at six. the ceasefire in the middle east, already in limbo, israel overnight vows to continue its attacks on iran. this is after it calls a complete violation and we are live in washington. with president trump's harsh new response to both countries, plus the fate of a sheriff up in the air in a matter of hours. san mateo county supervisors debate removing sheriff christina corpus. how a key vote today may impact the direction of this political standoff. it's kind of scary. you think about it. even, you know, a man out here by himself could get attacked from the back. you know, they can. they got access to your account. they're going to drain it out. string of robberies at atms in the east bay. the new warning going out to customers as police search for a group of violent attackers. this is today in the bay. here we go tuesday mning. and good morning to you. i'm
6:01 am
marcus washington and i'm laura garcia. welcome back marcus, you say it like, hey, it's the start of our week. let's go. all right, well, we're going through the week. kerry's got a look at our forecast for today. and it looks nice. it does look nice. it's going to be a little bit cooler compared to yesterday especially in the valleys where it did get a little toasty during the middle of the afternoon. but we're seeing the thicker fog lingering at the coast, and it's going to be a cloudy morning in san francisco, a breezy and mild day for the rest of the bay area. it will still be a little bit hazy. we're still getting some drifts of smoke from the canadian and alaskan wildfires coming in, and then this weekend we warm it up, but not significantly. so we're headed up to 73 in dublin. in fremont today, the high will be 79 in los gatos, while santa rosa will see a high of 80 today, mid 60s in san francisco with mid 70s in palo alto. and for tomorrow, once again it comes up about three to possibly five degrees across the bay area. i'll be tracking that with an update in a few minutes.
6:02 am
laura marcus sounds good. thanks so much, kari. well, that breaking news overnight. some tough new words from president trump after what appears to be a collapse in the hours old ceasefire deal between israel and iran. in fact, here's the president saking out about three hours ago on the white house lawn. his comments here are directed towards israel before departing to the netherlands for a nato summit. i'm not happy with israel. you know, when i say, okay, now you have 12 hours, you don't go out in the first hour and just drop everything you have on them. so i'm not happy with them. i'm not happy with iran either, but i'm really unhappy if israel is going out this morning because of one rocket that didn't land that was shot, perhaps by mistake, that didn't land. i'm not happy about that. you know what we have? we basically have two countries that have been fighting so long and so hard that they don't know what the they're doing. those comments come after israel fired new missiles at iran overnight in

response to a deadly iranian airstrike in southern israel today in the bay's alice barr joins us live in washington. alice, the president is also posting on truth social quite often this morning. lauren marcus and we have been following rapid fire developments in the latest. president trump says a cease fire between israel and iran is back in effect, and that israel is not going ahead with a planned attack on iran. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu's office has now confirmed that israel refrained from further attacks following a trump netanyahu phone call on air force one, directly following that tough talk that you played out the latest in rapid developments this morning. a cease fire between israel and iran appearing to unravel almost as soon as it began in the early morning hours. israel accusing iran of violating it by launching missiles and promising to respond forcefully with powerful strikes against targets

airstrikes on iranian nuclear sites over the weekend, the president saying the u.s. expected and countered what he called iran's very weak response and that no americans were harmed. trump administration officials pressing iran not to try to rebuild its nuclear program, amid reports the white house disputes that iran m have moved some equipment and uranium from its nuclear sites before the u.s. strikes. the developments in the middle east will take center stage among global allies, with president trump on his way right now to the nato summit in the netherlands. laura. thank you. alex. well, alex, i want to ask you quickly before we go. i know a lot of those commercial flights in the airlines. they're diverting more flights to the middle east. what do we know about that? yeah, this comes after those u.s. strikes on iran and yesterday's counter strikes in qatar. more than 20 planes

