61 in san francisco. 70s in santa rose and napa. the seven-day forecast is coming up. back to you. >> thank you. inspect your pipelines. that's what the state is telling pacific gas and electric after last week's deadly explosion and fires on the peninsula. anne makovec is in san bruno this morning, where federal officials are still trying to find the cause of the blast, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. they are going to be trying to find the cause for months before it's actually confirmed. but they say that they will let us know as soon as new information comes in on exactly what caused this pipeline explosion. here in san bruno, the investigation continues this morning. the ntsb has been collecting evidence from around the blast site, pieces of the pipeline exploded on thursday leaving this crater in the ground in the middle of a neighborhood. the

ruptured line was in a high concentration area so it should have more inspections. pg&e says the line was slated to be replaced according to documents. now piece of it have become evidence instead of being simply retired, including a 28- foot section ripped out of the ground and tossed 100 feet into the air by the blast. it's being shipped to washington, d.c. as part of the investigation. did anybody smell gas before the blast? we have gotten several reports that people did smell gas and reported it to pg&e. but pg&e denies it. >> we are not able to find instances of people who reported an odor and we would ask anybody who says that they reported smelling gas to contact us through whatever means. >> reporter: what do you say when pg&e says we never

received any calls about gas? >> that's a lie, because you can smell and then if the guy was walking around there. >> reporter: the ntsb is asking anyone who might have smelled gas to please contact them as soon as possible. they have a special email address, one word, sanbrunoatntsb.com. we have that on our website, cbs5.com. we are trying to figure out whether the cause of the blast was a well failure impact construction or metal fatigue and they are going to have to figure it out. another press conference by jackie speier congresswoman, with all the

agencies. they are going to inrespect all the pipelines in the state and that's going to be a tall order. >> thank you, anne makovec in san bruno. this is the crater that was left behind after the blast. investigators say it measures 167 feet by 26 feet. but they don't yet know how deep it is because it's too unstable for anyone to climb down into it. six people have been reported missing after the blast. yesterday, san bruno officials said two of those reported missing have been found alive. that leaves four people still unaccounted for. the coroner confirms four fatalities, that's actually down from the seven the city said were there on saturday. among the victims, jacquelin grieg and her daughter. the coroner is still working to identify the fourth victim. >> as far as the remains that have been located, we are in the process of doing forensic tests. >> the coroner says while more remains were found, it's not

clear if they are from victims already accounted for. they could belong to animals. three parishioners of a san bruno church are among the missing. they are 50-year-old greg and son and mother. a family member not home at the time says she believes the three were inside the house at the time of the explosion. as for those hospitalized, four victims are still at saint francis memorial hospital in san francisco. three are in critical condition with life-threatening burns over 50% of their bodies. one is in serious but stable condition. san francisco general is also treating four patients for burns and smoke inhalation. two are critical. one is serious, the other in fair condition. there is a little bit of good news to tell you about. many of those who had to evacuate have been allowed back home. some temporarily, though. others get to stay. a total of 377 homes in the fire area were evacuated.

those who live in 294 of those homes were allowed back to stay. in nine homes, people had to gather their belongings and leave again. among them was jerry hiller. he stood on his front lawn thursday evening and took photos of the flames. once the gas was turned off he felt it was finally safe to go back inside. >> so i went to bed. i didn't sleep that good. but i went to bed. and then i get up in the morning, and i find out i'm sitting in a crime scene. >> hiller was forced to evacuate the next day. as for the other 83 houses, those are closer to the main burn site and they are either destroyed or considered too damaged for people to enter at this point. those people expect to find out today when they will be able to see what's left. a meeting for them is scheduled for 10:00 this morning at the san bruno senior center that's on crystal springs road. and as anne mentioned, congresswoman jackie speier represents the fire area and plans to hold a briefing

tonight to update residents on the investigation. that is scheduled from 8 to 9:30 at the church of the highlands in san bruno. want to let you know that schools in the area are schedule to be opened today, all eight. all were closed friday because of the fire but all will resume classes today. the same for parkside intermediate school. time now 5:07. let's get another check of traffic and weather. gianna? >> 20- to 30-minute delays on bart heading in eastbound. so give yourself extra time. other than that ace, muni and caltrain no problems. bay bridge toll plaza, no delays to report. in fact, the metering lights ar off. striping finished on the 680 express lanes. double solid white lines and two exit entry points

saint cecilia catholic church remembered a teenager and her mother. 13-year-old janessa grieg and her mother lived in the fire area and were among those killed in the disaster. >> we have been parishioners here for 15 years and it's been a very tough time for the community and the children in the class. >> saint robert's church in san bruno not far from the disaster site was among many churches collecting donations for survivors whose homes were damaged or destroyed. most of the pets brought to the peninsula humane society in the wake of that pipeline explosion have been reunited with their families. about two dozen were brought in immediately after the disaster. many though are still missing, mostly outdoor cats. the humane society says it is a good time to make sure their pets always wear a collar with a tag or have a chip. we continue to follow the

