escalating conflict. plus, crews remain on scene after a fire broke out in contra costa county, burning dangerously close to homes where containment stands this morning as evacuations are lifted. also tracking hurricane eric this morning, a category three hurricane that's expected to make landfall in southern mexico. we are monitoring the major storm and the impact it's set to have. this is today in the bay. thanks so much for joining us on this thursday morning i'm kris sanchez. i'm in for marcus washington and i'm laura garcia. good to have you. first let's start out in eastern contra costa county, where evacuation orders have now been lifted in the wake of a fast-moving brush fire that threatened homes. it started sometime around 7:00 last night around somersville road near antioch. it burned more than 290 hundred acres before firefighters managed to stop the forward progress. firefighters say for people who live nearby
5:02 am
suffered minor smoke inhalation while all nearby homes were saved. the fencing along some of the properties was destroyed. for people who live there, it s all a little too close for comfort. that's crazy. as i drove more down, i see a lot of families evacuating, grabbing their kids luggage. just a lot of stuff, a lot of tears. a lot of people crying. firefighter say strong winds and dry grass fueled the flames, and the conditions are expected to linger. the fire is now 50% contained. as soon as today, about 1000 bay area pg&e customers in rural areas may feel the impact with power shutoffs. our bob redell will join us with a live report covering that aspect in our next half hour. and it is 502. we want to check in with cinthia pimentel, who is following that possibility of power outages. yeah. and we see the psps watch right there orange on your screen. so for coco alameda, santa clara. and we also have some people that trickle on into

the bay area. so i wanted to mention san joaquin county also included in this. and of course it's for those gusty and dry conditions. now if we take a look now at those wind speeds out there towards antioch and the delta, it is a little breezy, but a little bit of that recovery overnight, which also helped to bring down those temperatures, suppressing a little bit of that fire out there, back down into those upper 50s and 60s, compared to the very warm 90s that we saw out there in the east bay yesterday. now, what i'm watching for today and a little bit into the first half of our weekend as we go on and wrap up spring, get into summer. it is always an elevated fire danger, but i'm not expecting any extreme levels for now. it is going to be a windy day about 50 mile an hour. gusts above those 2000ft. east bay hills, an area that we are pointing out for today. now, as far as that fog and the recovery that it lets us do overnight, as well as keeping those 100 away. so no extreme heat, no extreme fire danger for now. it's something that i'll continue to watch on into the

weekend. i'll, of course, have the latest on eric that we mentioned at the top of the hour and our full microclimate forecast. and you can always track the wind and fire danger on the go just by downloading our free nbc bay area weather app. all you have to do is scan that qr code on your screen to get personalized push alerts right to your phone. kris. thank you cinthia. now breaking overnight, as we mentioned, an iranian missile hit a hospital in the israeli city of beersheba. dozens of people are reportedly hurt, and although the official extent of the damage is not official, the windows are blown out. heavy smoke was seen for miles. all hospital buildings were closed except for life saving care. as iran and israel continue to exchange fire. president trump is weighing his options on whetr the u.s. will get directly involved in that conflict. lawmakers battling over restricting his authority to unilaterally make that decision. today in the bay's alice barr joins us now from washington. alice gop is pretty split over this issue about
5:05 am
whether going to war at this point is the right thing for the u.s. kris they are. and there are those on either side of maga world who are coming down pretty divisively on this, because there are many who believe that iran, just, no matter what, cannot be allowed to have a nuclear weapon. but then there are those who say it's kind of not america first to get involved in another middle east conflict. a senior admiministrati official tells nbc news that at this point, all options remain on the table. iran's supreme leader warned any u.s. military intervention would be met by irreparable damage, and president trump is deciding critical next steps. this morning, israel assessing damage from a new round of iranian airstrikes hitting a major hospital in the south and areas around tel aviv. that after israel struck another target in the iranian nuclear program that it's seeking to destroy as president trump weighs whether the u.s. military will join that

5:11 am
it looking? yeah, it's looking pretty bad at this hour. just made landfall right there, as you mentioned, western oaxaca. so if you have any family members or are heading that way for any summer vacations in the next couple of days, it's going to be a rough picture. it is a category three right now. those winds at around 125 miles an hour, moving northwest at around nine miles an hour, and over the next couple of hours, even on into tomorrow, we could see areas right there along the coastline. so acapulco, also colima, getting some of those heavy rain bands and also those strong wind gusts watching out for that storm surge tt also paints a deadly picture, even if you are far away from the coast. so something to watch there with eric. the eastern pacific hurricane season started about a month ago, but still continues into late november. so a little bit different than the atlantic hurricane season. let's bring it back here. a good thursday morning to san jose. we are going to be looking at the cooling trend arriving for today on into tomorrow and a little bit for the weekend. so that was just a quick spike in those temperatures yesterday. we'll
5:12 am
continue to talk about the windy and dry conditions, especially for the coastline and those windy hills as well, bringing up that fire danger a little bit. of course, we do start summer tomorrow, so we'll talk about the weekend too, and some changes that we're looking. if you're heading north on those summer drive times. speaking of drive times, let's talk about what's going on in our traffic maps. no major accidents to talk about. we see a little bit of slowing there through the altamont. that is typical, but we'll watch for that caution little triangle under that 580 sign. as you can tell, as far as some drive times for the tri-valley, it's about a 24 minute ride. getting yourself from grant lane over on into 680 kris and laura. all right. thank you cinthia. much more news ahead on today in the bay, including the historic sale of an nba team, the billion dollar deal, shaking up a dynasty. it's wild. plus, celebrating 50 years of cinema history. a preview of the way fans are set to celebrate the beloved shark thriller jaws. also, six sets of

