tv   Today in the Bay  NBC  June 26, 2025 6:00am-7:00am PDT

6:00 am
has a new meeting in the works. we're live in washington with the latest assessments after the u.s. strike in iran and the growing concerns here at home about an expanding conflict in the middle east, also demanding justice. the rally is set for this morning for a 15 year old boy killed in a valentine's day stabbing. this is today in the bay. good thursday morning. thanks so much for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia, and i'm marcus washington. time to get you caughup on that forecast. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking all the information we need to know. so, kari, how's it looking? it looks great for us this morning. starting out cloudy and cool. we know that those temperatures will start to spread out across the bay area with our microclimates. checking out san rafael. it looks good. it's mostly cloudy for now, but it will be clearing out within the next couple of hours and temperatures going from low 50s to mid 70s by noon. so you see how fast that warm up happens as we head for the low 80s there
6:01 am
today. it will be 69 in san francisco and 75 in oakland. and in dublin today, 79 degrees, also 79 in san jose, the inland valleys a little warmer this afternoon. and that trend continues through saturday. so we'll check out that weekend forecast in a few minutes. all right. we'll check back with you. kari. we do begin with a live look at the white house and developments in the middle east. president trump is promising new u.s. tech talks with iran on its nuclear ambitions and lasting peace with israel. the ceasefire is holding, but it remains on shaky ground overnight. iran's supreme leader is declaring victory over israel while delivering a, quote, slap in the face to washington. in his first comments surrounding the u.s. airstrike on his country's nuclear facilities. today in the bay's alice barr joins us live from washington this morning. and alice, u.s. lawmakers expected to get an update from the white house later today. now that the president is back from this week's nato summit. that's right. and they have certainly a
6:02 am
lot of questions they want answered, particularly about whether anything was moved out of these facilities before the strikes. we've just been hearing a pretty detailed assessment from the department of defense going through exactly all of the planning, the years of modeling and preparations that went into these strikes. and the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff said that all six weapons at fordo wen exactly where they were intended to go, and that the defense department believes they did the job that they were developed to do. president trump back in washington after the nato summit looking to extend a diplomatic win with the israel iran ceasefire into talks with iran. we're going to talk to them next week with iran. we may sign an agreement, i don't know the president downplaying the necessity of signing a deal, insisting u.s. airstrikes on iranian nuclear sites already
6:03 am
accomplished the goal of preventing iran from developing a nuclear weapon. i said iran will not have nuclear. well, we blew it up. it's blown up to kingdom come. he's pushing back forcefully on a preliminary assessment by the u.s. defense intelligence agency estimating iran's nuclear program was delayed by a matter of months. they presented a report that wasn't finished. yes. they didn't see it. all they can do is take a guess. defense secretary hagel said the agency had low confidence in its initial assessment. president trump, citing israeli intelligence that the strikes set iran's nuclear capabilities back by many years and rendered the critical underground fordo site inoperable. iran, also acknowledging its nuclear installations, were badly damaged. and the cia director now says credible intelligence indicates iran's nuclear program was severely damaged and would
6:04 am
take years to rebuild. two sources say he is among the top trump officials set to brief senators today who have been pressing for answers. do we know whether the uranium was there? do we know whether the centrifuges were there? what is the state of those facilities? house members due to be briefed tomorrow. to nbc news, along with the senior administration, officials say director of national intelligence tulsi gabbard would not be part of the congressional briefings today. nbc news has previously reported that gabbard has been increasingly marginalized after testifying in march that iran had not made a decision to build a nuclear weapon. laura, alice, before you go, i understand we're getting some new insight on how americans feel about the u.s. airstrike on iran. yeah, laura, the move is drawing mixed reaction. nbc news and surveymonkey are releasing new findings this morning, showing nearly 80% of americans say they
6:05 am
