your seven-day forecast in just a few moments. back to you. >> thank you. they expected to be landing in australia today but instead, more than 200 travelers are waking up in the bay area this morning. let's go to anne makovec at sfo with the reason that those travelers' flight returned overnight. anne, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. apparently the engine blew midflight. imagine settling in for your international flight hearing a loud boom, vibration and being told you're turning around. take a look at the pictures sent to us by a cbs 5 viewer of what appears to be the engine compartment of the qantas flight with a big hole in it, damage that apparently occurred midflight. the plane left sfo for australia about 11:00 last night and 20 minutes in passengers described a loud boom, the plane shaking and veering to the side. one man said there appeared to be flames coming from the

engine compartment. the pilot got on the loudspeaker and told everybody there was serious damage to the plane, but he was planning to land safely. he flew around to get rid of fuel and landed at sfo at 12:45 this morning, an hour and 40 minutes after it took offer. here's how some passengers described their experience. >> this is just a real uncomfortable vibration really at first. and then the plane started to shake a little bit. and yeah, just an uncomfortable vibration and bit of a push and you could feel something was wrong. >> the captain, thankfully, made a very good landing, all cheered and everybody was a lot happier at the end and yeah, very relieved to be on the ground. >> reporter: 212 passengers on board flight 74, that's a 747 jet. apparently they all cheered when they hit the ground. they were all booked in hotels until qantas could get them on another plane back home.

no mention of this incident, though, this morning on either the qantas or the sfo website. john and sydnie? >> all right. thank you very much, anne makovec at sfo. this morning investigators looking into whether two men arrested in the netherlands were conducting a dry run for a potential terror attack. those two men were arrested yesterdayed in the netherlands after flying from chicago to amsterdam on a united flight. their luggage was kept in chicago after security workers fond a knife, box cutter and cell phone taped to a pepto bismol bottle. the two men are american citizens of yemeni descent. they were not on a u.s. terror watch list. the suspect in some recent crimes in oakland is off the streets this morning. phillip grimes, known as jr, is accused of at least 7 separate shootings in oakland in the last 10 days. he was found at an apartment on 10th avenue and east 24th

street last night. officers were approaching the apartment. someone was throwing weapons out a second-story window. and a number of handguns and assault weapons were found in the apartment. grimes and two other men were arrested. the fremont police officer shot while on duty last friday has been upgraded from critical to serious condition. officer todd young lost at least 40% of his blood when he was shot last friday while serving a warrant in oakland. the suspect carjacked at least two cars heading south. he was arrested saturday within sight of the mexico border after detectives intercepted a cell phone call he had made in san diego. the suspect apparently talking. >> during the interview he gave admissions to committing the crimes on friday. >> are you saying he confessed? >> we're not going to say exactly what he said during the interviews because they are still going to be going to court but he did give admissions. >> 20-year-old andrew barrientos will be returned to alameda county from san diego this week it face charges.

he and two other suspects arrested are from the decoto neighborhood in union city. today marks the official end of american combat operations in iraq. vice president joe biden is in baghdad to preside over today's ceremonies. he is also pushing iraqi leaders to end a stalemate that prevented them from forming a new government. this morning, president obama flies to fort bliss, texas, to meet with soldiers who served in iraq. then he will return to washington to speak to the nation. >> what you will see is the changing of a mission from one of combat to one of support. >> the new mission is called operation new dawn. about 50,000 american forces will focus on stablizing the country, which includes training and advising iraqi security forces. those troops are expected to remain in iraq until the end of next year. president obama's speech to the nation will start at 5:00 our time. we will have live coverage here

good morning. getting busy now on westbound 580 as you approach the dublin interchange but stacking up at the altamont pass where kcbs sky 1 is over a stalled tractor- trailer. we'll have that and more coming up. >> see you in a couple of minutes and we have your weather as well. the amount of raw sewage that spilled into redwood shores lagoon last week is nearly 10 times greater than the original estimate. redwood city officials now say the pipe that ruptured spewed 48,000 gallons of sewage last wednesday. the initial estimate of 5,000 gallons was made by workers who had to make a notification within two hours. much of the sewage flowed into the redwood shores lagoon. that clean-up is continuing and officials are exploring ways to treat sewage in a way that does not harm the environment.

the state senate and assembly voting on competing budget plans today nearly two months into the new fiscal year. both republicans and democrats have submitted proposals, but there is no sign either will pass. democrats have a majority in both houses, but they don't have the two-thirds needed to pass the budget. they differ on roughly $4 billion in budget solutions. republicans say they will not support any plan that calls for any kind of tax increases. >> it's not right to ask the people of california to pay more tax dollars when we have so much inefficiency, fraud and waste within the system. >> state senate president pro tem darrell steinberg says the state has already reduced general funds spending by $20 billion over the past two years. democrats say the republican plan would kill the welfare to work program and cripple child care services and an in home care program for seniors and the disabled. this is the final day of the legislature's regular session.

good morning. we start off with a bridge check. a stall on the san mateo bridge. westbound 92 in the flat section of the bridge, got a stalled airport commuter van so unfortunately some people are going to be late to their flights. not seeing any big delays as far as other traffic on westbound 92 but we are continuing to watch it because it is blocking one lane. so bridge tow crews are heading out there now. in the meantime no delays at the bay bridge toll plaza. no metering lights. and the golden gate bridge relatively problem-free. but we are getting reports of some dense fog as you commute through the waldo grade. so watch out for that.

