looking outside right now it is still in the mid 80s in walnut creek and we want to touch base with sandhya patel. here it comes. >> indeed, dan. the first heat wave of the season so far. it is going to be a scorcher. you're going to feel it. as you look at live doppler 7 right now, we're seeing passing clouds. there's a heat advisory covering all inland areas from 11:00 a.m. saturday to 11:00 p.m. monday. i want to let you know the national weather service dropped the heat as visory for san francisco bay shoreline, but for the rest of the region in orange heat-related illness is possible. stay hydrated and there's an excessive heat warning for solano county sunday noon until 8:00 p.m. tuesday. dangerous hot weather means you will want to protect not only kids, the elderly and your pets. remember, it gets extremely hot inside a vehicle. even though we say it all the time, people sometimes still forget about their pets and kids inside their cars. i will be back with a look at the temperatures for your

father's day weekend and to let you know exactly when this heat wave is going to break, dan. >> sandhya, thanks very much. look at this beautiful sunset behind us. live picture there. it is stunning tonight. well, the heat drove many people south to the beach today, and as sandhya said it is expected to get hotter throughout the weekend, but authorities are warning beach goers about dangers to be aware of. abc reporter jeanine del vega spent the weekend in santa cruz. >> whether splashing in the water or playing this is sand, seemed everyone had the same idea today. the crowds on the main beach started building by late morning. many came to escape the bay area heat. >> it is 105 in brentwood, so we thought it would be perfect to come out here. we brought all of our kids and two friends. >> reporter: the team of marine safety officers and life guards are scanning the beach. they know those coming from out of town may not be used to rip currents, wind and surf. >> they get far out there, they turn around and look back at shore and realize how far out they are, they get tired.

they get cramps, a little panicked. our life guards are looking for people that maybe don't look like good swimmers. >> reporter: the life guard stressed not to turn your back on the ocean and those with children should be arm's length away. they encourage parents to check in at the life guard station to find out about hazards on the beach. >> i like big waves. >> reporter: to make it to the waves you have to brave the traffic on highway 17. the chp reports a huge increase in crashes along the corridor in the last year, most due to speed. >> give yourself extra time to get to where you're going. expect delays. there's going to be traffic. put your cellphone down. leave texting and being on your phone, it is illegal and unsafe. >> reporter: it all will be worth it once you arrive to enjoy the sights and sounds of summer. in santa cruz, jeanine del vega, "abc 7 news." when the weather gets warm, many people like to soak in the sun. "abc 7 news" was at lake merritt in oakland where we found people taking a jog or a leisurely

it is over two football fields long. officials scrambling to find out what happened and who is to blame. >> both ships should be looking at radar and try to turn away from each other. how the two large ships ended up hitting each other is hard to understand. >> reporter: japanese coast guard cutters are accompanying the die stroier, the ship is under her own power benavy says propulsion is limited. >> flames ripped through a warehouse in san francisco. fear of toxic smoke forces firefighters to order neighbors to stay indoor, to shelter in place. it broke out on donner avenue in the bay view district. witnesses say the smoke had an acidic smell. the fire department ordered a shelter in place down wind according to the chief joanne white. >> the concern is there might be toxic air. >> reporter: neighbors described the warehouse as a foundry where miniature cable car bells were manufactured. no one was inside which was fortunate because firefighters didn't have to go inside. >> i saw a car and a lot of equipment, it is loaded. >> you have to walk sways. it is floor to ceiling stacked with stuff. >> reporter: what kind of stuff? >> everything. furniture, metal, chandeliers, whatever you could name, car parts. >> there's all hidden pockets of stuff all over. >> reporter: did it look like a fire hazard? >> oh, it always did. >> reporter: how so? >> crammed to the ceiling full of stuff. >> what i can say is we have a all right of articles in there and objects that have contributed to us having a hard time putting the fire out. >> reporter: the fire department says it has no record of violations but it will be

looking hard at what happened here. they expect to remain on scene well into tomorrow. from san francisco, wayne freedman, "abc 7 news." a para greider is recovered as medical center in walnut creek after crashing in vallejo. you can see him rushed into a helicopter here. the crash happened about 4:00 this afternoon. firefighters say there were turbulent weather conditions at the time. the man has injuries to his spine and his knees. well, fire department rescuers pulled a man to safety at san francisco's -- it was over the scene near battery cross by. this man was stranded on the rock face. he tried to walk to the beach but kept slipping, couldn't make it. the fire department got the call about 2:30. it took them about 45 minutes to prepare the lines for a high angle rescue they call it. they brought him back up the cliff. no injuries were reported. everyone is doing okay. three people are in custody

tonight accused of attacking a lyft driver on a san francisco freeway earlier this year. 33-year-old dwayne johnson, 19 year old jerrold williams jr. face charges ranging from assault with a deadly weapon to battery. this dramatic cellphone video captured the attack last month on southbound 101. "abc 7 news" spoke with the driver, 35-year-old alex cantanna shortly after it happened. >> he looked at me in the eyes and all i could do is lay there and cry and think about my kid. >> on social media the chp thanked the public for giving them timms thps that led to the arrests. amazon just added a grocery chain to its shopping cart. why would the king of online shopping want to get into a brick and mortar business? also the apology uber sent out to drivers and riders. meteorologist sandhya patel will be back with the full forecast.

