right now at 11:00. too close
11:01 pm
for comfort tonight. fire crews are still at it, working to fully contain this brush fire in the hills of east san jose. the fire forced the evacuation of several nearby homes and had a lot of people nervous. the fire broke out this afternoon near ranch place and old piedmont road, burning about 100 acres. nbc bay area's jocelyn moran is joining us live from san jose. and jocelyn, we understand the evacuation orders have now been lifted. right. right. gia. but we did talk to several people throughout the night. there were people who were not home and heard about what was happening, rushed home and then were in those evacuation zones so couldn't check on their homes. and then there were people who were in those evacuation warning areas who were just packing up their stuff, their pets just ready to go in case the fire got closer. tonight, fire crews continue to work to put out the ranch fire in the east san jose foothills. cal fire says forward progress has stopped. at one point, about 170 people were fighting this fire, including
11:02 pm
teams from san jose fire and cal fire. the firefight happening by air and on the ground, some doing all they could to protect homes in the area. they're not fighting the fire. they're keeping the fire from getting to those structures. several people were put under evacuation orders and warnings. craig was in half moon bay when he started receiving texts. his mom was at the house. then it just started ringing and ringing. everybody said, is your mom okay? is your mom okay? and so i went up. and what was your what were you feeling in that moment? terror. i was afraid. another man tells us he was just getting home from a trip, and we just got home a couple hours ago, and all of a sudden we can't get through. we have horses and mules up ththere on the ranch, and they're fine. and i said, oh my god, and i could see the flames. others were watching the fire from their backyards and were preparing in case they had to leave. i packed up my car and got my dogs in there as best as i could, and we always had to go back and i'm going to repack it.
11:03 pm
now. craig has been checking in with his mom. he tells us she is doing fine. as you can see, there are crews here. we've also talked to residents in the area who tell us that gives them a source of comfort, knowing that there are crews here throughout the night. the fire is 75% contained. the cause of the fire is still under investigation and thankfully no structures were damaged. gia yeah, that is good news. jocelyn. thank you so much. fire danger becoming more of a concern as temperatures rise. meteorologist rob mayeda is here now. keeping a closese e on things and rob even hotter tomorrow. there's talk about public safety power shutoffs later. later on in the week. yeah. due to the dry, gusty winds inland, that could be possible as early as thursday. now meantime, with those areas that burn today, the grasses in light brush very dry. and they're about to be stressed by high heat. coming tomorrow. hottest day of the week tomorrow with temperatures in the 80s and 90s. now after that we will see cooling. but the problem is we're also going to be seeing increasing wind as we get into thursday and friday. so notice on the fire danger index, the
11:04 pm
interior hills of the north bay on tomorrow due to the hot temperatures. then thursday wind speeds will be increasing. we're looking at wind gusts not just for the coast, but those interior hills thursday into friday. this following the hottest day of the week will lead to elevated fire danger, especially for the inland hills starting thursday, and that continues into the weekend. we'll have the details on how hot those temperatures get tomorrow, and the cooling and the wind that's on the way, coming up in just about eight minutes. back to you. all right rob, thanks. our other top story tonight. things are escalating. this is a live look at tel aviv. israel and iran have launched another round of attacks. and president trump is saying, quote, we now have complete and total control of the skies over iran. the president held a meeting with his national security advisers today inside the situation room. administration officials say he's considering a range of options on iran, including a u.s. strike there. meantime, two u.s. officials tell nbc news iran is prepared to strike u.s. bases and assets in the middle
11:05 pm
east, but there are no indications anything is imminent. u.s. bases and assets are the highest state of alert and readiness they have been for months. those officials also saying the pentagon is expediting the deployment of an aircraft carrier and other ships to the middle east. well, what will the judges decide? the fight between governor newsom and president trump over the national guard returned to a san francisco courtroom today. this all started last monday when president trump deployed the troops to la. but last thursday, a lower court found the president likely violated the constitution. the judge issued a temporary restraining order returning control of the troops to the governor. but the ninth circuit court of appeals immediately paused that order ahead of a hearing today. in court today, attorneys for california argued the president's order violated the law. they also argue the president knew he was required to notify the governor before federalizing state guardsmen. it actually point you to the president's memorandum on june
