good evening. thanks for joining us. >> a lifeguard is out of the hospital following a dramatic rescue on the sonoma coast. it happened near jenner. >> alyssa harrington has the story you'll only see on abc 7 news. >> reporter: warning people clik cheryl larson and her grandkids not to get too close to the crashing waves.

>> he just said, don't go down by the wet sand. >> reporter: friday he helped rescue a family dragged out to sea. the terrifying ordeal captured on cell phone video. this picture shows the group holding hands moments before a wave knocked them down. pendergrass jumped in after them. >> you have to start moving fast, you know. just going after the littlest one, and the littlest one is going to have the hardest time. >> reporter: the littlest one a 7-year-old. >> when i got to her, her eyes were cinched shut and she was scared and in the fetal position. i got a hand on her. i said, we're going to make it through this. >> reporter: he said the girl was very brave and held her breath as waves continued to pound them. a rescue helicopter arrived and plucked her out. then the lifeguard went back for her mother. >> what's going through your mind is i'm going to lose somebody today. and, you know what, knock on driftwood out here, we didn't.

>> reporter: he said his best advice at a beach like this where the water is rough, is to stay on dry sand. that's where you know you'll be safe. he was hospitalized for hypothermia. the family is calling him a hero. he said he was just doing his job. at goat rock beach, alyssa harrington, abc 7 news. detectives are looking into what caused the death of a 2-year-old girl early this morning in south san jose. a 911 call came in just after 1:00 this morning on glenbury and blairbury way. the girl was not breathing and rushed to the hospital where she died. homicide detectives are investigating that's protocol anytime a child dies unexpectly. new details on a deadly accident on interstate 880 around midnight. an oakland woman faces charges in the case and was driving under the influence of alcohol. kerry cash is accused of hitting a man who was on the side of the freeway looking at damage to his car after an earlier accident.

the 28-year-old man was killed. officers say cash kept driving and the chp caught up with her. she also faces charges of driving with a suspended license. a rookie police officer in virginia was shot and killed on her first day on the job. two other officers were wounded. abc news reporter gloria riviera has the latest on the investigation tonight. >> reporter: tonight a police department and the tight-knit community it serves devastated by a shocking loss. prince william county officer ashley williams killed one day after being sworn in. >> it definitely hit us. we weren't expecting it at all. >> reporter: authorities say the new officer out on her first street patrol saturday responding to a 911 call reporting domestic abuse. >> i just want to be clear, do we have officers involved in a shooting? >> we have three officers that have been shot. >> reporter: it was here in this quiet upscale neighborhood that rookie cop ashley and two others

approached that front door. police say almost immediately the suspect confronted them opening fire and they all went down. >> i saw the officer laying right there. holding his leg actually. >> reporter: neighbor zach harris saying he heard three gunshots. police identifying the suspect as army staff sergeant hamilton assigned to the pentagon. hamilton's wife was found dead inside the home. his 11-year-old son also home but not hurt. the two other officers are expected to recover. now officer ashley's squad car draped in black to honor the rookie lost too soon. hamilton is expected to appear in court tomorrow. he's eligible for the death penalty if convicted. >> that was gloria riviera reporting. a car wash was held to raise money for the funeral of

aguilera. they accepted donations for car washes today. her body was discovered earlier this month in the morrison canyon area of the fremont hills. her boyfriend and a second man face charges in her death. warm weather will bring a nice start to the work week. let's take a live look outside right now. pier 15, cool outside and partly cloudy. but by the end of the week, we could see some rain. abc 7 news meteorologist drew tuma has more. >> out there right now, we have dry skies. we have clouds overhead. partly cloudy skies across the region. and as we go into future weather, we're not only going to have clouds first thing tomorrow morning, but also some areas of fog. monday morning 5:00 in the morning, the deep shades of gray you see on your screen, that's an area of potentially dense fog first thing tomorrow morning. by 9:00, a lot of this is dissipating, and by the midday and afternoon hours, we'll see

plenty of sunshine and very mild temperatures. after this warm pattern tomorrow, we are tracking not one, but two chances for storms. we'll have the full forecast coming up. you can see why residents of this home won't be able to live here for a while. a huge tree fell on lee valley in mill valley this afternoon. firefighters tell us no one was home when it happened. >> as far as we know at this point, just older tree. possibly dead, rotted. no significant wind. we live in a forest, and there is no way to avoid it other than early detection of a dead or hazardous tree. >> pg&e turned off the natural gas and electricity as a precaution. tuesday we could see more candidates drop out of the race for the white house. coming up at 9:00, the controversial comments made by donald trump today tt has opponents on both parties on the attack. the falcon 9 lodge was a go, but scrubbed at the last second.

