam disabled vehicle slows you across 92 watching the dumbarton bridge. that's just clear and easy right now. we'll see you at the updates from chp. trying to get a handle on what exactly they're trying to clear. well good morning. very happy thursday to you. reddit is accusing the ai company anthropic of accessing its data more than 100,000 times in order to train its artificial intelligence. now, eddit is getting paid by google to let it do the same thing. no comment from anthropic. this is walmart. walmart filed paperwork with the state warning california it will cut more than 100 jobs at its bay area technology labs. it hopes to find jobs for workers elsewhere. chinese state media just reporting this morning, president trump called president xi and the two talked. now, the white house has not confirmed that. the fed released its beige book wednesday, a report on the economic goings on in the united states, broken down into regions

including the san francisco fed. that's most of the west coast. tariffs mentioned more than 100 times. i thought a comment in that section about inflation was interesting, that price increases that had been implemented in anticipation of certain tariffs were not rolled back once those tariffs were removed, that profit going to stores and services charging you extra little anecdotal evidence there. the new nintendo switch went on sale overnight. it has the tariff story, too. originally, nintendo wanted to conduct an early pre-sale. you pay, you wait to get it. but with president trump threatening all those tariffs, nintendo couldn't figure out how much to charge for it because nobody knew what the tariffs would be. nintendo could end up charging too little. david cole is an expert in the economics of video games. it really does point to when a manufacturer wants to get something out and sold. the manufacturer needs to know what the taxes and tariffs are going be before they can set a price. yeah, it makes it really

hard to assess how you can price your product. and you know what the margins are going to be. you got retailers who need their margins. you got to decide who's going to eat. the cost is going to be the consumers. it's going to be the retailers. is it going to be the manufacturer? so there's all kinds of moving parts going on. and the folks on social media are complaining of a sudden spike in spam voicemail messages. a woman who has something important to discuss or a guy just calling you back, hey, just calling you back. please give me a call whenever you can. thanks. i actuay thought that one was authentic. sounds a little like my friend tommy. except then i got the same call from several area codes. same dude. i'm like, tommy, tommy, come on, get around town. a lot of traveling. if you don't know him, just don't call him back, right? especially tommy. yeah. tommy. that rascal. all right. touching story to share with you this morning involving this adorable little baby boy. doesn't l look

that unusual, but his story will be forever remembered in medical books. little k.j. was born with a very rare and dangerous genetic disea with life threatening consequences. but thanks to the incredible medical team at children's hospital philadelphia and penn medicine, k.j. became the first person in the world to be successfully treated with a personalized gene therapy treatment, and his family members say he is now thriving. he is always happy, always smiling, very observant. some would call him like a news box, like he needs to know everything that's going on. yes, you. yes you. but he's resilient. oh my goodness, that's precious. coming up this morning, the today show will have an exclusive interview with his overjoyed family. that was just a bit of it. and the happy conclusion. after k.j. spent more than 300 days in the

hospital. this starts at seven. right after today in the bay. we have new video from thailand showing something straight out of a fantasy children's story, you know? but for this one, very real for the people over in one grocery store. take a look at this. yes, you are looking. look. look closely. yeah, that's an elephant i know. so it esn't make any sense when you first see it inside the store strolling in there, you know, treating themselves to some snacks, their animal wandered into the store from a nearby national park, and apparently he has a history of entering people's homes looking for food. but this time, this is the first time he's actually gone into a store to visit. in case you're wondering, which i'm sure you are. okay, what did it eat? yeah, okay. nine bags of rice crackers. okay. a sandwich and some bananas. no peanuts. peanuts. oh, wait a minute. skipped on the peanuts. did cost about $25 worth of food. their damage there, but, yeah, didn't have the money to pay for it. instead, after about ten minutes, he had just moved on,
6:20 am
leaving behind some minor damage there to the store. and of course, the cleanup for those workers there. when i first saw that on social media yesterday, i thought it was somebody in one of those inflatable dinosaur costumes. yeah, i was like, what's the story there? and i'm like, what? i know. yeah. and my first thought was, how big is this door? yeah, like i thought it broke down the door, but no. okay. wandered in. they would, you know, sell them some money. yeah. they would have probably rather the curbside pickup. yeah. right. next time. next time. oh my goodness. well, we won't see anything like that in our neck of the woods, i don't think. probably not. no elephant walking down the street. they would use zelazko trust if it is going to break into programing. yeah. we'll send a push alert for that one for sure. all right. and we'll let you know about this nice weather that continues today starting out cloudy and then clearing out. but we've also been watching the air quality. there's an air quality advisory. in effect we've seen quite a few of fires breaking out around the region
6:21 am
as well as the canadian wildfires, some 200 fires burning up there in canada, and it's just spreading smoke all across the country. i've been talking about that on social media. you can follow me at kari hall weather and at kari hall weather eight on tiktok. now we are seeing some moderate air quality for today. that means that if you have asthma or any kind of breathing problems, you should definitely limit your time outside and we're going to see it we are seeing really concentrated up around manitoba, and it's spreading all of this smoke across the midwest and even into the south, but also because of the wind patterns, it's swinging all the way down to texas and mexico, and then all the way back up to the bay area, which is being trapped in some of our valleys. and we're seeing the worst of it in parts of the north bay. so we'll continue to monitor that as we get some slightly cooler temperatures in some spots, headed for the mid to upper 70s for napa and santa rosa in the
6:22 am
east bay will be in the mid to upper 70s and a breezy wind and our highest temperares only make it into the low 80s for some of the valleys. of course a little bit warmer for ukiah, and we'll see those temperatures going up a degree or two for tomorrow, but still pretty nice and mild and near normal high temperatures with san francisco in the upper 60s for saturday and low to mid 80s in the south bay. looking at our weather patn fact, we're seeing more of the same temperatures as we go throughout next week in napa. more of those highs in the low 80s, slightly warmer next thursday and then cooling down next weekend. and that's what we'll see for many of our inland areas with a mix of sun and clouds. mike, what's the update for the san mateo bridge? instead of a disabled vehicle? i hear it's debris of wood and insulation. so construction or destruction debris scattered across lanes as you approach that high rise. that's the reason for the slowing. and i don't know if they have a strategy, if they're going to go
6:23 am
traffic brake in a pickup or if this is just going to dissipate as folks clatter through it. they're slowing westbound and it's building coming across the flat section. now for west 92, we're looking at highway 84, the dumbarton bridge and the connector for south 880. we should see more traffic as some folks make that choice. instead of the san mateo bridge. the bay bridge moves very smoothly. we're building down through berkeley. we are starting to see more slowing through richmond. i thought things were clearing, but still, chp says they have activity here. as you're heading past san pablo dam road, there may be some overnight construction crews in the area. oakland the good news 880 northbound cleared the disabled vehicles to the shoulder at 23rd. back to you. thank you. mike. well, pitching in to help our climate in crisis. next here on today in the bay. events happening this weekend in san francisco to better protect the planet. and join us this saturday for our next soccer tournament. come cheer on the more than 500 students competing from ten bay area schools. it's happening from one in the afternoon until eight in the evening, saturday at san rafael high school, and it will include