are concerned that the military involvement could escalate into a wider conflict in the middle east. one of the key questions raised by critics is whether the president should have consulted congress before taking military action, and according to the poll, 60% of americans believe president trump should have sought congressional authorization before launching air strikes. 40% say he was right to act unilaterally. laura. interesting to see. alice, thank you for the latest. well, happening today, a protest outside of juvenile hall in san jose is where a 13 year old boy accused of using a knife in a deadly valentine's day attack in santana row is due in court for a plea hearing. now the family of the 15 year-old victim demanding justice today in the bay's kris sanchez has been following this case from all angles for us. so, kris, what are those family members calling for today? so obviously, this is a brokenhearted family, marcus, and it's not the first time that the family will rally ahead of a
6:06 am
hearing to call for the harshest charges against that accused 13 year-old. nor will it be the last the family and friends of david gutierrez have gathered at many of the hearings for the five suspects, including those at juvenile hall, where we cannot enter with our cameras, so we can't show you that. they tell us they are going to be outside juvenile hall at 730. once again this morning. their rallying cry is justice for david david gutierrez, the 15 year old from redwood city who was stabbed to death in the heart while on a valentine's day date with his girlfriend at san jose, santana row. only one of those five suspects charged in his death is an adult. that's emmanuel sanchez. damien, you see him there on your screen. he and the four minors all have gang affiliations, according to san jose police, which is one of the reasons that sanchez lopez was denied bail. now three four of the suspects, or rather three of the suspects, were 16 at the time and one seen in surveillance video allegedly stabbing david was just 13 at
6:07 am
the time. now, under california's proposition 57, minors 14 years and older or younger are no longer automatically transferred to adult court. minors 13 and younger cannot be charged as an adult or do serious crime. they can't even go to juvenile hall under any circumstances. david gutierrez is supporters. his family, his loved ones are fighting to change that, calling on lawmakers to make that change for future victims and for themselves as victims. they are calling on this judge to consider the harshest penalty. as that young man enters his plea. they will be at that 13 year olds plea hearing today and at the plea hearing for the 18 year old, which is coming up in august, will also be there. laura, very interesting one to follow. thank you very much, chris. well, here's another follow up for youin a late night vote, the san francisco supervisors budget committee unanimously announced advanced mayor daniel lurie controversial
6:08 am
budget proposal. the mayor overnight issuing a statement announcing the approval. his $16 billion budget plan maintains funding levels for police and fire, but it makes major cuts to areas including housing services, workforce development, public works and legal aid. it is expected to go to the full board next monday, with the end of july being the deadline to have it approved. in mayor lurie statement, he says in part, quote, i am confident that this final budget answers san francisco's call for us to rebuild a safer, cleaner, thriving city. well, speaking of the city, let's take it. one look at one of those iconic places there, the golden gate bridge. you can see there a pretty clear for the most part, but we see some of those clouds hanging around. meteorologist kari hall has been following those conditions and beautiful shots pretty much everywhere this morning. yes. so that was below looking at the golden gate bridge. this is looking from above all of the clouds and fog
6:09 am
from our sutro tower camera. i just wanted to match the scene this morning. as we get started, we are seeing the low clouds and fog near the coastline. while the valleys will be warming up, moving ahead and temperatures will be making it into the 80s, even some 90s. and for the weekend we have the possibility of more thunderstorms firing up over the sierra. and so that's just a heads up if you're going there for the weekend. a look at brentwood, where we are going to see a big warm-up going into the afternoon, with high temperatures there hitting 90 at 4:00 this afternoon. now, as we get out on the roads this morning, we are seeing that the flow of traffic on 101 in san jose is light here, but we are also seeing things picking up for the san mateo bridge and the commute direction going westbound. so we are going to most likely see things slowing down there. on 880 in fremont. we are seeing things flowing well. yesterday there were some issues on the roads. today, not so much. so as we drive through the tri-valley, westbound 84 takes about 13 minutes from vallecitos road to 680. it is slowing down and we're also
6:10 am