if you plan to take bart on the peninsula, expect delays because of an equipment problem causing 30-minute delays on the eastbound direction for trains so heads up if you are going to use the freeway clear on 280 right now no delays to report. northbound 101, oyster point between there and candlestick, we have various lanes closed for construction. drive through the east bay no troubles at the bay bridge. the metering lights are off. everything clear at the toll plaza. 880 looking mighty fine through oakland, traffic cruising along near the coliseum and 680 you might notice some differences this morning. the first stretch of striping

friday, saturday, sunday. pg&e is under orders to check all its natural gas lines in california. the state public utilities commission is also planning to appoint an independent panel to investigate last week's pipeline explosion in san bruno. people whose homes were damaged or destroyed should find out today when they will be allowed to see what's left. yesterday police escorted people to nearly 300 other homes in the area. most were allowed to stay in their homes. others were able to check things out, gather belongings and leave. sure shourd could be set free from an iranian prison as soon as today. sarah shourd's lawyer is waiting for word that bail of half million dollars has been paid. iran's judiciary said yesterday the 32-year-old can be released because she has health problems. 5:20. palo alto-based hewlett-packard may be close to buying another

silicon valley company. the "san jose mercury news" says hp has been negotiating with ark site a small internet software company from cupertino. the price tag about $1.5 billion. hp has announced several acquisitions in recent months including that highly publicized fight for fremont's three par. hertz is topping an offer from avis for thrifty. it seemed to catch people by surprise. a building surrounded by onlookers suddenly collapses. that had been declared unsafe collapsed on sunday.

peninsula is heading to washington. our anne makovec is in san bruno where a federal agency is handling the disaster investigation. good morning, anne. >> reporter: good morning. a big part of the investigation is focused in the san bruno neighborhood but now the ntsb is continuing its investigation as puc, the public utilities commission -- [ inaudible ] [ no audio ] >> all right. it seems like we're having some technical problem's with the live shot. back to you. >> and we continue with this story. six people have been record missing after the blast but yesterday san bruno officials said two of those reported missing had been found alive which leaves four people still unaccounted for. the coroner confirms four fatalities. that's down from the seven the city said there were on saturday. among the victims, jacqueline grieg and her 13-year-old

two of them in critical condition. one serious, the other in fair condition. i'm told we have anne makovec back now live in san bruno. anne what can you tell us? >> reporter: as i was saying, pg&e is obviously focusing a lot of its work here in the san bruno neighborhood where the explosion happened. but a state public utility commission is now ordering them to check thousands of miles of pipeline across the state to make sure other neighborhoods don't end up in this same situation. the piece of pipeline, the piece that you see right there is now on its way to washington, d.c. a 28-foot section called prime evidence in the gas line explosion investigation. it was ripped out of the ground and tossed 100 feet through the air by thursday's blast. investigators are now trying to figure out whether the explosion was caused by a weld failure, impact from construction, or metal fatigue. the ntsb is digging to find out. >> there are lots of reasons why this pipe could have failed

and getting into the crater will help us gather information to make that determination. >> reporter: now, the california public utilities commission did order pg&e to inspect its natural gas system as a whole with the priority on high pressure transmission lines in densely populated areas like the one that exploded here in san bruno. additionally, the cpuc ordered the utility to preserve all records done by pg&e or its contractors and whether money authorized for pipeline safety was actually spent on pipeline safety. it's all part of the investigation that's expected to take a year or more, though the puc wants to assure everybody that the ntsb is going to be letting us know the information that they find as soon as they find it. they are trying to figure out if anybody did smell gas in the days or weeks before this

the express lanes are not in effect. no tolls will be taken, not to be used for solo drivers. that will start next monday. eight-mile stretch now done there are new double solid white lines and two exit and on and entry points. the express lanes are not in effect until next monday. bart delays, as well. 20- to 30-minute delays at sfo in millbrae in the eastbound direction for trains. use the freeway if you can or expect to give yourself extra time. on the eastshore freeway no troubles reported on the westbound side. clear on the carquinez bridge. no accidents on the eastshore freeway towards the bay bridge. traffic moving quite well through there. and you are clear this morning on the golden gate bridge. no troubles to report. hopefully no troubles in your forecast. here's tracy. >> so far, so good, no troubles in the forecast. here's a look at what you can expect today. temperatures trending slightly cooler than average.

