live where you live, this is "abc 7 news." ♪ >> triple digit heat is in the forecast for the weekend and beyond. from the east bay to the coast, millions of bay area residents will be looking for some kind of way to keep cool. it might not be easy. good evening. thanks for joining us. i'm dan ashley. ama daetz is off. along with the heat the weather service has posted an advisory and a warning.

looking outside right now it is still in the mid 80s in walnut creek and we want to touch base with sandhya patel. here it comes. >> indeed, dan. the first heat wave of the season so far. it is going to be a scorcher. you're going to feel it. as you look at live doppler 7 right now, we're seeing passing clouds. there's a heat advisory covering all inland areas from 11:00 a.m. saturday to 11:00 p.m. monday. i want to let you know the national weather service dropped the heat as visory for san francisco bay shoreline, but for the rest of the region in orange heat-related illness is possible. stay hydrated and there's an excessive heat warning for solano county sunday noon until 8:00 p.m. tuesday. dangerous hot weather means you will want to protect not only kids, the elderly and your pets. remember, it gets extremely hot inside a vehicle. even though we say it all the time, people sometimes still forget about their pets and kids inside their cars. i will be back with a look at the temperatures for your

father's day weekend and to let you know exactly when this heat wave is going to break, dan. >> sandhya, thanks very much. look at this beautiful sunset behind us. live picture there. it is stunning tonight. well, the heat drove many people south to the beach today, and as sandhya said it is expected to get hotter throughout the weekend, but authorities are warning beach goers about dangers to be aware of. abc reporter jeanine del vega spent the weekend in santa cruz. >> whether splashing in the water or playing this is sand, seemed everyone had the same idea today. the crowds on the main beach started building by late morning. many came to escape the bay area heat. >> it is 105 in brentwood, so we thought it would be perfect to come out here. we brought all of our kids and two friends. >> reporter: the team of marine safety officers and life guards are scanning the beach. they know those coming from out of town may not be used to rip currents, wind and surf. >> they get far out there, they turn around and look back at shore and realize how far out they are, they get tired.

they get cramps, a little panicked. our life guards are looking for people that maybe don't look like good swimmers. >> reporter: the life guard stressed not to turn your back on the ocean and those with children should be arm's length away. they encourage parents to check in at the life guard station to find out about hazards on the beach. >> i like big waves. >> reporter: to make it to the waves you have to brave the traffic on highway 17. the chp reports a huge increase in crashes along the corridor in the last year, most due to speed. >> give yourself extra time to get to where you're going. expect delays. there's going to be traffic. put your cellphone down. leave texting and being on your phone, it is illegal and unsafe. >> reporter: it all will be worth it once you arrive to enjoy the sights and sounds of summer. in santa cruz, jeanine del vega, "abc 7 news." when the weather gets warm, many people like to soak in the sun. "abc 7 news" was at lake merritt in oakland where we found people taking a jog or a leisurely

stroll in the afternoon sun. some others decided it would be better to seek shelter perhaps in the shade. just yesterday so many people were right there for the warriors' victory parade. let's continue our team coverage with "abc 7 news" reporter lonnie rivera at the alameda county fair in pleasanton where it is set to be a scorcher for fair goers tomorrow. >> when it is hot outside and ice cold slushy or cold drink hit the spot, as the alameda county fair begins so does a heat wave. >> drink plenty of water. where loose-fitting clothes. wear a wide brimmed hat. >> reporter: ashley howell and her son made a dash for these misters after braden's favorite summer treat. >> the second we walked into the fair all he talked about was his ice cream soechlt we did a few krieds and he got his ice cream. >> reporter: the alameda county fair grounds sits on 267 acres. while there are thousands of trees, the hot concrete beneath the venue makes it feel hotter. >> we have ambulances ready to go in case we have a heat

