the weekend but as frank mentioned, there is baggage involved. suhr was involved in the fajitagate scandal from 2003 and charged with conspiracy to obstruct justice. he was later cleared of those charges. in 2005 he was demoted from head of patrol after the controversial g8 protests when an officer was seriously injured. he was demoted in 2009 after applications he failed to report a domestic violence violence attack on a friend. despise this, very popular guy among the ranks and ultimately the mayor, as well. ed lee told the "chronicle," "greg suhr's history is an open book. like all of us he made some decisions he would have made differently in hindsight but he'sed off from them and done really well." now, the tasks in front of suhr once he officially becomes chief is to trim a top-heavy

administration as well as make 10% cuts in the budget something the mayor has asked all city departments to do. he will be sworn in at city hall. we don't know the time yet but we'll let you know. >> thank you, anne makovec live in san francisco. drastic job cuts in san jose. now, all this because of a budget problem. and pink slips are going out to more than 100 police officers. now, kiet do joins us now from police headquarters with more on how it came to this. >> reporter: of the employees yesterday 600 got layoff notices and of those 600, 106, to be exact, are police officers. now, if all of these police officers are let go, it would be the first time in the city's history that this would be allowed to happen. now, the layoff notices went out yesterday as employees were called in one by one by their magers to tell them thed -- managers to tell them the bad news. they were all sent out with the assumption that all 11 worker unions will take a 10% pay cut. but only four of the unions

have agreed to do so. this year's $115 million historic deficit is now the tenth year in a row of budget cuts fueled in part by increasing pension costs. this has meant longer waits for all city services, everything from fire to applying for permits. the mood around city hall and the unions was disbelief. >> pretty much somewhat confused and shocked in a way. and no matter what happens, as of right now, i will get laid off. and that's just a shock to me. now i have to find other avenues to support my family. >> reporter: if the rest of the workers unions do not give up another 10% in paycuts, then the city manager says another 155 police officers will be laid off and another 300 city employees will be let go. and the city has to make a decision soon. the new budget start on july 1. >> tough times. thank you, kiet do in san jose. a man beaten to death at a

san jose care home. this morning that man's roommate is in custody. police were called to the home on saint andrews place about 7:30 last night. they say the victim, a 24-year- old, got into a fight with his 28-year-old roommate and died of husband injuries. it's not clear though how this dispute started. the care facility is in a single family house. it's listed online as serving the developmentally disabled. an alleged serial killer will be back in court this morning. 77-year-old joseph naso from reno is not expected to enter a plea in court today. he is accused of killing two women in the bay area in 1970s and two others in yuba county in the '90s. he is under investigation for the murder of three children up in state new york in the '70s. all the victims had the same first and last initials. and there is more evidence of bad recordkeeping by pg&e. the "san francisco chronicle" reports the utility mislabeled

34 miles of pipeline as seamless. those inaccurate records came to light in the wake of the san bruno blast. the piece of pipe that exploded in september was also mislabeled as seamless. the utility has argued the record flaws played no role in the disaster. the pipeline will be tested for weld problems this year. today we'll learn more about pg&e's work following the explosion during a town hall meeting. the explosion killed 8 people and destroyed dozens of homes. long-term recovery efforts will be at the top of tonight's agenda. it starts at 6:30 p.m. and it will be held at the san bruno senior center. some breaking news out of washington this morning. president obama is expected to announce that cia director leon panetta will replace defense secretary robert gates. now, this is coming from a source close to the administration. general david petraeus currently in charge of the war in afghanistan would then become chief of the cia. these changes will likely take

"s" curve. quick trip on all the approaches fine. 18 minutes down the eastshore freeway from the carquinez bridge to the maze. golden gate bridge southbound traffic fine into san francisco. remember kcbs, our radio partners, at 740-am and 106.9- fm. >> thank you. it's 5:46. let's take a look at some of the top stories this wednesday. 52-year-old greg suhr is currently captain of the bayview station where he is credited for a 50% drop in homicide. he was chosen as the new police chief. san jose may lay off hundreds of employees including more than 100 police officers. some of the jobs could be spared depending on negotiations with the various unions. they are trying to reduce a

large budget deficit. at&t's plan is on hold. they are going to discuss with neighborhoods on whether or not they want the four-foot boxes on their sidewalks. critics have called for an environmental review on the plan to install the boxes. president obama is calling for action to lower the rising cost of gasoline. he is "asking" oil producing countries to increase output and calling on congress to repeal tax breaks for the oil industry. republicans say his suggestions would raise taxes and increase the price at the pump. muni issued a new set of rules to prevent accidents such as open doors on trains. according to "the examiner," some solutions include modifications to doors, a review of troubleshooting procedures, a standardized cheat sheet for all operators and they are considering adding

six mechanics during peak business hours to help with malfunctions. in the past three weeks, two muni trains have traveled through a tunnel with an open door. late-night service for bart could get another try. service would extend an hour later on friday nights. but to help maintain the system, saturday service would begin at 1 an hour later. if bart directors like the idea, son of the new schedule to begin as soon as september. here's an idea i think you're going to like. shorter wait times at the dmv. who wouldn't like that? right now average wait times are about one or two hours at some busy offices but now the dmv is rolling out self-service vehicle registration terminals in southern california. it only takes three or four minutes to renew your registration. >> it would take cash, debit cards, credit cards and personal checks.

hands now. the playstation network was shut down last week when an on screen error message showed up. there is a chance that credit card numbers for as many as 77 million customers might have been compromised. >> sony has had this outage on their network and it's been ongoing for days. they hadn't said anything or much about it. so for them to all of a sudden announce about 6 days into the outage that a ton of personal data was compromised plus maybe credit card numbers has people more than a little bit upset right now. >> sony says it put out the warnings as soon as it learned the extent of that data loss. all right. hanging out with friends helps your brain stay healthy. >> i always said that. that's according to a new study on the health benefits of social butterflies. researchers look at 1100 adults. they compared socially active adults to people who were less social and they found those who visited friends, attend the parties, even went to church had less decline in thinking
