time now 5:00 a.m. president obama says justice has been done. >> making a big announcement last night let's go to washington and joel brown. >> reporter: deliver the news that americans have waited a decade to hear, justice for 9/11 osama bin laden is dead. for many, this was reason to celebrate. [ audio difficulty ] it felt like a victory party, hundreds cheering and chanting outside the white house after getting the news osama bin laden was dead. in a late night address the president said the american military killed the al qaeda leader during a raid in pakistan. >> the death of osama bin laden marks the most significant achievement to date in our nations effort to defeat al qaeda. >> the cia started getting leads on osama bin laden in august and late last week pinpointed his location, a secure compound, in an affluent

counter terrorism officials. in fact, it is something the counter terrorism office here in washington spent the night working on. >> and how about the arab world? a lot of them are in revolt right now what is their reaction over there? >> well, i tell you what, it depends on which country you are looking at in fact, pakistan which is our friend our alley over there, they put out a statement supporting the killing and saying it was a victory in the war on terrorism. then of course you hear from hamas and hamas denounced the attacks just depends on who you are and who your friends are. >> joel brown in washington. law enforcement agencies across the nation on heightened alert. sharon chin at the embarcadero bart station with extra security here in san francisco.

good morning. >> reporter: good morning frank. bart police and san francisco police say there was no specific threat but they are on heightened alert none the less. in san francisco, they are holding over officers from the midnight shift so there are double the appointed officers for the morning commute. they are paying extra attention to transit, areas of worship and protest. there is a team of highly visible officers funded by a tsa grant. fbi gave police advance notice to take precautions, many people tell us it is news they have been waiting for, for a long time >> i am a new yorker and actually very happy that it has finally come to a conclusion. there is now peace to know the man who did so much destruction to our country on september 11th there is justice. >> very happy about it, glad to hear it and i hope that it

and possibly to the assassination to the pre her in 2007. this is quite a legacy. there appears some signs of sympathy to osama bin laden and al qaeda, although i have talked to senior high ranking officials and there is also a sense of relief. this is a figure who has been obviously -- this is a mild stone moment end of a legacy osama bin laden finally killed. >> let me ask you, osama bin laden was killed in a suburb of outside the capital were people surprised he was living so close to the capital and right in that area? >> reporter: well, i know the suburb -- the word suburb has been used but the city is 2 hours driving distance

>> well, that is a very valid question although officials from both sides i believe are already working on a way to make certain, that this relationship does not slip out of control. that is what i have been told by fairly high ranking pakistani officials but this will raise many questions for the pakistanies, osama bin laden discovered 60, 70 miles from the capital city of islam ma bad will raise many questions, how did he get to this place, how long was he there in this very well fortified compound and exactly what were the circumstances in which the u.s. discovered his where abouts, his presence at this place, and whether the u.s. tracked him down on its own without any assistance from pakistan those are questions that are likely to be asked in the coming hours and in deed the coming days. in islam ma bad with cbs thank you for taking the time to join us today.

on ked planes... welcome back. some victims of the terror attacks were from here in the bay area. >> flight 93 was on its way from newark new jersey to san francisco. kit doe joins us from union city where there is a memorial to victims from that flight. good morning. >> reporter: good morning candles have been lit and flowers laid here overnight at this memorial along with the 40 stone markers that represent the people on the plane, united flight 93 on that fateful day. it was headed from sfo headed to sfo but high jacked and started heading to washington dc presumably toward the capital building or white house but the men and women stopped the high jackers from doing

that and crashed the plane in the woods in pennsylvania. yesterday we spoke with the husband of lauren who was on the plane and 3 months pregnant at the time we asked if he felt justice had been done. >> to some degree. obviously, they took care of the man who ultimately decided that innocent people should die, i know a lot of people says the symbolic because he was mitigated to what he could do, in the last 10 years, but i know it is also a symbol of hope, that you know, this hate red that caused all this, will diminish. >> reporter: lauren was able to leave a message for jack on the phone he was sleeping when the call came in. she said that there was a problem on the plane she wanted everyone to know she was fine for now and that how much she loved everyone. coming up, at the bottom of the hour we will hear again from

2005, and some candles have been lit and flowers laid overnight there are 40 stone markers that represent the people on united flight 93, on that fateful day it was headed from new jersey to sfo, in bound and was hijacked started heading toward washington dc presumably the capital building or white house but the men and women onboard crashed the plane in the woods in pennsylvania. we spoke with the husband of lauren on the plane she was 3 months pregnant at the time we asked him if he thought osama bin laden would ever be caught. >> i am not an advocate for violence, but i do want to thank those who were vigilant on behalf of lauren and our unborn child and all those lost that day and everyone who has been lost to a terrorist act. it is not just ours it is global, we need to stop it. >> and many people on the plane