emergency, we're able to get the patient and bring them back here. >> reporter: fire and ems added one more mini ambulance to their fleet. it looks like a supersized golf cart with a gurney and first aid supplies. it is a mobile tool on the fair grounds in the event of a heat-related emergency. >> winter was very cold and we're very concerned about the heat. we're experiencing temperatures well over the 100s. >> reporter: plenty of animals are here, too. they're in the shade and handlers will water them down multiple times during the day. hydration is key for people and pets. >> i love it. >> yeah? >> it's been so cold for so long, i've been waiting for this. >> reporter: the fair is expected to draw more than 5,000 people during a 20-day run, and the first few days are going to be sizzling with father's day being one of the hottest. in pleasanton, lonnie rivera, "abc 7 news." have fun. just take it easy and you can stay on top of this heat wave with the "abc 7 news" app. if there's breaking weather news

where you live we'll send out a push alert. seven navy sailors are missing and at least three were immediaty vacced after a container ship hit a u.s. destroyer. one of the people transported was the ship's command. this happened at 2:30 in the morning off the southwest coast of japan. abc reporter chuck seefrts has more. >> reporter: this helicopter lifting an injured sailor from the uss fitzgerald and the japanese coast guard said several more are missing. >> this ship is in danger, it is taking on water. >> reporter: a big gash tearing down the mid section. u.s. defense department officials say water flooded three compartments. >> pumps are on. >> reporter: the visible and invisible damage inflicted in the middle of the night when the flag freighter hit the destroir in open waters off the west coast of japan. the freighter the bigger ship,

it is over two football fields long. officials scrambling to find out what happened and who is to blame. >> both ships should be looking at radar and try to turn away from each other. how the two large ships ended up hitting each other is hard to understand. >> reporter: japanese coast guard cutters are accompanying the die stroier, the ship is under her own power benavy says propulsion is limited. >> flames ripped through a warehouse in san francisco. fear of toxic smoke forces firefighters to order neighbors to stay indoor, to shelter in place. it broke out on donner avenue in the bay view district. "abc 7 news" reporter wayne freedman has the story. >> reporter: the build ingold, fire hungry and flames hot. you're watching the early moments of a blaze that began in a 5,000 square foot warehouse this afternoon. >> like an explosion like a cherry bomb. >> reporter: it hit four alarms almost immediately and remained that way three hours.

witnesses say the smoke had an acidic smell. the fire department ordered a shelter in place down wind according to the chief joanne white. >> the concern is there might be toxic air. >> reporter: neighbors described the warehouse as a foundry where miniature cable car bells were manufactured. no one was inside which was fortunate because firefighters didn't have to go inside. >> i saw a car and a lot of equipment, it is loaded. >> you have to walk sways. it is floor to ceiling stacked with stuff. >> reporter: what kind of stuff? >> everything. furniture, metal, chandeliers, whatever you could name, car parts. >> there's all hidden pockets of stuff all over. >> reporter: did it look like a fire hazard? >> oh, it always did. >> reporter: how so? >> crammed to the ceiling full of stuff. >> what i can say is we have a all right of articles in there and objects that have contributed to us having a hard time putting the fire out. >> reporter: the fire department says it has no record of violations but it will be

looking hard at what happened here. they expect to remain on scene well into tomorrow. from san francisco, wayne freedman, "abc 7 news." a para greider is recovered as medical center in walnut creek after crashing in vallejo. you can see him rushed into a helicopter here. the crash happened about 4:00 this afternoon. firefighters say there were turbulent weather conditions at the time. the man has injuries to his spine and his knees. well, fire department rescuers pulled a man to safety at san francisco's -- it was over the scene near battery cross by. this man was stranded on the rock face. he tried to walk to the beach but kept slipping, couldn't make it. the fire department got the call about 2:30. it took them about 45 minutes to prepare the lines for a high angle rescue they call it. they brought him back up the cliff. no injuries were reported. everyone is doing okay. three people are in custody

tonight accused of attacking a lyft driver on a san francisco freeway earlier this year. 33-year-old dwayne johnson, 19 year old jerrold williams jr. face charges ranging from assault with a deadly weapon to battery. this dramatic cellphone video captured the attack last month on southbound 101. "abc 7 news" spoke with the driver, 35-year-old alex cantanna shortly after it happened. >> he looked at me in the eyes and all i could do is lay there and cry and think about my kid. >> on social media the chp thanked the public for giving them timms thps that led to the arrests. amazon just added a grocery chain to its shopping cart. why would the king of online shopping want to get into a brick and mortar business? also the apology uber sent out to drivers and riders. meteorologist sandhya patel will be back with the full forecast.