phillip grimes arrested on tenth avenue in oakland. he is accused of seven shootings in ten days. several weapons were found in the apartment. and today some parents in oakland plan to occupy a child care center that is slated for closure because of budget cuts. it's one of seven originally set to close. now five centers having spared but parents want all seven to remain open. there is a german sports reporter doing okay now after a mishap at a soccer match. jessica castro was covering the match when she was beaned by a soccer ball. let's see that again. she says no one warned her it was coming. >> i was shocked in that moment, kind of really shocked. i had no idea what happened. but i just saw the technical director of stuttgart that was standing beside me and he was like totally shocked and i saw his face and i thought, oh, my

will sort through your messages all of your messages and based on your previous usage, say you reply to a certain person more often than other e-mails, those messages will go into your important inbox the e-mails you want to read right away. everything else will go into a folder called everything else. google claims this morning that it will save the average user about a week's worth of time sorting through reading and deleting unwanted e-mails something we can all relate to. now, we talked to kcbs technology analyst larry magid about this and said they are rolling it out to lure people away from other email services like yahoo and microsoft outlook. >> so i think google is having to deal with this as a marketing tool. if it can claim that people are going to be more efficient using gmail than using outlook or any other service, that's

plenty of clouds to start the day. warmer temperatures all over the place. this is what you can expect. cloudy, foggy, drizzle at the coast. temperatures in the 50s. in the afternoon, sunshine and warmer temperatures. 70s and 80s inland. sunny and mild at the bay with the mid-70s. mid-60s at the coast, sunshine. today is part one of the warming trend. yesterday for example we hit 74 in livermore, 74 san jose, 72 san rafael, 63 in san francisco. today temperatures warming up to the mid-80s in livermore. that's 12 degrees warmer. 7 degrees warmer in san jose. 6 in san rafael and four in san francisco. today part one will warm up even more wednesday and thursday looks like it's going to be the hottest day of the week.

seven-day forecast, today stage one. stage 2 is wednesday. stage 3 is thursday and boy, it's going to get hot. triple-digit highs expected thursday inland. friday we start to cool down taking them into the weekend forecast saturday, sunday and monday. so looks like a nice holiday weekend approaching. that's a look at your weather. back up to you. >> thank you. 6:46. springtime that brought higher home prices to american cities. government tax credits helped. let's go to jason brooks with kcbs and cbsmoneywatch.com. jason, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. certainly prices did get a bit of a boost from the home buyer tax credits that expired back

in april. the surge in selling through the spring, prices were brought up. the price index shows the top 20 market there was a 1% gain in june from may. 4% a little over 4% from the year before. but not all good news baked in there. we looked at the bay area and actually it showed a slowing growth, only .3% from may to june compared to 1.7% the month before. although it did have the biges increase year-over-year of any of the cities at over 14%. the problem is we saw home sales in july absolutely plummet. that will likely pressure prices further down. we are not getting any indication right now that home sales are picking up for the month of august or currently heading into september. markets not too enthused about that. a lot of other economic information coming down the pike today. a couple of key manufacturing indices, also consumer confidence, which continues to be a big worry for wall street. stock market is down, starting out in a hole because of that.

right now the dow lower by 26 at the 9982. below 10, 000. nasdaq off by 12. and the s&p down by 4 points. google continues its forray into social gaming. social deck makes a number of games for various mobile devices including iphones and blackberries. google has been on a splurge this past month, the third acquisition. bought a couple of other companies and invested up to $200 million in zing a local company that makes farmville and mafia wars. all told about half billion dollars as google tries to become a bigger player in social gaming. john and sydnie? >> jason, thank you very much. jason brooks with kcbs and cbsmoneywatch.com. this school year some san jose students won't spend anytime in the classroom. >> they are the first public school students in the bay area to take classes online. that program aimed at independent learners who typically don't do as well in the classroom. that leads us to our question

this morning after an engine explodes in midair. >> anne makovec is at sfo to show us the damage and tell us where the passengers are now. hi, anne. >> reporter: good morning. the good news is that everybody is safe. now, i just spoke with a mechanic here at sfo. he didn't want to be identified. but he says that this appeared to be a case of engine fatigue from this qantas flight that caused the engine to blow up midair over the pacific. let's take a look at some pictures given to us by a cbs 5 viewer of what appears to be the engine compartment of the qantas flight with a big hole in it, damage that occurred after the plane left sfo for australia a little after 11:00. 20 minutes in, there was a boom, the plane shook and veered to the side. one man said there were flames coming from the compartment. the pilot said there was serious engine damage. he turned around, flew around to get rid of fuel and landed at sfo at 12:45 this morning. an hour and 40 minutes after it

took off. now, there were over 200 passengers on board that flight. qantas booked them into hotel rooms until they can find another plane and get them on their way to australia. the mechanic says with what from what he understands they are going to keep the plane at sfo for a week and replace the engine but he also says that was one of four engines and that a plane can fly with only two engines so they didn't appear to be in imminent danger but a scary situation. >> thank you, anne makovec at sfo. two men arrested in amsterdam may have been conducting a dry run for a potential terrorist attack. they were arrested after u.s. authorities found a cell phone taped to a pepto bismol bottle and knife and box cutter in their luggage. the white house says they were not on any u.s. terror watch list. all right.

let's go to the nimitz freeway freeway. live look at 880 oakland. everything is gone now off to the right shoulder on 880 so no delay north- or southbound 880. the marin county commute looks great. a lot of fog. it continues to -- is shroud the word? >> yes. >> cover our traffic shot. >> cover the golden gate bridge traffic shot. expect low visibility especially through the waldo grade and stall on the upper deck of the bay bridge just past treasure island. [ laughter ] >> i know. >> the spider made its home on our bay bridge toll plaza camera. so yeah, a stall there. they are going to cycle through the metering lights slowly and we are seeing backups now beyond the west grand overcrossing. >> freaks out my traffic producer. she can't even look at that shot. they will come and go.
