is where a 19-year-old man has died and they are sending out crime scene cleaners to come and take care of the final parts of the scene here. but the investigation continues. here's what we know right now. according to the police chief here in danville, an suv with several teenagers and young adults were driving down glen road which is very close to san ramon valley high school when a 19-year-old man made the split second decision to jump onto the outside of the vehicle and take a ride. he jumped on the driver's side, traveled less than 100-yard according to the police when he lost his grip on the outside of the suv less than 100 yards fell off. he died from hitting his head, getting run over or a combination of the two. the coroner will determine that. police are still sorting it out. they don't know how fast the suv was going. they say it doesn't appear to be a case of car surfing. they say it didn't look like that or ghost riding, any of these things that are popular

with the younger crowd right now. it was a tragic accident. the coroner will determine the cause of death. he was 19 from the city of alamo. his family is going to need to be informed of what happened. >> thank you, anne makovec in danville. four people were hit in oakland last night in shootings. the first was 9:00 at arroyo recreation center a man and teenager injured. an hour later another person shot in an attempted robbery near the berkeley border. just after 11:00 another person shot near market and san pablo. that person now in critical

condition. time now is 6:04. 8 people dead, a dozen more injured. they were in the mojave desert to watch the california 200 race outside lucerne valley. about 100 miles northeast of los angeles. the race was on federal land but the bureau of land management says it was up to the race organizer to make sure that it was all safe. but no one kept spectators from standing right beside the racecourse. on of the victims pushed children to safety before he was killed by a truck that flew out of control into the crowd. >> just to think, you know, the first thing he did was not to save himself but to save his 3-year-old daughter and his friend's son just to hear that... >> every year, we are thinking, you know, people are standing too close and this year they are in the wrong place. >> people shouldn't have been allowed that close to the track but when that car becomes airborne, it goes wherever it wants to. the poor driver would have no

control over it. >> the driver whose truck hit the fans was not hurt and is not blamed for the deaths. a concord man is in custody suspected of planting pipe bombs at a city park. the concord police bomb squad was able to safely detonate all three explosives after they were found last month at newhall park. police say an informant supplied information last week and that led investigators to the montana drive home of timothy david willson on saturday. >> they contacted him as he walked away from the residence. they determined he was under the influence of a controlled substance and they arrested him for that. they contacted a judge in contra costa county and secured a search warrant. >> police say a search of willson's home turned up gunpowder and other materials consistent with the pipe bombs found at the park. willson is in county jail in martinez with bail set at $730,000. federal agents investigating a fire that gutted a post office in sonoma

county. the fire burned for almost seven hours saturday in healdsburg. the fire chief says the flames were tough to fight because the fire made its way into the roof line of the building. at this point, it's not clear how the fire started. two firefighters were injured but they are expected to be all right. school in much of the bay area opening for the new year this week. many of them opening today and that includes san jose's trace elementary school where many classes will be held in portable rooms. a buyer last month did $10 million worth of damage there destroying the main building on campus. donations have been pouring in from all over the country to help the school. officials say they have all the supplies they need now but they do still need cash donations. it's 6:07. coming up, shrimp boats hitting the water again in the gulf of mexico. the plan to assure the public that the crustaceans are safe to eat. >> okay, good.

of the altamont pass. delays are also growing on highway 4 through antioch. we'll give you a look at some more drive times plus some live traffic cameras. your full commute in 6 minutes. all right. elizabeth, thanks so much. shrimp season is getting started today in the waters off of the louisiana coast. they started fishing last week offshore from mississippi. the big question now is how much damage has the gulf oil leak caused to the shrimp? even if the shrimp are free of oil, it may be a challenge to get consumers to believe it. there are concerns some shrimpers might try to sell contaminated shrimp. health official plan to put seafood under the microscope to check for signs of oil. they are also working on a test to determine if the disexperts santa that was dumped in the gulf -- if the dispersant that was dumped in the gulf is a health threat. president obama will be in los angeles for a democratic fundraiser. california is expected to get more than 10% of the money from a jobs bill signed by the president last week.

california is in line for 1 to in$2 billion out of the $10 billion that's in the bill to keep teachers from being laid off. it's not clear how much jobs will be saved in california because the state budget hasn't been passed. the federal funds should start arriving later this month if a budget is approved. special election set for tomorrow that could alter the balance of the state senate a runoff for the 15th district seat previously held by republican abel maldonado. it stretches from southern santa clara county to santa barbara county. republican sam blakesly an assemblyman from san luis obispo got the most votes in june. he faces democrat john laird a former assemblyman from aptos. if laird wins it would put democrats within one vote of a two-thirds majority in the state senate. that two-thirds is needed to approve budget and tax increases. it's 6:12.