6:32 am
8281, in palo alto and novato today will see a high of 75. looking ahead to our friday. also looking nice with a nice sunshine across the bay area. and it's been a tough drive across the san mateo bridge. not so nice across san mateo bridge. that's from hayward to foster city a mid span. we talked about the debris, some wood and some insulation scattered across all lanes. chp just closed the incident, which means they're not worried about it anymore. i did see a truck drive through the area, possibly to clear some of the debris, but a lot of times, if it's going to clear as folks drive through the area and the wind carries it off, that may be what's happening. slower. drive for 92 until you get to the high rise. west 84 holds up with speeds in the green sensors and 880 not so bad, so a lighter volume overall will take you through the east bay. across over here we still have slowing through richmond. the construction crews still there at san pablo, but there's also a crash through that same area, adding more, slowing keeping berkeley a little bit lighter. but we still have a wait at the

bay bridge. back to you. well, a major tech upgrade is one step closer to reality this morning for san francisco police commissioners. late last night signed off on a multimillion dollar gift. this is from a tech billionaire. yeah a gift. happening later today, leaders arare planning to show off what the new possibilities could be today in the bay. ginger conejero saab is live in san francisco. and, ginger, you talked with that billionaire donor, and we want to know why he's doing this. well, chris marcus, that billionaire donor, chris larsen, says that he believes the city is in a phase. of course, correcting. but it does need help, he says. and he thinks specifically public safety needs that help. and it's limited resources. so more about this gift and the man behind the multimillion dollar proposed donation. larsen is an angel investor and the co-founder of ripple inc. that's a crypto software company that's based here in the city. larsen was born in san francisco. he spent time in other parts of the bay area, but he also went to sf

state and stanford. in 2023, he created the police community foundation and he also funded it. he has worked with officers union as well for recruitment ads, but now he's got his eyes set to modernizing and moving. sfpd's real-time investigation center, which is currently housed at 850 bryant. that's the city's hall of justice. now, he tells me he wants to move it into an office space at his company, no longer uses the city literally took the prisoners out of that building because it was so dangerous. yet we have 200 police officers still there. so moving to this building that, you know, we're no longer using will partially address that kind of urgent need to move those officers. as well. and part of the proposal is to move sfpd's rtc. that value of the lease is over $2 million. the other 7 million or so dollars would boost what exists after the passage of proposition e last year and modernize surveillance.
6:35 am
we're talking about license plate readers, the use of drones, things of that sort. we really seen an astounding reduction in crime. so smash and grabs are down over 20% from last year. the murder rate in the city is the lowest since 1960, and it's gone down again in q1 compared to last year. so those trends are looking really, really strong. well, and marcus kris, as you mentioned, we do look forward to hearing more about this later this morning. the mayor, lurie chris larsen, and sfpd will be at the proposed new location for that real time investigation that's in the heart of the financial district. and from what i saw on some of the documents, it's about 14,000ft■!s. we'll have to see w much of that will actually be allotted for the investigations team. but pretty exciting stuff if it all goes through. guys, back to you. sounds good there for a lot of folks, but got to