up, as well as the richmond san rafael bridge. there was an accident there, but we do have a new accident in the south bay on 101, and we'll be watching that. as of now, it's not slowing down the commute. an update again in a few minutes. back to you. thanks, kari. assessing the state of our finances coming up. surprising new findings, revealing the state of americans personal finances. it is a good question. are you better off now than you were, say, exactly a year ago? we'll take a look. let's take a look at the futures this morning on a thursday where everything is in the green. also, a new south bay restaurant is serving up some serious buzz. coming up this morning, we're going to hear from one of its executive chefs there about the recipe for t wide ranging success they have over there. i'm sure you're going to want to go visit soon. stick around. we'll tell you where that is and what is all about.t'

our planner for gilroy. this is one of the spots where we'll see temperatures starting out. cool, but then heating up quickly as we go throughout the day. we're going from low 50s at 8:00 to the low to mid 80s for this afternoon. lots of sunshine and overall a nice day, but it will be a little bit warmer heading into the weekend and out on the roads. right now we are seeing that. we are seeing the volume
6:14 am
of traffic picking up and with the metering lights on at the bay bridge, now w we're seeing that backup. but there is also an accident as you're driving across the bay bridge that may be slowing things down a little bit more. a look at the overall weather and traffic together coming up in a few minutes. well good morning. very happy thursday to you. the dating app bumble is cutting staff. the company's ceo says younger people are using dating apps less meta. facebook will be the subject of another movie from the producer who brought you the social network, aaron sorkin. he also did the west win he'll take over as director, according to deadline, the new movie, 15 years after the first, will concentrate around facebook's gathering of personal data and its effect on the elections of 2020. deadline reports the movie will simply be called the social network part two. fed chairman jerome powell went back before congress on wednesday to once again explain why the central bank is keeping interest rates high and its tariffs. president

trump is frustrated with the high rates several news agencies are reporting the president is considering announcing a next pick for fed chair early. now, that pick would not take over early. powell, who trump calls a moron and who was also appointed by trump, has 11 months to go. a new nbc surveymonkey poll asked americans if they were better off financially compared to a year ago. a plurality said, yeah, about the same. a new restaurant opened up recently at valley fair mall in san jose. it's called joey, and it has some locations in southern california, but it's actually canadian. we spoke with the chain's top chef. right from the moment you walk in our doors, you're met with a glass of bubbles, and then we try and really focus on every detail along the way. we make sure the lighting is great, the sound is appropriate, fun atmosphere, great boost that you sit in now. valley fair i is turnin out to e a real hotspot for restaurants. dim sum korean barbecue. they're going to open up in asia live,
6:16 am
which is the asian version of eataly. and now joey opening up a restaurant at a time when it's tough to find workers and customers are worried about spending too much, the restaurant industry is a tough industry. it's a fight for people. we've had some great people come into our doors. thankfully, here in san jose, of course, rising costs of food are always a challenge, but really we like to. the way i look at it is we like to kind of raise the occasion. you see all those staffers. indeed.com shows the restaurant still has more than two dozen job openings, been listed as best place to work 13 times. and its chef says you can get in as a busser and run the company one day. you see how people grow through the organization. i'll go to an opening and you see people working a station. they're working the grill, working salads, and then a couple openings later, i'm in a different city, and those same people are now training the next set of partners on thohose ations. and then a year later, they're at one of our locations in management, running shifts, doingchedules, doing
6:17 am
inventory, leading the line. and it can happen really quickly depending on the individl. independent numbers show their retention rate is off the charts, which is important in restaurants because you're not training all the time. we asked the chef, you know, hey, what's your order? he said, spicy crab dip. and then i did a little research. and you'll never believe the name of the person who created the chain. joey. joey, no. it's jeff. that was a trick one. hey, it was a trick question. that's a nice venue though. i've been there a few times and especially with the bay area weather. indoor outdoors is super nice. it's extraordinary the number of restaurants over there at valley fair, it really is. and the whole concept of being able to see your food prepared and whatnot, opening the china live or asia live in that area too, but it's based on china, live in the city. so pretty cool. they have save your pennies, though, wherever you go these days. yeah, for the shopping over there too, especially here in the bay area. well, trending this morning, we're milking this