tonight this mega purchase is causing panic in the grocery industry. those stocks tanked today following this announcement. here is "abc 7 news" reporter eric thomas. >> reporter: if you are a big grocery chain and your name is not whole foods, a marketing expert says you may feel like this today. >> i'm scared. i'm very concerned that now a big behemoth is coming on to my tough. >> that is amazon, the company that wrote the book on online retailing may be about to rewrite the book on selling groceries. this shoppinger likes it. >> with the two merging together, my first analogy is it creates a super team. >> reporter: that's because whole foods is known for specialty items. they get amazon's successful corporate culture but what does amazon get? >> an established brick and mortar retail network, a supply chain established and the talent to manage that kind of business. >> if amazon found a path into

the brick and mortar grocery market, that means brick and mortar stores will have to beef up online presence to compete. that's because their existing networks will expand whole food as online and ordering system. neighborhood grocers hope customers prefer the personal touch like those at peed mont market. >> everybody that works here knows you. >> whole foods has 460 stores in the u.s., canada and the uk. amazon will keep the whole foods brand and the current management for now. in berkley, eric thomas, "abc 7 news." tonight california's unemployment rate is at a near 17-year low. new numbers released today from the employment development department show the state's unemployment rate in may dipped to 4.7%. it was 4.8% in april. this is the lowest unemployment rate since the year 2000. here in the bay area, every county but san francisco saw its unemployment rate go down. it actually stayed flat in san

francisco. san ma thai owe county has the lowest unemployment rate at 2.4%. solano county has highest at 4.3%. uber is getting the cover treatment from "time" magazine and it is not kind. take a look at this. you can see the headline, uber fell alongside a picture of uber car driving into a massive, fiery wreck. at the center of that wreck uber headquarters in san francisco. it's been a difficult week for the company. this week ceo travis calinick took a leave of absence, the company's number two quit and a board member made a sexist remark leading him to resign. uber sent out a memo to several u.s. markets lettings them now they're trying to improve. uber says, in expanding so quickly we failed to prioritize the people that helped get us here. ultimately, the measure of our success is satisfaction of our riders, drivers and employees, and we realize we have fallen short. well, those winter storms

that blanket the sierra in snow could be triggering earthquakes in northern california. uc berkley researcher chris johnson found snow and rank press down on the sierra nevada. the mountain range springs back up as the snow melt. that movement increases seismic activity about 10% during the spring. other areas are affected at different times. >> the central coastal ranges we see the stresses more favorable for slip are in the late summer and early fall. >> that's caused by drying streams in the summer. the research does not suggest there is an earthquake season in california, by the way. all right. it is the heat season, and it is going to be pretty hot this weekend. degrees. we are looking toward the 'em bark darrow center there. visibility is good. heat wave expected for father's day weekend, records are possible sunday and the triple digit heat will continue well into next week. so do be prepared for hot weather. here is your father day planner hour-by-hour. 7:00 a.m. when the sun comes up pretty warm, 50s, 60s. taking dad out for lunch, make sure he has a cool beverage, he will need it. notice low 90s inland, mid 60s coast side. by 4:00 p.m. it is intense ht inland, triple digites expected on sunday. coastal highs you will be comfortable in the 60s. sun goes down and retain some of the warmth. tomorrow morning will not be a cool start. marter of fact, it will be mild across most of the bay area, mid 50s to upper 6 0s. clear skies expected first thing saturday morning. if you have saturday afternoons, just limit your outdoor exposure if you can because obviously you don't want to over work yourself

well, oakland is pretty much back to normal after the warriors' huge victory celebration. look at this view of lake merritt from drone view 7. you can see the stage still being dismantled. streets were packed for this parade and victory rally. the aftermath kept cleanup crews very busy until this morning, everything from streamers to confetti had to be cleaned up. more than half a million passengers rode bart on the day of the victory parade, the fifth busiest day in the history.

