11:00 am
los angeles would be right now burning to the ground, just like the houses burned to the ground. it's so sad what's going on in los angeles right now at 11, president trump reiterating his stance on the ice protests in
11:01 am
los angeles, also issuing new threats to other cities. this comes as governor newsom takes president trump to court over u.s. troops deployment in la. details on the pivotal hearing playing out today in san francisco and a courtroom. thanks for joining us for our midday newscast. i'm marcus washington. i'm laura garcia. this morning, the white house is doubling down on the need for marines and national guard in los angeles. it comes as immigration protests continue there and across the nation. the federal response to la's immigration protests. facing a critical hearing today in san francisco. this morning, the decision coming out of that case growing more significant with comments coming out of the white house just this morning. nbc bay area's ginger conejero saab live for us in san francisco. and ginger, president trump this morning doubling down on how the federal government will respond to protests. so how does that play if all into this case?
11:02 am
well, this decision from the federal judge here in san francisco is definitely one to watch out for. marcus and laura for california, it will determine how about 5000 federal troops will be used in los angeles outside of california. what this case will decide can be used as an immediate precedent if federal action also is used in other parts of the country. and just as you mentioned this morning, president trump recommits to his use of federal troops in areas where demonstrations and protests are being planned, if at all needed. here he is at the white house this morning, signing an executive order to rescind california's ev mandate. but he took questions far beyond that. here's a president doubling down on that federal action. we have a great country, and we're going to keep it that way. and when it comes to los angeles or other cities, if we see other cities are gearing up and these people are agitators, they're paid, they're professionals, they're
11:03 am
insurrectionists. so what can pause trump's action? a possibly a decision from that federal judge here in the city later this afternoon that stems from a case that governor gavin newsom and state attorney general rob bonta filed on monday against the president and defense secretary pete hegseth, arguing that california never requested federal intervention. newsom is urging the court to grant emergency relief, preventing the national guard and active duty marines from taking part in local law enforcement actions or ice activity. so that hearing once again happening at 130 in the afternoon. but prior to that, governor newsom was on the daily also talking about the significance of this moment. so why, for you, is this the defining moment? i think it's a red line when you're using military that are trained for foreign incursions, to do domestic law enforcement in american cities. i think that's a red line. if that's not a red line, i don't know what red
11:04 am
lines mean. so the restraining order would not prevent u.s. troops from protecting the safety of federal buildings, but it would restrict participation in the enforcement of immigration laws and ice activity. so any ruling from that tro case today would likely set that precedent in the event that federal action elsewhere happens in the nation. that may include the no protests planned across the country this saturday, some 1500 demonstrations are being organized around the nation to protest the military parade happening in d.c, celebrating 250 years of the u.s. army. that also coincides with president trump's birthday. now, this morning, texas governor greg abbott announced that he has preemptively deployed more than 5000 national guard troops ahead of this weekend's protests and bay area protesters here are also organizing no demonstrations. local law enforcement saying that they are ready, including sfpd, that says
11:05 am
they encourage protesters to use their first amendment rights. but violence, especially towards sfpd, will not be tolerated. we're live in san francisco, ginger conejero saab nbc bay area news. all right. we'll continue to follow this story. thank you. ginger, we follow that hearing. and be sure to stick with nbc bay area, both on air as well as online for the latest developments. we're also streaming 24/7 on roku and so many other platforms, so we will post those on social media as well. just look out for us wherever you stream this midday, we're learning shocking new developments following a deadly air india plane crash. one person who was on the plane has survived. in fact, there's reports that he actually got up and walked away. we're about to show you a video clip of the crash, but we should warn you, it may be difficult to watch. the clip shows an air india 787 dreamliner plane wobbling as it was descending, before exploding into a huge fireball in india's northwestern city. it we know it
11:06 am
crashed shortly after takeoff. more than 240 passengers were on board. here's nbc's claudio lavanga with more on the investigation. what we know so far from local authorities is that a boeing 787 dreamliner operated by air india, the country's flag carrier, crashed into a residential area near the airport in the western city of ahmedabad shortly after takeoff. now, local television footage showed smoke billowing from the crash area. now, according to air india, the plane was carrying 242 people, 230 passengers and 12 crew members. now the flight was bound to arrive in london gatwick airport later this afternoon. we also just got a breakdown of the nationalities of those on board. 169 people are indians, 53 are british, one canadian and seven of them are portuguese. now, india's health minister said many people have died in the crash, while the indian prime minister, narendra modi, has
11:07 am