bound for doha were diverted, while four headed to dubai were turned around, british airways announced yesterday it's canceling dohalights through wednesday due to safety concerns. other international airlines, including air france and finnair, have put a fluid pause on destinations in the middle east for the same reason. back to you. everything for the safety of those travelers there. well, alice barr for us this morning out of washington. alice. thank you. and of course, we will continue to monitor the latest developments, both on air as well as online at nbcbayarea.com. you can also scan that qr code there on your screen to download our free nbc bay area app and get any breaking news updates sent straight to your device. well, happening today, peninsula leaders are expected to hold a key vote to determine the future of embattled san mateo county sheriff christina corpus today in the bay's ginger conejero saab joins us live in redwood city this morning, where a special meeting is getting underway in a couple of hours. so exactly what the board. what are they considering here? ginger. good morning. laura. the
6:07 am
board today will consider whether or not they will accept a recommendation from the county's probation officer. that officer john keane has reviewed an earlier independent investigation, as well as subsequent appeals from the sheriff's legal team. now, this morning, his recommendation will be front and center. the five person board will vote on whether to accept it, and at least four must vote to accept the recommendation. if two supervisors vote against it, the sheriff may keep her job. so this is the latest development in what has become a very public battle between those who allege corpus and the sheriff's office were plagued by corruption, nepotism and racial and homophobic slurs, allegations she has repeatedly denied. a notice of intent to remove was issued against the sheriff earlier this month, but only after voters in a special election gav the board the authority to remove her. now, while documents from the independent investigation, as well as appeals from sheriff
6:08 am
corpus have remained secret. earlier this month, she once again addressed these efforts to remove her from office. they have a motive. they clearly want me out of office for speaking up for what is right. i am here today because standing tall. because i know what is right. i've done nothing wrong. crime is down. this rhetoric of public safety is at risk is an agenda by certain individuals, certain groups. so, laura, that special meeting will begin at eight. that recommendation from the probation officer will be at the heart of all of this. and the board will then decide whether or not they will accept or refuse that recommendation. we will bring you the latest from that both on air and online. laura, back to you. all right. a lot to continue to follow there. thank you. ginger. well, atm users in the tri-valley are being warned to be on alert.
6:09 am
this is after a recent string of violent robberies. police say a group of thieves wearing face masks and dark clothing are behind several atm robberies. this is over the past week in pleasanton. investigators say that in each case, the victims were assaulted before those thieves took their cash. police last night did not respond in time for our request for more suspect information, but residents are concerned. it's super scary. you don't think that it's going to happen here because it's usually really safe. so that's kind of shocking to hear. it's concerning. i don't the last thing i want to do is get robbed when i'm going to get cash or get, you know, drop off deposits like i do for my work. pleasanton police are boosting patrols in the area surrounding bank parking lots. they're also encouraging people to be aware of their surroundings at all times, and try to avoid drawing large amounts of cash. well, new at six pg&e appears to be boosting its security to protect the utility's ceo, cal matters reports a second person is being

6:11 am
perfect 75 in san jose and in palo alto. and it will also be 75 in novato. and then getting out on the roads this morning, i've been showing that we are seeing a fairly light flow of traffic, despite the fact that it's tuesday, even on 580 coming through dublin, we are seeing it looking good. and across the san mateo bridge we may begin to see things slowing down, stacking up a little bit more within the next 20 minutes. a look at the richmond san rafael bridge is also flowing very well. much better than yesterday. and a look at the east bay drive times from westbound 80. from highway four to the bay bridge. it's slowing down just a bit, takes about 22 minutes. everything else is at speed, but we are getting a new accident. as you approach the dumbarton bridge or just getting past there going southbound on 880. i'll have an update on that in a few minutes. marcus and laura. all right. thanks, kari. trouble in paradise. at least for the businesses that rely on tourism. looks like your staard trip to hawaii these days has fewer takers. coming up on today in
6:12 am
the bay. travel experts break down the changing patterns, bringing hawaii's peak tourist season to a crawl. and as a kid, i hated it when adults said back to school. i mean, it's june for goodness sakes, but we got to talk about that. let's talk about the future. see what's going on there with the numbers. wall street pleased that tenuous cease fire seems to be holding. you're watching today in the bay. as we get a look at walnut creek. it's a beautiful sunrise here. it's nice and clear and our temperatures are in the mid 50s with a light wind. we'll see it clearing out in a gradual warm up, but an overall comfortable day with highs in the upper 70s here. now we're going to see it warming up as we approach the end of the week. so we'll talk about that in a few minutes. but right now if you're heading toward the bay bridge we are starting to see it slowing down. metering lights areren. we're seeing that backup there as you approach the toll plaza, and it takes about 16 minutes to get across the bay bridge, but the entire span looks like it's slowing down. so we'll be watching out for that, as well as the traffic flowing through the tri-valley. i'll have an update on all of this coming up next. well good morning. very happy tuesday to you. stocks are up. oil down on that ceasefire news. it is a shaky ceasefire