11:06 pm
7th itself, which directed secretary hegseth to coordinate with the governors of the states. that suggests that even the president saw this statute as imposing some type of consultation or coordination requirement for secretary hegseth did not do so. during last week's hearings, the judge largely focused his questions on the president's attorneys today very different as a three judge panel grilled both sides. no word yet on when n they'llssue a ruling. both the state and the president have indicated they plan to appeal the case all the way to the supreme court. why did he do it? the pink triangle installation at twin peaks is a long standing tradition in san francisco during pride month. but tonight, a 19 year old man is facing charges for allegedly vandalizing the iconic display, and the incident took place in the middle of the afternoon. nbc's pete suratos has the details. so the vandalization
11:07 pm
started up there and it went uphill. then it came down this way. patrick kearny street is one of the founders of the pink triangle, a display that's been installed at twin peaks for more than 30 years to kick off pride month. but it has a different look tonight after police notified kearny street that someone vandalized the display, they saw somebody spray painting these big black white lines on the pink triangle, so i came up to see what it w was. accding to sfpd, they arrested a 19 year old man who officers caught defacing it around noon today. and at the site, officers found evidence of tools that are used for vandalism. i'm not sure what the message was or what the intent was. hopefully it wasn't actually a hate crime. it may have just been vandalism of some sort. the pink triangle is truly one of the iconic symbols here in san francisco during pride month, and unfortunately, this is not the first vandalism incident to take place at the site. it was set on fire in 2009
11:08 pm
and it's then had small graffiti on it before, but never this big. people we spoke to in the castro are calling the incident unfortunate and concerning. it's incredibly sad and disturbing that someone would do that. it's important for us to kind of keep these symbols that remind people about the history of the lgbt community, and why it's important for us to keep something like that here. with the display up for another two weeks, kearny street hopes this incident doesn't become a trend. if that can happen here in san francisco, what can happen in other parts of the nation where they're less accepting? in san francisco? pete suratos nbc bay area news. new at 11 business news. that's turning a lot of heads tonight. we've confirmed san jose earthquakes owner john fisher plans to sell the team again, not the a's, but the earthquakes who play at paypal park. the billionaire has apparently hired an investment bank to help him sell the mls club. as you know, fisher also owns the a's. recently moved
11:09 pm
that team out to sacramento. they're currently playing in west sacramento, as fisher hopes to build a new ballpark in las vegas. were you watching? he got a standing ovation at oracle park. one of baseball's top hitters is here. the giants introduce rafael devers tonight. fans were fired up as they walked into oracle to see the newest member of the orange and black put on his giants jersey for the first time. beyond excited. we've been needing a power bat for years. this is the shot in the arm for sure. it's i can't remember the last time the giants made an acquisition like johnny cueto back in 2016 was devers came over in a blockbuster trade with the boston red sox. highlights from tonight's game coming up in sports.ell, you've probably sat in it. beat traffic on highway 17. tonight we've learned relief could be in your future. during the summer, especially, the line of cars can be long. along highway 17 in los

gatos heading into santa cruz. but now vta says it has secured nearly $14.7 million to start designing a plan to add more lanes. almost 2 million of the initial funding is coming from the city of los gatos, who suffered from congestion on surface streets as drivers try to bypass the highway traffic. okay, so here's the plan. vta wants to add two lanes on highwaway 17, a southbound northbound lane between the highway nine interchange and lark avenue. the transit agency is also looking to add bike improvements over the interchange, along with widening sidewalks. the project will improve traffic flow and reduce congestion on 17 during the peak commute time, so busy summer weekends. commute time in the morning and the afternoon, but it could be some time before the stretch sees any construction. vta says it's hoping to have the final design done by spring 2028, and then it will need to
11:11 pm