called this tragedy heartbreaking beyond words. claudio lavanga, nbc news, london. we are following breaking news in southern california. california senator alex padilla was just physically removed from a news conference in los angeles. take a look at this video. it happened just moments ago, all captured on camera. dhs secretary kristi noem was actually speaking at the podium. padilla started saying something while she was speaking, and then you can see several people pushing him out of the room. you can hear padilla saying, quote, i'm senator alex padilla. i have a right to be here. we've reached out to padilla's office for comment. we're waiting to hear back. of course, we'll bring you updates on air and online as soon as we get them. well, california highway patrol released new video giving a moment by moment account of that pursuit in oakland, which ended in a crash that killed a beloved oakland teacher. right now,
11:08 am
oakland community members are calling on the chp to abide by the oakland police department's stricter pursuit policy. nbc bay area's kris sanchez joins us from our newsroom with more. kris, good morning to you. marcus and laura. so we'll tell you that video is not graphic, but it is veryntense as we see the pursuit play out. and i'll show you that in just a moment. but i want to remind you that there are oakland community members who are rallying as we speak, outside the oakland telegraph avenue office. the chp office asking them to follow the oakland pd policy, which is much more conservative. i want to show you that video now. it is edit by chp. so we're seeing it as the department wants us to see it. this is when officers attempted to stop eric hernandez garcia, for the first time for felony evading from alameda county officers. now, the assistant chief says the officers discontinued the pursuit shortly after because the suspect was driving erratically anat speeds of up
11:09 am
to 100mph. in the video, you see that fire hydrant there? that's the one that he crashed into the hydrant, which killed the victim. the family of marvin boomer is now suing the chp, blaming the crash that killed the castlemont teacher on that pursuit of the teenage driver. shortly after, the chp called off their pursuit, eric hernandez garcia lost control. and that's what you see there as that happens. he, the boomer, was killed. his girlfriend was injured. now, just about an hour ago, we asked police chief floyd mitchell about police pursuits on city streets. from a policing standpoint, poses a high risk to our community, and we have to balance that, and that's what we're trying to do. and that's what my proposed changes to our current policy do is, is to provide that balance of safety to our community, but also provide security to the residents of our security regarding criminal activity. so i believe that the proposal that i presented to the police commission for review and
11:10 am
consideration balances that. now, this is a prior rally back on may 31st, but it's safe to think that some of those folks are also rallying outside the chp office this morning and will rally again at 430 this afternoon outside oakland city hall. they are members of the anti-police terror project. they are organizing, but there are other community members as well who have been pressuring the oakland police commission to keep the opd policy as is and to require the chp to follow it as well. they made the same call back in march after this crash, where a chp pursuit ended with a driver hitting a child. shortly after officers ended the one minute chase, the chp said, out of concern for public safety. now, the chp is on oakland city streets to saturate high crime areas, and they've been very effective. but again, they don't have to follow the opd police pursuit policy, which went into into effect in 2022. under that policy, one of the items is the
11:11 am
officers cannot exceed 50mph without approval. and that is one of the things that oakland police chief floyd mitchell is asking to reverse. they are making that he is making that request of the commission handed over his recommendations. they have a couple of months to figure out whether or not they want to change that, but we'll continue to follow that for you, laura. all right. thank you very much, chris. let's take a live look outside this midday overlooking san jose. looking forward to a nice afternoon out there. kari. yeah, it looks really nice there. and we're still seeing our microclimates with the fog right over san francisco. the low clouds. and so that's keeping those temperatures down. and we're also seeing it over the golden gate bridge as you're getting out and about. so the coastal area stay foggy, cool and breezy. and we'll see some peeks of sunshine over the next few hours. but the wind will pick up rit at about 5:00. and that cool air blowing across the bay area will bring those temperatures down once againin.o we are going to see temperatures
11:12 am
in san francisco headed for the upper 60s today, while oakland will see a little bit more sunshine there and 73 degrees, it will be 81 in martinez and 75 in dublin, as well as fremont and in the north bay. we're talking about temperatures in the upper 70s and low 80s. all of these numbers are very normal for this time of year, hitting those upper 70s in san jose and low 80s in the south county. and tomorrow this weather continues. so we've been in this very steady weather pattern. it continues into the weekend as well. we'll talk about some events going on and help you make some plans. that's coming up in the full microclimate forecast. back to you. all right. thanks so much kari. well, new video showing president trump signing the bill that will reverse california's plan to phase out the sale of new gas powered vehicles. california has set its own admission rules to ban the sale of all new gas powered vehicles by the year 2035. well, president trump blocked the state's stricter admission rule during his first term. then former president biden reinstated them. the senate
11:13 am
passed a bill blocking california's gas ban two weeks ago, shortly after president trump signed the bill. california california attorney general rob bonta announced a new lawsuit against the trump administration. what we're seeing is a thinly veiled attempt by the president to retaliate against california for choosing progress over regression. now, governor newsom also blasted back, saying in part in a statement, quote, trump's all out assault on california continues, and this time he's destroying our clean air and america's global competitiveness in process. now we are suing to stop this latest illegal action by the president, who is wholly owned subsidiary of big polluters, end quote. well, cricket at the coliseum coming up on today in the bay, the excitement ahead of today's debut, showcasing one of the world's most popular sports.
