[ laughter ] in the headlines, the number of eggs being recalled is growing as is the number of people getting sick from salmonella. anne makovec is in san francisco with a check on how many people are sick in the bay area. good morning, anne. reporter: the numbers are climbing. by now, a lot of people have heard about the recall. people that thought maybe they just had the 24-hour bug are reporting their illnesses to local health departments like the one here behind me in san francisco. now, the big picture, hundreds of people have gotten sick throughout the country linked to the salmonella outbreak in

eggs in four states, possibly more, all coming from a farm in iowa. the centers for disease control and prevention is working with state health departments to investigate the illnesses. no deaths have been reported. but california has already reported 266 illnesses since june and believes many of them are related to the eggs. they have been bought in grocery stores and served in restaurants and local health departments have been tracking cases for weeks now. 14% of the state's cases are in the south bay. 38 confirmed cases, three people actually were sick enough to have to go to the hospital. and at least one restaurant in santa clara county is linked to the outbreak. but the health department there won't give out its name. >> we got some reports and some people that were sick and they had eaten at the same restaurant. a staff member with environmental health went on yelp and took a look to see what was going on there and found a number of people were complaining of being ill after eating there. and so we're testing all those

people. we've confirmed one. so pro-actively we have been able to figured out a restaurant that purchased this eggs and was using them in cooking and were getting sick. >> reporter: there is an 8 hour to 72 hours period of getting sick after eating contaminated eggs. it can be life-threatening. it grows inside of the eggs not just on the shell so thoroughly cooking eggs can kill the bacteria. but health officials are recommending that people just throw them away or return the recalled eggs. now, to find out if maybe a carton in your refrigerator could be one of the recalled war tons, there are a couple of numbers to look for. julie and john have more information on where to find the numbers on the cartons. >> thank you, anne makovec. we have a list of the brands of eggs under recall and the lot numbers you need to look for on the cartons on our website at cbs5.com. tomorrow is going to be a

furlough friday after all for 150,000 california state workers. yesterday, the state supreme court overturning a lower court decision that had temporarily blocked the unpaid days off. governor schwarzenegger had ordered the state workers to take three furlough days a month to save money during the state's budget impasse. state lawmakers still haven't reached a budget agreement. this is more than 7 weeks now into the fiscal year. the state supreme court is far from done with this issue. next month it will hear arguments on whether the governor has the power to order furlough days. >> we hope to have a budget before then because the controller today said within two to four weeks we are going to have to start paying our bills in ious. >> most state offices including the department of motor vehicles, public health, fish & game will be closed tomorrow and next friday. nearly two dozen people arrested when a protest against proposed budget cuts got out of

hand. this was in sacramento. hundreds of demonstrators hit the streets around the state capital yesterday. they are upset over planned cuts to programs for seniors, kids and the disabled. the trouble began when some protestors blocked a downtown intersection for hours. 22 people arrested, most cited and released. the dispute between a.c. transit and its bus drivers and mechanics is going back to court. yesterday, a.c. transit directors decided to appeal a court ruling that ordered the transited agency into arbitration over a new contract. the board also voted to appeal a separate order which banned a.c. transit from imposing new working conditions. a spokesman says the agency will comply with the court order and take part in arbitration while the appeals are considered. time now 5:06. the last of american combat troops in iraq moved out overnight and has crossed into the border of kuwait. >> we're going home! we won! it's over!