6:18 am
next story for all it is worth. it's a cow turning many heads in chile. made entirely of pure chocolate. it weighs more than 1,100 pounds. it was a centerpiece for a festival last weekend. one child even that flowed from the cow'solate udder. and a sweet finale to the weekend event organizers broke up the statue. you see it there, but they auctioned off pieces to some of the festival attendees. you could get a little piece of it. that's crazy. all that hard work. and then you just, like, just break it. yeah, exactly. no kidding. well, at least they got to enjoy it. ■yeah. and the little kid milking it. couldn't have that in other parts of the country this week with the temperatures so high. yeah that's what we've been talking about. thank goodness that was inside. but yeah we are going to have a wide range in temperatures. and all it takes is a short drive. if you're tired of seeing the cool weather in the fog in san francisco, head to the valleys. and if
6:19 am
you're in the valleys and you're tired of the heat, you might want to head to the coast this weekend. we're all starting out in the mid 50s, and we are seeing a nice start to the day in concord. will be a little warm during the afternoon, and you may notice that it's a little warmer today compared to yesterday. we'll continue to see the temperatures warming up as we go into the weekend. we're at 56 degrees here in concord at 7:00, at 11:00 at 72 degrees, and making it into the mid 80s. this afternoon, as we zoom into the south bay, it will be 79, in san jose, 84 in los gatos and 86 in morgan hill. and we'll also see a wide range in temperatures across the east bay, with antioch hitting 89 degrees today, 83 in pleasanton and in oakland today, 75 near the coast. it will be in the low 60s for half moon bay and 74 in san mateo in san francisco. we're also still looking at a wide range in temperatures from upper 50s to upper 60s across the city today. and we'll see some sunshine for the afternoon. and
6:20 am
in the north bay, 64 for bodega bay. but we're not in the 90s today, and ukiah and clear lake, but we're very close, and it will be a warm afternoon. and we've been talking about the record setting temperatures, this big heat dome that's been causing the high temperatures hitting into the 90s. as we take a look out east, we'll see mid 90s still happening across parts of the south. but at least for new york city today it's not over 100 degrees. it will be 78. so that's a big drop in temperatures there and a big change. a look at our 7-day forecast shows that the valleys warm up a little bit more. we've had some seasonable weather, but it will get a little warm in the afternoon for some of the valleys on tomorrow and saturday. and then it comes back to some more seasonable temperatures through the middle of next week. while san francisco is going to still have the mild weather, it's going to be very comfortable there throughout the weekend with low 70s. let's head out on the roads this morning. wanted to show you the commute. heading across the san mateo bridge. this is the
6:21 am
commute direction and even though there is a big volume, it is flowing well. we haven't seen any incidents. and on 880 and fremont, we're also looking good in both directions, going both north and south, but we are still seeing a couple of accidents popping up for the bridges. the richmond san rafael bridge is slowing down with an accident there as you're going across the span. and then for the bay bridge, there is an earlier accident at the yerba buena exit. didn't really cause too many slowdowns there. it's just the pickup in the volume that's slowing down the sensors. and as you're driving from contra costa to alameda county on westbound for the antioch bridge to highway two, 42 takes you about 35 minutes. and also it's slowing down on vasco road. so now maybe the time to get out the door. and i'll keep you updated on what's happening with weather and traffic coming up. thanks so much, kari. well, next here on today in the bay, we're going grocery shopping with a purpose. as in your 4th of july barbecue. of course, we're going to break down just how much more

6:30 am
day we see a nice warming trend. it's going to be comfortably warm for this afternoon, but we're at 74 at lunchtime. if you're thinking about having lunch outside on a patio, it's going to be in the low 80s for the afternoon. concord today, 86 degrees 87. in santa rosa and san jose, we're looking at a high of 79 degrees. but staying in the 60s in san francisco and heading out on the roads this morning, a look at that commute where we are starting to see the big backup there at the bay bridge toll plaza. the golden gate bridge, though, is looking all clear. no issues with visibility. the fog has rolled out and the san mateo bridge is slowing down. we are seeing a lot more people heading out there and for the tri-valley, the drive times as of now takes you on westbound 580 from grant line road to 680 27 minutes. looking good elsewhere. traveling through the tri-valley, we have seen a couple of accidents on both the richmond san rafael bridge as well as the bay bridge and the richmond bridge. seems like it's