check everything out. all right. thanks, ginger. also happening today in san francisco. supervisors will hold an emergency hearing on a now shuttered nonprofit that is facing a criminal probe. last month, district attorney brooke jenkins announced that she is now investigating the parks alliance amid allegations of misspent funds. the alliance has been around for five decades, helping to fund open space projects, and one recent project, raising eyebrows, has to do with a playground at crane cove in the dogpatch. today's hearing will focus on the allegations that the group misappropriated nearly $4 million in donations and failed toeimburse some of its partners. late yesterday, the examiner published a statement from trustees confirming that the organization is now indeed shutting down. san jose police looking for a man they say sexually assaulted two hikers in the south bay. i want to show you some surveillance images of that man they're looking for. they say he is in his 30s, has a thin build. he was last seen

wearing a black hoodie with green writing on the back. you see there. and blue jeans. investigators say that happened yesterday on los gatos creek trail in san jose. this is when that man allegedly attacked two women on a walk. anyone with information is asked to call san jose police. happening today, health advocates will rally in the north bay against governor gavin newsom's proposed medi-cal cuts for undocumented immigrants. in mid-may, he released his latest budget proposal, announcing a $16 billion deficit instead of a slight budget surplus. now, to bridge that gap, the governor announced a plan to freeze a program that provides free health care to undocumented immigrants, adding a monthly premium for those already enrolled. opponents today will rally outside the office of north bay state senator mike mcguire, calling for lawmakers to block the governor's proposal. bay area students at schools in san francisco and richmond should soon n be able o breathe a little bit easier. this is all thanks to millions

of dollars in grants to improve the air circulation inside the classroom. the bay area air district directors have approved $3 million in funding to upgrade classroom air filtration systems. more than a dozen of those schools in richmond's west contra costa district will be allocated $1.3 million. schools in bayview hunters point will receive 1.7 million, and another $1 million will go toward bay area's home filtration program. nbc bay area is, of course, celebrating pride all month long, and today, three more bay area flag raisings are happening. san mateo county leaders are gathering in redwood city at 930 this morning. san jose police will raise their flag at 10:00 this morning at the department headquarters on mission street. also in san jose regional medical center will raise its flags at noon. meteorologist kari hall is here, and kari concord pride is sunday. so what's that? weather forecast? yeah, we have some great weather on sunday. it continues from the nice weather we've already been seeing. so this is happening from 12 to 4

in toto santos plaza. we start out with it in the low 70s. very comfortable. the sunshine continues and we'll see those highs in the low 80s. so pretty nice to enjoy the event to wrap up the weekend. now we're today seeing temperatures that will be in the mid 60s for the giants game, early afternoon game, breezy winds and lots of sunshine. we're going to stay in the mid 60s as we go into today in the city and the san mateo ty fair, also going on starting at 11:00 this morning. as we go throughout the day, we'll go from upper 60s to low 70s really nice event to enjoy the cooler temperatures there in redwood city tomorrow evening. we have music on the square so you can enjoy some live music kicking off for the season, and it starts at 6:00 and it will be 71 degrees. mike, you're tracking the commute and seems like it's really slowing down. yeah, we're hitting the breaks here at the san mateo bridge, but we're starting to move a little bit better. oh, look at that as we speak. it's starting
6:40 am
to loosen up. chp has cleared the incident on the span. we heard about debris as you approach the high-rise and whatever was going on there with the insulation and wood on the roadway, looks like things have cleared. and we have recovery now getting back to the toll plaza. it's happening because it's a lighter volume of traffic, so recovery can happen. the dumbarton bridge still clear too as you head south. if you're heading to that area over here. contra costa county no surprises for the pattern developing slowing toward walnut creek. this is the surprise. all morning it's been slow. from pinole through san pablo down to richmond, there is a crash around the san pablo exit, as well as a crew that's still there for caltrans work. so keep that in mind. and the bill. we have the bay bridge toll plaza full, but the richmond bridge really seeing a lot more traffic over the last few minutes. now we're looking over here to the city, a midday game instead of the evening game that will impact traffic getting out of the city for work because folks get out of the game meshing with out of town traffic. and then overnight we have lane restrictions, same as last night over there, the golden gate bridge, highway 17 drivers, no lanes blocked this morning. so that's good news if you're

as we've seen, a lot of that smoke from manitoba, it's been drifting down into the central and eastern u.s. but also it's with because of the wind pattern been drawn into the bay area. and we are seeing it kind of settling into some of our valleys. so it's not as bad as what we are seeing out east. but still, it's one of those days where you want to keep an eye on some of those sensors. and i do talk about that on social be inr 80 or upper 70s and low 80s today in dublin and livermore, 79 in san martin. some of these temperatures a little bit cooler than yesterday. and we're going to see that repeat tomorrow as well, with a slight boost in some of our valley temperatures into the mid 80s. overall, our long range outlook does show that there will be some showers developing over the sierra and some mild weather for the bay area. just enough of a breeze coming off the ocean to keep our temperatures ranging from 60 to