the brick and mortar grocery market, that means brick and mortar stores will have to beef up online presence to compete. that's because their existing networks will expand whole food as online and ordering system. neighborhood grocers hope customers prefer the personal touch like those at peed mont market. >> everybody that works here knows you. >> whole foods has 460 stores in the u.s., canada and the uk. amazon will keep the whole foods brand and the current management for now. in berkley, eric thomas, "abc 7 news." tonight california's unemployment rate is at a near 17-year low. new numbers released today from the employment development department show the state's unemployment rate in may dipped to 4.7%. it was 4.8% in april. this is the lowest unemployment rate since the year 2000. here in the bay area, every county but san francisco saw its unemployment rate go down. it actually stayed flat in san

francisco. san ma thai owe county has the lowest unemployment rate at 2.4%. solano county has highest at 4.3%. uber is getting the cover treatment from "time" magazine and it is not kind. take a look at this. you can see the headline, uber fell alongside a picture of uber car driving into a massive, fiery wreck. at the center of that wreck uber headquarters in san francisco. it's been a difficult week for the company. this week ceo travis calinick took a leave of absence, the company's number two quit and a board member made a sexist remark leading him to resign. uber sent out a memo to several u.s. markets lettings them now they're trying to improve. uber says, in expanding so quickly we failed to prioritize the people that helped get us here. ultimately, the measure of our success is satisfaction of our riders, drivers and employees, and we realize we have fallen short. well, those winter storms

that blanket the sierra in snow could be triggering earthquakes in northern california. uc berkley researcher chris johnson found snow and rank press down on the sierra nevada. the mountain range springs back up as the snow melt. that movement increases seismic activity about 10% during the spring. other areas are affected at different times. >> the central coastal ranges we see the stresses more favorable for slip are in the late summer and early fall. >> that's caused by drying streams in the summer. the research does not suggest there is an earthquake season in california, by the way. all right. it is the heat season, and it is going to be pretty hot this weekend. work, individually. >> mr. cosby is charged with sexually assaulting a woman at his philadelphia home in 2004. he faced similar accusations from dozens of other women. now back to the shiengt at a ball feet outside our nation's capitol. sources tell "abc 7 news" the gunman had a list of government officials in his pocket. here is abc news reporter david curly. >> reporter: tonight new images of the shooting as abc news confirmed from two sources that the shooter had a list of republican congressional members in his pocket. that as another frightening view from the coffee shot across the street from the field of the horrific shooting. look to the right. a stray bullet blowing out a car window along the street. watch this. those two capitol hill police officers jump out of their black suv gathering at the back as a bullet hits the ground near their feet. the officers move into position to engage the shooter as

bystanders run to safety. out on the field, louisiana congressman steve scalise lies near second base hit by a bullet to his hip. once the shooter is down, he's evacuated, but still tonight he is in critical condition from that round which travelled around his pelvis, damaging his organs and bones. >> when he arrived he was in critical condition with an imminent risk of death. >> that's david curly reporting. as for the list of republicans found in the shooter's pocket, official also say there were about a dozen names ot. law enforcement says it is premature to characterize exactly what that list means but it is certainly unnerving. well, one of president trump's tweets is under scrutiny tonight. it appears he is admitting he is under investigation. abc senior white house correspondent cecelia vega has more on what he wrote and how the white house is explaining it. >> reporter: on camera, president trump mum and on message. >> are you under investigation

by the fbi? >> reporter: but on twitter a presidential rant turned into a stunning admission. the president publicly ak noijing for the first time he is indeed under investigation. he wrote, i am being investigated for firing the fbi director by the man who told me to fire the fbi director. witch hunt. despite those blunt words, a source close to the president's legal team claims he was not actually confirming the investigation, just referring to "the washington post's" report that it is happening. as for the man leading that so-called witch hunt, the president apparently talking about rod rosenstein, the deputy attorney general who appointed special counsel robert mueller to oversee the probe. before that, rosenstein wrote a memo deeply critical of former fbi director james comey. >> he's high lerespected, very good guy, very smart guy. the democrats like him, the republicans like him. he made a recommendation, but regardless of recommendation i was going to fire comey. >> reporter: the investigation

could now be looking into whether that decision amounts to obstruction of justice. rosenstein says he is standing by mueller's probe. >> director mueller will have the full degree of independence he needs to conduct that investigation appropriately. >> reporter: today's early morning trump tweets came hours after rosenstein released a vaguely worded statement complaining about anonymous leaks but not specifying which leaks, saying americans should exercise caution before accepting as true any stoerries attributed to anonymous officials. today it is said they fear he could fire rosen teen. dine feinstein saying the message that the president is sending through his tweets is that he believes the rule of law doesn't apply to him. >> it has not hindered his ability to make money. he voluntarily submitted a financial disclosure today. his new washington hotel saw

police department works to rebuild its force, department leaders have been ramping up recruitment and that appears to be paying off. san jose police welcomed its newest police recruits today and also shared some exciting news that really is years in the making.