number five. bart was transportation of choice for dub nation with supporters heading to lake merritt for the celebration. there were 518,744 riders to be precise, but it was down about 5% from the last warriors' victory parade in 2015. warriors co-owners joe lake and peter goober announced they would pick up the tab for the parade as a gift to the city. what kind of tab? today we found out a $4 million bill. a seem city usually helps to cover the cost of the championship parade but oakland is facing a budget short call and they volunteered to foot the bill. well, after five days of deliberations the judge in the cosby sexual assault case has new orders for the jury. what bill cosby said outside the courthouse tonight. also, there's new video from the shootings that happened at a ball field near washington plus the list law enforcement found in the shooter's pocket, and the dangerous shortage of

live where you live, this is "abc 7 news." good evening once again. we'll start with developing news out of pennsylvania. the judge in the bill cosby sexual assault trial is ordering the jury to continue deliberating through the weekend. th declared themselves deadlocked on thursday and reiterated the claim this morning, but the judge told them to keep trying the reach a unanimous verdict. they were dismissed tonight and the 78-year-old comedian spoke outside the courthouse a few hours ago. >> i want to thank the jury for their long days and their honest

work, individually. >> mr. cosby is charged with sexually assaulting a woman at his philadelphia home in 2004. he faced similar accusations from dozens of other women. now back to the shiengt at a ball feet outside our nation's capitol. sources tell "abc 7 news" the gunman had a list of government officials in his pocket. here is abc news reporter david curly. >> reporter: tonight new images of the shooting as abc news confirmed from two sources that the shooter had a list of republican congressional members in his pocket. that as another frightening view from the coffee shot across the street from the field of the horrific shooting. look to the right. a stray bullet blowing out a car window along the street. watch this. those two capitol hill police officers jump out of their black suv gathering at the back as a bullet hits the ground near their feet. the officers move into position to engage the shooter as

bystanders run to safety. out on the field, louisiana congressman steve scalise lies near second base hit by a bullet to his hip. once the shooter is down, he's evacuated, but still tonight he is in critical condition from that round which travelled around his pelvis, damaging his organs and bones. >> when he arrived he was in critical condition with an imminent risk of death. >> that's david curly reporting. as for the list of republicans found in the shooter's pocket, official also say there were about a dozen names ot. law enforcement says it is premature to characterize exactly what that list means but it is certainly unnerving. well, one of president trump's tweets is under scrutiny tonight. it appears he is admitting he is under investigation. abc senior white house correspondent cecelia vega has more on what he wrote and how the white house is explaining it. >> reporter: on camera, president trump mum and on message. >> are you under investigation

by the fbi? >> reporter: but on twitter a presidential rant turned into a stunning admission. the president publicly ak noijing for the first time he is indeed under investigation. he wrote, i am being investigated for firing the fbi director by the man who told me to fire the fbi director. witch hunt. despite those blunt words, a source close to the president's legal team claims he was not actually confirming the investigation, just referring to "the washington post's" report that it is happening. as for the man leading that so-called witch hunt, the president apparently talking about rod rosenstein, the deputy attorney general who appointed special counsel robert mueller to oversee the probe. before that, rosenstein wrote a memo deeply critical of former fbi director james comey. >> he's high lerespected, very good guy, very smart guy. the democrats like him, the republicans like him. he made a recommendation, but regardless of recommendation i was going to fire comey. >> reporter: the investigation