role. wow. all the dallas cowboy cheerleaders are getting a pay increase. they are getting a 400% raise. the news was disclosed at the end of the season of america's sweethearts, that popular netflix docu series we probably have seen, which tracks the renowned team of dancers. the series, which debuted its second season yesterday, chronicled the cheerleaders push for better pay, putting a renewed spotlight on compensation issues that have long plagued nfl cheerleading squads. wow, that's worth a high kick right there. 400%. i wonder how much they were making for that big of a right. i don't think they were making a lot. all week long, the today show has been celebrating the 50th anniversary of the blockbuster hit jaws. and this morning, nbc's joe fryer is sharing a behind the scenes look at the movies and memories from the cast, extras and family members of those islanders. this week marks 50 years since the movie jaws was released. the film was

always has my back, so it's always cool. like knowing that we could support each other and everything we do. i think there is a connection because we all, like, go through the same thing of, like, having a twin, having to share stuff. this could be a trend at the high school. seven sets of twins are on track to graduate as part of next year's senior class. what is in the water? yeah. no kidding. a lot of twins there. that's nice. they're so close. all right. a lot of people coming off a lot of graduations, most recently. warm yesterday, but cooler today. i know it was just that quick little hint of an early summer preview, but as we officially enter it tomorrow, it's going to be cooler. so if you didn't like the heat, we've got better news for you today in that microclimate forecast. let's step out the door right now in santa rosa, a crisp 50 degrees. as we go through the morning, you'll notice that it's not going to warm up as quickly as it did yesterday. so for that lunchtime hour, 76 degrees, if that's too warm for you, you can have lunch inside. as far as
5:20 am
everyone else, we're going to knock down those temperatures about 1015 degrees compared to yesterday. so along the coastline we're going to feel that breeze. 59 in half moon bay. our microclimates will be out 66 in hayward to those low 80s that pop up few in between 81 santa rosa, 82 in fairfield. so it's still going to be a little bit warm out there towards our driest areas of the bay. so we're talking solano county out there towards the tri-valley. also, the delta will do 80 in morgan hill, 73 in san jose. notice that that cooldown is even more as we go on into tomorrow, so i'm not too worried about the temperatures as far as our fir danger goes. the other thing that is worrisome is, of course, those gusty winds that pick up into the afternoon. so the areas that you see shaded in those oranges and purples along the marin coast, the peninsula mountains, also into the interior out there towards concord, the altamont pass, it is a little bit of a typical papattern th we see in those evening hours. so that's where those grasses still remain very dry. and that risk is very high
5:21 am
out there towards our mountains. overall, the regional risk above average. i've noticed some pepeople telling me it's it didt rain as much. and you're right, we could have gotten a little bit more water to keep those hillsides green for a little longer, but now they're all brown and dry. speaking of some moisture, let's go up and talk about what's going on this weekend. a little bit of a late season storm up there towards the pacific northwest, trickling in through parts of northern california. but for the bay, we're still going to stay pretty dry even on into next week. so check it out. that 7-day forecast for us here. juneteenth for our inland valleys will bring a much needed relief getting us into those mid to upper 70s, so we'll stay in the 70s for the weekend until about sunday on into next week, where we'll rebound those temperatures back into the 80s, but no extreme heat. san francisco and along the peninsula. if you've got plans there, prepare to hold on to your hats. windy and breezy on into the weekend. summer officially begins tomorrow with temperatures in those mid 60s. it will warm up slightly as we go on into sunday and into our next workweek.
5:22 am
let's talk about some drive times now. getting ourselves through the east bay. about a 15 minute ride from highway four to the bay bridge in all directions. really? from 238. also northbound 80 from 238 13 minute ride for you there. since it is juneteenth, muni is going to be running on that sunday schedulele. there no other alerts or changes that i know of right now for vta bar or caltrain, kris and laura. all right. double duty. thanks. well, do you know about what do you know about the water that is coming out of your tap? start with this baseline of either. this is what i know is in my water and is veryy importa to take out, or these are the unknown things that i want to be sure i can take out. next on today in the bay, we talk with an expert about what might be in your water and how to get it out. we have