>> the fourth striker brigade second infantry division pulled out seven years and five months after the war started. that group included at least one bay area soldier lieutenant steven doyle of san jose. some 50,000 u.s. troops will stay another year, however, in noncombat roles including training and support. special forces will also continue to help iraqis hunt for terrorists. international guard troops are getting ready for deployment to the u.s. border. governor schwarzenegger says the first of hundreds of troops have finished their mission. they will be patrolling the bothered. they will be on the job by september 1 and the deployment will last up to a year. in all, president obama proposes putting 1200 national guard personnel along the mexican boarder. > >> coming up next, it almost looked like a military operation. we'll tell you what drew helicopters and guns to marin

people. it happened on third at the t line platform. two officers confronted the person. they say he didn't pay the fare and say that person started resisting and two other people got involved. police eventually detained all three. they were cited and released. one officer was hurt but not seriously. a big pot bust in western marin and people who live in the area tell us they have known something illegal was going on for some time because they have seen armed men coming and going. the marin county sheriff's department raided the property in the sky oaks area near fairfax close to alpine dam. helicopters lifted marijuana plants down to a staging area, where agents then loaded them in dutch trucks. >> the people who are responsible for these illegal operations have no regard for public safety. these types of criminal enterprises result in erosion damage created by the clear cutting of indigenous plants as

affecting any passenger areas. but it is irritating some airline employees in the 20- year-old terminal a. so far no one figured out the source of the smell. some airlines are threatening to withhold rent payments until the problem is solved. bay bridge contractors getting ready for one of the biggest lifts in the construction of the new eastern span. four new deck segments have arrived in oakland from china. that's the part of the bridge that you will eventually be driving on. each of the segments is 250 feet long, weighs 1500 tons. 12 of the 28 deck segments already in place. caltrans says that the four new segments will be installed on the bridge sometime early next week. there is still no word on what caused a roller coaster to get stuck at six flags discovery kingdom in vallejo late yesterday afternoon. this was the boomerang coaster. 26 people were on the ride. all facing forward. they were upright. everyone escorted off the ride, no one hurt. park officials did some tests

aren't any. the chp reports are empty right now which is great. 101 there may still be a little bit of roadwork between 880 and bernal traveling southbound 101. various lanes may be blocked until about 6:00 but we are not seeing any delays of any kind on any sensor because of it. so that's the good news. if you are commuting out of downtown san jose that's what it looks like on northbound 280 approaching the 880. if you commute highway 9 near two bar road it was closed early this morning after a car hit a pole in the area. no estimated time when they will get that stretch of freeway re-opened. but in the meantime "american idol" tryouts mentioned in this as well, if you use 280 to commute into san francisco, the "american idol" tryouts are starting this morning and there is a huge crowd lined up over by the ballpark. so we are already seeing delays on northbound king from 280 out towards at&t. that is your traffic. for your forecast, here's tracy.

area all around in several counties. we'll get to those numbers in a minute but the number of people reporting illnesses has been rising as more people hear about the recall, more are coming to report the symptoms to local health departments. so here are those numbers. here in san francisco county, 25 people have record getting sick. alameda county, 16. contra costa county, 22. san mateo county 8 people, and santa clara county, check that out, 38 people including three people that were so sick they had to go to the hospital. common symptoms of the salmonella poisoning are diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. it comes on within 8 to 72 hours after eating the bad eggs. >> i made breakfast for dinner and i woke up in the middle of the night horrible stomach pains. >> most healthy adults if we got this we are going to get sick and well without

treatment. but those people elderly, infants and people with immune diseases need to be careful. >> reporter: it's been challenging for health officials to track because they can't fingerprint this form of salmonella as precisely as they can other kinds of food contamination. the fda, the cdc, both working together with local health departments to figure this all out. now, the salmonella has been found both inside the eggs and on the shells. so health departments say just throw them out, don't try to cook them, don't take your chances on this. it's not worth it when you look at the price of a dozen eggs. we have some numbers for you on where to look on your carton to see if you have one of these recalled cartons. >> anne, thank you. that's on our website, cbs5.com. so how does salmonella contaminate eggs? one sway from the outside. that's when the egg shells come in contact with fecal matter but this outbreak is believed to have come from inside the shell. salmonella can infect the

ovaries of healthy looking hens and then contaminate the eggs before the shells are formed. there is no way to tell by looking whether an egg is infected so if you're concerned, check their eggs, check your eggs against those on the recall list. we do have that on our website, cbs5.com. the brands and lot numbers that you need to look for on the cartons, it's all at cbs5.com. if you can't did there, the usda also last it on their website. time now 5:35. there is a man in jail this morning for monday's stabbing aboard a san francisco muni bus in the sunset district. 18-year-old kyle clark from san francisco was arrested yesterday evening. the stabbing victim is a 35- year-old man who tried to intervene when he saw the suspect slapping a woman this is back of the bus. that victim is recovering from multiple stab wounds. after the stabbing, the us is suspects and the woman got off the bus -- the suspect and the woman got off the bus together.