though. shares in hims were crushed on monday. they sell pharmaceuticals online. the maker of wegovy says it will no longer supply hims with weight loss drugs. after years of promises, tesla finally put robotaxis on the streets of austin. that stock jumped 8%. not without problems. a lot of people put video of their driverless rides on social media, and the national traffic highway safety administration took note of a number of errors, like speeding and sudden stops. safety inspectors confirming to us they are in contact with tesla. to ask for more information. airlines were hoping they could get back to regular schedules, regular flight paths, but again, that cease fire very tenuous. qantas says one of its flights had to turn back to australia, making a 15 hour flight to nowhere. the flight was supposed to go from perth to europe. instead, it went from the western airspace of iran. over india, rather told

not to fly over iran and turned back. so perth, the perth. back here at home, jetblue says it will integrate airtags into its app so you can share your location with a baggage worker. a lot of people put airtags in their bags, but if you're in denver and your bags in boise and you're the only person who can look at the airtag, that doesn't help as much. head of the fed jay powell will be on capitol hill today and tomorrow at prescheduled hearings before congress. he'll explain why the fed has kept interest rates higher onears of inflation from tariffs and the war in the middle east. now target, though, says it will keep the same prices on the back to school items the same as they were last year, and will keep deals like its $5 backpack and then offer new deals like a 35 cent notebook as well. and again, i apologize for. they just announced this, but i apologize to every child who's like, it's june, make make the man in the

suit. stop talking about back to school. exactly. well, hopefully the kids are sleeping in. yeah. that's true. likely. very likely. scott, they might like this vacation. there you go. yeah, but a twist here. they like the man in this suit. but let's talk about the vacations here, because you know what? they are hitting a summer low this year. we're talking about over in hawaii. june through august is normally the peak season there. but travel experts say that tourism is down. we spoke with one owner of hawaii, aloha travel, and he says that his bookings are 10% lower this compared to just last year. i think one of the biggest challenges right now is the shorter booking window. i think people are waiting a little bit longer than they normally would to book. normally, people wait eight, 6 to 8 months in advance. now they're waiting like 30 days to book. now, he says that this is the slowest june he's seen in his 22 years in the business. and despite the higher cost of flights and fuel, he's hoping
6:19 am
that tourism rebounds in the coming months. well, a lot of you may have noticed one of the key members of our today in the bay team is missing in action. our dear friend and coworker, mike inouye. currently recovering after a really big health scare, mike is allowing us to share with you that he recently underwent heart bypass surgery. he started to not feel very well at work and thankfully he didn't ignore the signs. his instincts told him to get checked out. he eventually posted something about it on social media. this is what you're seeing right here. mike is continuing to heal on his road to recovery, so we don't know when he's going to come back with a team. but we certainly wan mike to know that your other family here at today in the bay eagerly awaits your return, and we're wishing him the speediest of recoveries. yeah. big time. you know, got to listen to those signs. yeah. he was telling me that his neck and his shoulder was hurting a bit. and those aren't usually the typical symptoms that you expect
6:20 am
with something with your heart. but if there's anything that feels off, you definitely should just go get it checked out, because it's not always what you think it is. absolutely. yeah, particularly about men and, you know, men my age. not maybe yours, but it's so important. and men in particular bless mike for not but men in particular tend to. yeah. it's just to put it in aspirin and women. it's not the stereotypical thing either. so you really got to pay attention to your health. so mike, you're on the road to recovery. we miss you immensely. we really do. but what a way to take a break from us. is that what you had to do? you know he's sleeping, right? yes. yeah. we love you, mike. we do, we do. we miss him? we really do. all right, well, now that he's, you know, at home, resting, hopefully he has some nice weather to get out. you know, i talked to him yesterday and he did tell me he gets out to walk the dog at least. that's good. yeah. and the weather has been so nice. and so we're going to continue that streak today and
6:21 am
even bring it down a few degrees. here's a live look outside in oakland. we're starting out with our usual clouds. and it's at 55 degrees. and we'll see these clouds linger through about 11 to 12:00. so with the clouds hanging around longer, there will be a very gradual warm up there, and a lot of our temperatures will actually be cooler than normal for this time of year. and in santa rosa, we're four degrees below our typical high for this date. in santa rosa of eight four degrees there. but concord will see about six degrees cooler than average. and then across the rest of the bay area, well below average temperatures today. and we're going to start to see those temperatures coming up a couple of degrees each day, but still going to be very mild. we're up to 75 in pa alto today and 77 tomorrow. in concord. we're going from 80 to 86. and then in santa rosa tomorrow will be at 84 degrees. but then on thursday it's upper 80s for parts of the north bay, even some low 90s. fairfield will hit 90 on thursday, but we're still in the 70s in san
6:22 am
jose. but notice the south county, how those temperatures start to climb into the mid to upper 80s so 80s here in our warmer spots. but then take a look at the rest of the country. about half of the population is dealing with some extreme and dangerous heat. take a look at chicago today. 91 will be the high. new york city 100 degrees. even boston close to 100 degrees. so this is very unusual. and we're seeing this big heat dome causing that heat to continue. so here we're looking at some seasonable weather that does start to gradually get a little bit warmer as we approach the weekend. by saturday we'll see a high of 90 degrees and then upper 80s on sunday and a little bit cooler early next week for san francisco. this is what's moderating our temperatures. you're going to stay cool. a lot of clouds and fog, but we're staying in the 60s into the weekend. i want to give you a look at what's happening for the morning commute. we are seeing the low clouds over the golden gate bridge, but at least for the drive, visibility is clear.
6:23 am
morning clouds in san jose, a light flow of traffic. and then as we take a look at the richmond san rafael bridge, very slow getting across. you might want to go ahead and leave now. our east bay drive times are slowing down as you approach the bay bridge. coming on westbound 80 takes about 24 minutes. and we're also seeing a very slow flow flow of traffic all the way across the bay bridge this morning. and then there is an incident on the 880 as you approach both the san mateo and dunbarton bridges. and we are seeing that accident as you're moving into fremont on 80. so i'll keep an eye on that. back to you. thanks so much. next here on today in the bay, nbc bay area responds. attention travelers. you might be eligible for a second passport. i'm consumer investigator chris kamara i'll sho