conditions are expected today. but first today in the bay's bob redell live near the scene of that fire near antioch. bob, any updates on containment? 50% contained. even though you can see behind me. the fire is out. we're on mallard court. this is a neighborhood here in the foothills of antioch, the largest intersection near here. just to give you some point of reference is somersville and james donlon. the fire started back behind us and went up and ended up in this canyon. so again, 290 acres are burned. and you can see it came very close to this woman's home here. she just came outside. she doesn't want to be on camera, but she was offering to show us just how close it came to her back. it didn't burn your house, did i get your fence. didn't get your fence. okay, good. so anyways, it came very close to these homes. no homes were burned. we know some backyard fences were destroyed and there was an evacuation order. but that evacuation order has been lifted. you can take some. take a look at this video of what the fire looked like last night. it started around 7:00 again. burned 290 acres, fueled by the

dry grass, strong wind gusts. again, no homes burned. some backyard fences were lost. people who live uin this area, they had to be evacuated. at one point, as i said, i were told some residents were transported out of the area with symptoms of things like smoke inhalation. the fire department says it will be keeping an eye on this area to make sure nothing reignites. again, 50% contained. earlier in the morning, i was able to see, i beeve, some fire trucks up here in the hills. i was in the dark. there's also a line of pink fire retardant about a block or two behind us. gives you a sense of what cal fire had to do. the aircraft coming in here just to protect those homes. so was the point is, no homes were burned. but it was a very serious situation. hence the reason why there was that airdrop. now, because the conditions are so hot, dry and gusty. pg&e is warning about the possibility of public safety power shut offs as soon as today. for parts of contra costa county where i'm at, parts of alameda county south of us, and a small sliver of santa clara county. now, the utility says
5:33 am
these preemptive power outages would be targeted and largely focused on more rural areas. we spoke with the battalion chief with the livermore-pleasanton fire department. he says that unfortunately, there's a lot of dry grass and new fuels for wildfires right now because of the heavy rains we received in the winter. with the absence of rain this spring and the volume of rain that we got throughout the year, the fuels are already dry, as you can tell by the grass around us, and we just want to make sure people are extra vigilant. yeah, again, pg&e is not called for a public safety power shut off. this is only a warning. but if it does happen, the utility says it would be fewer than 1000 customers and those people would be notified in advance if they haven't been warned already. reporting live here in antioch. bob redell today in the bay. boy, you can really see how dry it is out there. thanks for the update, bob. so let's talk about the wind conditions this morning, checking in with
5:34 am
forecaster cinthia pimentel who's been monitoring that for us. yeah, right now it is still breezy, but it is that typical overnight recovery that we see. so there through the delta, concord, antioch area about 12 to about 25 mile an hour winds of course at the floor level doesn't feel as gusty. but the areas to watch as we go on for today will of course be those hilltops and also out there towards the coast. notice the contouring changes a little bit as we go to areas like bodega bay, point reyes, down through san francisco and continuing towards our driest and warmer spots of the bay area. as we go through today, also into the afternoon. and that's when they tend to break out. so that's an area to, of course, remain vigilant as we go through today and also into tomorrow. we paint this out to a wider picture of the bay and zoom it on in into friday. we are still looking at those gusty winds staying with us. so that fire threat, although the winds are the main concern for now, those temperatures are going to be cooling down as we go on into today and tomorrow, so i'm not

napa and then in the sonoma valley. let's do 82 in santa rosa for today. so just keeping an eye on those windy conditions that we've been talking about all morning long and just doing your part, watching out for any possible starts of those fires. with the breezy afternoons, it's going to get breezy and cooler as we go on into tomorrow. there's a little bit of some late season rain up there towards the pacific northwest, so if you were heading for some road trips or even visiting friends and family up there to towards oregon and washington, that will be some of those showers that we watch on through as the heat from yesterday keeps on pushing out into other parts of further east from us and into next week, not really looking at any big changes. we still look at those seasonable showers there through the sierra. so if you're heading there early, maybe even for the 4th of july holiday, i don't know. you've got some free time on your hands. just expect some on and off showers now as we take it on through the next couple of days, there isn't any extreme heat. let's take a look at napa. over the next ten days, we will go to some upper 70s and 80s
5:54 am
comfortable through the weekend. not bad. just watch for a little bit of some warmer weather as we go on into the second half of next week, so those changes not really going to be felt as far as aside from the windy conditions through the city over the next couple of days, temperatures staying in those mid to upper 60s and just nice and comfortable. a little bit less of that wind going on into next week as far as our inland valleys. we'll call some mid to upper 70s for juneteenth. summer officially beginning tomorrow, although we said it will feel a little bit more spring like late spring into the weekend. not bad. upper 70s and 80s will carry us as we go on into monday, tuesday and wednesday as well. taking a look at some of our traffic cameras, golden gate bridge. we see a little bit of some patchy fog there, but overall clear. we talked about the changes. san mateo bridge tonight. those one on one off ramps in san mateo. so watch the sign for some detours, some drive times for you over our bay area bridges. everybody looking good from richmond bay bridge. san mateo shouldn't take you more than ten 11 minutes at tops. back to you. all right.