secure more funding, which it thinks it can do to begin construction. a few years after that. self-driving cars are now rolling through the peninsula and parts of silicon valley today. alphabet owned waymo officially expandedts reach, fresh off state approval to expand operations. the self-driving cars will now hit the streets in those cities right there brisbane, burlingame, millbrae, san bruno and south san francisco. farther south, in palo alto and menlo park, waymo has also gotten state approval to expand into san jose. but so far, the company hasn't outlined a timeline for that expansion. we're back in 60s, just ahead the largest jewelry heist in u.s. history, and the bay area is at the center of it. how investigators say thieves managed to steal $100 million worth of precious stones from this armored truck. plus, more trouble for pg&e y cal fire is calling for possible criminal prosecution against the utility over 2022 fire in san mateo county. we investigate, and

line for the sale of tiktok. again, back in january, a law requiring the social media app to be sold off by its china based parent company went into effect. the legislation was passed over concerns that tiktok's chinese ownership poses a u.s. national security risk. today, the white house secretary said mr. trump will sign an executive order this week, giving tiktok 90 more days to find a new owner. this will allow it to continue operating in the u.s. this is the third time the deadline has been extended. it's believed to be the largest jewelry heist in u.s. history, and today, federal
11:14 pm
investigators identified and charged seven people in the case. the suspects are accused of stalking an armored truck, leaving an international jewelry show in san mateo. this was back in july 2022. and this right here is police body camera from when the driver reported the jewelry missing. prosecutors say the robbers followed this truck to a rest stop along i-5 in lebec, just south of the grapevine. that is where they managed to steal $100 million worth of diamonds, emeralds, gold, rubies and luxury watches. two of the seven suspects appeared in federal court in la today. one is serving prison time in arizona for an unrelated burglary. investigators are still trying to track down four other suspects. well, pg&e is in trouble again, this time over a fire that broke out three years ago in san mateo county. our investigative unit learned cal fire h referred the case to prosecutors. and that's because of the length of time the utility allegedly delayed some
11:15 pm
critical safety work. investigative reporter jaxon van derbeken has the details. the edgewood fire burned a hillside near redwood city during a sweltering june day in 2022, thanks to low winds, it was kept to just 20 acres, but the firefight wasn't easy. we had some firefighters from our county who suffered injuries, and we do believe that pg&e engaged in negligence. san mateo county district attorney steve wagstaffe says his office is reviewing cal fire's report on the edgewood fire, which refers to utility for possible criminal prosecution, which could trigger corporate fines and greater oversight. while we haven't made our final decision by any stretch, it is certainly something where we feel there is liability on pg&e part. he says that's because the utility repeatedly put off addressing an issue that cal fe determined
11:16 pm
sparked the fire. the allegation is that pg&e left a high voltage line sagging in place for six years, until it finally came close enough to a le below it to spark the fire. regulators with the public utilities commission noted that pg&e engineers first flagged the sagging line in 2016, when it was less than six feet from the line below. state safety regulations mandate a minimum eight feet of separation, and the company's own rules specify that should have been addressed within three months. but six years later, the high voltage line was sagging so badly the lines were less than two feet apart. and, according to the commission's investigation, sparked the fire. as a result of this, a two lines getting too close together, producing something that looks identical to lightning, melting the copper, dropping the copper on the ground. and then we have a fire. ken buskey is an
11:17 pm
electrical engineer who has investigated more than 1000 fires and reviewed the regulator's findings. cal fire's report has not been made public. there's a reason there was a required eight foot clearance is to take care of these problems. they ignored what the rule was at their own peril, and they ended up with a fire. state regulators cite a pattern of lapsed maintenance issues in their whopping $7 million citation for the edgewood fire, stating, pg&e has a history of failing to act in a timely manner to address maintenance issues and safety hazards. pg&e told us it is still reviewing the commission's findings. it says its beefed up inspections to ensure safe spacing of lines across its system. it hopes to ease its maintenance backlog by 2029, by mega bundling, outstanding repairs and prioritizing highest fire risk problems. that focus, it told us, has cut backlog related fire
11:18 pm
risk by as much as 79%. pg&e wildfire prevention work is making our system safer and more resilient, while positioning us to better serve our customers in the short and long term. and respond to our state's evolving climate challenges, the company said in a statement. it's getting better. it's getting better every year. mark noel is a butte county prosecutor who has joined other counties in overseeing pg&e fire safety efforts since the 2021 dixie fire. the largest in state history. it's still not perfect, but it's definitely improving. and i from everything that that we're seeing, we are definitely. seeing a shift, an active shift in the culture of pg&e. but in san mateo county, d.r. wagstaffe