one u.s. passport, but you may be eligible for another. i know you're probably thinking. like what? well, consumer investigator chris moore shows us how. you don't have to be a spy to get a second passport. the state department says there are a couple scenarios where you can apply to get a second passport. for example, if you travel a lot and need multiple visas for multiple countries all at the same time. you can apply for a second passport or if a country will deny you entry simply because you have a stamp from one of its enemies in your passport, you can apply for a second passport. the application is online on the state
6:27 am
department website. you have to write up a statement about why you need a second passport. but don't worry, here's the state department sample. it's only two paragraphs long. you'll also have to provide a new passport photo and pay $130 unless you want expedited service, which is an extra $60. the state department says that expedited service is 2 to 3 weeks. regular service is 4 to 6 weeks. thanks, chris. a lot more ahead at 630, including a ceasese fe in the middle east already in jeopardy. our kris sanchez is in the newsroom. if you ask who violated the cease fire, president trump says both sides will talk about what that means. and later, is california ready for the big one? we're going to show you a new state of the art technology that is teaching and testing weather buildings and see if they can survive a major earthquake. we'll be right back.
6:30 am
ridiculous. breaking news right now. at 630, a cease fire between israel and iran teetering on the edge. we have new reaction this morning from president trump and the vow of retaliation from israel. and the race for city council in san jose is set to come to an end. we're going to break down the candidates vying for votes in today's special election. plus, san francisco getting ready for
6:31 am
pride weekend. but this morning, a warning to commuters. the street closures already set to start ahead of the festivities. this is today in the bay. good tuesday morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia and i'm marcus washington. time to get a look at that forecast for you this morning. but before meteorologist kari hall has a look at what we can expect. those temperatures looking pretty good there at the start of the day. it's starting out nice. it's cool. this is our usual morning start with clouds near the coast. and we're already starting to see some of the low clouds near the coast rolling into parts of the valley. so as we're getting a look at our current temperatures, it's in the mid 50s for walnut creek, san francisco at 54 degrees, and it's 57 in palo alto and in san jose. and speaking of san jose, we're going to see the clouds continue for the next couple of hours and then clear out. but that will keep those temperatures down. we're actually going to be cooler than normal with highs headed for the
6:32 am
mid 70s here. will be in the low 80s for the warmest spots in the santa clara valley, as well as the inland east bay, while our north bay temperatures will be as hot as the low 90s for ukiah and clear lake. so i'll be tracking changes in our forecast coming up in a few minutes. laura marcus, thank you very much. kari. well, that breaking news this morning, the delicate cease fire between israel and iran that appears to be falling apart. although within the last two hours, president trump said it remains in effect. a lot of back and forth this morning today in the bay's kris sanchez following the latest developments from our newsroom. this is really kind of been a roller coaster that people across the world are concerned about and watching right now, because people are watching from other places in the world. imagine there are these different time zones. you're waking up, you're going to sleep with different news. it's hard to keep it straight. but, you know, these two countries went from firing msiles. now israel and iran lobbing accusations, each side accusing the other of violating the cease fire. then around 4:00 this morning, our
6:33 am
time before heading to the nato summit in the netherlands, president trump said both sides violated it. i think they violated it, i don't think i'm not sure they did it intentionally. they couldn't reign people back. and then about a half hour later, the president wrote on social media, israel is not going to attack iran. all planes will turn around and head home while doing a friendly plane wave to iran. no one will be hurt. the cease fire is in effect now. trump announced that cease fire hours after iran launched an airstrike on the air base in qatar, where thousands of u.s. troops are stationed. as u.s. lawmakers go back and forth about whether the president overstepped his authority in launching those bunker busting assaults on iran's nuclear facilities, people in the bay area with family connections in the region are stuck in the middle. the past week has been absolutely devastating. trying to reach
6:34 am
family and friends across iran. i don't know what to say till till we see the development and, you know, hopefully this will be a complete ending. now, in the last hour, the president posted, iran will never rebuild their nuclear facilities, but the director general of the un's nuclear watchdog group said that no one can confirm the damage nor the location of iran's nuclear materials at this point. marcus. thank you. chris. well, happening today, voters in san jose will decide the race for district three. city council seat latino coalition of silicon valley executive director gabby chavez. lopez is taking on san jose planning commissioner anthony tortillas in the runoff. tortillas beat out the mayor's chief of staff, matthew quevedo, for a second place run. this is just by six votes now. district three covers most of san jose's downtown corridor. those polls open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m, and
6:35 am
that runoff is for the seat vacated last fall by omar torres. he resigned one day before being arrested on child sex charges. he has since pleaded no contest and is awaiting sentencing. recovery efforts at lake tahoe areow complete after teams retrieved the body of the final unaccounted for victim in saturday's boating tragedy, eight people died. rescuers managed to save more than two more victims from the same boat that capsized during a surprise storm. the names of those killed has not been released, but we've learned at least some are from the bay area. we spoke with one aquatic safety expert. he says the conditions that day, combined with the chilly waters, created a recipe for disaster. it's exceedingly cold, much colder than any other lakes i've been around in the united states and abroad, so that even if people are wearing life jackets at the time, hypothermia can still set in and kill people before they actually drown. it's
6:36 am
still not clear if the drowning victims were wearing life jackets, the coast guard says waves reached around eight feet during the storm. a live look in san francisco for us this morning, which is now getting ready for this weekend's pride celebration. in fact, the first street closures will take effect at 9 a.m. today. now, this is one this is going to be near the city hall. this is near city hall there along grove street between doctor carlton b, goodlett place and larkin street. now, of course, many of those other streets will close later this week. and the big parade is planned for sunday. meteorologist kari hall of course, tracking the weather there and kara compared to the east coast heat right there so far this summer has been quite pleasant. it has, and it's been very mild for us. and we're kind of just locked in this pattern, which is of course great for us, but not so good for the east coast. and we're starting out with our nice, cool morning temperatures in the low to mid 50s as you're heading out. and the fog will linger in san
6:37 am
francisco with the breeze coming off of that. it's also helping to cool off the inland valleys as well. so we're staying in the 50s through most of the morning and only briefly making it into the low 60s with some peeks of sunshine. and for a lot of spots, we're going to be cooler than what our average high is for this date. in santa rosa, we're about four degrees cooler than average, about six degrees cooler than average in concord. in livermore, we are seeing those temperatures eight degrees cooler than normal there, and in san jose five degrees lower. and as we go into the next few days, we only bring it up a couple of degrees each day. so it's still going to be nice and mild tomorrow as well. let's's get ot on the roadways this morning. i'm giving you an update on the bay bridge that is really backed up. we saw the metering lights come on about an hour ago, and then we've had a couple of accidents on the span of the bay bridge, so time to leave now. the golden gate bridge is looking good. visibility is clear all the way across, and we'll continue to see that light flow of traffic as well. for the
6:38 am
south bay on 101, the richmond san rafael bridge is very slow moving. not as slow as yesterday, but still definitely seeing some of the issues there. and for the san mateo dumbarton bridges they're flowing well, but we are once again seeing it jammed up all the way across the bay bridge. so time to grab those keys and go back to you, or just sit back and relax and watch today in the bay. well, preparing california for the next big earthquake. we're going to show you the unique test using a simulator that mimics the shaking many of the bay area endured during the 1989 loma prieta earthquake, and we'll continue our coverage of that tenuous ceasefire between iran and israel. let's go out to the big board this morning, see how wall street is reacting. they think that ceasefire will likely hold. oil is down soon enough. you may not have to head to the coast to catch some waves. a first look at a proposed bay area surf park, nowhere near the