could now be looking into whether that decision amounts to obstruction of justice. rosenstein says he is standing by mueller's probe. >> director mueller will have the full degree of independence he needs to conduct that investigation appropriately. >> reporter: today's early morning trump tweets came hours after rosenstein released a vaguely worded statement complaining about anonymous leaks but not specifying which leaks, saying americans should exercise caution before accepting as true any stoerries attributed to anonymous officials. today it is said they fear he could fire rosen teen. dine feinstein saying the message that the president is sending through his tweets is that he believes the rule of law doesn't apply to him. >> it has not hindered his ability to make money. he voluntarily submitted a financial disclosure today. his new washington hotel saw

almost $20 million in revenue during first few months of operation. mar-a-lago took in $37 million and palm beach golf club reported $18 million in revenue, all since january. while mr. trump did not divest once he took office, he placed his enormous portfolio of assets in trust controlled by his two adult sons and senior executive. the report also listed $315 million in liabilities. president trump is setting the course for more tense relationships between the united states and cuba. the president criticized barack obama's dealings with the cuban government during a speech in miami this morning. mr. trump says he is cancelling the previous administration's "one-sided deal with cuba," although he is leaving many of its policies in place. trump is calling on cuba to release all political prisoners and to legalize all political parties. >> when cuba is ready to take concrete steps , to these ends e

will be ready, willing and able to come to the table to negotiate that much better deal. >> president trump's changes could restrict some u.s. companies from doing business in cuba. senator jerry moran of -- a kansas republican said it is bad for farmers. in a statement he says putting america first means exporting what we produce to other countries including cuba. a new medical report on the death of carrie fisher. the l.a. coroner's office could not conclusively determine what killed the actress. investigators found sleep apnea played a role in her death, but she also had multiple drugs in her system and a dangerous build up of fat in her arteries. fisher died at age 60 after a medical emergency in late december. the u.s. food and drug administration says it is concerned about the shortage of life-saving medication. it is working with the drug company pfizer to remedy this shortage. one of the drugs in short supply

police department works to rebuild its force, department leaders have been ramping up recruitment and that appears to be paying off. san jose police welcomed its newest police recruits today and also shared some exciting news that really is years in the making. "abc 7 news" reporter chris wynn has the story. >> reporter: on great oaks parkway in san jose, signs posted at the police south substation tell the story. >> i think we need the help out here, so i think having something a little closer would be nice, not having to wait so long. >> reporter: the building completed back in 2014 and originally meant to serve the city's southern division was supposed to be fully operational, a place where the

public could interact with police. however, that never happened. instead it became a training facility as the department lost more than a third of its officers over the past decade due to early retirement and frustration over pay. now a sense of optimism from san jose police chief eddie garcia. >> we're going to have a serious conversation over the next six months on a plan to utilize the substation in the manner fwhi it was intended. >> reporter: with 54 recruits the department's latest academy began with the largest class in several years, combined with the two previous academy classes more than 100 new officers are being trained, bringing department staffing to just under 1,000 sworn personnel. >> it is very positive. very positive for the community. >> reporter: residents remain hopeful that the city's best days are yet to come. >> i lived in san jose for most of my life, and the crime rate, i can see the difference in the the area, things have changed a lot. >> reporter: back in february, police ratified a new contract with a 20% pay raise over the next three years, which will make san jose more competitive

morning following the herd, literally. for first time ever there was a cattle drive as kickoff to the alameda county fair which opens tonight. a bunch of cowboys took the herd right down main street. it was a scene out of a hollywood western and the sidewalks were just jammed with thousands of people as that herd went by. yours truly got a chance to ride along and drive that herd. >> going well. we just have to make sure we keep the cattle together. they all want to break for it. >> just learned everything about it. you saw all of the herding dogs, you saw all all of the cowboys, even the cattle. so it was really fun. >> and what would a kalcattle de be without ms. roll ranch rodeo. it was a good day, not sweltering just yet but it is coming. >> it is going to be sweltering. dan, i believe you will be out there tomorrow night, right? >> we will be out there performing with my band tomorrow night as well. today was a great time. a loot of fun to be high in the saddle out there.
