6:00 pm
almaden lake holiday fireworks show just got too popular for the park. last year during the show, this fire broke out in the foothills nearby and fire crews had trouble responding because of the large crowd leaving that show. so the local city councilman called off the fireworks. shock and disappointment. this is a traditio that for the last, my gosh, 11 years that i've lived here, i would just take out my lawn chair and put it outside and watch the show every 4th of july. so it's sad. fire officials say current conditions are deceptively dangerous. it's a pretty dry wind. it's not the typical red flag warnings that we do get, but with this low humidity and this wind, like we had in antioch yesterday in san jose the day before, we have potentials for vegetation fires. so we're really asking people to be wary and be careful out there. a board member for a local homeowner's association is
6:01 pm
worried the cancellation will push more people to consider putting on or attending illegal fireworks shows in neighborhoods. let's say there was 10 or 20 families that were going to go to that show, and now it's canceled. well, we'll just go down to that area and watch the fireworks go off there. san jose still has shows scheduled at lake cunningham and the san jose giants game. they're done in areas that where we can preplan that we can control. we'll usually have some sort of fire suppression resources there in case something happens when it's just somebody's doing something in their front yard that, you know, that that can become problematic. fire officials also want to remind the public that while it's important to remember safety concerns during 4th of july, here in the bay area, fire season is basically year round in san jose. robert honda, nbc bay area news. robert. thank you. also tonight, a half a dozen people forced out of their homes in contra costa county. a wind fueled fire swept through

several structures. it started just before 2 p.m. in brentwood. look at that smoke there. neighbors believe it may have started in a dry, grassy field, but investigators are still looking into the cause. firefighters say seven structures were damaged, including two homes and three cottage style units. one woman told us she lost everything, including one of her dogs. she says she was eating lunch when she heard her grandson screaming, get out! that's when i looked out the window and there was fire coming from the back. i think it was a grass fire because then i saw the flames. it came. it happened so quick. the flames were already on my window. i lost everything. everything. everything that i own, which wasn't much. sad for that family. the wind driven fire is precisely why pg&e says it's ordered a public safety power shut off in parts of the bay area tonight. nearly 300 people have had their power cut
6:03 pm
in contra costa county. hundreds more were impacted in alameda county, along with a handful of customers in the south bay. let's take a live look outside right now. look at the conditions here. sunny and windy for most of us across the region. you can see that flag in the bottom left of your corner. the american flag right there on our traffic camera. it's whipping just a bit right now. let's bring in our chief meteorologist, jeff ranieri. are we going to see some dangerous conditions as we head to the overnight hours? it's going to be on and off gusty. but really, when we put some perspective on this, it's not the most extreme in terms of wind we've seen out here across the bay area. it's also importing some humidity because there's more of this ocean coastal breeze. so we'll take you to that fire we had this afternoon. and right now we're still seeing some wind gusts up to about 24. they obviously, as we mentioned, got this under control. but they'll be watching the hot spots. could get gusts overnight up to 35 tomorrow. wind gusts of about 30. thankfully temperatures have also cooled off down into the 70s so that will be helping. now, we do have this wind on and off here through the bay area right now. these on and off
6:04 pm
gusts. again, it's more of this ocean breeze. tomorrow morning the strongest gusts will be at the coastline up to 36 in san francisco. everybody w will get into a little pop here. some wind as we head through tomorrow afternoon. again, the strongest through the coast. we'll talk more about the chilly weather we have coming in for parts of the bay area tomorrow. i'll see you back here in about 15. okay. thank you very much, jeff. a new policy in san jose that targets people who rent rvs to unhoused residents will now include people that sleep in their cars. the city council voted 9 to 1 tuesday to approve the van loading policy. it bans advertising and renting out rvs to anyone intending to use them as a home. rvs are also prohibited from parking and used for sleeping on city streets and private property. city streets are public streets. they need to be accessible to everyone. we need to maintain them as clean and safe spaces for everyone. incentivizing people or encouraging people to pay rent to live in a vehicle on city