6:42 am
so it's a very delicate cease fire. president trump actually swearing as he talked to reporters on his way to the helicopter this morning, saying both countntries hadeen fighting for so long they didn't know what the heck they were doing. and posting this to social media. israel, do not drop those bombs. if you do, it's a major violation. bring your pilots home now. and it appears that's exactly what israel did. or at least that's what the president tweeted out. iran releasing video of what it says is the launch of its missiles against an american air base in qatar yesterday morning. nobody hurt. iran apparently told the white house ahead of time it was going to attack president trump, praising the iranians for their muted response to america's bombing. president trump on his way now to the nato summit in the nethlands, where member countries are expected to announce big increases in the amount of money that they spend on their own defense, something that president trump has been pushing for. there's a debate in
6:43 am
washington and there there always is at times like these about how much power a president should have to attack another country. republicans have been on both sides of that debate, and so too have democrats. here's republican speaker johnson talking about the possible end of iran's nuclear program. and house minority leader jeffries wanting more information. it's really a big sigh of relief here on capitol hill. we certainly hope and pray and trust that iran will end its nuclear enrichment program. they'll heed the calls of the rest of the world, and that we can have peace in the middle east and peace in israel. it's a really, really big day. historic. the trump administration has a responsibility to come to congress, justify its actions, for which we've seen no evidence to justify its offensive strike in iran. and we also don't even know how effective the strike has been. now, jeffries is right. the war powers act of 73,

