get rid of. >> we are all in this together so let's write some positive messages. >> novato police don't have a motive or suspects. they say the area has been a go to spot for juveniles in the past, but it is unclear if that's the truth. >> we don't know what the motivation of the suspect was. at this point it is not a hate crime, but something we are ago testifily looking into. >> novato police are looking for the public's help. abc7 news. >> dan: an abc7 news viewer sent this photo showing racist signs in a men's restroom in danville's monte vista high school. they said the district will provide new staff training on how to respond appropriately to incidents of bullying and discrimination. and another reported hate crime in the east bay where a woman says she was targeted for wearing a scarf on her head. abc7 news was at mission peak

and fremont where a woman was wearing a scarf on her head because of a medical condition and she returned to find her car window smashed with a note m it. it said, "it this is our country now. get out." the victim posted it and she is fighting the hate with love. >> i pray for you to get out of pain and may you never do this to anyone. i love you anyway. >> dan: police in san jose are investigating after swastikas were etched in a glass window at a tie hua -- taiwanese center. and they admitted 2020 strong only robberies in the east basins friday. the robberies happened at the rest oakland bart stations and near lake merritt. the victims were between 29 and 60 years old. one woman was punched in the face and some fell to the pavement while struggling to hold on to their property. new at 11:00, business

owners in san jose say a serial burglar 1* robbing them. three businesses were hit. katie is live at the san jose police department. katie? >> reporter: ama, san jose police are investigating and in the meantime one of the business owners posted the surveillance images on facebook and says the community is now rallying to help bring them justice. around 4:00 a.m. on saturday a surveillance camera captures a break in at rita's of san jose. a rock smashes through the glass door and then a man slips in and grabs the tip jar and leaves. minutes later he returns and fumbles with the cash register and leaves empty handed. >> very frightening. who could do such a thing. in a community we think is so safe. >> a bistro was hit. the burglar smashed a window and took an ipod. >> we have been here for a year.

everything looked so calm. you never think it will happen to you. >> they compared surveillance video and believe it is the same man. community members then they know -- think they knowy who it is. >> we got the word out and they started throwing out names of who they thought it was, the suspect. we are extremely grateful. >> the owners of rita's are anxious for an arrest. until then they are keeping a positive attitude. >> to replace a door is one thing. we were so thankful no one was hurt. >> the suspect is still at large. in san jose, abc7 news. >> dan: a happy ending for san jose state student. she now has her specialized van back. we shared her story on abc7 news at 11:00. someone stole a vehicle near her home in scots valley on friday. the woman spotted the van today by the boardwalk and called police. police posted this picture.

she said she was amazed by the outpouring of support following our story. we are glad it turned out all right. >> ama: in a few hours dozens of bay area shelter dogs are on a one way trip to minnesota in hopes they will find their forever homes. >> dan: katie is live and has more on why the animals have to go such a long way, katie. >> reporter: i checked the forecast in minneapolis and these pups better be ready for some snow which could be a change for these california dogs, but it could take weeks for them to be adopted, where there it is in a matter of days. shelter dog mcqueen just missed his trip to minnesota. >> you lock eyes and you bond. >> reporter: they came to the contra costa animal shelter in martinez to find a dog, but they discovered the small breeds were headed to the midwest for adoption. >> called minnesota and then called the shelter and then worked it out and said come and get him right now.

and so we did. >> reporter: the rest of mcqueen's pound pals are busting out tomorrow morning. six dogs from martinez and 21 from the pinole shelter. the crates are ready and so are the volunteers. >> we will be walking in the morning and helping load them and driving them to the airport. >> reporter: the shell tears are constantly at capacity. that's not the case in minnesota. >> they said they just don't have dogs to adopt leak they do in california. >> reporter: veterinarians at uc davis got them healthy enough for travel. >> they are taking animals that normally might not get out of the shelter as quickly because they have other health issues. >> reporter: there is no shortage of excitement at the prospect of a new home even if it is 2,000 miles across the country. abc7 news. >> dan: they don't care how far it is. get out that warm blanket.

