kristen, a very moving vigil tonight here in novato. vinnie etcheber, husband, brought his kids to the vigil night. the family did not speak to the crowd, but the crowd definitely spoke to them. >> we want y to know that we love you. >> reporter: hvy hearts and wordss of comfort for san frcisco police officer vinnie etcheber and his young son and their mom.who are now without hundreds came to san ramon elementary school in novato to light candles for stacee etcheber, a role model parent wi an amazing spirit. >> if stacee was here tonight we uld hear her say hey, toots, i've got you, hold on. >> reporter: stacee and her husband were in las vegas for a concert which became a shooting massacre. vinnie ran to help victims and told stacee to runor cover. she was killed. >> i guarantee youis wife tried to help people out too. that's just who those two were. >> reporter: brother-in-law al etcheber says his family is grieving. his young niece and nephew stl

trying to understand. they have one question. >> the question was why? why did he shootmommy? you know. and we didn't have an answer. >> there are no easy answers except there is pure evil in the world. >> reporter: vinnie etcheber was supported by nearly a den san francisco motorcycle officers. th unit he once rode with. >> it's a really tough time for our department. for the city of san francio, here in novato. everybody's grieving. >> we choose love and we're there for you. >> reporter: the community vowing their support to the etcheber family, bringing light and love to a dark hour. in novato, cornell barnard, abc 7 news. >> both stacee etcheber and another alum nah from california highchool in san ramon died in theshooting. 57-year-old denise cohen grew up in san ramonut most recently lived in santa barbara county, where she worked as a property manager. a thi bay area woman also died. 32-year-old michelle vo is a san jose native. she had been living inthern

california and workings an insurance agent. friends say she was brave and loved toexplore. we're learning many more details tonight about the gunman's tactics and the investigation into the mass the focus right now is on the gunman's girliend. just a few hours ago marilou danley landed at l.a.x., retuing from the philippines, whe she was at the time of the shooting. federal investigators greet her at the airport. meantime,e've got our first look inside the hotel roo where shooter stephen paddock assembled an arsenal. investigators revealed paddo likely converted semi-automatic weaps into automatic weons. and a hotel security guard heroically tried to stop the shting. approached paddock's room. paddockired through the door, wounding the man. abc new reporter lana zac has the latest. >> reporter: good evening, dan. we are learning so ny new details including how many guns the shooter possessed. 47. but still there is no word as to

both directions. there's also this growing memorial as the city is just trying to put one foot in front of the other for now. slowly things are beginning t move forward in las vegas. these people jt trying to get eventually get back to work and errands. >> thought i was going to be able to just come and pick up my car with my i.d.,ave it ready. but there's a line. i don't even think i'm going to >> i can't really do nothing without my car. i've just got to sit and wait like everyone else. >> reporter: hundreds of cars were left at the concert venue when people ran for their lives. we're also just starting to learn about theundreds of people it took to respond in the hours after the mass shting. folks like psychiatst john werjo. >> we h our own specific roles. mine was to addss patients already in the hospital trying to figure out what beds we could fr up to open them up for the victims that came in from this

horrific event. >> reporter: he's a uc berkeley alum who now lives in las vegas. >> so as a psychiatrist my work really starts from here on t. and it's going to be more of a marathon. >> i'm just thinking of all the time running a hiding. >> reporter: svivors often replay the events. >> just sitting at the sino last night eating at one of the restaurants andsomebody's slot machine went off and just hear that t-t-t it was like -- >> reporter: sharing a tight hug today. they returned to the scene hoping to heal some their emotional wounds. >> i'm still trying to process it l. >> reporter: and a quick update on one of those victims. joanna. her boyfriend had to go back to the e.r. today. he was shot in the arm. he is doing just fine, but they missed their flights. so they are going back to california tomorrow. she will be backn the bay area tomorrow. and frankly, that is the mood out here everyone just playing things by ear. and taking things one step at a time. live from the las vegas strip, i'm jessica castro, abc 7 news.