earthquakes, including the magnitude 6.9 loma prieta quake. we imparted a peak input acceleration on the order of 0.3 g's. that's 30% of gravity and one axis, and almost 0.5 g's in the other axis. so, you know, real earthquake motions and almost four times the amount of force near the roof. and visually, this building passed the test. it's good that they that the building did not move that much. when you don't see hardly any movement and you know that it's a large earthquake, well, we're doing something right. in the coming days, weeks and months ahead, ucsd researchers will dig deeper into the data. see all those wires? they're attached to roughly 1000 sensors throughout the structure that measure response quantities in building materials. displacement, acceleration, strain forces, and so on. one aspect of what is called seismic resilient structures is not only

that they don't collapse and save lives, but that they can be reused very, you know, soon after the earthquakes and repaired easily. the ultimate goal is to improve building codes when it comes to cold form steel structures like this. current codes limit cold formed steel to six stories. this test could increase that to ten stories. the lead professor on this project says cold formed steel is lighter, more cost effective and easier to work with in earthquake prone regions. tightening up your structural system is going to be critical because newton's law doesn't go away. force is mass times acceleration. if you reduce the mass, then you've automatically reduced the forces. that's really what we want to do. as structural designers, we're looking for an innovative building system that we can use in the united states that can work in earthquake country, as well as everywhere else, can be constructed quickly, can be sustainable. you know, all the things that we
