wave of homelessness on the streets today in the bay's ginger conejero saab joins us live in san francisco this morning. and ginger mayor daniel lurie has already warned that these painful cuts are necessary to close the budget gap. why are they getting so much pushback now? well, good morning, laura. mayor lurie has been working to close an $800 million budget deficit over the next two years. and while, as you said, it has been clear that cuts are necessary, that they need to be made, advocates for civil legal aid say they should be spared because it's going to create much of the same problem that the city is already trying to solve. and that is the message protesters will try to send today to the mayor when they hold a vigil on the steps of city hall urging the mayor to save civil legal aid. supporters say the $4.2 million cut will result in hundreds more people becoming homeless each year, and thousands more losing their assets. our senior investigative reporter, bigad shaban, recently

sat down with the head of open door legal, whose services are on the chopping block now. the nonprofit provides universal access to legal services, offering legal aid for families struggling with everything from wage theft to unpaid child support. as executive director opposes this cut so strongly, he began a hunger strike june 9th in protest. the city's own data shows that for every one person, they help exit homelessness, 3 to 4 people enter it, and that means we'll never get a handle on the problem unless we go upstream and prevent people, as many people as possible, from entering homelessness. so seven supervisors are voicing their opposition, and that's quite a bit of a rarity. ever since mayor daniel lurie took office, the mayor's office says it plans to allocate an extra $90 million in previously unused funds for homeless services. now, other departments in the city are also
6:05 am
facing cuts, including the department of public works, where a city workers may lose their jobs. across the city, about 100 city workers are expected to lose their jobs, while budgets for police and public safety are getting an additional $20 million. now, we did reach out to the mayor's office this morning, and we are waiting to hear back. today's protest outside city hall will start at three, and faith leaders there are expected to start a hunger strike of their own to call more attention to this. we'll see if they are successful in making the mayor reconsider, but the board of supervisors will have until july 31st to pass the new proposed budget. this is definitely something to keep an eye out for, laura, but for now, we're live in san francisco, ginger conejero saab. today in the bay. all right. thanks for the latest, ginger. well, now to developments in the escalating conflict between israel and iran. i want to give you a live look this morning at tel aviv. israeli fighter jets overnight
