on what holiday travelers there can expect. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. yes. it's that time of year, time for holiday travel so we are going to check in here at sfo with mike mccarron but first of all what's going on today in terms of cancellations and delays? what do you have? >> well, right now there are two flights cancelled to london, virgin atlantic and british airways cancelled flights because of snow in london. united airways plans to operate to london but everything else is on time. but the weather is very changeable so things could change throughout the day. >> reporter: okay. so so far, no domestic delays. that you know of right now? >> right now. we would not expect any delays until after 9 a.m. but the weather changes so that could happen at any time. >> reporter: what are we looking at this holiday travel season in terms of numbers? there are a lot of people in line and it's still early. >> today about 125,000 people in and out that much every day until christmas eve when we'll see a drop-off. we expect a 4% increase over

last year and should be fine as long as the weather helps out. >> reporter: how are the lines at the security check points? >> off-peak between five and seven minutes. peak times up to 11 minutes going through security. so hopefully no troubles. >> reporter: then you recommend 90 minutes for domestic and two hours for international. >> yes. >> reporter: that's the latest. couple of international cancellation, nothing domestic. get here 90 minutes ahead of time and check with your carrier. >> thank you, sharon chin. in san mateo county -- if san mateo county wants to build a new jail in redwood city, the board of supervisors may have to take action soon. the "san francisco examiner" says the cost of four properties off chemical way would cost $17.4 million but further delays could add an estimated half million dollars to that cost. the county is trying to address

jail overcrowding issues. the new facility would be a correctional center with a focus on inmate rehabilitation. supervisors plan to hold a special meeting tomorrow. federal official investigating the deadly san bruno pipeline explosion may subpoena witnesses for a public hearing in washington early next year. a member of the national transportation safety board made that announcement at a community meeting in san bruno yesterday. he said the board is well aware of the intense interest in the disaster and the safety issues that it raised. that community meeting was hosted by congresswoman jackie speier and the city council. along with theresidents want more information from public agencies and some complain that pg&e wasn't responsive. >> the pg&e guys say last month they said we could talk to them anytime. now it's been two weeks.

what's going on? let's be honest. don't tell me one thing and say another thing. it's like this over and over again. >> we would like some more answers from the ntsb and the cpuc as to, of course, what happened on the pipelines. >> the "san francisco chronicle" reports that an audit of the pg&e pipelines performed four months before the september explosion suggest that utility took shortcuts during its inspections of the high pressure natural gas lines. so far the series of winter storms hasn't been as treacherous as earlier feared because it's causing lots of problems though in the bay area. take a look at some of the minor flooding yesterday near the highway 1 exit from u.s. 101 in marin county. floodwaters in redwood city cut off access to a mobile home park. they had to wait for fire department to clear the water. a storm crashed in el cerrito street. it brought down power lines and

slammed into a home. no one was injured. a similar problem in marin county where a tree branch came down on power lines in san geronimo. crews cut the branches and cleared the wood from the road. so how much more rain will we see and what is going to be hang on saturday, christmas day? tracy has your forecast. >> good morning. showers in the forecast for this morning. some of them coming down heavy at times. that's mainly in the north bay. south bay some light rainfall extending down from ben lomond to san jose and milpitas. dry in most of the east bay but the north bay a line of heavier showers moving into santa rosa and napa. forecast for today will include some showers and thunderstorms for this morning. showers and thunderstorms also in the forecast for this afternoon. highs today in the 50s. christmas also it be wet or dry? hm. we'll take a look at your christmas forecast in just a few moments. for your traffic, here's

be snow, but it ended up being hail. as for the roads they are an absolute mess as you might imagine after that big storm that rolled through yesterday. more on the way, as well. we are driving up past gold run. that is where we noticed the streets getting wet and certainly closer to blue canyon that's where we willly noticed the temperature dropping -- really noticed the temperature dropping and that's where the snow and ice is built up on the roads, it's treacherous. bring the chains if you are lucky enough to have a ski vacation up here and caltrans plows having out, as well. if we can pan off and show you 80 real quickly, it's more clear than it was an hour ago for sure. but still, sydnie and juliette, it is a met so drivers will have to take it slow and be prepared to take their time getting up here this morning. >> the roads are open. they can get up there if they have chains or four-wheel drive? >> reporter: just bring chains, yup. >> how much snow have they gotten, nick? >> reporter: some of the ski resorts property up to 5 to 6