the widow of a virginia man spent last night in oakland the city where her husband was murdered but wendy kang was able to experience the good side of the city a community that organized a memorial and fundraiser for her family. her husband, jinghong kang, was shot and killed during a downtown robbery last month. he was supposed to interview for a job at google the next day. >> though my husband's life is short, he lived a very meaningful life. so let's all live our lives to its fullest means and values. >> the kangs have three sons, ages 10, 12 and 17. george huggins and althena housley are in jail accused of the murder. police say kang was robbed of $17 before he was shot. tomorrow is going to be a furlough friday after all for 150,000 california state workers. yesterday, the state supreme

state capital yesterday upset over planned cuts to programs for seniors, kids and the disabled. the trouble began when some protestors blocked a downtown intersection for several hours. 22 people arrested, most were cited and released. the city of san jose is repaving miles of streets with the help of federal stimulus money. but in many cases the jobs remain incomplete. the reason, a worldwide shortage of paint needed to mark those streets. some people contend it could be dangerous. right now the city only has about 2,000 gallons of paint left. so it's being rationed, used only for the most critical markings, like stop bars and line dividers. >> it's a perfect storm in that there are problems in delivering the raw materials that are used to make the chemicals in paint. there are production problems in the plants that produce the paint in the chemicals in the materials. there are distribution issues

as well as demand issues. >> meanwhile, the city says it has to move forward with the repainting or risk losing the money. an odor is plaguing some offices at mineta international airport in san jose. it's a sewer-like stench. it's not affecting any passenger areas but it is irritating airline employees in offices behind the ticket counter in the 20-year-old terminal "a." the smell has been around, off and on, for about five-month. but so far no one has figured out the source or a permanent solution. the "mercury news" says some airline officials are so frustrated that they are threatening to withhold monthly rent payments. some commuters may soon start noticing things looking a little spiffier on bart trains. bart is spending some of its budget surplus to actually clean the trains. it's also putting new seat cushions in 50 bart cars of the 660 or so that are in the

iowa. more than 100 people in the bay area are believed to have gotten sick from eating the bad eggs. furlough fridays are back. the state supreme court yesterday overturned a lower court decision that had temporarily blocked the furlough days for state workers while governor schwarzenegger ordered 150,000 workers to take three unpaid days off per month to save money during the state budget impasse. most state offices will be closed tomorrow and next friday. the dispute between a.c. transit and its bus drivers and mechanics is going back to court. yesterday a.c. transit directors decided to appeal a court ruling that ordered the transit agency into arbitration over a new contract. the board also voted to appeal a separate order which had banned a.c. transit from imposing new working conditions. time now 5:48. three swimming pools, a 25,000- square-foot master suite and bulletproof glass is a $300

share. a 60% premium over mcafee's close yesterday of just under $30. both boards of directors have unanimously approved the deal and the deal still requires mcafee shareholder approval, however. it needs regulatory clearances as well. a number of americans filing first time claims for unemployment at its highest level since last november. it jumped by 12,000 last year for initial claims. there were 500,000 new claims. claims have increased four of the last five weeks. having a glass of wine every now and then could make you smarter. that's according to a new study! out of norway. a new study! >> researchers followed more than 5,000 men and women for seven years. they found those who drank moderate amounts of wine scored higher on cognitive tests. the results were even higher for women who drank four or more times in a two-week period.