that's as far as they got. seconds before liftoff today, space x aborted their rocket for a third time in a row. there was a low thrust alarm tonight that started because of a few minutes earlier, because a boat entered the rocket's landing space. space x is trying to land a rorkt on a barge in the ocean which has never been done before. they believe reusable rockets could transform space travel as we know it. donald trump is getting a lot of backlash tonight after he refused to reject an endorsement

from a former grand wizard of the ku klux klan. >> i know nothing about david duke. i know nothing about white supremacists. and so you're asking me a question that i'm supposed to be talking about people that i know nothing about. >> trump was apparently caught offguard during the cnn interview this morning. on friday he disavowed duke. opponents from both parties pounced. hillary clinton had this to say before rallying several hundred supporters at a historically black college in tennessee. >> that's pathetic. >> we cannot be a party that nominates someone who refuses to condemn white supremacists and the ku klux klan. >> marco rubio called trump unelectable at his own rally in virginia. 12 states vote on super tuesday. if trump defeats rubio and cruz in most of those states, he could become a lock for the republican nomination. coming up next at 9:00, could we see rain on the way? >> meteorologist drew tuma is up next with our forecast.

abc 7 news was in san ramone to fight the use of prescription drugs. the san ramone valley organized the dose of awareness walk and expo. >> the kickoff to today's walk, the entire event honored the memory of thousands of americans killed by prescription drug abuse. >> good cause. we have drew here. definitely our weather's changing a little bit. >> yeah, tomorrow morning first thing, fog develops. but after that, a nice day for monday afternoon.

showing you partly to mostly cloudy out there. we are dry. underneath those clouds, we're still rather mild right now. temperatures across the board, you notice we're all sitting nice in the 50s currently. tonight with those clouds overhead, numbers are going to stay pretty close to where we are right now, in the mid-40s across many spots. we'll see fog developing for your monday morning. already seeing it developing right now in the live look from the golden gate bridge camera. first thing on monday areas of fog. some of those pockets of fog could be rather dense. by the afternoon, the fog is out of here. nothing but total sunshine. you do notice by 4:00 in the afternoon, we're nice and mild once again with most spots getting into the 70s. highs for your monday, 74 in concord. mild 73 oakland. comfortable 70 in downtown san francisco. san jose up to 76 degrees. santa rosa, a mild high of 74. as we take a look at the week ahead for oakland specifically, monday, tuesday and wednesday we're sitting in the 70s. rather mild. you notice the second half of

the accuweather forecast, noticeable cooldown back into the 60s. that cooldown comes with two chances of rain. ranking our storms all season long from 1 to 5. 1 is light. to give you an idea what to expect with each storm. first on thursday morning, this is a 1. a really light storm. you notice the north bay going to be the, quote unquote, jackpot, most areas you can see are going to pick up less than .10 of an inch of moisture. as we head into thursday morning, you do note, here comes the cold front. it's a really light shower out there. but as it tries to push onshore, it's going to encounter a lot of dry air. the dry air is really going to quickly eat away at this storm system. it looks like the heaviest rain amounts will be in the north bay, and the lightest rain amounts will be in the south bay right around san jose, where i think a few spots could pick up less than .10 of an inch of moisture.

then we're going to track a stronger system. we'll jump ahead into next saturday night, sunday morning, you notice the pockets of yellow, indicating the heavier showers. and the strong winds associated with this storm system. so right now, the early call on this next weekend storm, looks to be a 2. moderate storm, really the effects will be felt sunday morning. total rainfall could be rather widespread. from 1/2 an inch to 1 1/2 inches of rain. we'll fine-tune the details. but something we're watching in the next seven days. tomorrow we have the morning fog. nice afternoon. lots of sunshine. mild. that mild pattern sticks with us by tuesday and wednesday. thursday, that cooldown comes with a light shower. from 1 on the impact scale. friday, mainly sunny day. saturday increasing clouds. sunday we're tracking the breezy and rainy storm with a 2 on the impact scale. could be a soaker of a storm the next seven days. thank you so much, drew.
