returning to their roots. here is julie watts. >> reporter: winning the title of best wi-fi hot spot means big business in this town. >> we have so many start ups that come in everyday, meeting, talking about business. if it wasn't for the internet and ability to go online and sour product and work on your product, then, you know, maybe we wouldn't be as successful as we are. >> reporter: while fast wi-fi keeps people cooling back during the week, it's the no wi- fi on weekend policy that attraction customers like don. >> people are so incredibly antisocial. i go into coffee shops and everyone is sitting with laptops and their another buds in. it's creepy. >> reporter: this is one of many coffee shops that are reducing or eliminating wi-fi altogether. it's a niche market where people can find a tech free zone. when they flip the switch on

shops for them. >> reporter: julie watts, cbs 5. 20 people are homeless after a three-alarm fire at a south bay apartment building. it started on canon gate court around 10:15 this morning. the flames spread to two other apartments. no one was injured. >> i look at it this way. my family is okay. everybody in the house is okay. be optimistic on things. everybody is okay. this can be fixed. family can't be fixed. >> all of the building's 20 residents were evacuated after power was cut off in all the units. the cause of the fire is under investigation. a 14-year-old girl who lead a man through my space is now missing. fran police say tiffany alvarez has been talking to a man the past three or four months. she is 5'10", 180 pounds. they believe she might be with a man named gino. he is in his 30s.

he is described as 6-foot tall, dark hair, dark eyes with a light complexion. the girl's parents believe she might be going to texas. neighbors of the couple arrested on suspicion of kidnapping jaycee dugard says calm has finally returned to their neighborhood. walnut avenue became the center of media coverage when phillip and nancy gur rid do were taken into custody the couple has been in jail for almost a year awaiting trial. a father and son suspected of violent home invasion robbery have been arrested. vacaville police say the armed suspects broke in yesterday afternoon and assaulted three people. after they fled, police stopped the suspect vehicle on i-80 near davis street. the 43-year-old father and 23- year-old son were booked into the jail. new summer friendly regulations go into effect on gift cards. they call for full disclosure

of fees and expiration dates. this means gift cards must hold their value for five years. cards can expire but any money left can be transferred free of charge to a new card. companies can't charge a nonuse fee until one year after purchase. no more than one fee can be charged to a card hold near one month. these new rules do not apply to prepaid debit cards, rebate and royalty cards and one time action fees. state lawmakers are pushing for pension reform so city officials can no longer take advantage of loopholes in the state's retirement law. state assembly woman was in our studio this morning to talk about a new bill that she is sponsoring. >> this is a problem that needs to be addressed and we have worked with legal council throughout the bill. we have been making amendments to try to attack this problem to make sure that people can't spike their pensions. >> she said city managers like

those in bell along with police and firefighters are cashing out sick and vacation time to boost their pensions. we take a complete failure of the iraqi forces for the u.s. to resume operation fair. that is what the top american commander says days after the last u.s. combat brigade left iraq. elizabeth sanchez shows us there was more violence today. reporter: general ray odeado says he is sure that iraqi troops are ready to handle the country's security. on "face the nation" sunday, he wasn't ready to declare victory but said things are going well. >> to determine whether we won the war or not, we can see that in three to five years as we see how iraq turned out. >> reporter: on thursday, the last combat unit left iraq more than seven years after the toppling of saddam hussein but 50,000 american soldiers will remain in the country, mostly

as teachers and trainers. dramatic pictures of hundreds of armored vehicles crossing the border into kuwait left many wondering whether iraq is ready for the difficult road ahead. those dangers were clear sunday when a bomb exploded outside of baghdad killing one person and injuring several others. another roadside bomb wound the for people in the capital. u.s. officials sat way to end the attacks is not by keeping american troops in the country but by building up the iraqi government. >> we all would like to see it completed as soon as possible. i think the quicker the better. it's important that they get moving forward with their continued development. >> reporter: president obama will address the nation about iraq when he returns from vacation. he is expected to review the war and talk about the next phase. elizabeth sanchez, cbs news. a huge demonstration in new york over the proposed mosque planned near ground zero. protestors stood outside the

building on park avenue saying they want the project moved some place else. the mosque and community center are still on track to be built two blocks way from ground zero. a group called the coalition to honor ground zero sponsored the rally. nearby pro mosque group held a counter demonstration. iran's president calls it ambassador of death to iran's enemies. the country unveiled its first domestically manufactured long range unmanned bomber. iranian officials say it can carry up to four cruise missiles with a range of 625 miles and fly long distances at a high speed. president mahmoud ahmadinejad said the country's military self-sufficiency program will continue, quote, until the enemies of humanity lose hope of attacking the iranian nation. 33 miners trapped deep underground for 17 days in chile have been found alive.

language of plants. she's a backyard gardener, sort of. this isn't her backyard. the 28 by 7-foot plot of dirt belongs to the pleasant hill recreation parks district and is part of a community garden. folks rent the space for 75 bucks a year and grow mostly veggies. >> they are more edible than flowers. >> reporter: people garden for different reasons. the price of food, relaxation, the community garden started decades ago but the demand for space reached full bloom more recently. a lot of the gardeners are new bees. >> we had a huge boom. the weight list was huge. it hadn't been like that before. i would have like 5, 6, 7 people on a wait list. last year 30 people. >> reporter: she said the annual rental fee for 25 plots barely covers the water bill. the garden pays for itself. it's a staple of the park, just like sports. >> people find softballs in

seven of the 43 cameras were working when thieves made off with the famous painting yesterday. egyptian officials say they are instructing security forces to take extra precautions to make sure it does not leave the country. this is the second time the painting has been stolen from the same museum. this is the art and soul festival in oakland. it highlights musical talent from those who call or have called oakland home. m.c. hammer, two of the featured performers today. this shows the good things that oakland has to offer including good weather. it will get hot. lawrence is promising a heat wave. >> we are not used to it. be careful exercising outside, not used to the hot temperatures. we will crank up the numbers around the bay area something like we haven't done in quite some time. hot temperatures heading our way. getting a taste of things to