we have heard frightening reports of gadgets exploding and the cause is often a small battery. nearly all of us use them in the gadgets. anne app most are safe, but there is a small risk. no one can predict which may blow up. >> a hover board suddenly busts into flames. an e-cigarette explodes in somebody's pocket. a smartphone explodes in a truck. >> they can over heat and they can burst into flames. >> why are some ordinary products suddenly turning into virtual bombs? >> what we are talking about is a mini fuel tank. >> reporter: the lithium ion battery is powering more and more of our badgeetts. everything from electric cars to lap p toes to smoke detectors. >> and even in those little greeting cards. >> reporter: yes, even singing birthday card have a little power pack inside.

the tiny batteries have been blamed for big disasters. and in others you may not hear about. >> never heard of this happening before. >> reporter: karen wallace of pleasanton says she was opening an app on her new iphone 6. >> all of a sudden it sparked. >> reporter: the battery exploded and burning a hole in her hand. >> i was lucky it was near my hand. i think it is scary. >> reporter: they knew some o the samsung batteries had exploded, but the iphone? >> i said i want to know exactly what happened. >> reporter: they brought the damaged phone to an apple store and the employees took it away and gave her a new one. apple tells me it takes customer safety seriously. and her damaged phone was accidentally recycled instead of inspected. >> there are tons of kids out there that are using these iphones with the ion battery. that's something that really needs to be addressed. >> i believe i was going to get a pen from the bookshelf.

>> reporter: he never dreamed his e-cigarette would be dangerous, but it blew up shooting metal that his face and taking out his left eye. >> it gets hot. it is flammable. it explodes. >> reporter: he has nearly 80 clients suing for e-cigarette explosions. >> you are basically playing russian roulette. >> reporter: it exploded while charging up. i consulted the uc scientist. >> all lithium batteries have a chance of catching fire. >> reporter: he says packing a lot of energy into a tiny battery may be asking for trouble. >> the problem is that one-third of the battery is a gasoline-like substance. >> reporter: gasoline? the federal aviation administration documented 25 battery melt downs or blow ups in planes and airports since january. the consumer product safety commission has more cases. laptops, battery packs, flashlights. can we predict when a battery is going to blow up? >> it is completely

down 32 to 36 degrees. when you get going you may see the icy lawns or you may have to scrape the frost off your windshield. be prepared for that. live doppler 7 is showing you clear skies. and is a you notice from the sutro tower camera, san francisco is in the clear. near freezing in the morning and it is cool again tomorrow afternoon. and we are looking at a moderate storm this upcoming woke end. tomorrow morning expecting the temperatures near freezing. 35 fairfield and 35 livermore. we will still be chilly around the bay and the coast. this is where you are not used to seeing temperatures like this. we are look at low to upper 40s. make sure you pack on the heavy layer tomorrow morning and don't forget about the kids with the heavy jackets to keep them warm as well. temperatures upper 50s to the mid60s tomorrow afternoon. a cool day, but it is going to be a sun intoe one. for your weekend we have a two-part system. the first part is moderate in strength and it is a two on our impact scale. we are looking at wind gusts near 40 miles an hour and

there is a slight chance of thunder. fray day night the rain is well to the north of us. as we head into 10:00 p.m. it slips into the north bay and then it starts to get wet overnight into the wee hours of saturday morning. widespread rain at 10:00 a.m. i know cal is playing this weekend. it is rainy if you are heading out for the afternoon. rain switches to showers on saturday and then another band of rain comes in on sunday. this part of the system is a one. sunday morning steady rain and sunday afternoon and evening scatter ited showers -- scattered showers when the wind gets here. saturday morning we are expecting wind gusts 36 to 38 miles an hour. make sure if you have any loose patio furniture to secure it for the afternoon, it is still a bit on the breezy side for saturday. rainfall totals are highest in the north bay and looking at over an inch. some of the higher terrain could see an inch and a half in the south bay half an inch of rain. you can download the news app to track the cold and track the rain. here is the accu-weather