all of them. and classes will start this morning at the san jose school that suffered a $10 million fire last month. classes will be held in portable buildings at trace elementary school. the superintendent of san jose schools will be at trace elementary school when the doors open at 8:30 this morning. it's 6:20. police in livermore are lending a helping hand to families that cannot afford school supplies they need. officers took up positions at target and office max stores yesterday asking shoppers to buy a little extra for needy kids. the donated school supplies including pencils, erasers, compasses, they still use compasses? were then loaded into the back of a police cruiser and police plan to give backpacks filled with school supplies to about 300 students. >> that's nice. it adds up. you have a huge list every school year things you need to get. >> and every teacher -- ever been a classroom mom? >> oh, yes.

island two hours later. right now the crew of the international space station making its third spacewalk in a little more than a week. >> if all goes well the spacewalk will finish the job of repairing a cooling system. an ammonia coolant pump broke down at the end of last month. now, since then, the space station has been operating on just half of its normal cooling capacity. if today's installation of a spare pump succeeds they hope to have it up and running by thursday. this is my favorite story of the morning. you like it, too? yeah. >> good video. every once in a while you hear about animals escaping. how about zebras in sacramento? it happened in carmichael in sacramento county. the zebras being loaded on to a truck. saturday they were apparently spooked by dogs and ran off. then they ransom more. >> yeah, they did.

down glen road when a 19-year- old man made the split second decision to jump on the outside of the vehicle and take a ride. he jumped on the driver's side, traveled less than 100 yards according to police when he lost his grip and fell off of the suv. he died almost instantly from hitting his head or getting run over or a combination of the two. the police are letting the coroner sort that outline out. police are still trying to figure out exactly what led up to this as well as how fast the suv was going. they say that this does not appear, though, to be a case of what's known as car surfing. they say it's more of a planned event when somebody would try to ride on top of the car, that this just appeared to be a 19- year-old who decided to jump on the side of the car to take a ride. he called it just a split second decision that led to a, quote, horrible tragic accident. now, the coroner is going to have to determine again the exact cause of death and identify this young man. all we know right now is that

he was 19 years old and from alamo which is a nearby town here to danville. we have also heard reports that maybe the group of young people was looking for a party at the time. but that's all we know. juliette? >> all right, anne makovec. thank you. also, three separate shootings within three hours last night in oakland. a total of four people hit. their conditions ranging from serious to stable. the first shooting happened just before 9:00 p.m. last night near arroyo recreation center. a man and a teenager were injured. about an hour later another person was shot in an attempted robbery near the berkeley border and just after 11:00 another person shot near market and san pablo. that person now in critical condition. eight people are dead, a dozen more injured, they were in the mojave desert to watch the california 200 race outside lucerne valley. that's about 100 miles northeast of los angeles. the race was on federal land when a truck in the race flew a

hours saturday in healdsburg. the fire chief says the flames were tough to fight because the fire had made it way into the roof line of the building. at this point, it's not clear how that started. two firefighters were injured but they are expected to be okay. a san jose elementary school will start the new semester on time this morning despite a destructive fire on campus that happened just weeks ago. kcbs radio's matt bigler joins us now from trace elementary school to explain how the san jose unified school district has pulled it off. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you guys. yeah, this is a pretty amazing story. it was just last month there was a huge fire in this multiclassroom building right in the middle of the campus. this morning, for the first day of school, it's now been completely removed that rubble cleared out that would have been a safety hazard for kids. it's been fenced off and students will be going to school for the first day of classes this morning. a lot of them will be going to these portables. they are just across the way that you can see. but across the street, this is where the school district has

set up basically this compound of portables so the students can return to the same campus and still continue to go to school while the building is under construction. a few minutes ago we saw welding going on, on fence across the way. they are rushing to make sure it happens in time for students. we spoke with the school superintendent with the san jose unified school district. he says they have been able to pull this off with a huge outpouring of support from the community. >> still receiving donation both from the community and from a different business that has come in. the teachers received 100 gift cards from office max so that they would be able to go out and buy materials to resupply their classrooms. >> reporter: the fire that happened here just after the 4th of july last month, that is still under investigation. they determined the san jose fire department determined it was arson. so far no suspects have been arrested. they are still looking for tips

we have a new accident in san francisco. if you are trying to access doyle driver northbound 101 at marina boulevard on the golden gate bridge there is an accident that's partially blocking the marina boulevard on-ramp. so watch out for that. we'll continue to follow that accident. it's in a bad spot obviously. but if you are commuting into san francisco southbound 101 across the san pablo of the golden gate bridge, looks great except for some fog kind of making it hard to see, traffic is flowing great approaching the pay gates.