11:19 pm
is still weighing whether to file criminal charges for the edgewood fire. if pg&e truly does care, and they they run lots of ads to tell you they care. my personal belief is they could do a better job at caring. jaxon van derbeken. nbc bay area. we investigate. all right, let's bring in rob mayeda. rob i was seeing so many people without their jackets in the east bay today. it was a nice day for that. it was, you know, 80 is pretty comfortable. tomorrow might be borderline uncomfortable. i think we'll have more 90s showing up. and speaking of 90s today, santa rosa, up to 90 degrees. san francisco was warmer, but still 65 and san jose 78. tomorrow. looking at 80s ahead of the warmest day of the week. this is wednesday. as we get into your microclimate forecast around the bay area right now, san jose, a comfortable 59 degrees hazy skies there looking off to the east of downtown. but look at walnut creek and concord still in the mid 60s. ac may still be running in some of those inland east bay communities at this
11:20 pm
hour. right now we're at 59 degrees in san rafael and into san francisco. not seeing much in the way of fog, 56 degrees. and it's interesting when you look at our temperatures, places like concord and calistoga still in the mid 60s. also interesting way atop atlas peak. look at that 70 degrees. when you're looking at signs that tomorrow is going to be warmer, when you're seeing these 70 degree temperatures on the hills, strong temperature inversion setting up and those warm temperatures inland less than the marine air influence. all signs point to a warmer start to tomorrow morning, as you see in the 24 hour temperature change and a warmer finish to the day as well. a little bit of low clouds early on the coast during the morning hours and back into the sunshine as we head into the starting off in the 50s aroundrs the bay but higher up. low temperatures in the mid 60s and some of those warmer places for tomorrow morning. lunchtime temperatures inland already in the 80s. now tomorrow's highs mid to upper 80 south of downtown san jose, 90 in reach for the east bay valleys and north bay. mostly 70s bayside.
11:21 pm
and then we begin to see cooling arriving thursday and into friday. but as we talked about at the top of this newscast, this is going to be gusty and dry for those inland hills. fire danger still high even as the temperatures come down. interesting to point out, the system that is bringing up the wind is tossing some showers to our north to start the weekend, and fortunately not too far south though to reduce that fire danger because this is a windy pattern, once it gets going thursday, it's likely to stay going as we go through the weekend. so hot day tomorrow for inland valleys. not so much. in san francisco. we may just briefly get to 70, then things cool off. fire danger on the coast? not as much because of the west northwest winds off the ocean, but inland. that wind is plenty dry like we saw this afternoon around alum rock. obviously, the grass fires that have been picking up over the last few days. this is a pattern we have to watch because the setup is hot and dry ahead of time. and then once the wind picks up, some of those inland areas, especially the grasses will be even more dry after the
11:22 pm
heat we're seeing headed our way tomorrow. yeah. and then summer starts on friday. that's right. 742 friday evening. exactly. there you go. thanks, rob. it's getting really wild in the north getting really wild in the north bay. the black bears that 1-800-got-junk? works till midnight seven days a week. we come when it■s convenient for you, not when it's convenient for us. when you want junk to disappear. all you have to do is point. we make space for possibilities.

theres a lot of sightings in sonoma and marin county. take a look. the sonoma county parks department posted this video recently showing a curious young bear at stillwater cove, north of jenner. over the past few weeks, bears were also spotted near sea ranch and in jenner, as well as in the russian river valley. experts say two things are happening the bear population is on the rise in the north bay, and this is also the time of year when bears start to explore on their own. bears move by their nose because their nose informs their bellies and they like to eat. so they're just looking for new places with food. and our best strategy is to push them on and not have them be comfortable in these residential areas. the nor bay bear collaborative says there are at least 94 bears in the north bay. well, digital billboards are coming to san jose. today, the city council voted unanimously to install five new digital billboards at some of the city's most

recognizable landmarks. the company running the ads on the billboards will give the city 15% of the advertising revenue. that amounts to an estimated $20 million over the next 20 years. the billboards are going up at the center for the performing arts, the convention center, and near some downtown parking garages. they will be turned off and go dark from midnight until 6 a.m. china basin was jammin. this time. it wasn't thrive city, it was the giants new superstar making his home debut .we