feet. that's why some shut down. you had so much snow and the winds speeds were up to 70 miles an hour. so one of the presorts you had a tree that was blown in a ski lift and some people were injured there. so that prompted resorts to close but it sounds like they will be able to re-open this morning. >> good deal. go get in that truck and get toasty warm before your next live shot. >> reporter: absolutely. >> we know the drill. >> thank, nick janes. >> syd and i spent many a time up there doing live shots. >> exactly. >> tracy humphrey has the forecast. >> thanks. i'm going to piggyback off nick janes and we are degree to talk about the sierra forecast. winter storm warning in effect until 4:00 this evening in addition to 2 to 4 inches at the lake level and more at higher elevations and snow showers in the forecast tuesday and wednesday. our forecast, hi-def doppler showing we still have some showers out there and they have mainly been in the north bay. but there are some parts of the south bay looking at some light

showers moving into the san jose area. but the closer you get to the north bay that's where you see again we are looking at a line of moderate to heavy rainfall moving into the santa rosa area. and also moving into parts of fairfield. forecast for the morning, showers and thunderstorms are possible this morning. showers and thunderstorms will remain in the forecast this afternoon. nick did mention some hail up there in the sierra. we have had some reports of some lightning strikes in parts of the north bay this morning. namely napa, so keep that in mind. here's a look at what are we dealing with. big low pressure system still up there and it is just spinning and churning and pushing several different storm systems into the bay area. that will be the drill again for today and tomorrow. and also as we move into wednesday. not out of the woods just yet. today how much rainfall is expected? up to a half inch in the north bay, the east basis, the south bay and the peninsula and east bay, up to an inch in the santa cruz mountains. got plans? look at that. showers expected tomorrow. more widespread rainfall likely

that's 2 million nationwide. so far, out of san francisco international airport, bad weather has forced the cancellation of a virgin atlantic and british airways flight to europe but united will still fly to london. no domestic cancellations or major delays yet. airport spokesman mike mccarron offers tips for those traveling during this busy three-week holiday season. he says don't wrap packages be ready at the security check points where the peak morning period is between 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. about 8 to 10 minutes wait at the height. at the nonpeak hours about 5 to 7 minute wait. they advise that you arrive 90 minutes before departure and make sure you check with your carrier before you even leave your house. that's the latest for you. sydnie? >> just remember, don't wrap those packages. there's always someone who forgets and wraps them and then they have to be unwrapped by

security. don't want that disappointment. thank you, sharon chin. time now turning to 6:32. so far, the series of winter storms has not been as treacherous as earlier feared. but it is causing its share of problems in the bay area. some examples, minor flooding yesterday in a low-lying area near the highway 1 exit from u.s. 101 in marin county. in redwood city, floodwaters at a mobile home park cut off access for residents. they had to wait for fire department pumps to clear the water and people in many parts of the bay area stocked up on sandbags. >> power is back on just about everywhere in the bay area for pg&e customers. utility says less than 300 local homes and businesses are still without electricity this morning. and that's much less than yesterday when that number was in the thousands. the biggest single outage was yesterday morning in the oakland area affecting more than 17,000 customers. and we could see more outages later this week because

we have more storms in the forecast. let go to tracy with another look at where those storms are headed now. >> thank you, sydnie as well as juliette. we have some showers out there this morning, some of them holding thunderstorms. that's the drill for this morning especially in the napa area and that's what we are currently still seeing, rainfall moving into napa and heavier showers moving into santa rosa and also towards san rafael. forecast includes plenty of rainfall. we picked up quite a bit since thursday. more than 1.5" in santa rosa. 2.75" in san rafael, more than 2" i san francisco. oakland 2.9." san jose .94." nap, concord, livermore, quite a bit there, as well. forecast for this morning will include showers as well as thunderstorms. we are going to keep the chance of showers and thunderstorms in the forecast through the afternoon. that's a look at your weather.