streets works against everything we're doing to end homelessness in our city. this policy comes on the heels of the city's rv tow away zones program. san jose plans to select up to 30 temporary tow away zones and ten permanent sites to clear rvs. that is scheduled to start sometime this year. more trouble for a high profile criminal. matthew mueller has been convicted and sentenced for a fourth time for kidnaping and sexual assault. mueller's crimes are detailed in the netflix documentary american nightmare. he was first convicted in 2017 for the high profile kidnaping of denise huskins from her home in vallejo. earlier this year, he was given life sentences for two home invasions and sexual assaults in mountain view and palo alto in 2009. today in sacramento, mueller pleaded guilty to a 1993 kidnaping and sexual assault. the district attorney says mueller, who was 16 at the time, threatened two campers near folsom lake, tying up the male camper and sexually
6:06 pm
assaulting the woman. mueller is also still facing kidnaping for ransom charges in contra costa county. an unsolved murder in san francisco is back in the headlines. nine years ago, a young baseball player was murdered while playing pokemon go. the fbi is now on this case. it happened on august 6th of 2016 at san francisco's aquatic park. calvin riley was shot as he walked the promenade with his friend. the gunman got away. riley was a promising junior college basall player who graduated from san mateo high school. he was at the wrong place at the wrong time. i miss it all. i was basically torn our family apart. it's been a nightmare for, you know, going on nine years on august 6th and, you know. it's been heart wrenching. you just have this hole in your heart forever. and
6:07 pm
that. yeah. can never, never be filled. the fbi is now bringing new clues and hope to the riley family. among the new clues, this new sketch of a person of interest. we'll have much more on this story coming up on our 7:00 news. the la dodgers say they blocked ice agents from entering their stadium grounds today, but ice says they were not there to do an operation. this happened this morning. dodgers say a group of agents in black suvs with homeland security uniforms showed up across the street. agents asked to enter the parking lot and were denied entry. unclear exactly why the agents wanted to enter, but the appearance of federal agents comes less than 24 hours after the dodgers announced plans to assist communities impacted by immigration enforcement. protesters also met the agents outside the parking lot, began chanting things like ice out of la. ice, denied its agents were at the stadium. the office of homeland security tweeted that customs border patrol vehicles were in the stadium parking lot

6:20 pm
still had some 90s at this time last night across some of the inland valleys and san francisco 58. we'll stay with these nice temperatures, all because of the way the weather pattern is beginning to change for us. and what you'll see in the satellite radar picture here is the storm track. see how that just kind of dips to the south that's coming in with this area of low pressure that has cooler air with it. so that's making it much nicer out there. but the little bit of an issue we're getting into is this area of low pressure and high pressure so close it's helping to really crank up the wind at the coastline. it's this strong ocean breeze gusts up to about 40mph tomorrow, so it's not a typical dry weather red flag fire warning event. it's more of that strong ocean breeze. the good effect of that though is it does import humidity. however, fire danger is still elevated. so nonetheless here we'll see winds tomorrow morning anywhere from 15 to about 40. tomorrow afternoon everybody gets in on a quick pop of some wind. we'll
6:21 pm
stay with some on and off gusts into saturday's forecast sunday. overall, if you're doing any planning, looks like the best day of the weekend. less in the way of wind and pretty comfortae out there. so we'll begin tomorrow morning down in the 50s across the bay area again. as that wind kicks up, it will be kind of blustery, so make sure to have that jacket 54 here in the east bay, 52 in the north bay. daytime highs coming in near average to a little bit below. so down here in san jose to leave us to 74. cupertino 73, oakland chilly 68. danville 74 for the coastal area 60 and half moon bay and palo alto. we should manage some low 70s san francisco, 50s and 60s. and for the north bay, we're staying in the 70s for most of you on the 7-day forecast right here in sf, we'll hang on to 60s next several days. summer officially begins tomorrow night at 742 in the evening, and we'll see some low to mid 80s through this weekend. okay, we got some time. let's go. let's go see if we can get the storm, the chopper