6:31 am
getting more of a backup. we also had an accident in the south bay on 101. as you're moving past trimble, this is going in the norbound direction. so that's slowing down. people heading through san jose and heading closer to santa clara, up toward mountain view. so i'll keep an eye on this, and we'll have a look at weather and traffic together again in a few minutes. sounds good. thank you. kari. well, san francisco's pride week is kicking into high gear, and with it, preparations to ensure safety for those who come out and celebrate. so important today in the bay's ginger conejero saab joins us live in san francisco this morning. and ginger, for many this year, more than just a celebration. that's right, laura and mark as well. this will be san francisco's 55th pride celebration.rganizers are emphasizing if you are coming out to sf pride this weekend, you are supporting equality, inclusion and justice for all this year. it's a revolutionary act. if you show up at pride and we need to send a message, we

francisco. and you know, we heard ginger talking about how the city is getting ready for pride. well, the festivities for the celebration continue this evening. sf pride is holding a block party at 5:00 this evening. happening along any street. this is just off of market. now, this is a free event. it's going to include happy hour music and a dance floor so you can get your boogie on. what's an old. now don't get your boogie on. yeah i know jeez. they're like don't come on my dance floor, old man. cut a road. so if you want to head out there, you have until 1130. that's how long it's going to last. meteorologist kari hall is tracking what you can expect weather wise with that block party. yeah. going out to shake a tail feather. marcus is really old. just mentally. all right. let's get a look at what's going on with our forecast for the block party. we'll see temperatures in the low 60s. it's going to be a really nice day and a little cool there. but of course, as you're dancing, you'll keep it warm. let's get a
6:38 am
look at the whole weekend for sf pride. it's going to be so nice. temperatures comfortable with sunshine in the upper 60s and overnight lows dipping down to low 50s. so just as fast as it cools down it will warm up and we'll get some sunshine at times throughout the weekend. we also have the alameda county fair going on in pleasanton today. it will be 83 degrees and it will be a little bit hotter tomorrow during the middle of the day, but we'll still have those cool evenings out there. if you're going to the fair in pleasanton. now in redwood city, we have music in the square. it starts at 6:00 and it's at a perfect 75 degrees and sunny and into the evening. it also stays comfortable as it comes down to about 69 degrees at 8:00. and then looking at what's happening in napa this weekend, a little warm during the day. but overall a great weekend and we're going to see a lot of sunshine here as well. even though we start out with clouds and temperatures in the low 50s. heads up. if you're going to the sierra this weekend
6:39 am
that even though it looks nice, we will have a chance of some isolated thunderstorms. but our temperatures will make it into the upper 70s and low 80s from tomorrow into sunday. and looking at the morning commute, we are seeing the big backup there at the bay bridge toll plaza and also a slow go getting across the bay bridge due to an earlier accident. but the golden gate bridge is looking beautiful. all clear. not a big flow of volume coming in from the north bay. and then looking at the san mateo bridge and the commute direction, we are seeing it slowing down as we typically do. no accidents there across the bay bridge as of now, and through the tri-valley takes about 27 minutes to get from grant line road to 680 on 580, and also for the westbound 84 direction from vallecitos road to 680 about 11 minutes. but overall, we're seeing still those few accidents out there on the richmond bridge, as well as the bay bridge that's slowing it down, getting across the bridge. but you might want to just allow some extra time to get to work
6:40 am

to the top of the hour as we take a live look outside in san jose looking at the sunrise, and it is a fairly clear morning. will continue with sunshine today, and temperatures come up a few degrees compared to yesterday. but look at this. it's still very comfortable and
6:44 am
still a little bit cooler than our normal high temperature for the south bay. we'll take a look at our weekend warm-up in the microclimate forecast in a few minutes. well, the pentagon has revealed new video of the american airstrike on that iranian mountain fortress. scott mcgrew the access. our military had the pictures. really extraordinary. just amazing. it's we're going to show them to you now. this comes from a pentagon briefing that just wrapped up. i will note to our director the tape is long and it's silent. but this is what reporters just saw.