metering lights have been on for 10 minutes so the only delays we are seeing are in some of the fast traffic lanes, just minor delays but it is a little sluggish up the incline. all of your approaches still look great though. no big issues. a little bit of slow traffic as you can see from our live sensors through berkeley. no big hot spots. more congestion out of the altamont pass. drive times continue to grow. 20 minutes now from the altamont pass out towards the dublin interchange. and we can show you actually a bit of a delay here especially in the left lanes approaching tassajara. so gets slow once you get closer to 680. and highway 4, ugly commute. but it's always kind of bad through here. a street through somersville hugging around 15 miles per hour. if you are commuting in the south bay out of downtown san jose looks great, two thumbs up very light on 280 and 101

back up to you. >> thank you. 6:46. our financial update focuses on silicon valley in fremont this morning. >> there are a couple of deals to tell you about. jason brooks with kcbs and cbsmoneywatch.com is here with us. good morning, jason. >> good morning, juliette. good morning, john. yeah, one company selling, another company is being bought. the one being bought is fremont- based 3 par bought by computermaker dell for about $1.1 million in cash. three par has about 650 employees, they make data storage system services something that dell wants to use as it looks for corporate customers. good deal for 3par. the company lost money for five years and lost 30% of its stock value this year. no word on what might happen to management or employees. intel announcing its buying a division of texas instruments that builds cable modems. that's something than a tell is building into its smart modem system. overall, wall street lower for a fifth straight session.

the down beat news out of japan, its economy only grew an anemic .4% in the last quarter and slower than in the 1st quarter and it also saw china overtake japan as the world's second biggest economy. they have gone back and forth over the past couple of years. but with china's growth right now with 10% annual clip it looks to hang on to that number 2 ranking for some time to come. looking at wall street, dow lower by about 30 points. nasdaq just turned positive it's up by 1, s&p right now john and juliette is down by 3. >> very good. thank you, jason brooks with kcbs and cbsmoneywatch.com. sylvester stallone still making a lot of money at the movies. . >> drop your guns! >> i'll take the four on the left. >> i'll take the two on the right and leave the rest alone. >> stallone is one of the stars of this weekend's number one movie the expendables. it's about a group of

you'd reach for an oral-b toothbrush too. oral-b. overnight. anne makovec is in danville... where police have been inte least a dozen there may have been a daredevil stunt that killed a teenager in the east bay overnight. anne makovec is in danville where police have been on the vowing a dozen witness. anne. >> reporter: they continue to talk to people around this neighborhood. in fact, i have some new information after i just spoke with a neighbor here who said that she has been hearing teenagers racing up and down glen road here in danville for about an hour before the accident had happened. and that's interesting because police originally said that they have not had any reports of a ruckus in this neighborhood. now, let's go back to midnight. that's when the 911 call came in according to police. they say that an suv with several teenagers and young adults was driving down glen road when a 19-year-old man made the split second decision they say to jump on to the

outside of the vehicle and take a ride. he jumped on the driver's side, traveled less than 100 yards according to the police, when he lost his grip and fell off. he died almost instantly. it looks like he hit his head and may have been run over. police are still sorting this out. they don't know how fast the suv was going. they do say though it doesn't appear to be a case of what's known as car surfing. you can see out here live again a white speed bump there behind me. the neighbor that i spoke with said she was hearing cars up and down banging on to these speed bumps so she figures they were going at a high rate of speed. but the police say it wouldn't have to be going very fast to have an accident like what happened once he lost his grip and fell off of this suv. john and juliette? >> anne, thank you very much. anne makovec in danville. school in much of the bay area opening for the new year this week and many of them today. that includes san jose's trace elementary school, where many

classes will be held actually in portable rooms. a fire last month did $10 million worth of damage there destroying the main building on campus. donation have been pouring in from all over silicon valley and the nation to help out the school. administrators say they have all the supplies they need now but they are still accepting cash donations. let's go back out to san francisco. they have shut down the marina boulevard on-ramp now to northbound 101, doyle drive. there was an accident there. so traffic may begin to back up here shortly. the good news is across the span of the golden gate bridge, so far we are not seeing delays coming into san francisco. so we'll continue to update you on that accident there at marina boulevard during the traffic cutins during the cbs early show. in the meantime, 880/237 your silicon valley ride nice and quiet. it doesn't start to back up until 7:30, 8:00. the metering lights are on but we are not seeing any delays. but as you said, school starts, so watch out your speeds in the