back to you. >> thank you. we'll talk to gianna about the commute in a few minutes. 6:34. the man on trial for the murder of a woman on russian hill was upset about child support before that killing. 43-year-old gary scott holland reportedly called his mother and his ex-wife just hours before the murder to complain about paying child support for his two children. holland is accused of dressing up as a utility worker before raping and stabbing 46-year-old kate horan in her apartment. he has pleaded not guilty to the charges. this morning, a deadly fire in novato sunday investigation. fire crews finding the woman's body yesterday after the flames were extinguished. two neighboring homes were threatened and had to be evacuated. no word on what sparked the fire. 6:34 now. new this morning the victims. san bruno disaster are facing new obstacle, federal income taxes. congresswoman jackie speier is working to make sure the money they received in disaster aid

will not be taxed. pg&e has given $15,000 to victims whose homes were damaged in september when the natural gas pipeline blew. residents were notified last month that the money could be taxed by the irs. and concerned residents turned out at a community meeting last night. official from the ntsb and pg&e fielded questions. the ntsb officials say there may be a hearing in washington early next year when witnesses will be subpoenaed. residents had been complaining about a lack of information. 6:35. let's go to gianna franco with a look at our morning commute. and it looks a bit quieter after seeing all those people at the airport i think a lot people of were taking this week off. >> you got that right. they just turned the metering lights on at the bay bridge which is a little later than usual. lots of folks take the day off for the holiday coming up this weekend so you can see traffic is light approaching the toll plaza. an easy 20 minutes from the carquinez bridge to the maze. elsewhere if you are

approaching the bay bridge on 80 you can see traffic still very light on the eastshore freeway commute and no delays to report on 880 northbound or southbound. in fact, here's a live look at 880 right near the coliseum. traffic is nice all the way southbound 880 in towards hayward. south 880 connector, vehicle spun out. more on that in the next report. back to you guys. >> thank you. plans for a new antioch bart station drawing criticism for the city leaders. the design for hillcrest doesn't have restroom, escalator. this station is part of a $462 million extension called ebart. bart officials say they will consider making changes but they may not be able to afford it right away.

some stanford doctors have been getting a little too close with >> a major ethical concern in medicine. now an investigation revealed that some stanford doctors have been getting too close to drug companies. matt bigler joins from us the kcbs radio silicon valley bureau with more. >> reporter: good morning. we are talking about a report from pro publica, a nonprofit investigative journalism organization. it found more than a dozen doctors at stanford medical school have been paid by big pharma drug companies over the past year to give promotional drug speeches. and that's in violation of stanford's own policy. last year, stanford became one of the first medical schools to pass a blanket ban on doctors giving promotional drug speeches and yet this report finds that more than a dozen doctors have already violated that policy. stanford is calling this activity unacceptable. we talked to dr. arthur kaplan

at the university of pennsylvania's center for bioethics. he says it's clear the university hasn't taken steps to make sure that doctors are following the policy. >> so if this feels in terms of the honor -- if this fails in terms of the honor system of reporting they will get tough and say if we find you earned drug money that's going to mean dismissal. >> stanford is it not alone on this. the report by pro publica finds that a half dozen other medical schools also have doctors that have been paid by drug companies to give promotional drug speeches. obviously those schools are not happy and they have launched reviews to follow up on this investigation. i'm matt bigler, live for cbs 5. >> thank you. well, good morning. monday morning and we still have rain showers in the bay area. here's a look at a line of showers. some of them coming down heavy

on the agenda as the lame duck congress finishes its work. congress needs to approve a spending measure to keep the government running through march and passage of a new start treaty with russia to reduce nuclear weapons is still possible. >> the military supports this treaty. the leader of the strategic command current and the past former seven support this treaty. the national intelligence community supports this treaty. >> minority leader mitch mcconnell says he will vote against the treaty that president obama signed with the president of russia back in april. and this week, president obama is expected to sign into law legislation allowing gays to serve openly in the military. but there is uncertainty about when the new policy will go into effect and whether troops will accept it. the president and his top military advisors must first certify that repealing "don't ask, don't tell" will not damage the troops' ability to fight. and after that, there will be a

for christmas. after tomorrow, it's priority or it is express mail. all right. on to the sierra. it's still seeing a blast of winter snow. drivers are forced to travel on icy roads and in fact this morning, chains are required on parts of interstate 80 and highway 50. ski resorts in the sierra closed over the weekend and they are expected to open around 9 a.m. >> but it's going to be glorious if they have some great ski conditions up there because of all that new snow. right, tracy? but snow for them means rain for us? >> yeah. that's typically how to happens. rainfall across the bay area means snowfall across the sierra and they are still looking at a winter storm warning in effect until 4 p.m. this afternoon. light rainfall down in san jose and fremont and heavier showers moving in through santa rosa also napa and sonoma. forecast for today, what can you expect? showers as well as thunderstorms in the forecast today. showers also tuesday and