alcohol was likely a factor in a wrong-way crash on the peninsula that killed two people. officers say 39-year-old stacey white of san mateo was driving the wrong way on the freeway around 3:00 a.m. she stopped in the middle of a lane. a good samaritan stopped to help. they were both hit and killed by an oncoming vehicle. the incident shut down all but one lane of southbound highway 101 in san mateo for hours creating a traffic jam all day yesterday. >> this collision scene was 3,000 feet long so there was a lot of evidence, debris and things we had to do so the lanes were closed for approximately 12 hours. >> officers advised drivers to never get out of their car on the freeway. if there is an emergency, you want to wait for the chp inside the car with your seatbelt on. it took dental records to confirm the identity of a body found in an east bay home. the contra costa county coroner confirms that those remains found in a closet in a hercules

home were those of 35-year-old frederick sales. he is the son of 73-year-old murder victim ricardo sales, whose body was found in the same home last month. crews spent several days searching for frederick sales at a landfill in pittsburg. murder suspect efren valdemoro was shot and killed by police august 31. two people shot over the weekend at an event held at the cow palace. officers responded to a shooting early yesterday in the southall of the indoor arena. a private party was being held there by members of the bay area desperados motorcycle club. two victims were taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds. one suffering life-threatening injuries. berkeley police are asking for help in solving a weekend murder that happened about 3:40:00 a.m. yesterday at adeline and emerson streets. two men tried to rob a 35-year- old man and his fiancee walking in the area. one of the suspects shot the man and punched the woman. the man was killed and his

and good morning from the traffic center. we start off with delays for bart. looks like we'll get that bart map up. there you go. 20 to 30 minutes at sfo millbrae due to an equipment problem for trains eastbound. if you plan to use the freeway instead, probably your best bet at this point right now. the freeway actually looking good. you can see 101 no delays to report north- and southbound through the peninsula. 280 some slight delays southbound just out of san bruno bus traffic moving nice

through the area. 280 through san jose, no troubles. traffic is pretty light on northbound 280. metering lights are off on the bay bridge, light, no troubles on the upper or lower decks. you're clear at the toll plaza. and if you're working your way through oakland this morning, both directions of 880 checking in problem-free. traffic moving at nice speeds near the coliseum. up next, we'll get you updated on the striping project for the express lanes on 680 but right now here's tracy with a look at your forecast. >> thanks, gianna. our forecast for the morning, partly cloudy inland, mostly cloudy conditions around the bay and cloudy with areas of fog for the coastline. temperatures for the morning ranging from the lower to the mid to the upper 50s. we are going to warm up later on today, lower 80s in the warmest spots inland. that's almost 10 degrees cooler than average. 60s and 70s around the bay with a mix of sun and clouds. and for coastal locations today, essentially in the upper

50s. low clouds remain, cool temperatures sticking around. let's take a look. 60 in pacifica and half moon bay. inland just a bit, temperatures in the lower 70s from palo alto, mountain view, sunnyvale, cupertino 74. 75 los gatos. out to morgan hill at 76 degrees. well into the east bay, the 80s. 80 in pittsburg, lower 80s in antioch and in brentwood. 79 degrees in livermore. upper 70s in danville and san ramon. and the closer you get to the bay, temperatures start to back off a bit. mid-70s in oakland, 56 degrees in alameda. 68 in hayward, 65 in alameda. temperatures a lot like yesterday, one or two degrees shy. the only difference, these temperatures are still cooler than average. mid-70s in napa and sonoma. lower 70s in petaluma, upper 60s in novato and san rafael and the lower 60s in sausalito, san francisco, can't forget mill valley with 68 for the afternoon. seven-day forecast, cooler than

average today and tomorrow. heck, we're cooler than average all week. wednesday and thursday temperatures will go up a bit. but they don't stick around for long. that mini warmup is what i'm calling it. temperatures fall back down friday, saturday and sunday. that's a look at your weather. back up to you. >> thank you. let's take a check of today's top stories. a section of the pipeline that exploded in san bruno last week is heading to washington. it will be inspected at the national transportation safety board's lab. meanwhile, the california public utilities commission has ordered pg&e to inspect all its gas lines in the state. sarah shourd could be set free from an iranian prison as soon as today. her lawyer in tehran says he is waiting for word that bail of a half million dollars has been paid. iran's judiciary said yesterday the 32-year-old shourd can be released on health grounds if that bail is paid. and this morning drivers will see you in striping painted along a short section of 680. the express lane on southbound interstate 680 is set to open a

week from today. it stretches from sunol to mill piece. the lane will be free for carpools and solo drivers will be able to use it for a price. more evidence disputes a link between vaccines and autism. researchers studying 1,000 children found they had no greater exposure to a mercury preservative used in some vaccines than nonautistic kids. earlier this year, a british medical journal rescinded an article that suggested a link between it and autism. taking vitamins may not help colon cancer patients. the vitamins did not lower the chances of colorectal cancer deaths in a study. among survivors, the vitamins failed to lower the likelihood of the cancer returning. despite those findings, researchers say certain vitamins may still be helpful