6:45 am
keep it going for a minute. you'll see inside the inside the mission space. a brand new poll by nbc and surveymonkey found a total of 38% of americans support the attack. 45% opposed it in some way. about a fifth of people were pretty neutral about it. where it gets interesting in this poll is this question what if we have to hit them again? here a majority of americans say yes. 26% support ground troops if necessary. i, i will note the numbers on your screen don't add up to 100%. that's normal because of rounding. a majority of americans would support another strike if necessary, but president trump has said it's not. he has said iran's nuclear program was obliterated. here's defense secretary hegseth, who just briefed the media about an hour ago. you want to call it
6:46 am
destroyed? you want to call it defeated? you want to call it obliterated. choose your word. this was an historically successful attack, and we should celebrate it as americans. and it gives us a chance to have peace, a chance to have a deal and an opportunity to prevent a nuclear iran, which is something president trump talked about for 20 years. and no other presidents had the courage to actually do. more new detail. the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff this morning said the pentagon's been practicing that bomb run on the iranian mountain or something similar to it for 15 years, and the large penetrator bombs used were designed nearly a decade ago. with that specific target in mind. other news you may recognize this fellow. he's one of president trump's criminal defense attorneys. emil bove defended trump in the hush money case. trump has nominated him to be an appellate judge. now, that's one level below supreme court justice. a lot of senators who would have to vote to confirm him are suspicious of him. he was the man behind the

firing of the fbi agents who investigated the january 6th attack on the capitol. a whistleblower says he was in the past instructed people to ignore court orders, and now they say he wants a job where he hands out those orders. i want to be clear about one thing up front. there is a wildly inaccurate caricature of me in the mainstream media. i am not anybody's henchman. i'm not an enforcer. i'm a lawyer from a small town who never expected to be in an arena like this. we will continue to cover what's happening at the pentagon and the briefing. we expect congress to be briefed in just a few hours. marcus. all right. thanks, scott. well, new this morning. new data on building a nest egg. this is when it comes to the youngest members of the workforce. a recent gallup poll finds fewer than one fourth of gen z adults follow those kind of influencers on social media.
6:48 am
30% of gen z and millennials are already working with a financial service company for investment advice. one financial expert says, because credit is critical to long term financial health, it is important to really vet those social media sources when it comes to offering services beyond the credit score. only some are guided by federal oversight and regulations, and while you may find your advice. there are some new sources out there. one expert says much of it all will likely be the same. it's still critical that you budget. everybody hates that word, but they feel like it's restrictive. but really, it's a roadmap for how you want to get to your financial goals. it puts you in control of your money. you need to check your credit report, your credit scores, know what they are. and younger adults especially should realize that everyone makes mistakes. but a bad financial decision can stay on your credit report for seven years. all you around. trending this morning. fans of r&b music like this guy can

all right, let's get out there and look at our weather and traffic. we're starting out with a beautiful view at the golden gate bridge. it is so nice. and we've seen it clearing out a little bit more compared to days past. you know what that means. it's going to be a warmer day, at least for the valleys. and the warming trend will continue into saturday. our valleys in the upper 80s and even some mid 90s. and we're also going to be clear here, but the sierra may see some thunderstorms firing up this weekend. let's get a look at santa rosa. another cool start. we're at 48 degrees and then we'll be at 57 at 8:00. you see how fast these temperatures start to heat up? we'll be at 75 at lunchtime and just 80 degrees. one hour after that, we're going to see a high of 87. so that heat up once again will haen quickly as we go from 40 to 80. a big range in temperatures throughout the day and as well across our microclimates. so we're seeing highs in the low 60s for half moon bay. while in palo alto we'll see a high of 78 and it
6:52 am
will be 89 in fairfield. let's check out tomorrow's forecast. but it will be slightly hotter in many of the inland valleys, up to 91 in morgan hill, as well as livermore, fairfield, 96 degrees. and then saturday is the peak of the heat for some of the spots, like concord, reaching a high of 92 degrees and 100. in ukiah, while comfortable in san francisco with low 70s, the heat will see still not really big in comparison to the high heat we've had out east, as well as the humidity factor in. i talk about a heat dome on my social media pages and then looking at san jose. the 4th of july is within view. look all the way down the line to next friday and it looks spectacular with highs in the mid 70s. it will be a little bit warmer this weekend compared to what we have ahead. so we're seeing our valleys headed for the low 90s for this weekend, but still comfortable in san francisco and then looking out on the roads this morning. this is a look at dublin on 580 traveling into the bay area. we're going to continue to see some hopefully
